This is the definition of smashing it....hearing the crowd screaming Freddie's bits is so amazing it had an immediate effect on both Bowie and Annie....and Annie's outfit/makeup/character - most don't know this but she was portraying death and the disease that took Freddie and the battle he fought.....Her silver top represents armor he needed to fight physically and mentally what he endured from the disease and media and the black was death and the AIDS virus.....they are both singing one man's song. Bowie represents Freddie's life and Annie is death and disease and at the end they become one just as the disease took over Freddie, singing "this is our last dance and this is ourselves, under pressure." an emotional way of portraying Freddie's last days when living with media rumors of his sexuality and health and finally admitting defeat to the disease that took his life. A beautiful expression of a wonderful entertainer that we will all miss....bravo
One of my favorite things about this video is how Bowie is such a humble star. Annie Lennox obviously doing the Mercury parts shows off her vocal range and big performance. Bowie easily could’ve been the focus if he wanted to be. Instead he lets her command the stage and plays his role in the song perfectly being stoic and almost muted to her performance. Total perfection. He is so sorely missed.
Bowie, regardless of his stage persona, was always suave and always in command. Annie Lennox might be the only pop singer who could be more of a chameleon yet, in her own way, is every bit as commanding. Bowie was a given for doing this tribute, Annie was an inspired choice.

The shot of John Deacon from 0:47 to 0:52 is one of my favourite moments from live music. On a stage filled by 5 legends it would be easy to be overshadowed. Especially by the huge on-stage presences of Bowie, Lennox, May and Taylor. It's a wonderful 5 seconds of footage as Deacon sways to the rhythm in an old pair of jeans and a t-shirt, smiling reminiscently as he mesmerises the crowd with arguably the most recognised bassline of all time. In discussions of 'rock greats' Deacon can be easily overlooked due to his quiet persona. I personally view him as one the greatest bassists of all time. He's also my personal favourite, just pipping John Entwistle for first place.

I’m a huge Bowie fan and I saw him over a dozen or times in concert over the years. I was here at Wembley this day. It was a difficult task to outshine Bowie in any duet, but Annie Lennox did it here incredibly. One of the great rock performances. Hats off to Ms Lennox. ❤
Right before COVID lockdown started, we went to a Bowie tribute concert put on by all alumni Bowie Band members. They played all his songs, in order, from his albums, “The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” and “Diamond Dogs,” as well as numerous others of his hits. It was awesome. He was so creative.

Sadly I missed all of the greats way back in the day when I was listening to them, and trying to survive and do what's best for my family and myself.. But thanks to yt and those channels who have preserved the greats I get to look back and enjoy them 3rd hand many decades later...

I don't think this song is a boy-girl love song. I think it's more about loving people who need your help. And love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves

Is Anne no in it?
@@conboyle5592 Anne is awesome - however she didnt write the song and I think there is something about her performance style and always been that is inauthentic. People do love women - Kate Bush for example - Nina Simmone but the way a crowd responds is very different.
Women have a different style and there is nothing wrong with that. Can someone also explain to me - as someone who has been a life long Bowie fan how someone who can Dance as he can in the live recordings for TIME, John Im only Dancing, Lets Dance etc - suddenly turns into this nerdy awkward thing on the stage for this period of time - I mean the video for ''dancing on the streets'' - HOW DID THAT HAPPEN??? Was it a joke?
You must have rocks for ears. Neither of them can sing a note without going offkey, the music is very poor at best, and the whole delivery is lacklustre.
This song breaks all the rules. Beautifully.
Imagine having the balls to sub in for Freddie. She did a great job
...without the balls.
She had a high testosterone.
Um, every singer on the night stood in for Freddie, whether they had balls or not!
Gail Ann Dorsey does Freddie's part much better than Annie. No iffense.

Bravo Annie Lennox, avec tout le respect que je dois à ceux qui sont décedés, ton interprétation est hors norme, et qui d'autre que toi aurait pu livrer une telle performance? RIP Bowie et Freddie, et vive Annie!
The last bit that is sung while they are hugging is one of the most touching duet moments I've ever seen in a live show. Their emotions are physically visible through Bowie's eyes and Lennox's facial expressions
absolut!
David kept it cool while she was all over him like a cheap suit.

it’s hard to believe he’s a human lol these two are (were) regular human like us and did that whole performance in that moment of history. with so many people around. woww
It moved me, it made my ayes teary with emotions
The magnetism and presence of these two could power a city.

This is when people enjoyed the music, passed one down, and didn’t get distracted with a cell phone. 🙂

My God, they were beautiful. So glad technology let us capture this perfect moment forever.
Annie was amazing with David! Such a wonderful tribute to Freddie!
Her entire ensemble is so iconic. Makeup, hair, and that gorgeous dress, flowing in the wind. It’s the perfect counterpoint to her incredible vocals.
I agree. I love that voluminous skirt.
Annie’s theatrical costumes are part of her essence, watch her videos from the 80’s, she is an amazing singer and an incredible genuine person
Life without Bowie is getting pretty hard.
Freddie Mercury and David Bowie will always be in our lives, because of the legacy they left for us to enjoy till the last record breaks. No need to despair my friend.
Bowie is in space now, its ok. He is where he needs to be.
Right. There's no other like him.

That moment David Bowie opened his eyes when he sang "this is ourselves" and the moment the camera zoomed in to emphasis that moment was just amazing!
Me too! What a magical twosome
I agree with you 100%
...and Bowie graciously acknowledged it in spades.
Oh Ya she outshined him but not in a positive way
Not a bowie fan but i miss him
I'm still not ready for David Bowie to be gone. It still hurts.
@@jakejake5613 yes, in 2016...
He and Freddie. Unbearable absences.
Honey, artists always stay alive.

Deacy used to enjoy his song a lot and dancing while playing. So sad to look his face down 4:09 breaks my heart 😢 understand why he retired after Freddie passed.. all miss him too 💕💖
He left the scenario crying, having a crisis... he beared the situation as much as his poor heart could.
This is the REAL DEAL! One the the most incredible and authentic performances I’ve ever seen. To say Annie Lennox was “all in” is an understatement, especially at the end.
So glad that this was recorded to be enjoyed forever.
i saw Eurythmics in Houston in the late 80s. Calling Annie Lennox the real deal is an understatement. Best live show I have ever seen, and Lennox clearly enjoyed sharing the stage with her musicians. Just a total class act.
@@Xoebe I was lucky to have seen Eurythmics perform as well (several times) and was always struck by her stage presence.
Annie is a national treasure and should be recognised as such. (From a teenager in the 80’s and fellow Scot)
I saw Annie Lenox and Sting in San Antonio, TX ... marvelous performances and they sung a few songs together!!
I keep coming back to this magical performance and every time it brings tears to my eyes and chills me to the bone. There's nothing like it.
Stepping into Freddies role can't be easy, even for someone as talented as Annie Lennox, but she nailed the performance. David Bowie of course is/was one of the greatest voices of our time, and to see both on the same stage killing it, is amazing.
You should check out The Used version. It was really good too.
Annie Lennox is a force of nature.
Can't believe Freddie and now Bowie are BOTH gone.
What they created in the past remains in the present and always will, like them.
yes she is
But remember that they can sing this anthem together now
no one's really gone
Everyone, form a shield around Annie, nothing gets through!
Without a doubt Freddy Mercury is one of the greatest male vocalist of all time
And so was Bowie, if not bigger!!

I just wish he could have been here.

I've watched this vid a hundred times. Darn near tears every time for the mastery. Annie a gem (naturally); who other than David can rock a lime-green suit?

Right now, today, I'd give both my left and right nuts to be able to go back in time and see Freddy and the guys perform this song live in concert in this stadium, and or see Annie and David perform this song live in this stadium... Sadly I was too busy working trying to make the ends meet back, and pay the bills, and keep the lights on in those days, and concerts were not on the bills list, let alone a major, top tier, uber expensive concert across the pond from the states... Sadly I missed all of the greats way back in the day when I was listening to them, and trying to survive and do what's best for my family and myself.. But thanks to yt and those channels who have preserved the greats I get to look back and enjoy them 3rd hand many decades later...
Why can't we give love one more chance?
That we should care for each other, I suppose.
it means as you go through life and experience love with someone, you feel it will last forever, but then you lose it ,that is guaranteed. Each time you fall in love it becomes less and less significant because so much ofwhatyou had to give is gone each time you try....
after a few relationships of this the well is dry, hence the question.
