KTM 390 Adventure Gets Front Sprocket From Duke 250: Low End Issue Fixed

  • In the last video on my KTM 390 Adventure or KTM 390 ADV, if you prefer calling it that, I told you about a quick fix for the terrible low end - just swap out the front 15 tooth sprocket for a 14 tooth sprocket from the KTM Duke 250.
Not only does this mod cost almost nothing - Rs 250 for the sprocket - it improves the low speed rideability of the bike immensely.
Even if I take my hand off the throttle in the first gear, the bike keeps chugging along at 9 kmph, without stalling.
The bike also crosses speed breakers with ease in the second gear at low speeds now.
So, city rideability has definitely improved.
What has taken a bit of a hit is the highway fuel economy. Because now this engine is spinning faster to maintain the same speeds as the stock bike, I noticed a 10 per cent drop in the highway mileage.
I rode some 220 km yesterday - a very fast highway ride where we were averaging some 120-130 kmph for the most part, with occasional bursts upto 160 kmph, the motorcycle returned 27 kmpl. Which again is not bad at all. The stock bike I believe would have returned close to 29-30 kmpl at those speeds.
I am sure due to the shorter gearing, the city fuel economy will go up a bit though.
And for those who think we will lose out on a lot of top end, the bike still managed to hit 166 kmph without much of an effort. That's plenty for a person like me, at least.
My idea of the gearing on this bike is, if it can do 140 kmph all day and has another 20 kmph to overtake on the highway, I am okay with that.
I'll chose better city ability over outright top speed any day of the week.
What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments below.
And if you would like regular updates on this bike along with other bikes that I ride and customise, you can take a look at my Instagram channel here: / abhinavbhatt19
As always, thank you for giving me your time. I hope you have a nice day.

Great video!👍🏽There is another way to solve this issue which I did on my Duke 390 2015 model. Changed the rear sprocket to that of Duke 250. This increased the top end a bit but reduced the torque. Stock A/F ratio on this is insufficient to produce enough torque to drive a larger rear sprocket at low RPMs. This issue can be solved in two ways, increase torque by reducing front sprocket size or decrease torque by reducing rear sprocket size. Both work well. First one, what you have done here I felt gives a more aggressive change and is good for offroading. The second one seemed better for highway rides as it smoothened the torque curve throughout the rev range..

  • @jassipokerface
    @jassipokerface 3 роки тому

Hey Abhinav , before the 1000 kms are crossed was there any rev limiter that stops the engine from revving harder and letting the bike go on a top speed. I did apx 120 kms yesterday from delhi to karnal and felt that the bike was being pushed back and not revving freely.
Is it supposed to not freely rev to 10000 rpm even if the shift light settings are not enabled before crossing 1000 kms. I felt like it was only smooth till 80 to 90 kmph and not so smooth beyond that point.

I wonder how this low end problem suddenly came up now ? I mean, this engine was always there with us in the form of 390 duke and KTM says it's not been changed at all for the 390 adventure. And if this problem has surfaced due to making the engine BS6 compliant, then does 2020 BS6 390 Duke also has the same low end issue ?

  • @mookyzook

Didn't this effect the ABS and electronics? One of the reasons I want to change from the Kawasaki X300 is that KTM is lower revving and doesn't scream when accelerating, I must admit I didn't notice the problem with the revs at low speed on my demo ride. I have always had large capacity bikes up until the Kawasaki and I don't miss the power and speed, just hate the high revs.

@abhinav bhatt: with lower tooth sprocketing I believe you are looking at comparatively shorter drive chain life and a slight sacrifice of the top end. But regardless, I suppose for daily riding and sedate cruising going one tooth down makes sense. Also Rolon chain alone only costs about 800-900 in the aftermarket scene so shouldn't cost you a moon when the time comes to replace it.
