I really like the video. That's Mike Rutherford, the guitarist and bandleader who's the one mourning the loss of his father. The boy playing his son is his real-life son. At that moment when they're standing before the grave when the son turns and walks away -- that wasn't scripted. The boy just decided he was done standing there. I think it's to the director's credit that he went with it and shot around it because it's actually such a great moment. Incidentally, Mike Rutherford (as someone else here has already mentioned) was a founding member of Genesis (bass, guitars). Along with Tony Banks, he's the only one of two members who were in that band from beginning to end. (Even Phil Collins was not a member from the beginning. The other guys hired him late in 1970 just before they recorded their third album.)
I like to think that in the years since it was released this song may have saved a lot of people a world of regret. At least I hope it did. Great song, sung by one of best singers ever (still around and still singing) - the fantastic Paul Carrack.
Andre, music can move you, words touch you - pull at the heart-strings, it's being human and alive, in the living years... I had had a fallout with my dad, but we had a very important, loving conversation on the night of 12th February 1985...he died the next morning, and I'm so glad I told him I loved him the evening before... 40 years ago but this song always gets to me... 😘😘😘
One of the best songs of the 80s, for sure! Very sad. My parents both died in about a week from each other. I sure wish I had done and said more, coz I knew in advance they were both going.

I get goosebumps every time when he sings I wasn't there that morning when my father passed away. Fantastic song with a great message.
A lot of grief went into this beautiful song.
One of my favorite songs of all time. "You can listen as well as you hear. "
