I love how even though Tashi’s clothes, accessories, and hairstyle became more expensive, more “successful”, it all kind of washed her out compared to the lush jewel tone t-shirts and casual clothes she used to wear. She was still gorgeous definitely, but with her lightened hair and lighter clothes she looked like her life was getting sapped from her the further she got from her “good f*cking tennis”. The accessories, adding on more and more felt like desperate attempts to overcompensate. She used to make fun of the privileged rich kids who didn’t treasure hard work, but now since she can’t even play tennis, she tries to make herself feel whole with the things she once scorned.
24:53 Tashi wears her daughter's handmade bracelet as if it were gold. That's so sweet, and it does fit with how loving she is to her in all their scenes. She may not have loved Art, but she did love their daughter.
I do not know if she loves them both or she doesn’t love either one of them. She likes Art but clearly in combination with Patric. Like they said fire and ice, you can not be satisfied with only one of them😂
@@medicc609 I think Tashi admires that Patrick will stand up to her (and is more like her), but Art is more devoted to her. So she gets different things from each of them.

Tashi gives Lily just a fraction of what she needs (attention, cuddles, she wears the bracelet, the kids gets toys and decorations for her hotel rooms, they actually stay in hotels because Lily likes it) just so that Lily doesn't get too far from her, but Tashi doesn't really take care of her. Tashi's mum is constantly with the kid even in the moments in which Tashi could be free to be with her daughter. We never see her once doing caretaking for her, being there emotionally, playing with her, eating with her, none of this. When Lily asks to watch a movie together Tashi tries to buy time and sends her off with the grandma. The grandma is there up to the point Lily goes to bed and she is back there in the morning. It doesn't look like selfless giving, to me it looks very much with the goal in mind that fostering their relationship serves Tashi's ego and not Lily. Same thing with Art. She doesn't give him all that he needs, she just focuses on tennis, coaching, motivating him, planning his career. When he asks for affection and intimacy she pulls back. He says "I love you" and she replies "I know". To me Tashi only gives people the things they need that could also benefit her, nothing more than that.
i love how tashi's blue after party dress is both pretty while also realistically being something you'd find at an affordable store in 2007, something a middle class girl would wear to a school dance
That blue dress for the 2006 adidas party really took me back to that period of time! Such a great choice. All of tashis looks were extremely well done- and very believable for her trajectory in the movie
Contemporary costuming gets overlooked a lot and this movie shows perfectly how you can use it to convey a story about privilege and the fashion is a clear example of quiet luxury.
One thing that popped to my mind in the scene where Tashi and Art are in the parking lot and kiss for the first time alone, she is wearing those incredibly high platforms that make her almost tower over Art. It feels like it stands for her being sort of out of his league and more dominant
I looove that the Cartier jewellery is introduced, it’s the TRINITY range. Also the TWO love bracelets, and then the one of her daughter… ugh! That’s just so clever! This movie is too good.
One thing I haven’t seen anyone mention yet is that the white shirt that Tashi wore when making out with Patrick in the wind storm is the same shirt she swapped with him during the fight at Stanford. So each time Tashi and Patrick sleep together while her and Art are together, one of them is wearing the other’s old shirt, maybe symbolizing the power dynamic. Tashi’s is just less overt.
@@gimmepuffsleeves It's definitely not Patrick's shirt. She changes into that shirt while she's still in the hotel with Art and their daughter. Zendaya got asked about the shared clothing in the movie and talks about how that white shirt she wears to go ask Patrick to lose the match for Art (and their marriage) is in fact Art's shirt. The "I Told Ya" shirt was originally Tashi's but then Patrick steals it. Patrick also wears the shirt Art originally wears to watch Tashi win her match against Anna Mueller to later when al three of them were in the hotel room later that night. YES. This movie is 5 stars - the time jumps don't bother me when we get intentional art like this. The costuming, the music, the character studies. This is my first favourite movie in a long while.
I find it interesting how instead of Tashi exchanging the necklaces she wears to more expensive rich necklaces, she holds on to the old ones and just stacks all the new "rich and successfull" necklaces ontop of her old cross, maybe to signify that she doesn't want to let go of who she was and used to be. Along with the watch, notice how the trinity necklace represents all three of them- gold for Tashi, Silver for Art (ice), and Rose gold for Patrick (fire)
The symbolism of the Cartier jewelry in particular is so significant imo. Absolutely agree with you about the Trinity set. Like, hmm the TRINITY pendant, you say? What could that POSSIBLY mean in this movie about the complex relationship between three people??? Lol Also, the Love bracelets feel very much like a set Art gifted to her, them having to screw on and off could definitely symbolize his controlling nature/insecurity in their relationship. He wants something that shows that she won’t ever leave him. Fascinating!
I feel like even the sauna scene shows themes in Patrick and Art. Like how Patrick doesn’t even really care about wearing the towel until Art tells him to, and when he DOES, he just throws it over his lap. Very consistent with his style. Art on the other hand wears the towel folded into his waist, almost by the book. The presence of nudity shouldn’t discount things to analyze
when i watched it the second time, i thought about her silver and gold jewelery for fire and ice! but i wasnt sure if that was a reach, now i know it was great detail!!!
17:56 her filled in necklace symbolizes that in this moment, Tashi feels “whole” aka she doesn’t feel like there’s a void in her and so it is easier for her to resist art and walk away from him since she doesn’t need him to fill void in her. In the scene when she goes to meet up with art in his car, her circle necklace now has a hole in it - meaning tashi now has a void in her that she needs to somehow fill and that’s by using Art to fill hole in her soul/heart/self esteem/etc. Zendaya mentioned how all of them struggle with filling the void within them and they do this by using each other in one way or another. When people are codependent, they feel like there is a void or hole in their heart and they are incapable of filling it themselves and thus need to use others (not even consciously aware they’re using someone else) in order to fill their void
another interesting thing to note is that patrick always has a rubber band as a shock absorber which emphasizes his messiness and nonchalance but art always has a proper absorber emphasizing the fact that he’s very put together
I think my favourite costuming detail in this film (though there's so much to love!!) is the fact that if you look at Patrick's Impatto top from the New Rochelle Challenger final, it's actually a sleeved top which the sleeves have been cut off of which is just the best detail because of course Patrick would do that instead of buying a different sleeveless top. Loved this video and your breakdown of all of the costumes! I absolutely loved this film and I thought the production design in general really played a part in my enjoyment so it's great seeing some love for the different aspects of it.
This got recommended to me while I was on a Mina Le binge! I knew the wardrobe in this movie meant SOMETHING but never had the fashion interest and knowledge to analyze it myself so this video is a blessing. Subbed
As a watch fanatic the choice of watches stuck out immediately for me. Still trying to figure out what watch Patrick is wearing but him wearing the same one throughout the film is a nice touch to show that he never matured.
[about art and patrick in the sauna scene] "I have nothing of importance to add here, since they're just in their towels. I just liked looking at them" BIG GIANT MOOD lmao 😭😭😂😂 no but really. this is a great analysis and I enjoyed watching this video. I've been obsessed with this film for a while now (and mike faist made me feel feelings I havent felt since I was like 14 or 15, but that's besides the point. and I won't elaborate lol). the costumes in this film are quite fascinating to look at, and throughout the film, I kept experiencing fashion envy at adult tashi's wardrobe (90% of it is the dress she wears for the actual challenger) and just resisting the urge and desire to rob her wardrobe and accessories 😭😭. I really liked how they played around with the "fire and ice" motif, and you've definitely pointed out details and interpretations I haven't noticed before, so thanks for that too.
When I watched the trailer the clothing pieces were ALL I was looking at. I just loved Tashi's style and how she wore her more colorful pieces when she was young, kind of symbolizing how life was more "colorful" and less serious, but when she gets older she wears more nude colors to show how life isn't as colorful and Un stressful as it use to be when she was young. The costume design in this movie was absolutely amazing.
Awesome video! Watched this movie twice already and was so struck by how fresh and sporty and clean and beautiful everything was. But was mostly thinking of the cinematography at the time so it was really wonderful to go in depth with how the costume design contributed to all that. Recently subscribed to your channel and thoroughly enjoyed this one as well! Very excited to see what you come up with next!
I really love the constant theme of connection and how often they are so intertwined with each other through - like you mentioned - the bits of jewelry, the borrowing of clothes and the parallel moments they share with each other. It's like another way to view their love story and have a more in-depth look on who they are and what their state of mind is at certain pivotal moments. This was such a cool video - I know the research must have been insane😫
I wish it had been more analysis heavy- especially in the middle. It felt like at a certain point you were just listing what they were wearing which is something I can clearly see myself. I wish you didn’t feel the need to address every single outfit but rather choose a few impactful moments that inform the whole. other than that, great video!
it's interesting how in closet before the match when art is looking at his younger self it at least for me can be interpreted as his passion to tennis got smaller compared to when he was younger in a way like the same colour was only on sleeves not fully on clothes (i hope it makes sense haha)
10/10!!!! I wish I could like this video twice! This was not only well researched and well presented but also well organized. I love how you concluded this with the theme of 3s with Tashi's jewellry!!!! Amazingly I know nothing about costume design but I clocked a lot of this subconciously without ever realizing. The gradual hair and stylistic changes over the years, the repeated actions with switched pairs (spitting out the gum) and how their personalities were reinforced through their clothes. I loved the movie and this made me love it even more!! Seriously well done!
Nice observations of all the easter eggs and details ! Some things to add: Patrick's outfits not only mismatch, they are also OLD. The top and bottom he wears in their final challengers match is likely from mid-late 2000s, Nike had a couple collections of plaid shorts then, as well at the time they were releasing a wider array of sleeveless tops besides just the iconic ones they made for Nadal. It was actually a miscalculation to dress Tashi in all white for the US Open as most labels save their all-white looks exclusively for Wimbledon. This made the film seem like they dont know the difference between the two slams. In fact, most labels design their flashiest looks for the US, because of the energy and attitude it captures being in NYC. Also, using the Wimbledon regulations to argue that tennis thrives on conformity, is a mistake -- Tennis looks have been wildly creative in the past 4+ decades (see Bjorn Borg, Agassi, Yannick Noah and more) and Wimbledon is solely one tournament of dozens, and the ONLY one that has regulations on that level. The racquets would likely be selected by the props department, not costuming. And you might already know this -- but Adidas Superstars are not tennis shoes, they are basketball shoes :)
The costume design for this movie is so believable for real life. I kept looking for each character's signature item and how people might start wearing them when Challengers got popular. Great video. Cheers. ✨
It's fascinating, I didn't realize until you went through every single outfit that Patrick is wearing blue in almost every scene except for the sauna scene. Since Art is ice and blue is representing that, I see it as a way of him never letting go of his attachment to Art, keeping Art with him at all times. And then in the sauna scene he doesn't need to be reminded of Art because he's there trying to rekindle their connection. He both doesn't need the reminder because Art is right there and he's baring his soul to Art essentially. I'm feel like I'm missing something though since blue shows up a lot in the movie. The opening shot is the field of blue of the tennis court. I think it may also symbolize something else. But I'm not sure what. If anyone has any ideas, please share!
okay thank you so much for this, i have spent so much time thinking about this movie, but the costuming is one aspect where i never feel knowledgeable enough to comment. you’re really just giving me more excuses to keep talking about this perfect movie and I am nothing if not grateful
I also thought it was interesting that her cross necklace isn’t visible when she leaves the hotel room to go to Patrick but is there when she gets back. Like the absence of the cross necklace symbolizes her acting in an unfaithful way
I was so hoping someone creative enough would make a video like this for Challengers, I'm not the only one obsessed with JA and Luca's attention to detail!!! I would love if you could maybe do a video on the set design for the film, I feel like it's just as fruitful. Specifically scenes like Tashi's dorm and then her and Art's hotel room, her vanity sets, etc. xxx
I’m OBSESSED with this video, thank you for getting into allll the details!!! I loved this film because every little detail shows how the characters grow and change over time. More analyses of contemporary costumes pls, I’m here for it 😊
Patrick is in love with Art and loved him more than even Tashi. But Art is in love with Tashi. Patrick’s love towards Art is in the details like Patrick wearing Art’s clothes but Art does not wear Patrick’s clothes. This is why I loved the movie so much.
This was honestly a really cool analysis, the first thing I noticed while watching the movie was how they used clothing to change the characters and to show their passage through time, huge congrats to the design team
I thought the 17:51 pendant symbolized the front she was trying to put up, a facade of fulfillment and a satisfaction of her life with art (hence a filled circle with no room for something to fit inside) as she tries to turn patrick the other way, but we quickly see her sporting an empty loop again as she begins to toy with the idea of letting patrick back in and this is consistent w the rest of the movie and how she’s not whole and needs both to be complete
6:23 finally someone appreciates JFK jr. His father was attractive but Junior himself was just out of this world GORGEOUS! I love their “old money” style and I wish more characters were Kennedy inspired!
I kinda figured the "I told ya" shirt was always Patricks, also because the Kennedy family is one of his clothing inspirations. Tashi wearing it first (on screen) just visually follows the theme of everyone wearing everyones clothes.
great video. really appreciate how thorough you were with every outfit. i wish you did a little more analysis into certain pieces but i guess we all have our ideas!! the jewelry analysis blew my mind!! such attention to detail.
very cool! loved all the info you put into this! i really enjoyed esp the clothes swapping in the movie, they were indicating so much with these items, and it was so subtle.

you pay so attention to detail. i thoroughly enjoyed this video because it opened my eyes to things i didn’t even catch while watching the film. definitely subscribed
If you enjoyed the use of costuming to establish timeline here, you should do an analysis of 'Two for the Road' with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney - told in a nonlinear narrative where her hair and dress are the only sure indication of where in the story you are.
I also love how they talk about how young Tashi is so good at tennis “you can already see the adidas deal” and when they are older Art is sponsored by Uniqlo which subtly tells you that Art never ended up being as good at tennis as Tashi was since he didn’t end up getting an adidas deal
This movie is so layered and addicting omg i loved the jewelerly analysis and how much these three were color coordinating (i only caught onto the obvious Stanford days scenes)? Thanks for this addition!
i also think it's ironic that patrick wears the "i told ya" shirt when seeing tashi in atlanta, when he's looking at her through the window and makes the comment on her engagement, sort of an "i told ya you shouldve stayed with me"
This is such a great analysis! Thank you for sharing. I would like to also point out how Patrick’s plaid tennis shorts have a parallel: in their college era when he signals to having slept with Tasha by serving like Art and then during the final challenger where he does the same serving move to indicate the same thing.
Maybe I had seen people talking about the color theory in this movie on Twitter or something but I finally got to watch it for the first time last week and I kept specifically noticing the striking colors on a character, when characters were wearing the same colors or inverted colors etc. and thinking about what Guadagnino & Anderson were trying to signal to us. Definitely some of the best costume design when it comes to storytelling.
17:06 & 19:10 the colors Patrick is wearing when trying to get the hotel room and the colors Art is wearing when he said he wants to retire are very similar. I wonder if this is supposed to symbolise that they are both going through difficult periods in their lives. Art's clothes are more muted though, perhaps reflecting his personality.
sucha good video!! brilliant analysis i can tell your so so passionate about this topic and it was amazing to follow / write down notes alongside it :) !!
how patrick is fire and art is ice and tashi has both aspects so that when together theyre kind of overpowered but fit perfectly, so when its just two out of the three it doesn't work as well: art and patrick complete each other but are not strong enough together, patrick and tashi are passionate but too intense, and tashi and art are powerful but have issues with control in this essay
As someone with a very amateur interest in fashion, I loved the costumes of this movie but apart from the I told ya shirt reappearing wasn’t sure why, so I’m glad you made this 😊
i seriously loved your input on this video, i watched the movie twice and i did not catch a couple of things. thats why i'm glad i watched your video and your insights!

I really liked how they played around with the "fire and ice" motif, and you've definitely pointed out details and interpretations I haven't noticed before, so thanks for that too.
thanks so much! 💖 i literally went out and bought some (non-cartier) gold bracelets and tenniscore tops lol
Did you also notice how tangled her necklaces were in different scenes???
Omg yes!
The filled hoop almost looks like a shield. Her defensiveness in that scene?
Oh yea for sure!
OMG Tashi wearing Art's shirt when she sleeps with Patrick oooooohhh!!
the three intertwined cartier hoops........ POETIC CINEMA
it's *chefs kiss* perfection
Awesome video! Watched this movie twice already and was so struck by how fresh and sporty and clean and beautiful everything was. But was mostly thinking of the cinematography at the time so it was really wonderful to go in depth with how the costume design contributed to all that. Recently subscribed to your channel and thoroughly enjoyed this one as well! Very excited to see what you come up with next!
the cinematography was so gorgeous too 😍 thanks so much!
This was such a cool video - I know the research must have been insane😫
i spent a whole night pausing the movie to stare at the details lol!
I love how the necklaces overlap to form an ankh. Heavy interchangeable symbolism.
I wish it had been more analysis heavy- especially in the middle. It felt like at a certain point you were just listing what they were wearing which is something I can clearly see myself. I wish you didn’t feel the need to address every single outfit but rather choose a few impactful moments that inform the whole. other than that, great video!
Fair point!
it's interesting how in closet before the match when art is looking at his younger self it at least for me can be interpreted as his passion to tennis got smaller compared to when he was younger in a way like the same colour was only on sleeves not fully on clothes (i hope it makes sense haha)
Seriously well done!
thank you so so much!
And you might already know this -- but Adidas Superstars are not tennis shoes, they are basketball shoes :)
thanks for typing out a detailed reply!
The costume design for this movie is so believable for real life. I kept looking for each character's signature item and how people might start wearing them when Challengers got popular. Great video. Cheers. ✨
This movie made me believe in cinema again. I’ve never seen such a sexy, genius movie like Challengers.
If anyone has any ideas, please share!
okay thank you so much for this, i have spent so much time thinking about this movie, but the costuming is one aspect where i never feel knowledgeable enough to comment. you’re really just giving me more excuses to keep talking about this perfect movie and I am nothing if not grateful
you're very welcome! i feel like i'm the one in the friend group who will not stop talking about this movie
I also thought it was interesting that her cross necklace isn’t visible when she leaves the hotel room to go to Patrick but is there when she gets back. Like the absence of the cross necklace symbolizes her acting in an unfaithful way
Omg yes!!!
I was so hoping someone creative enough would make a video like this for Challengers, I'm not the only one obsessed with JA and Luca's attention to detail!!! I would love if you could maybe do a video on the set design for the film, I feel like it's just as fruitful. Specifically scenes like Tashi's dorm and then her and Art's hotel room, her vanity sets, etc. xxx
omg the sets were so great too! i zoomed into her dorm bulletin board and it was filled with so many tiny details.
His father wasn’t bad for a president, but jfk jr was a certified hottie
great video, your focus not only on the clothes but also on jewelery is so impressive!
aspiring costume designer here! loved your analysis soo much. super insightful and i can’t wait to see your channel grow!
team throuple 🎾
Hell yea 🎾🎾🎾
As a fresh costume designer I'm so happy to find your channel!
I kinda figured the "I told ya" shirt was always Patricks, also because the Kennedy family is one of his clothing inspirations. Tashi wearing it first (on screen) just visually follows the theme of everyone wearing everyones clothes.
I like these types of videos about films, I’m also very happy to see the international support for Guadagnino.
he's truly an icon. can't wait to see his future work!
This just popped up on my feed and I love it! Anderson nailed Tashi's wardrobe and I love your attention to the details ❤
Great job. I too noticed the outfits were cute 🥰
great video. really appreciate how thorough you were with every outfit. i wish you did a little more analysis into certain pieces but i guess we all have our ideas!! the jewelry analysis blew my mind!! such attention to detail.
perfect analysis!!! there was so much with the costuming that make them all feel more connected during my watch throughs
very cool! loved all the info you put into this! i really enjoyed esp the clothes swapping in the movie, they were indicating so much with these items, and it was so subtle.
Wow! You did such an amazing job with this analysis. I hope you continue the series with different movies :)
ugh this so good. the costumes do SO much to tell you about where the characters are in their journey not just with themselves but each other. loved this video. new subscriber for sure 👍🏻
Costume design is so fun for that reason! Thank you 🥰
The chothing choices are so lit just like in CMBYN
this was a VERY well done piece on the costumes. I definitely learned a lot and saw things I didn't see before!
I am mesmerized by your video. This is THE analysis! Thank you so much for doing that. I don't know if costume analysis is your primary content, but you have a new follower eager to see more contents like this. Your analysis is accurate and detailed. I loved it. 😅❤
This video is amazing! You've done such a great job! You've opened the doors to a world I didn't know about but I'm definitely going to keep my eye on
👀🙌
you pay so attention to detail. i thoroughly enjoyed this video because it opened my eyes to things i didn’t even catch while watching the film. definitely subscribed
this was incredible, i usually don’t notice much of wardrobe during a first watch, but this just blew my mind, bravo
If you enjoyed the use of costuming to establish timeline here, you should do an analysis of 'Two for the Road' with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney - told in a nonlinear narrative where her hair and dress are the only sure indication of where in the story you are.
it has been on the watchlist but you're convincing me to watch it asap!
I feel like the grid patterns might symbolise competition, since the net is a grid.
It's wild that the white shirt at the end fit both of them in the shoulders so well!!
You dropped this video like I haven’t been thinking about their clothes non stopppppp 😭😭🥰🥰🥰
I also love how they talk about how young Tashi is so good at tennis “you can already see the adidas deal” and when they are older Art is sponsored by Uniqlo which subtly tells you that Art never ended up being as good at tennis as Tashi was since he didn’t end up getting an adidas deal
Amazing!! I so appreciate the amount of research you put into this...now I have to rewatch Challengers!
The research was easy since it meant watching the movie a zillion times 😆
This movie is so layered and addicting omg i loved the jewelerly analysis and how much these three were color coordinating (i only caught onto the obvious Stanford days scenes)? Thanks for this addition!
i also think it's ironic that patrick wears the "i told ya" shirt when seeing tashi in atlanta, when he's looking at her through the window and makes the comment on her engagement, sort of an "i told ya you shouldve stayed with me"
Damn this is awesome, I've seen Challengers twice and I didn't pick up on ANY of the clothing details. Adds so much to the story!
This is such a great analysis! Thank you for sharing. I would like to also point out how Patrick’s plaid tennis shorts have a parallel: in their college era when he signals to having slept with Tasha by serving like Art and then during the final challenger where he does the same serving move to indicate the same thing.
I am obsessed with Art's Uniqlo polo shirt and am sad that it's a unique collaboration so I can't buy one in my size. LOL
they should've released a challengers x uniqlo collab right after the movie!
You have driven me back, great subject.
First time i see a video about modern costuming and I loved it!!!!
sucha good video!! brilliant analysis i can tell your so so passionate about this topic and it was amazing to follow / write down notes alongside it :) !!
thank you so much!
how patrick is fire and art is ice and tashi has both aspects so that when together theyre kind of overpowered but fit perfectly, so when its just two out of the three it doesn't work as well: art and patrick complete each other but are not strong enough together, patrick and tashi are passionate but too intense, and tashi and art are powerful but have issues with control in this essay
i was thinking about the costuming throughout my first watch and am so happy to have stumbled across this video!!! amazing work
I adore the detail and editing, this is fascinating. So happy i discovered your channel! Keep it up, cant wait for more fashion analysis✨
As someone with a very amateur interest in fashion, I loved the costumes of this movie but apart from the I told ya shirt reappearing wasn’t sure why, so I’m glad you made this 😊
This was amazing!! Great video
i seriously loved your input on this video, i watched the movie twice and i did not catch a couple of things. thats why i'm glad i watched your video and your insights!
Thank you for watching!
This video is sooo amazing im obsessed
thank you!
4 months, and I've only just realized that the shirt Patrick is wearing in the hotel scene is the same one Art was wearing earlier that day.
I just recently watched challengers a week ago, and it’s true it hasn’t stopped playing in my head
NO BRO THAT WIG IS CRIMINALLLLLL
ty u made me more obsessed w this film now
This is so good
gorl, the purple glasses: red + blue = purple.
I actually had no interest in this movie, but after your thorough research and breakdown of the costume design, I am going to give it a watch! I love the thought behind costume design and think it can add so much to the overall theme(s). Thanks for the great video!
this made me so happy!
Girl i loved this video so much. For sure I'll watch some others of yours!!!
Thank you! 😭 I'm working on a couple of videos right now
Incredible video!!
that was impressive, thanks
i'm proud of this one, thank you!
Im into directing so watching the movie i was more on the camera techniques and all, but what you explained is soooo interesting too!
