Skip Novak did an OUTSTANDING job as a tour guide. His pride & enthusiasm adds so much to the video!
The love and understanding he has for this boat are evident. This was an incredible tour of an amazing yacht.
@@Secretlyanothername
Research vessel.
Yep!
Makes it so much more interesting
“That’s a double if you’re still in love” classic, this guy understands all aspects of life
We're proud to be the builders of this great yacht! Thanks for the nice video!
What a fantastic build! Congratulations and I hope you get more commissions like this!!
Terrific build from a 100k all oceans plus sailor
@@alexbracht6979 Thanks!
@@TheoSmith249 Thank you!
what is the approx price for a boat outfitted like this?
What a gorgeous sailboat -- bravo. Thanks for the tour!
I work on the yard that build this ship, my colleague and I did all the electrics and navigation equipment. It was my first project when I started working there last year.
It was an awesome experience, and I've learned so much during the building. It's really something special to see it in the water, all functional and ready to go!
Hey - what is the building yard? (name, location, etc.)
@@wattshumphrey8422 KM Yachts, Makkum, The Netherlands.
That's a fine boat! You must feel a bit like a proud father of a champion!
😁🇺🇸
@@d.cypher2920 You bet I am proud, it's really amazing to see how it came out. At every stage during the build, you see the ship taking more and more form, and finding all the equipment working properly after testing, gives such gratification for the work that has been put in. For as long as it sails, or as I live, I will always refer to it as 'my boat' :)
Congratulations, that's a great thing to put on your CV
When you've been sailing for a good while and you think you have a well laid out boat, then you see something like this and realise you have a lot of room for improvement hahaha. Very very enjoyable video. And even if you wouldn't know who Skip is you can tell he's the real deal from his high density moustache.
Moustache just like the late great NZ sailing legend Peter Blake, unfortunately taken from us too early by cowardly pirates in Brazil.
He too had a vessel similar to this ie all manual and built to go anywhere with abundant redundancy. One thing I remember was the rounded hull so if trapped in ice it couldnt be 'squeezed'.
@@richardmcgregor7664 Yes indeed..Artica then Seamaster then Tara! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tara_expedition
I think the Fountain of Youth must be in Antarctica because Skip looks almost exactly the same today as in the Whitbread vids from the 80s!
Having sailed all my life as an amateur and professional including single handed Atlantic crossing, I have never seen such a well planned sailing yacht. I'd give any thing to join her as crew or passenger. Congratulations to all of the team who have made this possible, may you all have great memories and adventures.
I think it's incredibly beautiful not especially in the looks but in how it's built
This guy is incredibly knowledgeable and I grew up in a family who built boats. Excellent video.
Well said, indeed. My exact thoughts as well.
😎🇺🇸
( *respect* to anyone capable enough to sail single handed across the Atlantic. Actually, any ocean for that matter. 😎🇺🇸)
@@timpeduiker4660 functionality is pure beauty
Is their a you tube channel following this yacht?
Skip is a Master Sailer. He's been in the Windiest, Coldest, Biggest Swells, most unforgiving Ocean environment for decades. The stories this man could tell about Cold, Wind, Ice, Rolling, Pitching...
*I'll take it!*
Caption Jack Sparrow, I'll take 2,their small,lol.
5:55 Love how the hand wrench is used for everything. I just love when engineers actually work in combination with the practical end user. You get brilliant engineering and features like that.
Whenever sea conditions are getting rough, virtual Skip Novak activates in my mind and giving me the instructions with his calm voice. Thank you sir, for all the knowledge and confidence you gave us.
Same here 😅
@@RicardoDinizPortugal me too
Thank you, well presented, just right on the details, no stupid music and a well done to the good captain too.
Skip Novak is The Man. Any youtube video with Novak is epic.
what a ship! Always good to hear what Skip Novak values in a boat, a lesson for us all
Agree, even down to the flush pad eyes and ratchetable straps to secure the dinghy, I can never understand why all boats over 30ft don't have them
How is that Skip is forever young?!
Enjoyed the tour, thanks Skip & co!
Sweet engineering. No frills, maximum function, finest materials, all modern technology.
I was going to say the same thing using almost the same words. Excellent Schooner, Great Comment!
Well said.
limited frills../ the best manual technology.. and I'd say globe traversing capability (3 months is rather understating, but reasonable)
"What more do you need". So true. The design and build is exceptional.
I never get tired to see this video! What a dream boat!!! Skip Novak is an inspiration!
One of the best sailing videos I have seen. Incredibly fun to watch a video where he who presents the video actually knows what he is talking about. Great video and a very impressive boat/Ship.
Ship
Yes , I loved every second of him!
Really liked the presenter!!!!
I wouldn't be surprised if he sat all day in the shipyard and personally supervised all the work
The pinnacle of Skip's Pelagic concept... Along with Tony Castro and K&M the dream team have created the most competent sailing vessel afloat... I would hope that the concepts and ideas trickle down to manufacturers building so called "Expedition boats"... 👌🏻
A different world of sailing. Having sailed a small traditional long keel yacht for years in the West of Scotland I am used to green water and roughing it. I take my wet cold hat off to you. Incidently I remember Tony Castro from his university days in Glasgow. I still have one of his paintings.
I finally got around to watching the whole video and it’s official, I have no idea how to sail and my ignorance gives me anxiety hahahaha
Brilliant yacht, brilliant bloke...I don't have the words to do it or him justice. This man is unbelievably knowledgeable, practical and down to earth with such an under stated delivery. He would inspire confidence in the eye of a storm. Love how 40 knots still gets described as a breeze.... Fantastic.
Steve Dashew would approve! What a capable vessel. I had a Tony Castro designed CS30 back in the '80's. So happy he is still at work in his craft. Cheers
Here I am real late at night scrolling through UA-cam, don’t know much about sailing, don’t know how I got here, but you can tell this skipper really loves his boat.
Lovely boat, clearly evolution of previous yachts and practical in all details! As a Dutchman, proud that this was build in Makkum, the Netherlands.
@Edgar Peet Omdat de Nederlandse mensen bouwen de beste boten van metaal 😃😃🇳🇱🇳🇱. Ik ben Amerikaanse en leerde dat wanneer bezocht ik Friesland..
where else would you build a Yacht like this !!!
I don`t know how many times I have watched this video, but every time I find something new!
She is an example of form follows function to the nth degree. Beautiful in the extreme!
And what an absolute dream team collaboration, Castro, Novak and KM!
Skip's sensibilities with sailing and boat design are what I strive for as a sailor. Great video! Thank you
Outstanding presentation...Skip Novak knows what he is talking about and the "Vinson of Antarctica" reflects that very well...
Amazing. I love this boat. Clearly designed by real sailors for real sailors.
Skip Novak!!!! Love this. Thank you so much
Practical with a capital P. Function first, form second. Love it!
That is a fantastic machine... Truly amazing and a testament to human ingenuity...
Even land lubbers should be impressed after watching this tour.
That has to be the most impressive engine room on a sailing vessel ever made.
Yeah, I noticed that too, never saw anything like that on a 77', especially Civilian.
I looked, but I didn't see the washing machine. Don't tell me.... ugh.
The thing is that most charter boats are designed to optimise the space for guests, so the designer makes the engine room as small as he can get away with. In this case the boat has been designed with other priorities, good access to all the essential mechanical and electrical systems has been moved right up the list.
@@pcb1962 Yea but those charter boats arent cruising in polar north and south regions. To go there you need a very different kind of boat, like the Vanson here. If you want space you can buy an Antarctic cruise ticket on a cruise ship
The narrator is excellent, explained everything very clearly for the layman.I bet he's a first class skipper.
I love the attention to detail and practicality! Extraordinary! Congratulations to Tony Castro, Skip Novak, and the builder. The only thing missing that I can think of is a backup generator.
There is no need for it, though. That's the point.
Impressive to say the least. This thing is like a spaceship of the sea. Cool.
Skip Novak is an absolute genius! The Vinson of Antarctica is a real masterpiece, because it has everything that is needed for survival, with human safety and comfort features in every area of the sailing vessel. There are many manually operated features and back up systems to the back up systems. I do believe that the anchor can be electrically operated and the steering is powered, but I bet that it has a manual back up rudder system.
I've been in the Drake passage. It is the roughest seas in the world
It does
@@scottslotterbeck3796 no it's just another bit of ocean.
@@christopherharris8403 I've never had problems climbing a staircase, never seen scores of people knocked to the floor, never had the crew come into my cabin to bolt a brass plate over my window to prevent water rushing in if it broke, never seen a window in my cabin under water, when it was 25 feet above sea level, never was talking to someone and in mid-word they upchucked all over the table.

Always find something new and useful when listening to Skip Novak , great design Tony Castro and KM
I had the honor of being on an expedition on a previous version of Skip's boat. This boat is a masterpiece of yacht building! Greetings from Russia!
Skip, I have seen you interviewed in the past. Love your devotion to sailing people to arctic destinations in some comfort and lots of safety. You've done a lot of things that I recognize as really good solutions. Thanks for the tour....amazing boat!
Better and more safely designed than most Navy boats I've been on!
I’m blown away! My remaining life would be spent on board.
I learned to sail in 1968 on the Muskoka lakes of Ontario Canada in a 14’ wooden “Moth”
I had just read “Gypsy Moth Circles the World”. And then it began……
Peace
Wow, capt. Novak really does a nice job on the tour.
Just met this guy, love him already. I hope to have the same sense of adventure he has when I'm his age.
Skip is super knowledgeable! Awesome yacht.
Freakin' love it. As someone that commonly short-hands a boat, I agree with the manual winches, interchangeable mainsails, and pre-rigged foresails.
Skip is an absolutely incredible sailor with so much knowledge. I learned more from this than any number of "courses" I've taken.
WOW! Love the mashup of work and play! Beautiful.
Spectacular. The amount of experience and knowledge that has gone into designing and building this is immeasurable.
What an amazing boat, and wonderfully thought out… and a great tour! Thanks Skip!
Great to see you again Elaine and kudos to Skip, Tony and all involved in her design and launch. __/))
...bit like the last guy who commented - sailed all my life - my first Sydney-Hobart was the infamous 1998 - so I've carried with me the need for safety and smart design ever since as Ive made single handed storm sailing (or as windy as it gets) my own little frontier of exploration . So to listen to Skip talk is like hearing GOD as few would truly understand the depth and quality of the information he is giving ... I have learnt to prepare for everything and for everything to happen at the same time ... don't make the first mistake as one just cascades into the next and so on ... its how people are hurt and boats lost ... and also that situations are just a product of time on the water - the more time you spend on the water - the higher the probability things will go wrong - so have plan A, B, C already rehearsed in your head ... blah blah ...I'm preaching
Skip - I think I get it why you venture into that insane place - its the adrenalin and risk - coupled with the meticulous planning and control .... its the adrenalin junky who also has the skill to manage his risk - well almost all of it - so don't go and die OK- you're a true legend mate
While some 'licensed captains' struggle to impress their YT viewers, this skipper is straight to the point. Kudos to the team.
The most beautiful boat I've ever seen. So well planned and thought it all out.
Perfect layout thanks to the flawless communication between between Designer & Captain Skip
This is one serious boat......a real boat, properly seaworthy , highly functional and most practical.
Well done to the designers and builders.
Great video, an excellent presentation.
This was so great. Such a wonderful insight into this world and how things really work. Thank you so much for sharing! Love from Canada.
Both Skip's and Elaine's videos are always pleasure to watch! :) but this one is my favorite! That yacht is simply perfect!
That's a perfectly thought out sailing vessel!! Built for an with a purpose.... What a knowledgeable Captain as well!Fair winds an following sea's ✌🏻💗😊❣️
What more do you need ! Functionality, quality design, maintenance purity . A dream for adventure minded people. A a great video, thank you from Canada .
Nothing better than to listen to a person who knows what he / she is talking about and Skip Novak certainly knows his stuff better than almost anyone.
Amazing layout, this man is a genius.
Looks like the ultimate expedition yacht to me!
An inspiring expedition sailboat.
amazing yacht! great reason to buy a lottery ticket:)
yeah, you even have to pick your lottery game right. Custom made by KM, carbon masts... not every lottery has the jackpot to cover that.
I've sailed on many pleasure craft - power and sail - but none have ever felt well laid out. This one does - it's a true working boat and it shows. I'm stunned at the engine room - it must be a dream to work in.
My only surprise was the halyards being on the mast. I would have expected them to be drawn into the cockpit, so no crew would ever have to be on deck when reefing. I did appreciate the surfeit of winches - it's good to have many and to be multi-purpose.
Wow. Very well thought out. Happy sailing
Wow, what a great designed and very functional vessel. As a sailor with over 35 years on the water and having sailed other Tony Castro designs, this is an awesome yacht. I love my CS36T but a boat like this would be the ultimate dream of any sailor!! Great video, thanks for sharing. I have seen other videos of this boat in action but the tour through was great!
Not a flat-screen TV anywhere. Quite different from a cruising boat. I love the utility of this boat. A lot of thought for heating, but I never heard him mention AC. I guess he doesn't need it where he goes.
I have lived and worked on a lot of boats and this one is a dream come true. Well done.
Truly fabulous. A genuine beauty. Bravo!
The saloon is gorgeous 🥺 also he knows how to cook for voyages, so much respect for that!
That’s an amazing boat. The care craftsmanship and thought that went into it probably make it for an expedition and safety and comfort
I have to say. There’s a lot of experience and practical wisdom in that boat. Of course it’s quite different from traditional cruising boats. I need to watch this a few times and take some details Into my plans...
Aluminum hull, for example?
@@constantineding8700 That's something which is out of my reach. Wood is good. :)
@@ArcticSeaCamel Haha. But why not use fiberglass?
@@constantineding8700 Fiberglass will be used to protect wood. Strip planked wood has been used for years and years. It's easy to work with, doesn't need full mold etc.
Check out SV Tapatya's channel. He's been doing wood epoxy boat for a few years now. :)
I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of this ship. Thanks!!
Nice. Thanks for the tour Skip.
Brilliant Design & execution, @Skip Novak
Thanks for the tour, Captain Novak!
The moment Skip Novak speaks you know this man is The Skipper, and knows what he doing, and don't even think of questioning him when he tells you to do something. Stunning vessel, so smartly laid out. I would love to spend a couple of months on board this vessel, and the higher the latitude and worse the weather, the more I'd enjoy it.
An incredibly capable and beautifully functional craft, what a beauty and thanks so much for the great walk-around and narration, super video folks!
Majorly knowledgable gent amazing tour
Amazing ship. Design perfection really. Thanks for the tour!!
Outstanding, and thanks for the crisp presentation: what a beast, indeed!
Great review Elaine. It is a beautiful yacht in my eyes, functional and so well thought out. Amazing. Andy UK

What a great yachtsman skip is. Class act and if you lose your rudder he has a spare one on his face....... win win

As the owner of a serious offshore alloy ketch I have massive boat envy, so much thought went into designing and building this vessel. Simply outstanding.
This was very interesting. Thanks for the informative video, the boat captain hit all the marks!
