Due to the worldwide Covid outbreak and the closing of borders that followed, we couldn't sail Pelagic Australis back to Cape Town in April 2020 as planned. We were stranded in Stanley in the Falkland Islands. Only when South Africa opened its borders again did we depart Stanley in mid July 2020, heading North first to avoid the worst of the weather before turning East and heading for Cape Town. Crossing the South Atlantic Ocean we encountered strong winds - many times well over 40 knots - but also calms in-between the lows.
Our previous films focus on the landscape & wildlife. This film takes you behind the scenes. So less a factual journey but more of a personal one. Sit back with a cup of tea and enjoy 20 minutes on the ocean with us.

You two are a breath of fresh air, no clapped out multi-year re-build projects ( like the one in my garden! ), no clickbait titles, just quiet competence in a properly prepared boat. Inspirational, thanks for taking the time and effort to document your very interesting lives.
Thank you for your nice comment! We do have half a dozen films now lined up. I hope you enjoy these also:)
Sophie 🙂
Every winter, here in Cape Town, we track the storms approaching us all the way from S America! When they eventually hit they are often immensely powerful and invigorating, stirring up our shores and shifting sandscapes overnight. And here you brave sailors are rollercoasting into town like an ocean Tarzan swinging forth from one weather front to the next! Loved every minute of this😊
Hi Anna- that’s a beautiful, raw description you have written about the stormy shores off CT! Thank you :)) 🙂
Beautiful video. Thank you for sharing your trip through a part of the world that 99.9% of us won't ever see.
IKR? I watch these videos and think of the skill and experience it takes to be able to take a sailing boat so far out from land in weather like this and still feel comfortable and confident. It truly is a special experience that is limited to the few adventurers who can sail the open ocean with confidence. At my age, the best I can hope for is to be a crew member on a journey like this and to learn. Much respect to these adventurous souls! You are living the life I dream of.
Finally!! Sailing with true sailors. A sailing channel with people that are sailing. How refreshing!! Well done. Congrats
Thank you! :)
A beautiful, smart, couple battling the elements. Proper living.
Thank you, that’s really kind of you to say 🙂 Sophie
I've just discovered you guys. Remarkable to find sailors sailing that area. I would love to know more about you guys, your boat, your story etc.
Hi Adam, thanks for the feedback. We will add some more info to the account soon :)
Same here. Never seen anyone post from that far south and in winter!
Snap I only have just discovered it aswell
I just discovered this channel too. Goodbye Falklands. Next stop Cape Town! What a sail. Looking forward to what happens next. Cheers,
Me too.. Just discovered. ✌️
Those are huge seas that not many amateurs would attempt and for good reason. Hats off to you both.
This is by far the most real sailing channel on UA-cam!
Thank you! :)
Skip Novak boat + Dave Ullman sails = high latitude sailing with comfort and confidence, even in winter. Very impressive!
A beautiful film. Wish I had your calm ability at sea. Been down there several times with the navy, once experienced never forgotten.
Sailors on the internet kneel in praise! This was just fantastic to watch. Thanks so much indeed. Bravo!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! :)
I know so little about sailing. I do know brave hearts and inspiring stories, this is both. Great stuff. More please.
Will do! :)
wow, this is serious sailing on a serious ship! hope to see more of this and i'm also looking forward to see the ner pelagic 77 in action. thumbs up!
Thank you! :)
“You’ll be the navigata!” Loved that.
I recently found your channel, and what a treat it is! The best one that I’ve found, sailing and no music, only the wind and the water and the conversation. Safe travels to you both.
This is what a sailing channel is all about, actually sailing. Enjoy every hair raising minute. And nice mapping work using the Sextant.
But now is actually Summer in the south Hemisphäre not Winter. So mit can not be an actually journy....?!
Hi Hannes, we left the Falklands in mid July and arrived in Cape Town 3 weeks later in August. It just took as a while to cut and edit the video :)
Understand
Best Regards, Saludos, Grüsse

@KBro05 *_ You said " This is what a sailing channel is all about, actually sailing" True, but have you ever watched Erik from Norway (No Bullshit Just Sailing) which is perhaps a bit more exciting due to his videographic experience.... Go watch and be at the EDGE OF YOUR SEAT!! _* ua-cam.com/video/QF6FjOe5TsU/v-deo.html
The Best So Far, Sophie & Chris Send Out More, First Class Sailing My Wife & I loved It!!! Been To The Falklands And Know How Big the Sea Can Get .. Stay Safe
Ahhh!!! This takes me back to sailing on Alaska Eagle from New Zealand to Tahiti . Great video of two people working together harmoniously....so important when you are in each others pockets, so to speak for weeks on end.
I just loved the almost child like excitement you showed when seeing the wanderer... Please dont change and please keep that love of the natural world that you have shown throughout your voyages...
Thank you for these wonderful videos...
outstanding! nothing other than being impressed! wow!
I have watched many sailing and cruising couples adventures over the last two years and I think you guys are my favorite. Great quality video, great interactions and great content. I watched the entire video with enjoyment.
Thank you very much! That is very kind of you! :)

YouTibers
Thank you for your supportive comment,
Sophie 🙂
Proper sailing and no bikinis in sight. Love it.
Agreed, just discovered the channel. Wonderful. Keep up the sailing and hide the bikinis.
lol ... I thought no no no this is not sailing ... how did I end up here ... no bikinis or other kind of posing in the thumbnails and no crazy title for the videos ... I love this ...
Well, It's good to see an actual sailing channel. Real conditions, terrible weather, celestial navigation and paper charts. THANKS FOR SHARING.
You should watch Erik's channel ... ua-cam.com/video/QF6FjOe5TsU/v-deo.html
Thank you :)) we have 5 more films lined up to be edited which I hope you will enjoy. Sailing to south of the Antarctic convergence zone again and recently , a passage across the North Atlantic which I have just yesterday finished skippering whilst Chris has made his way back to Germany for a short rest! We really appreciate your kind comment and hope the other films are enjoyable too 🙂 Sophie
And indeed, what sailors y'all are!!! Much respect. Your adventures make my 16 degree north winter crossing look like a day sail. thanks
Oh I think any crossing is an adventure 🙂 well done for taking an ocean crossing on!
Thanks for taking us along, very interesting, look fwd to the next one
Thank you :) we have 4 more lined up to be edited :))
Amazing trip, great to see a sextant being used, your boat looks fab. sturdy and functional. Thanks for the great video. Mike
What a great team you 2 are. Very competent indeed. Pelagic Australis is in very good hands. Rock on you 2 stay safe.
You are both star's doing this sail.
Great episode thanks
Thank you - your message made us smile 🙂🙂
Excellent videos , you two are the real thing , proper sailors , hope to see many more .
Just like many others I just stumbled on this video and I really liked it! Not a sailor myself but I do love the sea and there was alot of that in this video. Looking forward to seeinf more. Safe travels and cheers from Sweden
Thank you for your comment all the way from Sweden! We do have 6/7 films on their way to be edited - we hope you enjoy these also,
Sophie 🙂
finally some real sailors definitely not your typical cruisers calm Waters and sunny beaches excellent job you guys Bravo
Definitely you all are a badass sailors, and your boat looks like a spaceship a boat for professionals with backup systems and all, and contrast with other sailboats we see here in UA-cam. I am looking forward to watch more of your videos. Cheers from Brazil.
Wow, thank you! :)
That was great, thank you for making such a great film!
All my respect for this project.
Respect, that's what I have to say, as an oceancrossing sailer not afraid of bad weather, I know this is something different. I don't care beiing played by lots of wind and high waves, but doiing that in the cold. Brrrr. But now I also know that there is a challence waiting for me. Go on, you two show us, sailers, that there is a lot more adventure outside.
"The person who says they are not afraid in a storm is either a liar or inhuman. You must never underestimate the power of Mother Nature - she will always throw up one last trick if you don’t have the most respect for her. You can never conquer her, but you can endure her." Sir Robin Knox-Johnston
Thanks for sharing this experience! Very fun to watch two experienced sailors on a well equipped boat take on some challenging conditions.
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
This is the best real sail oriented vid on the tube, I got to see some of what you saw and perhaps some of what Knox Johnston or Moitessier saw! nice work, nice boat Thank you
Thank you! That’s a super supportive message to write! We both work for Sir Robin Knox Johnston when not on Pelagic (and not since Covid!) for his Clipper Round the world race company (Chris skippered in the 2017/18 edition). Yes I agree with you, just imagine some of the things he and Montissier saw and dealt with. Both equally inspiring. Have you read Joshua slocums book? I have only just started but he’s another of them great explorers 🙂
Thank you again for your kind message 🌊
Love this channel, wish I had found it sooner.
Love the actual sailing.
Thank you! :)
Two lovely human beings.
You two are absolutely fearless, that was one hell of a trip and journey.
Look forward to the next instalment..Stay safe
Stephen Maturin would be jealous of your Albatross sightings
Your very brave people out there in the dark and the cold with all the mystery ahead of you etc Way to go, way to live. Thank you for having us along.
Thank you so much for your positive feedback! :)
Proper real, keep it up guys. Looking forward to the next adventure.

Wonderful!!! Please keep going! You guys are adorable! It’s awesome to see people sailing that know what birds they are looking at! Thank you!
Oh gosh that’s so kind of you to write and say that 🙂 we love the seabirds or any birds 😁 and lots of wildlife.
We have a film lined up for editing all about an Antarctic Minke whale 🐋:))
And another one about Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins & their chicks! I hope you enjoy them too 🙂
Sophie & Chris Ocean_ oh Woaw ! Can’t wait!!!
I read your article regarding this great voyage "I thought back to my 12-year-old self, when I went sailing on the sea for the first time. Having only sailed on the Norfolk Broads before, I’d looked to my coach, Paul Whiteman, for reassurance as he held the transom of my Mirror dinghy. I whispered to him: “I haven’t sailed one of these before.” His hands let go and in his steady manner he replied, “It’s just the same.” Fantastic stuff, well done you two need to be inducted into the International Sailing Hall Of fame.
Love the vid... Thank you for sharing! Nice big waves at the south!
Wow so impressed!!! True adventurers
Wow. What a heck of a 22 day journey that must have been. I look forward to more hopefully!
Yes, more to come! :)
Wow as an ex merchant seaman having been down in the southern ocean twice I know what heavy weather is so hats off to you 2 well done

Thank you for your supportive comment! And all the way from Australia!! We’ve got 4 more films lined up to be edited taking you to remote islands south of the Antarctic convergence zone 🙂 I hope you find them enjoyable when they come out 😊
All Power to the both of you. Much respect.
What a brilliant and insightful sailing channel. You make a terrific team and the quality of your videos is fantastic! Seeing South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and then Cape Town was a wonderful trip down memory lane. Also very fond memories of Tristan da Cuhna. I did my Ocean Navigation Certificate (celestial nav) on passage from the Falklands to Madeira so know what it’s like to be battered while taking star sights! Thank you again. Peter
great interaction sophie/chris 🤙👌
clarifications /talking from sophie thru all the moments is great 👍👌 keep it up💫👊👍
What a great pair of amazing sailors, some amazing conditions to be sailing in, love the commentary and peaceful nature of the filming. Great footage ☺️ keep it up

i just started watching you. love this. Cheers from the Brit in California. x
awesome video. I personally loved the rawness of the ocean and the candid videography ... good on you and thanks.
Absolutely incredible journey. Quality.
OUTSTANDING sailing video. What an amazing challenge you gave given yourselves.
I can't wait for more.
Thank you! We have a few more videos to come :)
Impressive sailing, journey and video Sophie and Chris. Real sailing! its so good to see what you have to do when your really in the elements. Been in 65 knots plus myself for 3 days and hard into the wind launching off waves. Have not sailed for near 7 years after 3 decades of full on racing and cruising so your bringing me back. Loved the comment from Chris when you asked him how strong was the wind on his watch " Force ten". Hard to film or smile in those conditions, but you did. And the sextant use/learning and calculating position your doing is so commendable. Look forward to your next video
I am so thrilled to watch this. Nikki Henderson recommended you, and now we get to see your adventures. Truly stunning.
Thank you! :)
Some serious sailing ! Well done: what a trip
Thank you! :)
A sailing channel with sailing on it!!! What a novel idea.
@Clint Thurman *_ True, but have you ever watched Erik from Norway (No Bullshit Just Sailing) which is perhaps a bit more exciting due to his videographic experience.... Go watch and be at the EDGE OF YOUR SEAT!! _* ua-cam.com/video/QF6FjOe5TsU/v-deo.html

Southern Hemisphere is summer just normal southern ocean in spring.

Very good to see professional sailing. I loved seeing the Albatrosses again.
Thank you :) where have you seen the Albatross ? They are so majestic 🙂🙂
@@seasandsummits Hi Sophie and Chris. I saw them on a passage across the Drake from Ushaia to the Peninsula on the bark Endeavour in 2010.
My mistake, the vessel was Europa that time. I sailed on the Australian bark Endeavour, Capt Cooke replica in 2002.
Love your natural delivery and love your beautiful vessel so suited to the passage. Will be following you both.
Thank you! :)
Brilliant video! Great to see a sailing channel using celestial navigation and venturing into these seas at such a time of year.
Welcome to Cape Town from a local! :)
Thank you! :)
Really enjoyed this video in that it focused on the sailing and the passage making.. I'm hoping there are lots more to come.
More to come! :)
Spectacular...raw & amazing...surely it will be on top sailing ⛵️ channel in near future!

.Amazing to watch..
Sophie&Chris, have been watching/following various avid sailors (solo & couples), me being one for decades, and I must say I adore the way you two talk to each other! Have subscribed in order to be updated with your amazing adventures. All the very best to you!
