After chasing down a bunch of issues on my truck, we found this video and you had done everything we had up until this point and my wiring harness is absolutely trashed. Thank you for the insight!
Just spent the $230 on new batteries and still had the issue UNTIL watching this video- went straight to this area and sure enough, have a wire that was rubbed thru- held a jumper in place and had my son try it and sure enough- she cranks and starts. You just save me I don't know how much time and cost having someone troubleshoot this issue- THANKS for a great post!!!!
This is exactly why I created this post, I love hearing these stories. I couldn’t find anything on here directly solving these wiring issues and they aren’t always in the same place but mine was in a very common area so I had to share it. I’m glad to hear you fixed your truck and if you only replaced your batteries you got off cheap great job. 👍
Thanks for the vid. Had a no start today and after getting it home found the harness chaffed against upper control arm mount. You saved me hours of troubleshooting. 2011 LML
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I almost reflashed my truck and replaced a tuner!!!!! Didn't find frayed wiring harness but just moving them around and it cranked up 🙏 My lady drives my truck to work and I take my work truck. You just saved her job 👍👌
Found open wire that comes from starter to key switch, isolated it, replace relay and now it is working perfectly fine. Chevy 3500 diesel. Thank for the tip
Genius! After checking the starter, solenoid, and batteries we took the wheel well off from the outside and immediately saw a ground wire that had been rubbed and broken. Patched the wire and she started right up. THANK YOU!
2002 Duramax with the same problem. The other day I cycled the key and it started right up the second time. Today I did not re-start at the drive through. I will start here. I have found a number of problems with wires in the wiring harness since I have owned the truck. Thank you for taking the time to make and share the video.
Lots of people on the diesel websites that have a similar problem, but they have no idea where to start or how to determine what is wrong. Thanks for posting your problem and solution.
No problem, it’s definitely a real issue with these trucks that can cost someone a lot of money if they have to bring their truck to a dealership or mechanic I hope it can help someone.
So my truck is doing the same thing no crank no start 05 lly can you please tell me how you fixed it? Spliced wires? Did you use new electric connectors? I need my truck for work and am desperate for your input. Thanks
Sorry I didn’t see your comment sooner all I can say is check your under hood wiring harnesses especially where I showed you in the video and repair any warn or broken wires use the same gauge wire to replace old wires and use weather proof connectors. Check under the under hood fuse box I also found where mice chewed wires under there good luck and have patience you will find the problem.
Brilliant! I have the no crank intermittent problem on '07 LBZ. Luckily I can reach the starter to cross start it at the solenoid. I will check the wires ASAP!
Outstanding! Ty this fixed lmm. Gauges where shutting off & on locks going crazy, abs & brake light coming on & off, no start, shift Pendle disappearing randomly, limp mode. Looked Like a 8,000lb Christmas tree. I appreciate it!
@hernestochavez972 it was about 8-10” out of the computer where the wire loom rests against the plastic wheel well liner, the wire loom around the main wiring harness rubbed through and rubbed through most of the wires coming out of the computer. I wouldn’t have noticed it without removing the plastic wheel well liner on the drivers side, as soon as I took it out I saw the damaged wiring harness. Hopefully this helps.
Ordered an NSBU switch tonight after being stranded on night shift in 20 degree weather. P0700 code, ABS, and Service 4WD light on. Thanks for the heads up brother and I'm checking that loom on my day off Friday. Hopefully I can narrow it down. 🤘
This was my issue except the harness was laying against the upper control arm mount and it had rubbed through. Fixed the wire and zip tied it up away from the mount and it’s fixed. Thanks!
Thank you sir for the video and the detailed pics. My dad is a travel salesman sailing farming equipment and been having issues with his 2006 duramax. I’ve done construction my hole life and I am not a mechanic but not much I can’t do and with this hopefully I can get it done for him…
Atomic speed garage, let me just say thank you so much for your video. I had a similar problem. I did change the starter. Still no start. So i did what tou said. Mine wasn't the harness. There is the purple wire off the starter that goes to the fuse box. The loom was runs around a power steering system and comes up through the hard line and was shorting out. I so greatly appreciate your time and effort to help others. Im telling all my friends to subscribe to your channel. Thanks again. Duramax for life
T Dooner I just replaced my starter and am having the same problem, I’m gonna check this purple wire you speak of, I hate to put it in the shop and it wind up being something simple at this point. Thanks for the tip.
Not 6" from where yours was, I found my short! Thank you!! (A few wires running right behind PS pump an down) metal end of power steering line rubbed clean through on I believe the starter wire. When truck bounces the wire moves... if on rubber line it acted fine, on metal it shorted out.
Man o man i hope to GOD that's the first thing I see when i take off my wheel well cover tomorrow 😭 🤞 got it at auction 2 weeks ago and it's dead in the water
Thanks for the help. Found one wire harness had 4 wires chewed on by a mouse. Then found 1 on another harnesses. Fixed all of them but still no start. Kept looking and found ground wire on computer broken.
I subscribed to your channel because you expose the nightmare of wiring deficiencies in vehicles. I happen to be aware of it when I had to fix the harness on my Dodge RAM that was wrapped around the back frame and was all eaten up, invisible too. ...and now I face the same issue on my DURAMAX, except ZERO ROOM to access ANYTHING except the gas cap!

That's ,, exactly my problem,, I have no power on the switch wire from the module to the start relay,, I just thought I'd check the internet before really tearing into the truck.. Thank you very much for your video 😎😎
Hey having a similar issue on an 09 LMM. Did yours try to crank for a bit and then gauges fall on their face and all the electrical turns itself back on?
I recently replaced brake booster and power steering line, so I had the piece in the fender well out. My truck started doing the same thing a few days later. This will give me a good start. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for posting - I will have to check that out on my truck. I am having the exact same issue. I have fully power on all my systems, go to start and it just keeps clicking. Will post again when I look into this issue. Thanks!
All right Senor, I have a 2008 Duramax and I have full power from the batteries but the truck won’t start . Let’s see if this is the issue or if it’s the starter .
Yup sure enough, dash quit on route to town, shut truck off at Tim Horton's drive through and it wouldn't crank, tried crossing it over no start, checked fuses and relays , watched your video while waiting for Buddy to show up with a trailer, got him to try key while I wiggled wires and she flashed right up, thanks
I really hope that this is it.. Because, I have the same problem, Dash lights come on, replaced the starter, was going to replace the starter fuze, but, watched another video, and was able to check my fuze and starter, which both worked just fine. And it even cranked our, but, still wouldn’t start. Usually I would turn the key off and on for about a hour or two and all the sudden my truck would start. I will get out there and try to push my truck under the carport, because it’s supposed to rain tomorrow. I really don’t want to get wet doing this all day in the rain.
No problem hope it helps someone out there, the harness rub through is a real problem for these trucks but unfortunately it’s not always in the exact same spot good luck.
So I just put both new batteries and new alternator and it only starts when jumped and when I shut it off it won’t start back up unless jumped wondering if it’s the same thing or is something different
No problem that’s exactly why I put it out there, that is a very common area for it to rub through and I couldn’t find anything on UA-cam to help me. Even if yours isn’t in the same place it gives you a direction to start checking the whole harness. I hope it helps.
Was the starter solenoid clicking but just not starting? I have one full electric voltage just no crank I’m getting the starter relay click just no cranking
No the starter solenoid was not clicking, I had full gauges and voltage but no crank no ignition noise at all. But luckily I found the rubbed thru wires.
Hey Ik it’s a while after you posted the video but I have a 2004 lb7 duramax and it was cold out and the trucks been sitting for almost a month and I had the charger on it and I was trying to get it started but the batteries where just weak so it wasn’t cranking for very fast or very long but everything else was working as it should. But then I let it charge and went to crank and there was no glow plugs or crank even though it was just working a minute ago. Do you think this is the same issue as urs or is it something else. Thanks
Dude man thanx, I just went after this vid and looked, and one wire was mangled threw, 3 bad all together,so I’m assuming most of these trucks have the same thing happening without anybody noticing
Thanks for the video. I have to drop the liner to make sure this is the same issue. I got it jump started but my gages are dead, windows and locks don't work and cabin lights stayed on. Any of these things happen to you with this issue?
Hey, I need some help. I have 06 duramax, it cranks without a problem, but it doesn't start. Though, while turning the key to see if it starts, again, it cranks. But, it makes this ticking sound as if the battery is straight dead. So, I'm just wondering how do I got about fixing that problem without being charged so much.
Just scrolling through the comments and seeing people with 2004-2017???? Come on Chevy, get it together! How can this exact same problem go on year, after year, after year? How about a RECALL???
I see the two chafed wires. But what did they chafe against? I don't see any metal that they could have gotten near to be able to short to ground. Chafing against the plastic inner liner wouldn't work. Did the two wires chafe together and short across themselves? I hope you can answer this question today as I have a one day opportunity to buy a 3500 with this problem Thanks.
Hey i think this is what im dealing with currently. Not wait to start coil light sometimes then it will fire up but has power lost at the pedal. I can shut it off and restart and gain the full throttle power back.
My only advice is to look over every inch of wiring harness under the hood looking for any rub through, these trucks are notorious for this happening in many different locations.
My 06 LBZ has the no crank no start full power problem when it gets around freezing temps. I’m thinking mine is a bad alternator but I’ll give the harness a look
Was it your harness I have the same problem when it gets cold will not start wait till it warms up then will start all day next day wait for sun lol driving me crazy
@@richardkelly8882 nope. I replaced the alternator but turns out it was bad batteries. Lol 😂. Cold cranking amps was low. I believe around 400 out of 1000. Started fine in warmer weather. Only had issues when starting around temps in the 40s. New batteries installed and starts like a champ again. Batteries I replaced were only 2 years old so not sure why batteries didn’t last tho
I own a 2003 Chevy Kodiak c4500. Replaced both batteries, replaced alternator, and going to replace my starter. Still having issues. Hopefully this is the problem. Been trying to figure this out for so long. Im annoyed lol
My 3500 is throwing a P2510 code, and the batteries were replaced 3 months ago and I came out and had limited dash lights, locks wouldn't work then it just completely died. We were able to jump start it, then it had a draw on it and died again. All I can find is that it may be a ground or a module to replace. So question did your truck have any codes to indicate your problem?
I have new batteries new injectors new pump truck started fine the truck sat for a week and won’t start the prime is ok do you think could be my wires like yours I don’t see any rubbing on the harness like yours ??? Could it be Tcm ??? Thx any suggestions thx all
If it cranks it’s probably not the wires, but these trucks are known to chafe the wires all over the engine compartment so look at your whole under hood harness, could be a fried TCM if you have ever jump started another vehicle.
Question I think I got the same issue. But I got the 6.5 Detroit diesel. Full power new batteries click for starter. Truck will start when it wants. Does any of your trucks do this?? Ps all connections are nice tight and clean
Well that’s a completely different animal but it’s still a GM so I guess it could be wire harness rub through, just have someone try to crank it while you wiggle the harness around in all different places and just look for corrosion or physical damage on any of the harness under the hood. Good Luck
im getting no start no crank intermittently. truck shutting off going down the highway and coming back on saying "Service traction control". I replaced TCM still same problem. I repalced batteries still same problem. For instance today i go to remote start the truck and nothing, try the key and nothing. I take battery cables off, replace and still no start. i drive another truck to work come home and remote start the truck and it turns on.
Did you drop the driver side front plastic wheel well liner and look at the wiring harness coming out of the ECM ? That’s where I had the same problems you’re having.
o! by the way... there is zero room to inspect/work on the DURAMAX in a van type front. Do they drop the drive train to work on it? It is very hard to even access the distribution boxes(fuses). You need a phckng slim-jim camera to see much of it(under-hood) and the other one is under the seat... CRIMINAL!
Mine happned the same think wont start. But before it shutdown on the dash the oil red light came up and said that had low pressure to turn off engine. After that wont start.. anything helps..
After chasing down a bunch of issues on my truck, we found this video and you had done everything we had up until this point and my wiring harness is absolutely trashed. Thank you for the insight!

MY 2008 WAS RUNNING I CUT ENGINE OFF THEN TRIED RO START IT WITH NO WARNING IT WOULD NOT CRANK, I WILL CHECK WIRING, THANKS
No codes at all on my truck.
Good Luck
So how did you fix it??? But a whole new harness, splice in new wires????
I spliced the wires where I found damaged wires right out of the computer and it fixed my problem. You’re going to have to check the whole harness.
I'm curious as to how many miles were on the truck when this problem was experienced.
240,000
im getting no start no crank intermittently. truck shutting off going down the highway and coming back on saying "Service traction control".
@@atomicspeedgarage I did but didn’t see any corrosion. I read that the tcm and ecm share a common ground. Ill look there next
Where could i find this on a 2016 DURMAX
I’m not sure I owned an 04
o! by the way... there is zero room to inspect/work on the DURAMAX in a van type front.
Do they drop the drive train to work on it? It is very hard to even access the distribution boxes(fuses). You need a phckng slim-jim camera to see much of it(under-hood) and the other one is under the seat... CRIMINAL!
Dammit. I’m 8 hours away from home after thanksgiving and have to find a way to fix this so I can get me and my parents home 😂
Just look over all of the wiring harness under hood it’s a very common problem on the Duramax. Good luck!!
@@atomicspeedgarage Thank You very much! I will have to do that. Gonna head out in just a minute to check it out.
Is This for Only Diesel Trucks, or Most of GMs`??.....Many Gas Trucks Have Similar Problems!!.........Excellent Observation!!!
All 2000’s GM trucks have this problem
@@atomicspeedgarage Thanks for the Reply!!....I Have a 2001 GMC 1500 Pick up and No connection from Neutral Switch??.....I Will Look!!
How do you fix that tho, do you just replaced the damaged wire and tape it up?
Yes that’s exactly what I did
What wire was it
Did the lights on the dash ever flash on a off alot?
Yes they did it was worse when it would rain.
I’m having the same problem, but the wires are good, batteries good I’ll say is probably the starter. I just had this issue on 7/11/24
How do you repair it?
Ditto
did you get a p0601 code because I am having the same problem but i am throwing that code just wondering if you got that code too or not
Mine didn’t throw any codes, but p0601 code could definitely be a broken wire problem.
was your engine light on
No CEL
Mine happned the same think wont start. But before it shutdown on the dash the oil red light came up and said that had low pressure to turn off engine. After that wont start.. anything helps..
How do you fix it if it's like this??? Do you need a whole new harness?
No you just repair the area that’s rubbed through by splicing in new wire.
Very helpful thx for sharing
Did you have any fuses burn out?
No just broken wires
