KTM390 Adventure, Low End Torque (Torque,Traction and MTC)

- A lot of riders have complained about issue of low end torque on KTM390 Adventure. Some even suggested change of front sprocket. This video shows exactly what is the main issue about torque, traction and MTC.
How to Switch OFF MTC : please watch the following video
• How to Switch OFF - Mo...
This video provides a simple guideline on How to Switch OFF, Motorcycle Traction Control system or MTC on KTM390 Adventure.
KTM390 Adventure, in Motorcycle Traction Control off mode performs very well when going off-road. However, every time we start the motorcycle this exercise has to be carried out which is a bit confusing for a new owner.
There is no doubt that KTM believes in riders safety so they have designed this system like that and MTC always remains ON.

Finally someone giving correct perspective about 390 adv
Great video, thanks for do it in english and speak clear, hugs from Chile!
I am happy to connect with you 🤝 Thank you very much.
I changed the sprocket of my 390 Duke to 14 teeth from the stock 15 teeth and have been enjoying the ride since. Now I use the motorcycle more often. Earlier I had to change the gears every other second and keep the engine on the boil which was very tiring. Now with 14 teeth all I have to do is just give it a twist of the throttle the bike gains momentum without changing gears. Maybe for those who travel on expressways the stock sprocket might be good for chock a block traffic switching to 14 teeth is bliss.
Any warranty issues cropping up due to change in sprocket size...??
Presently among the Indian UA-camrs, I think you are the only one with good experience and know the right information.
Worth watching your videos.
He is a professional rally racer representing India and Airforce 😊
This video deserves 1million likes.
I've heard a lot about this topic, and yours is the first video to directly address it. Great job thanks for the video.
Excellent genuine update sir. I am going to book this bike soon. Thanks for clearing the doubts. Jai HIND.
There are many UA-camrs calling themselves expert bikers and complaining about 390 adventure low end tourqe unnecessarily..
Hats off to you sir!
You took ao much effort to make this video, putting your bike in actual conditions is highly acceptable!
You helped me to finalise my next bike, yes KTM Adv 390 it is!!! 😊👍👍👍
One of the best reviewers - short, crisp and extremely knowledgeable. Thank you sir. Jai hind 🇮🇳
Thanks so much sir! I was about to drop my idea to buy ktm 390, but now you cleared a huge confusion clouded over on whole youtube, .....it would be real pleasure to see a comparison between bmw g310gs and ktm 390 adv, with ur detail anlaysis .thankyou for such a video

Great! Finally, I see the bike going thru some serious mud. Seems to cope with it quite well with those tires.
Spot on. When riding in tough off-road conditions like Slush/Mud and Sand, your tyre is more important than low end torque. What's the point of all that torque if the tyre is not able to grip the surface at all. All idiots riding road tyres on off-road surfaces and complaining about torque being not enough when their tyre is just free rolling.
Thank u sir for clearing tje doubts...
I hv an adv 390...
Great explanation. Thank you! I'm very excited as I'm going to buy a 390 Adventure tomorrow. :)
Congratulations 💐 and Ride Safe
That was very helpful sir. Very valuable information about 390 ADV. Thank you very much.
I just recently bought one, and this video, and your video on how to switch off MTC have already proven invaluable. Greetings from Scotland, and thank you.
I feel extremely sorry for same. Can you slightly elaborate why this?
@@WingstoWheels I am unsure if you have misunderstood. Your videos have been very helpful. I had issues with trying to turn off the MTC, and your video made it clear and easy. As for the torque, I was slightly considering changing the sprockets, but I now realise that the tyres (tires) are more at fault than anything else. The bike has very worn Continental TKC 70 tyres on it, I bought it with 4000 miles on it , so the tyres are well past their best.
Thank you for the excellent videos.
@@Hutchie2112 oh, so sorry friend. My mistake. Thank you so much. Have a Good day and Happy Riding!
@@WingstoWheels It's all good. Enjoy every ride!
Wonderful review sir , glad to meet you. You are a gem of a person !!!
Good tip, I have one on order due in October. I have seen a review that had this problem exactly. Uphill in loose gravel etc.
I have just come back after riding KTM390 Adventure on very difficult trails. I found nil issues with the Torque. A short video is here .... ua-cam.com/video/W5pe4bd3TM4/v-deo.html
Bob Thomas has it arrived? What’s your thoughts?
Well done Sir, your a good teacher. Have a pleasant day from NH " Live Free or Die"
Brilliant analysis sir, subbed
🙏🙏 You are right thort this adventure bike...👍👍👍👍
After watching your videos i tested the bike as i needed to upgrade for 200-350km weekend rides and 1000+km monthly rides .but i felt for a person living in a crowded city and has the option of one bike this bike will be a pain to ride in traffic..i was not happy with how rough it is at low speed it actually felt like a huge downgrade from my 150 honda unicorn dazzler for city.
When riding in a crowded city or even highways best is to use MTC as we are not racing and also power delivery is quite smooth. However when you are attempting tricky sections best is to switch off MTC. KTM engines are known for brute power so probably that engine noise at high rpm is giving you that feeling of roughness which otherwise is enjoyed by any offroad rider.
Thank you for your honest review
Okkkkkk....v nice , highly informative....
In case of 390 adv X ...i dont think there is traction control..
So , it should do better with low end torque....or vice versa ?? Kindly offer views on this....anyone ...
I was plannto buy 390 adv X but now skeptical coz my driving would mostly be in kolkata city traffic....
really useful..1st found only in this video.
And the LEGEND is born :)
Interesting , thank you for this. Just watched a UA-cam video from a gentleman in Australia who put a 47-tooth rear sprocket on his 390 KTM Adventure, and it seemed to help with this issue quite a bit--he said it made a lot of difference in gears 1-4.
Any change in sprockets will certainly bring results however for a routine adventure touring one may not need. However if want something specific like good amount of torque in lower gears at a cost of top end performance, yes it can be done based on individual requirements. Thanks for the valuable inputs. May be you can share the link.
Yes but when your talking about an all digital bike like this your gonna have so many issues when you start changing things like that and truly almost zero actual improvement other than whats in your head.
We'll said . nothing beats KTM 390 engine .been around for 30 years. Power to weight ratio of Adventure light off road trails.!
Awesome analysis sir..clears the air..
Nice video sir was really waiting 4 tis video 👍👍👍👍
Super explanation sir 👍
Jai Hind Sir
I found very satisfied ans from your end related to low end torque... Sir i am planning to buy this... Pls suggest me
Just go ahead and buy. The cast wheel version, not spoke wheels, unless planning serious offloading.
@@WingstoWheels Thank u sir...
Yes Commander got your point on switching off MTC while off roading but what about the bike stalling in city traffic? In congested sections you have to keep deploying the clutch.
Any sports engine which has higher rpm, or shorter stroke, will stall at lower rpm if not kept running by light clutch engagement. That's why a machine like the RE HIMALAYAN or Bullet with longer stroke keeps going, even when at lowest rpm without any fear of stalling. This happens with my Ducati Hypermotard too which is powered by a 116 Bhp engine. So use a light touch of clutch and things will be fine.
@@WingstoWheels Thanks for the reply, I hope it doesn’t wear out the clutch faster...
@@samirsingh64 clutch is meant for that purpose only and even a finger touch is good enough.
@@WingstoWheels Thanks
Awesome review 🎉
Thanks for sharing you experience its was helpful
Great Video, but even in your videos of crossing slush, you are not getting any low end torque. Pretty high in the rev range.
Sir mtc will only set in when ur rev is very high
Then how switching off it will improve ur lower end torque
Hello Sir! What about the Height issue of this bike? How tall are you? How are you Enjoying This Bike?
Thanks !
hi sir, I'll be appearing for CDS 2022 ...I'm having myopia, my right eye is -0.5 and right eye is -0.75 will I be eligible for flying branch? please reply sir
Thanks for this video Sir!
Rightly stuffed with knowledge
Well described sir.... thnx for d knowledge
Thank you sir for this information
Sirf i wish to be just like you sir❤
I too am joining the airforce very soon after my ent exams
Good that you draw inspiration from small work. Best wishes and do well.
Could you share where you got the orange headlight surround? Thank you
Just buy that sticker paper used for automotive graphics, cut and paste. It's a simple task. First trace the lines on a white paper by placing it directly over the motorcycle.
Same problem in duke 390 as well there is no traction control in duke 390🙄 then we have only choice of 14tooth
There is no problem if your fingers and legs are working fine on clutch .... and gearing.
Well explained...
Lack of knowledge...
Happen to change front sprocket understanding your machine is very important

Sir ,
I am 5feet 7 inches please tell me that i can buy this or not ? Or it will lead to a problem
You can ride this machine as it is a light weight machine. However before you buy, test ride the bike while keeping these inputs in mind ..... ua-cam.com/video/xmqOc9EIB-A/v-deo.html
Thank you sir .
Mr Ravi from KTM Guragon told about you .
I have gone through test drive.. it was ok .
Is static my both legs were on toe tips
But can i handle slight off roading ..that is what exactly i was asking .
@@explore726 you have to use same technique but all depends on your practice and comfort level
@@WingstoWheels Thanks a lot sir.
Too good sir ji 👍🙏
Hi sir what about Duke 390
Latest Duke390 should be having everything including MTC.
Good one
I thought it was the opposite? Isn't MTC supposed to provide more power to the rear wheel to get out of situations?
MTC is a Rider Safety system and when you wish to command throttle without any inputs from the MTC, we switch OFF same. MTC will cut power when wheels are low on traction.
How well do these Scorpio tyres perform on road ?? Can it handle high speed cornering and braking ?

This video gives all the details on Pirelli Scorpion Rally and STR both. Front and rear tyres as used in above KTM390 adventure.
@@WingstoWheels Thank you sir. Like always ... Good content

You are contradicting your own statement.
In one video you said one shouldn't twitch off traction control.
And here you're saying if someone want low end Torque then the traction control should be switched off...
If you are a novice and not going on extreme downslope, don't switch off ABS.
If you are an expert and want power delivery as per your choice, switch off ABS.
Please demonstrate the adequate torque by stopping on a steep incline and then restarting the climb without a struggle. The lack of low end torque below 5000 rpm is the only reason I have not bought this bike, even though I have been waiting for it to become available for a long, long, looong time.
ua-cam.com/video/3N8IOIWVvMc/v-deo.html
Video time 15:30 onwards, you can see many such inclines.
Which steep inclines are you talking about? Most motorcycles, including the 150cc ones generate sufficient torque to climb inclines up to 20% without any issue. Even your 110cc scooter can do that. I own a Duke 390 and I have no issues climbing up any incline as long as I am in 1st gear. Even on parking ramps, I can climb up at idling RPM without giving any throttle at all. Do not believe the reviews provided by the half wit idiots on UA-cam. Most of them don't even understand what true off-roading is. Riding on a flat grass trail 10min away from the main highway is not off-roading.
The 390 engine does not make much power until 5000 rpm and then power comes on in a rush. Not exactly ideal when you're trying to crawl up a gravelly slope where the incline is steep enough to cause you to slide backwards and the wheels spin because of too much power/rpm.
@@airfoil Well that's exactly what I am trying to say. The engine has enough torque even at idle RPM to climb up, even on a gravel slope. I have used that bike on all sorts of terrain and have never struggled because of the engine. People over exaggerate the low end torque issue of the Duke. I have ridden on slopes off road with a pillion and have never had problems
@@aaassaeer The problem is most Indians won't be able to or won't feel safe to go high speeds. If at low rev the 390 engine performs just like a normal bike, many people find it useless to buy such an expensive bike because they won't want to go beyond the 80-100km/h mark. Most Indians would look to have more low end torque (than high end power) to get through tricky traffic and go for weekend rides to the hills.
What mods have you done?
I have not done any modifications except change of tyres and hand guards. For more information, you can see videos on my channel.
I almost dropped the plan to buy adventure 390 after all those idiot riders in UA-cam. then I found this.
low end torque
