After three years of sailing classes, and sailing, this is by far the simplest and best explanation of rigging I've ever seen. Looking forward to exploring your other presentations. Thanks!
Never sailed on a yacht and I get seasick in light conditions. But since the Corona lockdowns started I do nothing but look at yachting channels on UA-cam and dream about single handling the Atlantic. Starting to learn how my imaginary boat works thank to this channel.
This is by far the best tutorial on sailboat rigging I have seen. Simple, yet masterful. Very well done! You’ve done a great service to the sailing community.
I worked in 3D Animation for several years. The amount of work involved in even such basic animation is quite intensive. Combined with a well scripted instruction these videos are invaluable to sailors and want-to-be sailors. THANK YOU for providing this. It would take years, BUT, have you thought of creating an interactive instructional game where student/players would create their boats, rig them, outfit them with various technology, (also register them in a tax free haven 😜),then be able to sail them globally in every weather condition imaginable? If this already exists, please someone tell me.
thank you for your great and positive comments, much appreciated... yes, it takes a while but gets easier with time and practice to learn the software and is satisfying to upload a finished project. The closest thing to what you have mentioned, is the E-Sail sailing simulator, which is actually quite good
Been rigging boats for decades. All Mainsail controls are on Starboard side and "red" colors. All lines forward of mast (Jib, Staysail, Spinnaker Pole) are "Blue" lines and are on Port side of the boat. All lines for sails in front of the boat (Spinnaker) are "Green" colored. I also use roller furling on all sails. Mainsail is Aft-Mast furling (I detest in-mast furling). Lines are run through clutches into the cockpit. I also use a split mainsheet system. 2 locations on the boom, down/out to Port and Starboard toerails near the shrouds, then run back along the toerails into the cockpit. No dangerous swinging, out-of-control boom ever. I also run jack lines along each side of the cabin top and then one down the center of the deck at the bow. Then I use very short tethers that allow work at the mast/boom and the toe rails but do not tangle around my feet or allow me to get off the boat over the side. Always roll up the sails going downwind if possible. Facing the wind to furl sails is terrible for the sails and puts huge loads on things.
Thanks for the great introduction, not only the terminology (which is quite handy for someone who only knows the terms in his native languge) but also the valuable details!

And I love how when a new line or sheet is introduced, the basic procedures and safety considerations for hauling and easing it are described along with the constraining relations it has to other rigging. For example, this video's explanation of what the boom vang/kicker does and how it works in conjunction with the topping lift and mainsheet is perhaps the first time I've felt like I really understand it: why it's needed over just the weight of the boom and mainsheet when sailing downwind to keep tension on the leach and prevent the boom from lifting (thereby changing the sail curvature and spilling the wind near the head). And also how it - when otherwise not noticeably impacting performance - affects other mainsail operations. Notably when, why, and in what order it needs to be eased or tensioned when hauling the main or setting reefs. These videos are wonderful. Thank you!

And that the order components are introduced builds out from the fundamental purpose for each component, its rigging, and interaction with previously introduced rigging. When learning in a sunfish, the instructor had us turtle the vessel... yes, it was harrowing but necessary. Everyone needs to remain calm and tread water
@@dabneyoffermein595 Very good lesson to remember when the water is over your head!
I have sailed for forty years, some of it single-handed, around the Med, and I still learned something! (Raising the topping lift before raising the main.) But the spinning boat in Part 1 made me seasick.
thanks for the feedback and comments... yeah, we made some mistakes in the early videos... a newer version has been released This video has been updated with enhanced graphics and improved sound, check it out: ua-cam.com/video/tRgWtPaCQQc/v-deo.html
Thanks for the way you are teaching; I have been looking for info to learn how to sail and it is perfect for me.
That's great to hear, thank you... hope your sailing plans fall into place
As an absolute newbie this is great. Thank you
much appreciated, third installment in around a week
Great, look forward to it
This rigging series is pure gold for a beginner like me. I have seen a bunch of videos before but I found nothing that made it clear as day. The combination of great explanation with the awesome graphics makes it quite easy to understand how things work. I have made a major progress today thanks to you. Cheers.
wow, such awesome comments thank you, and thanks for watching
Great videos! As a new sailor this is a great reference. Animations are very well done and the presentation is awesome. Thanks publishing these videos.
thanks for your great positive feedback, much appreciated
Superb visualisation and explanations.
amazing mate, thanks so much
Excellent graphics to explain. Much appreciated
thanks so much for watching and adding such positive feedback
Great stuff, glad I found your channel. You could make the wave action sound a little softer. The graphics are great, rotations could be slower which will make it smoother allowing the viewers brain to concentrate more on the material being taught. One of the best tutorial channels I have found thus far in my short time sailing and I have shared this as part of my own online Sailing Africa diary.
thanks for the input and compliments... the next videos were improved due to the suggestions, check them out, much appreciated
thank u for this ! lots of hard questions are being answered here, i`m a rookie and i will set my first sail alone soon, thank u for this info
you are very welcome... have a great sail and let us know how it goes
