...i saw Jaco playing with Weather Report many times when they visited the UK -what an amazing musician, but I also saw him after he left the band trying to talk his way into a gig, a situation that could have turned ugly when he realised he wasn't getting anywhere, luckily on that occasion someone behind the security line recognised him and they let him in...a few years later I was in an internet chat room with people discussing the whole 'jazz-fusion' era when the conversation turned to Jaco, many 'disappointing' views were expressed -he certainly was a controversial figure, usual, things you hear 'he was a junky' - 'his ego was over the top' etc but in that chat room one of his daughters spoke about him, with the sadness you would expect but she also spoke about him being undiagnosed bi-polar, something she also suffered with, and how he didn't get any support, who knows if he had a been a little better managed how much more he might have done...RIP JP - i miss your playing...
Yeah, my wife was working on a film shoot in NYC mid 1980s. They were doing a night shoot west village warehouse loft area, when some nut in a bath robe, crack piped out of his mind, walks right on the set yelling and screaming. The NYPD guys working the film shoot, grabbed him, and moved him away. It was Jaco. Sad. He was dead not too long after that. A Shame. I saw Weather Report seven times. Four of them with Jaco.
@@smitskee ...as i said above, if his b-polar had been treated maybe the end would have been different...don't get me wrong i'm not dissin' what you say re 'crack-piped out of his mind' it's just that I've never heard any comment from those who worked with him regarding drugs, but as i said i had a long chatroom conversation with his daughter and on another occasion with his first wife who stated that he was bi-polar ( manic-depressive ), thankfully we have the health-care system here in the UK that takes care of people and not let them deteriorate until tragedy results...best Steve
Jaco was such an inspiration to so many. He will always be the greatest musician who has ever lived. I have been a fan of him since I was young. He was so much than just a musician, Jaco was a gift from God and there will never be another like him. Even The Beatles couldn’t hold a candle to him because Jaco was like the human embodiment of a God and they were just people that claimed they were bigger than Jesus. It’s amazing to be named after him. When I listen to his music, I feel more confident about myself and think more about the best to come.
That was more a remark like: Beatles are bigger than Christ in the way that more people go to concerts than go to church. I don't think John really meant they were bigger or better, it was an observation. The backlash was huge and so the regrets.
RIP Jaco. Y'all might be missing th'point about the body-paint. Wayne Cochran used to do super crazy theatrics like this in his shows. JP's (artfully) carrying on a great ShoBiz tradition. Most Sublime, Eye and Ear Candy.

don't know if this is true, but i read or heard somewhere that near the end of his way too short career, that he was scheduled to play and he was playing all right; playing outside on the mud. kept the band and the audience waiting until he was finished and ready to perform. this looks like it may have been the incident in question. it was during the time of the beginning of his decline.
You could really hear the difference between the 1982 and 1984 Japan concerts. The '82 concerts were much tighter, more in-control. Great to see Mark Egan up there with Jaco though. Sadly, I have a feeling that Egan was there to ensure that the bass line remained in case Jaco went too far off the changes. Jaco was very unpredictable by 1984. This was the same year that Jaco got booed off the stage at the Playboy Jazz Festival.
At 3:12 gil is playing a very unfortunate "F" - which wasn't going through the changes well at all. It appears that the sound guy knew this and killed the sound from the e.p. at that moment.
That's not the bass of doom (1962 jazz). If I remember correctly this is a 63 or 64 Jazz and this one he threw it into the Hiroshima Bay after this performance.
Body paint because he was extremely ill at this time. Yes, he could still pull it together performance-wise for the most part, but this is a serious indicator of the level of his disfunctionality. Sad.
A friend told me that Jaco had diarrhea that day, he went to the restroom but there was no toilet paper 🧻 so he was in fury and starts to paint all the walls with shht, he did this with all his body as well. Musicians were in pain specially the horns.
Nonsense. Every human being alive, apart from a few perverts, has a natural aversion to faeces. Nobody would have gone near him on that stage. They probably wouldn't have let him on, and either cancelled the gig or found a quick replacement for him..
