His music has such a haunting element to it. Sometimes I listen to his stuff and I get a lump in my throat and my eyes water up because it’s so beautiful.
He doesn't only play bass, he plays over space, time and emotion. With all their far away technical skills, modern jazz harmony usage. I don't know many bassist that can provide this intensity.
I stumbled upon this video today and my head was spinning after. The maestro himself threw every conceivable bass technique in this composition from a higher plain and thank Christ no slapping.Double stops, octaves, natural harmonics, false harmonics and pinch harmonics all with perfect intonation on a fretless bass while walking around amongst the audience.Music fans only had Jaco for a brief moment in history but he gave us more in that short period to last a lifetime of pleasure and inspiration.
There's something really haunting about how he sings to continuum. He sings and plays directly from his soul. Sometimes I have a hard time watching this because it feels so "intimate"
he was coked out the wazoo tho lol... look at his jaw flailing around.. I had the exact same jaw movements on the powder and later on E. Stimulants just cause the jaw to move out of control, that why we would all chew straws lol
raramente si sente così tanta grazia e talento in un musicista,io che ho avuto il piacere e l'onore di parlarci posso dirvi che jaco era anche una gran persona . tutti noi bassisti dovremmo solo ringraziarlo
Jaco is the greatest bassist of all time. I mean, COME ON...LISTEN TO HIM! He's also walking around the audience while playing! Nobody does that! He's the rebel revolutionary of creative playing. One for the ages.
I saw him live in '81 and '84, amazing shows. This has to be the best live Jaco recording I've ever seen. Continuum is without a doubt the best bass song ever conceived. Just a beautiful song, and so nice that it comes from one bass.
I have to breathe very slowly while watching this... The best music is the one that makes me feel like I'm somewhere else. And this is somehow out of space and time.
Thank you Garry Trudeau for the link here from Doonesbury today. The Berlin Jazz Festival site archive lists this performance as a SOLO by Jaco, on November 2, 1979. This was recorded months after Jaco's performance on Joni Mitchell's album Mingus. I can recognize many musical references here to his work on "God Must Be a Boogie Man."
this has definitely gotta be one of my all time favorite versions of continuum! and "lummond @massimoselvi"...i seriously thought it was a ridiculously long cord for this one too haha!
It seems like the orchestra section he was playing along to at the end must have been a pre-recorded track? it did not seem like there was an orchestra on stage, but then again everything is kind of shrouded in black...but as a musician experimenting with mixing live instruments with electronic stuff, it would be very interesting to know that Jaco was kind of doing something like that in 1979....
Sometimes Jaco solos start to sound like my digestive system after late taco bell . But I'm a rock & roll bassists. But man that live Jodi Mitchell concert he was playing in impressed the shit out of me. I would have loved to hear him do more stuff like that.
wireless systems in those days sucked unless it was top of the line. I dont hear any dropouts, interference, or CB radios. must have been top of the line
@jasont0815 he made a mistake. do NOT blame that bouncer, because he did NOT mean to kill him. I loved jaco, I LOVE jaco, but it was his fault as well.
Being a bit of a necromancer, but he’s not right here. It’s a mash up of a whole pile of his stuff, and he’s off his head. It’s a real shame that people see this stuff and call it his best. It’s not. And I am a Jaco fan. This is really horrible.
@@jeffwolinski2659 Jeff, he is clearly not with it. The music is disjointed and incoherent. It’s pieces of Continuum with random inserts of string slapping, and bits of vocals from Word of Mouth (John and Mary) interspersed with other random doodling where ever his head was taking him. It’s sad, the last gasp of one of the greatest musicians to visit the planet. That’s why it is horrible.
So he's quoting from various lines that he's played before, I bet most people in the audience enjoyed that. His decline was tragic and his untimely end even more so. That doesn't make this a horrible performance. To each his own. I'll treasure every Jaco video I can find, even when he isn't his best he is still Jaco and that is great.
His music has such a haunting element to it. Sometimes I listen to his stuff and I get a lump in my throat and my eyes water up because it’s so beautiful.
Me too.. it's overwhelming. What a generous musician he was!
Same

i don't think i've ever heard jaco described any better than this! :)

Brief but timeless. Nonetheless, so very many 'if onlys'... like if only he'd lived to compose for full orchestra!
I agree, but I'm wondering why its seems like you're against slapping?
Nick Valente
For the same reason many guitarists were against hammer ons after the 80’s.
This never gets old

I don't believe such beautiful sounds have ever emanated from this instrument before or since.
From all the Bass solos of Jaco that i ever heard on YuTube, i say that THIS one have something more than special....Thanks Jaco!!!
wow jaco was in so much pain. how do you help somone that powerfull. i miss him and wish he was still here to teach us

This is a great moment in musical history, Bass God himself circumventing the audience, everyone stepping out of time along with him.
I have to breathe very slowly while watching this... The best music is the one that makes me feel like I'm somewhere else. And this is somehow out of space and time.
Feels like an apparition gliding in spacetime vibing and creating glowing mellow ripples across the "continuum"
Rest in Peace Genius 🙏
The greatest bass player in the Universe, thank you Mr Pastorius 👌 love you & miss you Jaco ❤️
I don't believe in God, but Jaco was an angel sent from above to inspire musicians. Thanks for the clip. Made my day!
I'm sick of people comparing Jaco to God. Don't get me wrong....he's good, but he ain't no Jaco Pastorius :)
He IS god
lol
How's his Freebird?
best UA-cam comment of the century
Jaco was an alar boy. I don’t think he wants people comparing him to God. Just to reflect And be sincere.... if you diss the music you be tone deaf.
It's a solo gig at the Berliner Jazztage '79.
...but there is a relation with Joni because Jaco borrowed the wireless system for the bass from her :-)
Damn, He just gave those lucky attendees an EXPERIENCE.
GOD of BASS. R.I.P.
Def the best! He was sooooo far ahead of his time that he couldn't live very long.. We are very blessed to be able to hear this impresario!
The GOD of Bass. Jaco was Godsent. 4:54 ... 5:38 . . after 8:14 this music is in heaven

Misha Rosolak lol my thoughts exactly
that was amazing. thank you so much for posting. i've never seen this clip before a 9 minute plus version of continuum! just wow.

Jaco had it all, except peace of mind!
The only living bassist who is anywhere near Jacos convention-breaking creativity is a man named Gary Willis!
someone mind telling me what song he was playing at the very end. the instrumental
Mysterious Mountain, composer Alan Hovhaness
One person has haemorrhoids instead of ears...
Charles Hoernemann he has no feelings or he wants the video in HD...lol
Sofia Noiti Haha Sofia. You might be right ;-)
oscar franke sadly
wireless systems in those days sucked unless it was top of the line. I dont hear any dropouts, interference, or CB radios. must have been top of the line
Its very funny when a guy starts to sing the bass voice lol
Bocato that's jaco lol
Richard Bona?
@jasont0815 he made a mistake. do NOT blame that bouncer, because he did NOT mean to kill him. I loved jaco, I LOVE jaco, but it was his fault as well.
jaco was amazing but 4:13 🤣a percussive bassist he was not
That's a special technique he used for percussive effect.way cool.
This would not have been possible without drugs
Oh, shut the fuck up. You know NOTHING!
日本だな!正直静かに聞け!って日本人に言いたい笑笑
the ignorants should be flogged!!!
then don't watch it
