"...dark and moody, industrial looking brickwork..." - I like that! Modeling techniques, artistry, and poetry, all in one clip! This is what makes the Humbrol channel so interesting.
i cant express how helpful these vids are on finding modelling paint etc.
There is also another option for washes, you can make them yourself. Just take some enamel paint of your choice and then add double the amount of enamel thinner and you've got yourself a cheap and just as good enamel wash
Wow, this is great. I had no idea this sort of thing was possible! Great effect.
Brilliant! Really looking forward to the weathering videos!
Humbrol products work well... These videos are honest and clear to understand.. Thanks
They work well on AFVs, nice one. I've used acrylic washes as well though, just thinned versions of regular colours with water from the tap.
Thanks guys these tutorials really help out
Cool stuff and great tutorial, very helpful. :)
Awesome ! More tools for us! Most excellent
Brilliant video. Look forward to the next installment. I may have to buy one of those Hornby sheds now. :)
Awesome Video! I love it!
i picked up a load of these last time i was in the shop pretty good stuff
Very useful! I wish I had a more wide access to those Humbrol products
Yes finally a video!
cant wait to try it..!! nice Video !! wanna see how the different is between the AK Interactive washes and the Humbrol products
GREAT PRODUCT ! THANK YOU HUMBROL ! MARK ANTHONY.
Could you make a video on how to use the weathering washes on model locos, wagons etc. please. Cheers
Great job!:)
We have several Enamel Matt Varnishes, Mattcote and Enamel Varnish Spray.
You should paint the model, add gloss varnish, add decals, then either add gloss varnish then the wash or add the wash then a matt varnish.
I love these video's, thanks for all the great tips.... my only complaint is they don't come around fast enough, chop chop ;)
I like black washes on models with a metallic finish it makes them look better because without the wash they look like toys.
But we actually build toys. : P
Yes we do!
Hi humbrol, i don't think you know how to reply to comments properly. Click on the comment.
First off im abit of model noob and this help answer and lot of questions n how to use washes ( had herd about them but knew little) While I don't build models typically know about in this country like planes and trains in build Gunpla's and Gundams ( scale models of a well know show from Japan.) but have the same issues like any other model with model lines or weathering
This depends of the overall finish your looking for. If you want a matt finish then leave it or apply a matt varnish once fully dry.
Now I want to go to my hobby shop and buy these kits.
I picked some up waiting with bated breath for the next vid any idea when it will be up thanks and keep up the good work
Thanks, one last thing what if I used weathering powder as well ?
How long do I need to leave the wash before cleaning up the excess? Also really nice videos very helpful and informative.
Yes, although test it first. Make sure that the acrylic paint is fully dry before applying Enamel Washes.
Can you use cheap white spirit instead of thinners to remove the wash ??
I used Humbrol gloss coat on an acrylic model, and applied humbrol enamel wash to the panel lines, when I used humbrol enamel thinners it stripped the wash, the gloss coat and acrylic pain underneath leaving the bare plastic visible. What did I do wrong?
can I brush the wash over the (for example) wing, and than wash it away?
Can i just get some matt cote (with brush) painted on or do i have to use the matt varnish?
It depends what look you are going for. We would struggle to recommend, we think it comes down to the individual and how you are going to mix and apply :-)
how do you clean the brush after using the wash?
hey u where's subtitles as l,m profoundly deaf please ?
Will the acrylic thinner work to clear the wash that's not needed
Yes.
Hmm gotta get myself one of these washes: After I paint my tanks they look toy like and the humbrol enamel/oil paint to me hides the details and seems the wash could bring those back. Just one thing I wonder: after I have painted my tank I shall use a spray primer and after that use the wash like in this video: But shall I let the wash dry completly and then use a cotton to dry away the wash I dont want left or with a brush with nothing added? Shouldnt the wash be permament after it has dried completly?
hello can you do me a list of your paint and varnish humbrol for me to buy and on which site you have them buy
Can I use enamel gloss on acrylic paint?
The airfix eurofighter typhoon, it's a grey sort of colour, which would you recommend for a panel line wash?
Mr Humbrol, was the olive drab base colour of the Comet tank applied with Acrylic or Enamel paint before having the Clear Gloss Varnish applied?
Can the Clear Gloss Varnish be applied over both acrylic and enamel paints?
can you spray the humbrol gloss varnish directly from the bottle without thinning it?
Anyway I perfer to paint with enamel paints (I like the finish and strength they have fully and a matt finished. So do you do a clear varnish in the mat that suitable for enamel paints ?. Also would I be correct that I should paint the model add decals Then the varnish/top coat and finally the wash ?
This would be of help, oh a typical Gunpla/gundam model kit is like the MASTER GRADE RX-78-2 GUNDAM VER. KA im building/painting atm
should i apply a clear cote afterwards?
I used a cotton bud dampened with Revell enamel thinners to remove a black wash applied over an Alclad gloss varnish, and it’s leaving behind a white residue. Any advice on how to remove it?
Yes, you will need to shake and stir it before use.
Do you need to stir it?
Hi, if I have painted the plastic model using Humbrol acrylic paints will it be ok to go with the Enamel washes and weather dyes from Humbrol? Or should I seal my acrylic painted parts before applying the Humbrol Enamel washes etc?
Hello! One question: ¿Enamel Thinners don´t remove Gloss Varnish?. My problem is I Can´t find this washes in my country, so my idea is catch black enamel paint and use thinner to liquite it. This way I have home made Wash. Same aplication. ¿Can it work?.
Regards!
I tried doing a wash using thinned humbrol enmel paint.I had coated the model with about 3 or 4 a bit heavy coats of humbrol clear. When applying the wash most of bit couldn't bite into the panel lines.Did I apply too much clear or did i thin the enamel paint too much?
Can you use the Enamel wash over acrylic paint and clear? Or is it only for use over enamel paint? Sorry... bit of a noob question I guess!
Is this Scalemodelmedic?
Btw great stuff!
You say that these Enamel Washes can be applied to a surface that has been painted with Humbrol Acrylic. I'm planning on spraying my whole model with the Humbrol Acrylic Satin Varnish as the final stage, will this be okay? or will it ruin the enamel wash? Thank you.
This would depend on the overall effect you wish to achieve, watch our weathering powder videos for more information.
When's the next video out I am sat hear with bated breath :-)
can i remove the remains with a Corton and 98% alcohol or doesn't that work. I only know that it does not damage or remove any paint. plz let me know
Do they sell these in europe?
I noticed these products are not available through the Hornby America site. Is there a reason for that?
I have tried several times to use the black wash for the lines as you do in the video and it never works, can you tell me how many coats of varnish you used please
Ive coated my model with humbrol clear and added a wash, when I use the enamel thinners to neaten it up a bit the paint work started to peel off, why is this? Any help with it?
I've found that Humbrol Enamel Thinners is quite a strong product - it can even effect acrylic paints! You might get a better result using plain white spirit - it's what I use to remove excess wash and it's been fine.
What humbrol clear? Acrylic l hope! Alway's(!!) use acrylics under your washes....
Please see our stockist section on the Humbrol website.
We woudl start with Dark Green and Grey.
I know this isn't about washes, but how did you get those decals on the Cromwell to stick like that. I'm currently making a Cromwell myself and my decals are not lying down on the model like that, they're just being pushed up by the raised bumps, can anyone give me tips?
+Munro Edwards Decal Fix sorts this out - put a load of it where the decal will go, apply the decal as normal, then brush Decal Fix over the decal and leave for at least 12 hours. The Decal Fix is very sticky and melts the decals slightly, as a result of which they settle down in to panel lines (as pointed out at 2:55 in this video) and over lumps and bumps.
Why does the enamel thinners eat right through the gloss coat, paint and primer, a minimal touch of a cotton bud destroys hours of work. What an I doing wrong?
Can this product (panel line wash) be used with matt colours or is it a must to use panel line wash over gloss coat / gloss colours? Have ordered my first panel line wash so intend to use em shortly...
Can be used with either gloss or matt finish no problem
Can these be airbrushed ?
hi I have a model airbrushed with revell enamel paint. two questions:
-can I use the weathering direct on the paint or I have to use a varnish first?
-do I have to spray with varnish on top of the weathering?
I'm still learning myself, but from my understanding you don't have to do anything before you weather, but a top clear coat or varnish is useful for protecting your weathering when handling your model. I've smudged and had to redo panel lines without it before.
I don't know what an enamel wash with thinner on enamel paint will do. I'd recommend testing on a plastic spoon.
It can but you MUST apply an acrylic clear coat. Future floor wax (has different names in different countries) Or you can use the paint mfg's acrylic gloss coat. Make sure you let it harden for at least 24hrs, preferably 36-48. Also, try not to mix mfg's. Stick to one throught the build. Different mfgs use different formulas and some acrylic gloss coats can "shatter" acrylic paints from another mfg.
Won't enamel thinner take enamel paint of or does clear coat prevent this
the gloss varnish applied over the paint should prevent the paint underneath from being damaged by the enamel thinner
When I wipe away the excess the black wash just smudges and ruins the paint work even though I’ve applied a gloss varnish first. I’m using a cotton bud with enamel thinner. What am I doing wrong?
I just ruined very good metalic paintjob and I also want to know the answer. Maybe varnish didn't cure enough or coat was to thin...
the enamel thinner just wipes away the paint on my model
This has happened to me as well, even after varnishing the model. I also get an extremely grainy and uneven finish with the wash, even after thoroughly mixing it.
is the paint that you used enamel? Enamel thinner will wipe the paint off and the wash
Alway's(!!) use acrylics under your washes....
Me too! I am using the exact products and techniques as shown in the video. Acrylic paint first. Then Humbrol Clear Gloss on top before using the washes. Washes seem to work pretty well on one coat of Humbrol Clear Gloss. But the minute you apply just the smallest amount of Humbrol Enamel Thinners, it strips the model back to the base primer layer. I thought that Humbrol Clear Gloss was supposed to protect the acrylics underneath! So very frustrating.
It sounds like you have thinned the paint down too much.
Bob Ross magic
To bad none of these washes are actually available.
We would advise testing on something else before you try it on your actual model. :-)
It depends what look you are going for. We would struggle to recommend, we think it comes down to the individual and how you are going to mix and apply :-)
