    SPOILERS BELOW:
    Art winning in the end is very much not clear, that’s assumption in your end in in real tennis the move he made is 100% illegal. The point of that scene is not about who won or lost at all tho, it’s about the competition and bond between the two of them reigniting.

The end scene was so satisfying. All the buildup to that moment through foreshadowing and such from little moments from earlier in the film. I got a strong sense that something Patrick really lost was the feeling of playing a game with his best friend, and I think you see him smiling at the end because he finally got to play against Art where the only thing on Art's mind was beating Patrick. Like they could briefly go back to a moment where they were just competing against each other and had that "relationship" Tashi talks about in that first match of hers we see. They truly see each other, and I think the reason they embrace at the end is because at least some part of them recognizes that they had lost the closest person to them in the world and maybe they have a new basis to rebuild their relationship. I think Art and Patrick also realized in that moment that Tashi only ever drove a wedge between them, and that when you remove her from their connection to Tennis Art actually DOES have a competitive drive (he cares about winning after their duo match, Patrick was just glad he got to play with his friend) and Patrick is driven by a desire to connect with others through tennis. Theres small moments in scenes where you can see that the other tennis players seem to really like Patrick at their college, which is odd because he seems so unbearable in any other setting. That last engagement is also the only time they arent constantly looking over at Tashi, and its the moment that they are both at the top of their game. Idk, I'm curious to hear anyone's thoughts on this.

    Literally the sole reason for me to watch this movie was Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Not only do I love their scores but Trent's music as NIN changed my life but what excited me more was seeing appearences from his wife Mariqueen and they haven't been on a project together since the short lived How To Destroy Angels project. The soundtrack showed that Trent and Atticus aren't just ambient guys and can still do exciting music with vocals, it makes me so excited for future NIN albums.

    i also loved this movie!!! i want to make the point that it's so interesting to me that you call the relationship between art and patrick is platonic/brotherly love and see the nature of their relationship as a more ambiguous/subtle aspects. one of the most compelling/heartbreaking parts of the film to me is that patrick was very clearly in love with art since they were young. i think you can see it starting with how he reacts to tashi asking if they had hood up before. and when patrick pulled art's stool closer to him before he sits down was such a beautiful little detail that has been replaying in my brain nonstop. i thought that was a huge key to patrick's character throughout the film, especially when it comes to his motivation around his and tashi's relationship. and near the end when he asks art if he means anything to him outside of tennis. whenver two of them are alone, the presence of the third is always felt (and when theyre all together, tennis is in the room).

  • @MelbourneLife
    @MelbourneLife 2 місяці тому

    The challenger match which frames the film is an extended metaphor for the relationship between the three characters. The first set is won by Patrick who has the first relationship with Tashi. So the first set symbolises that relationship. The second set is won by Art who three years after Tashi's injury begins a relationship with her which ends in marriage. The third set symbolises the relationship between Art and Patrick, so it is no surprise when it ends with the two men happily embracing in the middle of the tennis court. We never learn who actually wins the match. The frenetic rally with which the film ends is the first point of a seven point tie breaker. When Art makes contact with the net at the end of that rally Patrick wins the point, but there are still six points to be played. We can assume that Art goes on to win the match either because he's good enough or because Patrick will throw the match as per his agreement with Tashi the night before.
    The great tragedy at the heart of the film is the breach in the relationship between Art and Patrick which lasts for twelve years. Tashi understands from the moment she first meets the boys that their relationship is more than simple friendship.We get the repetition of lines from Tashi like : "I'm not a home wrecker"; "So I was a home wrecker" etc. Or from the boys: Art "We don't live together." Patrick "It's an open relationship." hinting at a more profound bond. In the bedroom scene Tashi coaxes the boys into kissing each other, thereby confirming her suspicions.
    Despite the terrible things Tashi says to Patrick in the film it's like water off a duck's back. She has no power to hurt him. Only Art has the power to hurt Patrick. This happens first in the hospital scene and then again in the sauna scene. Why is this so? Because Patrick loves Art.
    So to the last ten minutes of the film. Each man has won a set and Art is leading six games to five in the third set. Patrick is serving in the last game of the set and the score is 30 all. If Patrick is going to throw the match this is the time to do it. Accordingly he serves two balls into the net and the score goes to 30 - 40: match point to Art. Patrick's next serve goes out. If the following serve is also a fault Art wins the match and Patrick has honoured his agreement with Tashi. It's at this point that Patrick has a crisis of conscience. The object of this exercise is to lift Art's confidence for the forthcoming U.S. open. Patrick is asking himself: How is it going to help Art's confidence to meekly surrender the match to him? He finally decides that a more effective way of achieving Tashi's object is to provoke Art into lifting game. He reveals to Art in a manner only understood by them that he had sex with Tashi the night before. This seems to backfire when Art meekly surrenders the game and the score goes six games all, meaning the match has to be decided by a seven point tie breaker. Art serves first in the tie breaker and by this time Patrick's provocation has worked. Art is furious and his first serve is aimed directly at Patrick's head. We see a silent scream of anger on Art's face. Before Art serves his next ball he seems to be trying to understand why Patrick would be so cruel to him: Does he really hate me that much? And then the penny drops. Perhaps he remembers Patrick's willingness to surrender the Junior U.S. open title to him.back in 2006. It dawns on him that Patrick isn't motivated by hate but by love. At this point a smile slowly spreads across Art's face. Patrick returns the smile: Ah. You've got it. By the time Art serves the second ball of the tie breaker he is no longer motivated by anger but by joy., What follows is that last frenetic rally in the film. The camera lingers on Art. It's his reactions that are important here. Art has a look of joy on his face. He has rediscovered the joy of tennis because he has the love of his friend back after twelve long years. When the film is viewed in this way the last embrace in the middle of the tennis court is enormously powerful.

    Mike is great but it was Zendaya and Josh whose personalities *brought it* to the screen.
    And as far as the homewrecker accusations go, Art was the ORIGINAL homewrecker when he caused the argument between Tashi & Patrick to break them up, leading to her injury. ;) The boys were still "friends" until Art decided to play dirty. ;)

    We don’t know who wins at the end. If what we are shown is just the first point of the tiebreak (which it looks like), the only thing we know is that Art loses it. If what we are shown is the full tiebreak, than Art loses the match because he invades the opponent’s side of the court. But to me it 100% looks like we only see the first point of the tiebreak and the match is left open ended because it’s not important who wins in the end.

    Spoilers:
    Art didn’t win because Patrick threw the game. It wasn’t a fair game. Patrick won because he had control over the outcome of the game. He manipulated Art through the entire match. But him then dropping the racket to catch Art at the end is where they flip that around, and they both become winners through rediscovering the joy of the game.

    • @jpeg204
      @jpeg204 8 місяців тому

      I don’t think that’s correct. If anything’s it’s heavily implied that Patrick decides to NOT throw the game, and instead give Art a fair fight. The movie ends before we see who truly wins, but the last round they show it’s obvious that they are both going as hard as they possibly can. Patrick revealing that he cheated with Tashi to Art is what ignites their competition in the game again, and allows them to truly give it their all and have a purpose and passion behind the game. That’s why are all seemingly happy at the end or at least have an emotional release, because they have regained passion and competition in the game, and also because it represents all of their relationships, Patrick isn’t holding back any more, he’s giving it to Art straight, and Art is able to keep up with him, and they are competing on that court as friends, like they used to. Tashi is happy because she sees that both of them have regained their passion and are giving it their all, which is what she always wanted from them and herself above all else.
