I love Pete's facial expressions while Martin is making his choices!
Yeah, I bought one of his Heavy Metal guides back in the 90's. Found some hidden gems but when he's wrong he's VERY wrong.
An album "sounds like Joey Kramer's mutton chops" is funniest and best description I've heard in years!!! Thanks Martin for that one! That will make me laugh all weekend!
Beat me to it

Yeah me too 😂
Any old fans of "WKRP In Cincinnati" might remember in the very first episode that when they changed the radio station over from easy listening to rock "n roll, DJ Dr. Johnny Fever threw the Lawrence Welk-type record that was playing across the room and put Ted Nugent "Queen of The Forrest" on the turntable and blasted it out over the airwaves - I became a instant fan of the show
Great show. Supposedly the reason you never see it on TV in reruns now is the music - they don't have the rights to it. There was one KRP mini-marathon on one of our cable stations last year & I noticed that the original songs had been replaced/cut out. The episodes weren't the same without the music...Oh the humanity!
As god as my witness I thought turkeys could fly. 😂🦃
and unfurled the Kiss poster
@@wolf1977not available on UA-cam ?
@@shizuokaBLUES Don't know, I don't watch tv on my pc. Actually that wouldn't surprise me because due to the nature of the internet it's much easier to get around laws/regs regarding things like copyrights - you just need someone who owns copies of the original episodes to post 'em online...Someone told me that the show might be available on Apple TV+ (which we just recently got) but I haven't checked...
“This album sounds like Joey Kramer’s mutton chops” -classic Martin Poppoff! 😂
No kidding!
@@williamwalker146 I honestly don't think Martin has any idea how funny he is, which makes him all the more entertaining!
@@TheBerndude Oh, he rarely does! It's hysterical!
The look on your face when Martin talked about Secret Treaties made me spit out my coffee....
I have no regard for Martin Popoff.
how about a Canadian 70s edition: April Wine, Max Webster, Rush, and Triumph?
I don't like Max Webster - I'd sub in a Harem Scarem, or maybe the BTO/Bachman 'family' (BTO/Brave Belt/Ironhorse/Union/Bachman solo)
@@wolf1977BTO would make sense if they were doing 70s. I do like Harem Scarem though.
Or 70's and 80's since Triumph only has three albums in that decade. Something like 75-85.
They never talk about April Wine.
Ooh , I'd be all in for Triumph , B.T.O and April Wine
"Secret Treaties" has been my favorite for years but I do agree it's not really a heavy record but damn ! The songs & the mood is so good start to finish.
It's close enough to be imbibing now for the weekend, so introducing the Martin "not Headmaster Birch" Popoff drinking game!
Easy rules:
Single word score: drink once everytime Martin says "production".
Double word score: drink twice if Martin says "mid-rangey".
Triple word score: drink three times if Martin says "contrarian".
Enjoy your weekend everyone! 🇨🇦 🍺🥃😉
Right!
'Anyways' is always a banker for Martin too!
😂drink for every cover Martin shows that's NOT signed .. his collection is incredible
Great new game Jimmy! I approve!
Get completely sozzled when Martin says right 🤣🤣🤣
Ranking the 70s albums of King Crimson, Yes, ELP, Genesis, Jethro Tull & Pink Floyd? An epic prog episode edition!
What Martin dislikes about the first three BOC albums is exactly what I like about them, the mysterious, murky, moody sound and production. It's like music from a whole different universe, the universe pictured on the first and second album covers. I can't rate these because I don't own Kiss, but these shows are making me think of giving a chance to a few of their albums. That's what I love about SoT, the infectious love for music can make a person re-look at how they think about a certain band/artist.
If you are gonna start on a KISS mission of studio albums I recommend. 1. Hotter than Hell 2. Ace Frehley 3. KISS. Otherwise just start with the two live albums. Personally I dig the studio albums for their moods. I love Dynasty alot too but that's a contrarian pick. It's great. I'm shocked they didn't rate Ace's solo higher. It's a perfect album. The weakest album is always Peter's. But strictly KISS the weakest is Love Gun. You really can't go wrong with any of the 70's records if big dumb rock is interesting. Destroyer might be a good one to start with if you are a big Alice or BOC fan. Personally I can't make it all the way thru a Ted record except the old greatest hits one. Way too much filler. He really had no business being mentioned in this ranking.
@@captainkirk70 Thank you for the suggestions. Blue Oyster Cult is a top 5 favorite band of mine so they would have dominated my top 10. In high school I was a drummer in a band and we played two Kiss songs, Love Gun and Firehouse. I preferred Firehouse so the first album may be my starting point. I'm sure I'll enjoy the 70's Kiss stuff because I like dumb, silly lyrics 70's rock like Ted Nugent, and Kiss can be just as dumb of not dumber than Ted. I like my music intelligent like Peter Hammill, and I like my music stupid like Ted. 😂
@@aldebaran4154 They really were good song writers. 99% of people prefer the versions on Alive. And I certainly used to. But as I got older I started to like the studio versions. They're kinda charming. And none of records sound the same except for songwriting style. If you find that the studio cuts are kinda lacking then definitely give Alive a whirl before giving up. It's those songs on steroids. KISS probably would have broken up without it as their records weren't living up to their concerts. They were deeply in debt because those records weren't selling and their shows were expensive to put on. I greatly prefer KISS to Ted. Alice would have been a better pick especially since they put the Amboy Dukes records into the mix.I think the Alice run from Love it to Death to Billion Dollar Babies is just fantastic. I think you will dig them. But then there's the nostalgia factor to think about. I was 8 in '78 and KISS was like a dream band for a kid. My walls were covered in their posters. Really tasty solos by Ace too. They're like songs within songs. I know them without really knowing them if that makes sense. Definitely give Destroyer a chance. It's generally looked at as their finest studio record. Total Bob Ezrin production. And for a Greatest Hits I recommend Double Platinum. It came out in 1978 and alot of care was put into it to make the different productions into a cohesive sound. For me, it's all about burnout. I rarely reach for an album these days but they are in my DNA by now. I'm 54. Since you're a drummer you'll probably either love or hate Peter. But many highly technical drummers love him and know he was integral to the original sound that made them famous. Without him it would kinda be like John Bonham playing with the Beatles. But not comparing him to Bonham or Ringo. And Peter definitely doesn't make or break a KISS song.
Kiss 70's is Killer!
@@jimilove7773 Absolutely. A lot of people hate them, and for awhile I thought it was maybe just nostalgia but they really were great. Especially when you compare them to others in their category. I wouldn't put them against the Stones or Zeppelin but they made far better albums than people give them credit for. Only a few filler tracks during their heyday. I even love The Elder. Lol. But I stop when the make up came off. Plus Ace was always my favorite member. I remember when I went to the Creatures tour the ad in the paper was a picture of the cover. Had no idea Ace wasn't still in the band. They kept that secret as long as they could. I think the show was one of the first dates on the tour. As a kid I had no idea that Peter and Ace weren't playing on some of the make up albums. Just took the cover for granted. It was a bummer that night but I got over it and still enjoyed the show. But had no idea who was playing guitar. I don't think they introduced Vinny at all.
4 of my favorite artists from the 70s. Great show guys. I still play a lot of these.
I love The Red and the Black. Great one.
Aerosmith Rocks is my number one.
2. Toys In The Attic
3. Ted Nugent
4. Kiss first album
5. B.O.C Mirrors.
That's my top five. Great episode and not surprising where Pete and Martin ranked their albums.
Really great show again! As for Alice Cooper maybe all his albums til 84 combining with Van Halen, Moxy, Starz, Montrose/Gamma and Legs Diamond Albums of the same time period would make an interesting show. Keep up the great work

These mix up and rank shows are wonderful, and having Martin and Peter together is greater than the sum of the parts. I love the challenge of opinions and I also love the agreement. There are loads of good topics to wish for, for example hair metal, big 4 thrash albums, grunge, British 70s glam, US metal before hair metal, 90s metal, nu metal, in case you need some ideas!
To honest glam metal grunge and nu metal, there not going to cover its Been said in a lot of his videos that those genres he's not a fan of so I would be SHOCKED if they coverd those 3 genres.
This video brings up a topic I think would be great for the show. “What are the best eras of different bands?” In other words, was it the beginning of their careers, middle or latter part which produced the best albums? Some bands come out of the gate on fire, others change towards the end for the better.
Martin was shielding himself with Secret Treaties against possible retaliation from Pete 😂
Great show. I loved all 4 of these bands. Still do
70's KISS was pure magic bud Ace Frehley always came up with a guitar solo you could hum too bad the drugs and alcohol took their toll on him.
These shows are great for rediscovery. When you both had Night in the Ruts ranked high I thought to myself that album is weak. However, since I value both of your opinions I revisited and wow what was I thinking in the past. This is an underrated gem. Thank you both.
Draw the Line has a really unique sound . Buried in reverb , and phasers. It's like turning the song Foghat - Slow Ride an entire album
here’s my top 15
1. Aerosmith Rocks
2. Aerosmith Toys in the Attic
3. BOC Secret Treaties
4. Kiss Debut
5. Aerosmith Get your Wings
6. Kiss Rock n Roll Over
7. Aerosmith Draw the Line
8. BOC Mirrors
9. Aerosmith self titled debut
10. BOC Tyranny and Mutation
11. Ted Nugent self titled debut
12. Aerosmith Night in the Ruts
13. Kiss Love Gun
14. BOC self titled debut
15. Kiss Destroyer
Rock and Roll Over is their best IMO. And I was a HUGE KISS fan in the 70's
When KISS had a healthy Ace Frehley playing those magical guitar solos in the 70's they were Rock And Roll at it's best. Then the drugs and alcohol took over, a real shame.
Brilliant format gents love the shows
Great show guys 👍👍. Thanks! from a 62 y/o rocker.
Great show thank you per usual gents!

Love Night in the Ruts!

Wish Martin and Peter would do an in depth on
Teaze!
Moxy!

Kiss had 3 perfect albums ,Hotter,RNR Over and Creatures..Nugent had Tooth,Fang,Claw and some other near perfect albums as well. What a steady career he's actually had , putting out great/good albums for 56 years in 3 different bands.
When KISS had a healthy Ace Frehley playing those magical guitar solos in the 70's they were Rock And Roll at it's best. Then the drugs and alcohol took over, a real shame.
The more I watch these guys the more it seems my tastes gravitate towards Pete vs Martin which is interesting because Martin has had so much influence in what I listen too now, crazy
Gotta agree with Pete on this one. Secret Treaties is just a special album beyond compare. It's one of a handful that I can think of where nearly every track could compete for my favorite on the album depending on my mood. Albert Bouchard's vocals on Dominance and Submission are totally underrated as well, nobody ever talks about how he kills it in that song.
I've really been digging these Friday shows!!! Looking forward to the next one.
Career of Evil - its funny "I will not apologize" and its great.
Pretty much the classic rock list for beginners I commented on yesterday……. Lol classic and very correct Pete.
Pete says “You’re breaking my heart Martin”…..Martin breaks my heart so often. Drives me nuts with some of the things he says about some of my favorite artists, songs, albums….yet I still like the guy haha. Love these ranking videos guys!!
Got to see Ted Nugent one time, he was opening for Aerosmith, who I managed to see ten times, and KISS twice. Never saw BOC, my loss. So I am mostly an Aerosmith fan, then early KISS, then Ted then BOC. They're all great, but I like what I like.
70's KISS was pure magic bud Ace Frehley always came up with a guitar solo you could hum too bad the drugs and alcohol took their toll on him.
1. Aerosmith- Rocks
2. KISS- Destroyer
3. Blue Öyster Cult- Agents of Fortune
4. Ted Nugent- Cat Scratch Fever
This is why I make up my own mind on music.
Absolutely loved this episode and I'm on board for anymore that continue in this vein (essentially; you'll understand if there's just some bands I don't care about).
Looking forward to Pete's review of BOC's Ghost Stories
randomly….i just bought a Ted Nugent t shirt off of Amazon & sent my sister Great Gonzos on cd for her birthday
Have to strongly disagree with Martin on the "the black and white" Blue Oyster Cult albums. Those first 3 albums are phenomenal and their best in my view
Absolutely. He broke my heart with that take
Question for Martin. Why a dilike of the B&W period? That was the birth of Sand-Oyster-Cult. Without that period, and Sandy Pearlman. They would have never launched. (Period). And all those 'deep dives' performed still today! The are amazing how they took those. Then built around them. Just enough to justify a reason for it 'all'.....
You guys could do a live albums rating for these 4 groups. It would be Epic!
I think for me Double Live Gonzo would take the #1 spot...On Your Feet/Some Enchanted Evening are good records (and about 'equal' for me), ahead of Survival Of The Fittest. I think Live Bootleg (Aerosmith) is kinda weak. No Kiss for me

Two guys who disagree amicably. Rare in these contentious days. Great vid, thanks!

I had to laugh when Martin talked about "Tyranny & Mutation". Even though I love the first side, I really don't remember the songs on the 2nd side 😄
I prefer the second side of tyranny&Mutation to any "side" on their first three records.
Aerosmith is my second favorite band and I think the debut is greatly underrated! Yes the production sucks but Movin Out, Mama Kin, One Way Street, obviously Dream On. Not on the same level as Toys or Rocks or Wings but underrated
Riff on Movin Out kicks ass! Great fuckin album despite lousy production. But that’s expected for first album in early 70s for unknowns.
As my Dad always said, B.O.C. RULES
Great show guys. I think Alice Cooper would have fit even better than BOC.
Now I've ranked these albums but I must say ahead of the list. I've never been into BOC as much as the other three principal groups. Now I've seen Kiss 10 times starting in 1975.
I've seen Aerosmith 6 times starting in 1976
I've seen Ted Nugent 11 times starting in 1976 when he opened for Black Sabbath & blew them off the stage.
Now Blue Oyster Cult I've seen them 3 times & it's never been because of them. I seen Rainbow open for them. I seen the Black & Blue tour with Sabbath when Dio was in the band. And the last time they was part of the Summer Daze Tour with Steppenwolf, Foghat & Pat Travers. Oh, & I've seen Alice Cooper 16 times starting in 1973.

Pretty much 100% agree with Pete, though I'd have the first Blue Oyster Cult album a little higher, love their black and white era.

Hey Pete, Can you do a PSA about tinnitus & taking care of your ears as a muic fan? I've been suffering from it because of too many loud shows & as a musician being onstage & too many hrs of recording with loud headphones on. Can't listen to music like I used to because certain frequencies that make the condition worse day to day. Musicians like Huey Lewis, Ozzy, Neil Young, Lars, Pete Townsend, Dave Grohl, Moby & Streisand have publicly dicussed of heir suffering from tinnitus. One loud show can cause it for a lifetime. It sucks! Thanks Pete, love your channel!
Funny you brought up Alice. My first thought was Ted out Alice in would be a perfect 4. Kiss, Aerosmith, Alice and Boc. Thats a helluva
KISS, Ted and Aerosmith I associate together more than both Alice and BOC, but if you’re going to do American hard rock/proto-metal, Alice definitely belongs somewhere.
Soon as they announced this show I thought Alice should have been part of it more the BOC. If any I think they should be out
70's KISS was pure magic bud Ace Frehley always came up with a guitar solo you could hum too bad the drugs and alcohol took their toll on him.
In high school we cranked up Stranglehold to do warm ups before our wrestling matches. We did this with cranked up boom boxes linked around away matches … they hates us. 😂
One thing that woulda been cool to see (or potentially still, minus KISS) would've been like a ranking of heavy glam catalogs from the 70s: Alice Cooper, Sweet, KISS, Angel.
I don't agree with Martin on a lot of things, but we seem to share the same opinions on BOC.
#TeamPete All The Way !
Dude the mutton chops comment will have me laughing this whole fuckin week.
I think the last two Amboy Dukes albums are really underrated
Honestly I think Tooth,Fang,Claw is far better than any Aerosmith album, and better than most Nugent solo albums.

“Thick, coagulated, druggie , but still pretty heavy kind of quite produced, wall of sound., different ways to sound stonesy and hard rocky at the same time”. I love Draw the Line ❤ as well. Please do a show on bands last Great albums.
I will kick it off with Draw the Line, State of Shock, 1977, 79 respectively.
Be interesting to see how those Slayer albums fare on Martin’s list next week 😬
Aerosmith's Rocks an easy top 10 all-time album for me and nothing else here in my top 100. Majority of top 10 on today's topic would be other Aerosmith. Kiss first album good.
"Clanky & Depressing" will be the name of my new band🎉😂
Gonna be interesting next week. Only 11 albums in the 80’s from the big 4.
No there's 4 each from Metallica,Slayer,Anthrax and 3 Megadeth...15 total..+ 4 EPs + 1 Live.
Rocks is the best of the lot.
I agree!
those black and white boc albums had the best song titles but they were never as heavy as you imagined they would be
A great idea for a follow up show would be to do all the same bands, but now rank all the 80s albums, including joe Perry project, frehleys comet etc
Secret Treaties, Rocks, Toys In The Attic and Ted Nugent are easily the best four albums of the 33 LPs reviewed.
Rocks!!!!!
Martin is so weird with his taste in music, but he has such a nice energy that I can't hate him. Music is subjective and that is what makes it interesting.
"Funny" how you dislike BOC's black & white era. Many of us thought BOC went "downhill" after their 1975 OYFOOYK. When "Mirrors" came out, I remember thinking "What the hell is this???"
This was interesting...My Top 20:

20. “Paul Stanley”
Blue Oyster Cult is the best of these ands hands down.
Aerosmith to me is only their first four albums. Kiss, I liked them and saw them a few times but they have not endured for me. Nugent is fringe for me and I walked out on him the only time I saw him. Scorpions blew him off the stage.
Wow, I'm like dying listening to Martin knock the Ace Frehley solo album, Paul Stanley, Love Gun, Rock n' Roll Over, KISS, jeez...
Idk I think the first Kiss album has more good, memorable riffs and hooks than the entire Aerosmith catalog...I just have different ears than Martin lol
That outro riff for "Let Me Know" was bad freaking ass
Kiss is and will always be my favorite band but I'll take Uncle Ted's debut over any on this list. Stone cold classic. I'd also take Peter's solo album over Gene's anytime, all the time.
70's KISS was pure magic bud Ace Frehley always came up with a guitar solo you could hum too bad the drugs and alcohol took their toll on him.
So as a Stones fan must say that any comparison to hard rock would be misplaced. As songwriters the Stones are leaps and bounds above most hard rockers and have been for decades. As musos too. That they don’t choose to play harder is a preference
I think Kiss to music journalists were like the Japanese in a Chinese Kung Fu movie or like Republicans to the liberal media lol ..They either just don't get it or they do get it and pretend to be deaf....I mean those initial 9 albums from Kiss define quality rock !
For the first time that I can remember I agree more with Martin than with Pete’s top 11 - I am older than both - but from the UK - and into zeppelin/sabbath/purple(&children)/Heep. Still into BOC/Aerosmith/Nugent but never impressed by Kiss.

The last 10 were tough, often decided by one strong song putting it higher over another. The lyrics on most of Ted's stuff mean little to me so I sort of arranged them by favorite instrumental moments. If the list included live albums it would have been even tougher.

What songs did Crespo actually play the leads on Night In Ruts?
Speaking of BOC...Just checked out their 'newest' = Ghost Stories. It actually seems to be one of those 'label obligation' releases (in other words not something the band really wanted to do, after all 2020's Symbol was supposed to be it...). This is a collection of older material (some dating back to the late 70's)/reimagined and newly completed songs.
Now I'm not the biggest BOC fan, I like their more 'polished' stuff, so I'll quote one recent review: "most fans will know what they’re getting, some casual fans who don’t know the back story will just assume it’s a brand new collection of songs. Some fans will feel disappointed regardless because of the high bar the band set with previous releases". OK...I do like "Cherry" & "The Only Thing". Strange (for BOC) cover of The Beatles' "If I Fell" - not bad, just doesn't sound at all like BOC (to me anyway)...Be interesting what more hard core BOC fans will think of this...
Get your wings takes the #1 spot for me. I’m a huge Kiss and BOC fan and am frankly of the opinion that Aerosmith is a tad overrated but this album is perfect all the way through. It has heavy songs, smooth rockers, cool concepts, their best album by far.
I think I'm the only one that likes Peter Criss solo album
The only song I like on that album is "I Can't Stop The Rain."
Love the album! You are not alone
Looks like 2 people like Peter criss' solo album
The album cover is great
That alone is worth having the album
It has its moments for sure. Not as bad everyone says.
Not the only. There are several others! You like what you like.
This is a Martin disagreeing with you Martin on Aerosmith's 1st album. Always been a favorite of mine. Although I have to skip over Dream On because it's been way over-played.
my ranking is easier: 1- Blue Oyster Cult , 2- Aerosmith , 3 - Kiss and 4 - Ted Nigent
Martin has lost his mind.....or his hearing...in my opinion. Lol. Not in a mean spirited way but in a what is he talking bout sort of way.😅
I enjoyed this, but I cannot get so objective.I put the album or CD on and just listen to it without any kind of thought processes. There are songs I like on all of these, but songs that I consider filler,I might skip over it. Seen Ted 7 times, seen Aerosmith 2 times, saw KISS 6 times and BOC 44 times,so I do enjoy quite a few of the albums or CDs that have in your bottom 11.Good show.
How can you rank BOC’s debut below Mirrors? Unbelievable.
Secret Treaties is the correct answer
I've decided to dip my toe into the world of Ted Nugent so I've just ordered one of those 5 disc original album box sets to introduce me to his work, for some reason he never really caught on here in the UK.
That aside Pete have you ever seen the sci fi movie Runaway starring Tom Selleck And Kiss's very own Gene Simmons I just re watched it again recently and it's terrible, The Elder of Gene's acting career.
Hopefully that box set includes his Double Live Gonzo. It's Nugent at his best, a really first class live album
@@wolf1977 It doesn't but if I take a liking to his work I'll be sure to get it I appreciate the recommendation Wolf.
Andrew you ain't seen nothing if you've never seen Never Too Young To Die. Gene is the bad guy in that one opposite good guy John Stamos!
I never understood why the Aerosmith debut doesn't rank higher. There are some really good groovy songs on it. Secret Treates would be in my top 3 easily alongside with Toys and Rocks - a sythesis of Pete's and Martin's choices :)
Toys selling much better than Rocks makes sense to me.I've listened to both often and agree with what most think about Toys, yet with Rocks it's like I'm not getting the praise, like my version is missing something lol I seriously like 7 tracks on Toys more than my favorite song off Rocks..
