Sabotage is "one of those albums you need to stop and listen to"...which is why it's my favorite BS LP. There's plenty of headbanging on there, and a lot of introspective parts too, like the acoustic passage at the end of "Symptom of the Universe", just beautiful.
Sorry to anyone who disagrees, but IMO Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage are this band's absolute pinnacle. Nothing else in their catalog even comes close to these 2 masterpieces, which have both aged unbelievably well.
Maybe peaked at Sabotage, but I listen to Tech Ecs and Never Say Die more than the first four albums. Granted, NOTHING from Sab sucks, though Forbidden is the turd in the punchbowl.
I’ve always felt that Ozzy-Era Sabbath peaked on Sabotage, which I feel is the heaviest record ever made. I remember reading an interview with Zakk Wylde that when he first joined Ozzy’s band, he told Oz that he shouldn’t be doing pop metal like Shot In The Dark, but needed to make a record more like Sabotage. I’ve always respected the hell out of Zakk for that!

Sabotage isn't the heaviest Ozzy era album. Listen to how thin the guitars sound. If you play guitar, you'd understand. Volume 4 is their heaviest. You can even make an argument and say the 1st 5 Sabbath records are equally heavy.
I think this was the first appearance by Alo on SoT. I watched this series and then the Priest series multiple times. They are what got me hooked on SoT on UA-cam and then the website.

I went backstage with Sabbath in 1990 at Wolverhampton Civic Hall, I met Ronnie, Cozy and Tony ,Tony bought me a Beer ;), I sat on a Barrel in the middle of them, I was truly not worthy...
Ozzy stopped to ask me directions to the concert venue in Leicester (De Montfort Hall) as I as walking along Narborough Road. He was in the back of a big grey Citroen car... didn't click who it was at first 'til I noticed the 'OZZY' tattoos on his fingers...this was back in 1980.
I was fortunate to be at their last ever gig in feb 2017. I live in Coventry which is only about 10 miles from the NEC in Birmingham which is a ten minute train ride from my home town. The amount of people that came from the other side of the world just for that gig is enough proof of their iconic brilliance.
If Geezer hates his lyrics, he really shouldn’t. I think they were the perfect compliment to Iommi’s monumental riffs. I much prefer them to Robert Plant’s lyrics for Zeppelin, for example.
an old friend (63)of mine (hey Dave) always was on top of the cutting edge .he was into the MC5.he had the house to himself one weekend, and had a state of the art stereo for that era. he was playing that debut SABBATH record, loudly. I thought the world was ending.I'll never forget that day. he'd always have his older brother's(he had a garage band) records. even the STOOGES.
I never really got into Dio era Sabbath until just a few years ago because I was such a Rainbow and Ozzy fan that I was just so biased to it. Another case of I'm glad I finally talked myself into getting into them.
I love Sabbath, probably in my top 5. They were cool , they were original, and I can hear their influence on modern rock bands today like Muse, Artic Monkeys, Coheed and Cambria, etc.
I love every Black Sabbath album. I even like some songs from the Forbidden album. My favorite is and has been Sabotage for many years. Songs like Hole In The Sky, Symptom Of The Universe, and especially Megalomania are MASTERPIECES to me.
You know, if I were to go back in time and attend a show from a big rock and roll tour, it would be the Black And Blue Tour. I don't think you could get any better than that.

Granted, I didn't like it at 1st, but in the last 20 years I developed a deep appreciation for it. Ozzy sounded great on it. How can you say he doesn't? He was hitting notes he never hit before. Listen to "Air Dance". That's a perfect example. I love Johnny Blade and Shock Wave. Excellent Underrated stuff.
i was introduced to rock music by my older brother with a tune called symptom of the universe. as a 10 year old i was blown away. always been my favorite band . like side one of never say die and the ozzy era ends there.
You are such kids. The first time I heard Black Sabbath on the radio, I had found my music. Toni played heavy, melodic guitar that later heavy metal never equaled.
Sabotage was the first tape that caught my attention, and after listening to it, I was drawn to the sound back in 1997. Then ended up buying the first of their cassettes to Born again, then once I didn't hear Ozzy, I left it from Dio and Ian Gillan. Then bought the CDs to eventually vinyl, from first to Heaven and Hell.
I think for people who only seem to like Black Sabbath when doing heavy riff albums it makes them not complete fans. Personally, albums like "Technical Ecstasy" and "Never Say Die" are great albums. I like when the band takes different directions and it is as it should be. Imagine if bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, etc., hadn't done so? Man, how much would the world have missed out on? I basically like everything Black Sabbath has done to varying degrees I admit. For example, "The Eternal Idol" and "Forbidden" I would rank as two star albums. The rest are three stars and above for me.

When it comes to my favorite Sabbath album of all time it is always a tie between vol. 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, but Sabbath Bloody Sabbath always comes on top and will probably always be my all time number one favorite of theirs
I was at Black n Blue Sunday in Detroit 1980 and caught the Mob Rules Tour in Calgary 1982. With Dio, it all made sense. Still enjoy the first 6 Sabbath (with Ozzy) albums but Iommi and Dio were an incomparable duo. \m/
Tremendous band. My God,what the hell was in the water all over the UK at that time? classic after classic after classic albums,bands and artists galore.
HAHAA!!! The Mob Rules tour was my first time seeing Sabbath, as well, AND the opening band, Wrabit, also got booed off the stage! I had one foot in the grave with the flu but there was no possible way I was going to miss that show!! I recall being severely disappointed and slightly angry that Sabbath only played for about 70 minutes, but it was still a monumental occasion and the first of the many times I was fortunate enough to see Ronnie.
So I am reading Martin Popoff's "Sabotage" and enjoying it. Pete's videos and Martin's books are great Companion pieces to digging into these discographies. Chris you are a Super fan. How lucky we are to have Spotify so someone mentions a song and you can pause and go listen to it. Cheers guys!!
I was born into rock and metal with Paranoid, War Pigs and Iron Man, when I first listened to these masterpieces back in the mid 90s, I was around 13-14 back then...oh boy good memories from my early days...
I really like the Never Say Die title tune - the thing is, it's hard rock, not metal. But it has a terrific spirit and energy. Fair play to them for doing something outside their usual parameters.
I saw sabbath in 1975 in new jersey right before sabotage came out. they played hole in the sky ,symptom of the universe and meglomania. EPIC ! Blown away
Self titled album changed my life.Was lucky enough to see Sabbath in the 70's,which was The time to see them.Kind of liked Heaven & Hell album, but saw them on Black & Blue tour and my group of friends and I did not care for Ronnie's over dramatic versions of the classic songs.First 3 albums are my favorites and love all the Ozzy albums to varying degrees.Heaven & Hell and Born Again are very good too. Sabbath live on Kirschner's Rock Concert '75 is about as heavy as it gets.
When In the 70s did you see Sabbath? How high was Ozzy? Lol. Anyway, I agree with your Dio comment singing the classic stuff. It didn't work and I'm sure Ozzy wouldn't sound good singing the Dio era stuff either. Gillan was amazing. Too bad Born Again wasn't mixed good in the 1st place. Still a solid record. Gillan saved Sabbath.

Ozzy was good and I got a bootleg recording of the show I saw in Chicago just a few years ago and it confirmed my opinion that it was a pretty good show. Ozzy was good. Agree with everything else you said. Gillan was awesome with Sabbath and Ozzy would not sound good singing Dio songs.

Another excellent vid. I came late to Sabbath. But once I got there.... Loving the remasters. I was 16 in '79 too. AC/DC was ( and still is, at least the Bon Scott era) my idea of rock. Didn't know the Paranoid title story. Keep informing us!

I am not a sabbath fan and i love Never Say Die! It is the only album i listened to from Sabbath for years. 1977-1979 rock albums are very underrated. I prefer any hard rock album of 1978 to all the sucking 80's and 90's and 21th century :) you are great btw thank you :)
I really enjoy your videos, Pete and Chris is a cool, knowledgable counterpart. It’s nice to see guys with a real passion for rock music, who have the chops to speak intelligently and not make me puke with their sheer ignorance. I’m in CT and have been to The Paramount many times. I’d love to meet you guys sometime, have a few beers and talk shop. A couple nit-picky things: The instrumental track on Sabotage is “SuperTZAR” (as in, emperor, often spelled “czar”), not SuperSTAR. It was used as their intro music for many years afterwards (with Fluff, from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath as outro music), as I’m sure you guys know. Pete, you said Ronnie wrote “most” of the lyrics on H&H; indeed he wrote them all, much to Geezer’s relief. Chris, your recall on dates is at savant level! It’s actually slightly scary, but I guess that suits the subject matter! Catch you guys on another of your great videos.
Never Say Die imo is a better album than Technical Ecstasy. It is really unfairly criticized. It has some really good material on it, such as Johnny Blade (heavy in a modern forward moving way), Junior's Eyes, Shock Wave (a really heavy riff at the breakdown) and Air Dance (a gorgeous song). In fact, I think even the other songs are interesting and catchy. As for Sabotage, it had Symptom of the Universe (one of the first songs to set the blueprint for Thrash music of the 80's) and the insanely epic Megalomania. On Technical Ecstasy, I like Backstreet Kids, You Won't Change Me (very creepy sounding), She's Gone and Dirty Women (we get to hear Ozzy scream out the lyrics in an angry way). In fact, if you combine those 4 songs on Technical Ecstasy with the 4 ones I like from Never Say Die, it would have been an epic album.
The Black and Blue tour made a stop here in Buffalo at the Memorial Auditorium, I couldn't have been happier. A show of a lifetime. In fact, my lifetime almost ended as I got t-boned by a cement truck wearing my Black and Blue Tee. Fuckers cut it off of me, my eventual first mother in law sewed it back to together before I got out of the hospital. Bless her heart and may she rest in peace.
Pete, We have apparently attended a lot of the same shows. I was at the Meadow Lands for the Mob Rules tour and Radio City for the Heaven and Hell show that was filmed for the video. Can you consider making a video about your rock book collection. Assuming you have some.
The story Geezer tells is that he was on the way to a rehearsal and he saw the cinema queues for the film Black Sabbath starring Boris Karloff and he realised that people like to be scared so he suggested that the band make scary music. The CD timing is wrong for what was side 2 of the first album. They have it as "Sleeping Village" being longer than "Warning" but "Warning" is the actual longer track. "Sleeping Village" is only 3:46 long while "Warning" is 10:26 long. The confusion arises because there is a distinct pause in "Warning" where as there is a sustained note at the end of "Sleeping Village" leading into the bass intro to "Warning". If you don't believe me listen to the whole of the two songs together. The intro/riff of "Warning" is unmistakeably different to Sleeping Village.
I saw them live in Cannon Hill Park Birmingham in I think, 1968 before they had made their first album. Ozzie said that some of the audience may know them as Earth, but they had changed their name to Black Sabbath as there was already a band with the name Earth. Also they had just signed a record deal. On the same bill was Tea & Symphony and The Deviants.
I know this opinion may be popular, but I thought the first album was one of the most groundbreaking moments in music. Being 16 years old and impressionable at the time made it that much more impactful. That's a factor too -- not "discovering" something, but hearing something when it's new to the world -- that is powerful. When the second album came out, it didn't seem as polished as the first but it still had great songs. After that, they just started to repeat thmeselves and I lost interest. Sorry. Maybe it's because as a musician my knowledge was developing and my taste changed accordingly. But that first album still holds up as being as awesome as ever. And it's not just nostalgia. It really is that great.

For me, it's Paranoid. The drumming by Bill Ward and the production of his drums are legendary on this record.

I honestly think that bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were the true heirs of the Sabbath sound.

When it comes to my favorite Sabbath album of all time it is always a tie between vol. 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, but Sabbath Bloody Sabbath always comes on top and will probably always be my all time number one favorite of theirs

I was at Black n Blue Sunday in Detroit 1980 and caught the Mob Rules Tour in Calgary 1982. With Dio, it all made sense. Still enjoy the first 6 Sabbath (with Ozzy) albums but Iommi and Dio were an incomparable duo. \m/

HAHAA!!! The Mob Rules tour was my first time seeing Sabbath, as well, AND the opening band, Wrabit, also got booed off the stage! I had one foot in the grave with the flu but there was no possible way I was going to miss that show!! I recall being severely disappointed and slightly angry that Sabbath only played for about 70 minutes, but it was still a monumental occasion and the first of the many times I was fortunate enough to see Ronnie.
Pete had me at the Born Again tee. All the cred I require.
So I am reading Martin Popoff's "Sabotage" and enjoying it. Pete's videos and Martin's books are great Companion pieces to digging into these discographies. Chris you are a Super fan.

I really like the Never Say Die title tune - the thing is, it's hard rock, not metal. But it has a terrific spirit and energy. Fair play to them for doing something outside their usual parameters.
I saw sabbath in 1975 in new jersey right before sabotage came out. they played hole in the sky ,symptom of the universe and meglomania. EPIC ! Blown away

Led Zeppelin released their first two albums in 1969. Many bands did that back in the day.
Self titled album changed my life.Was lucky enough to see Sabbath in the 70's,which was The time to see them.Kind of liked Heaven & Hell album, but saw them on Black & Blue tour and my group of friends and I did not care for Ronnie's over dramatic versions of the classic songs.First 3 albums are my favorites and love all the Ozzy albums to varying degrees.Heaven & Hell and Born Again are very good too. Sabbath live on Kirschner's Rock Concert '75 is about as heavy as it gets.
When In the 70s did you see Sabbath? How high was Ozzy? Lol. Anyway, I agree with your Dio comment singing the classic stuff. It didn't work and I'm sure Ozzy wouldn't sound good singing the Dio era stuff either. Gillan was amazing. Too bad Born Again wasn't mixed good in the 1st place. Still a solid record. Gillan saved Sabbath.
@@antimurphy8212 I saw them in '78 on Never Say Die tour.While they were a bit past their peak,I thought they were still very good. Ozzy was good and I got a bootleg recording of the show I saw in Chicago just a few years ago and it confirmed my opinion that it was a pretty good show. Ozzy was good. Agree with everything else you said. Gillan was awesome with Sabbath and Ozzy would not sound good singing Dio songs.

A Hard Road from Never Say Die is an awfully under-rated album, it was even a hit and they appeared on Top Of The Pops.
I saw the Mob Rules tour in Feb 1982 with special guests Doc Holiday and Molly Hatchet in Charlotte NC truly an incredible evening!

I'm a big fan of Technical Ecstasy. I think the guitar sound on the Never Say Die LP is definitely more scooped and has even more treble than his earlier sounds.
Another excellent vid. I came late to Sabbath. But once I got there.... Loving the remasters. I was 16 in '79 too. AC/DC was ( and still is, at least the Bon Scott era) my idea of rock. Didn't know the Paranoid title story. Keep informing us!

I am not a sabbath fan and i love Never Say Die! It is the only album i listened to from Sabbath for years. 1977-1979 rock albums are very underrated. I prefer any hard rock album of 1978 to all the sucking 80's and 90's and 21th century :) you are great btw thank you :)

I really enjoy your videos, Pete and Chris is a cool, knowledgable counterpart. It’s nice to see guys with a real passion for rock music, who have the chops to speak intelligently and not make me puke with their sheer ignorance. I’m in CT and have been to The Paramount many times. I’d love to meet you guys sometime, have a few beers and talk shop. A couple nit-picky things: The instrumental track on Sabotage is “SuperTZAR” (as in, emperor, often spelled “czar”), not SuperSTAR. It was used as their intro music for many years afterwards (with Fluff, from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath as outro music), as I’m sure you guys know. Pete, you said Ronnie wrote “most” of the lyrics on H&H; indeed he wrote them all, much to Geezer’s relief. Chris, your recall on dates is at savant level! It’s actually slightly scary, but I guess that suits the subject matter! Catch you guys on another of your great videos.

Never Say Die imo is a better album than Technical Ecstasy. It is really unfairly criticized. It has some really good material on it, such as Johnny Blade (heavy in a modern forward moving way), Junior's Eyes, Shock Wave (a really heavy riff at the breakdown) and Air Dance (a gorgeous song). In fact, I think even the other songs are interesting and catchy. As for Sabotage, it had Symptom of the Universe (one of the first songs to set the blueprint for Thrash music of the 80's) and the insanely epic Megalomania. On Technical Ecstasy, I like Backstreet Kids, You Won't Change Me (very creepy sounding), She's Gone and Dirty Women (we get to hear Ozzy scream out the lyrics in an angry way). In fact, if you combine those 4 songs on Technical Ecstasy with the 4 ones I like from Never Say Die, it would have been an epic album.
The Black and Blue tour made a stop here in Buffalo at the Memorial Auditorium, I couldn't have been happier. A show of a lifetime. In fact, my lifetime almost ended as I got t-boned by a cement truck wearing my Black and Blue Tee. Fuckers cut it off of me, my eventual first mother in law sewed it back to together before I got out of the hospital. Bless her heart and may she rest in peace.

Pete, We have apparently attended a lot of the same shows. I was at the Meadow Lands for the Mob Rules tour and Radio City for the Heaven and Hell show that was filmed for the video. Can you consider making a video about your rock book collection. Assuming you have some.
I have Black and Blue on DVD, and I am actually in the footage.
The story Geezer tells is that he was on the way to a rehearsal and he saw the cinema queues for the film Black Sabbath starring Boris Karloff and he realised that people like to be scared so he suggested that the band make scary music. The CD timing is wrong for what was side 2 of the first album. They have it as "Sleeping Village" being longer than "Warning" but "Warning" is the actual longer track. "Sleeping Village" is only 3:46 long while "Warning" is 10:26 long. The confusion arises because there is a distinct pause in "Warning" where as there is a sustained note at the end of "Sleeping Village" leading into the bass intro to "Warning". If you don't believe me listen to the whole of the two songs together. The intro/riff of "Warning" is unmistakeably different to Sleeping Village.

I saw them live in Cannon Hill Park Birmingham in I think, 1968 before they had made their first album. Ozzie said that some of the audience may know them as Earth, but they had changed their name to Black Sabbath as there was already a band with the name Earth. Also they had just signed a record deal. On the same bill was Tea & Symphony and The Deviants.

I know this opinion may be popular, but I thought the first album was one of the most groundbreaking moments in music. Being 16 years old and impressionable at the time made it that much more impactful. That's a factor too -- not "discovering" something, but hearing something when it's new to the world -- that is powerful. When the second album came out, it didn't seem as polished as the first but it still had great songs. After that, they just started to repeat thmeselves and I lost interest. Sorry. Maybe it's because as a musician my knowledge was developing and my taste changed accordingly. But that first album still holds up as being as awesome as ever. And it's not just nostalgia. It really is that great.
