of all the videos that show how to do the timing belt, this one is the best. Sure it isn't sitting in the car, but it's by far the most helpful. Definitely helped me get the belt on and rotate the crankshaft to set the camshaft and HPFP. This is something that other instructions don't cover too well
So this is how to change the timing belt if your engine came without a car.
Yes 😁😁
😂😂
Always mount the belt counter clockwise for the best accuracy.
Then the adjustable pulleys should be moved maximum counter clockwise for the belt to fit perfectly. Finally when you mount the belt, move the pulleys clockwise, less than one tooth to engage the belt as good as possible. 👍🏻
Sorry for my english lol
As a mechanic i fount it perfectly understandable, never done an audi before but was going to treat the job as a twin cam belt change, VERY GLAD you showed about fuel pump and cam locks as had NO CLUE!
BIG THUMBS UP!!!
Thank you for the video from Spain!! It's exactly what I was looking for!! You should do more videos like this one!!
Thanks so much for this. I followed other youtube guides and just couldn't get it right. Engine would crank but not start. After listening to your description i found it very helpful especially the part about adjusting the cam sprocket if things were not aligning up. Thanks so much for this you saved my van!
You are a super instructor and mechanic. I wish I had a good mechanic like you where I live. Thanks alot!
This video is a big help even though my engine is the twin cam version! It is good to have a very clear picture of what the various pins, tensioners and adjustable sprockets are doing.
Great job! I wasn't able to purchase a belt tool before the job landed in my lap. I was still able to preform the job w/ 2 M6 bolts to pin the cams paint marked the crank. 🤞 Followed your steps and torque specs. Fired it up, purred like a kitten. It took 5 hours fun Saturday project.
thats a real engine
The last timing belt I changed was back in the day.Im now an ex mechanic since 1980, but it was on a ford escort Mexico twin cam. Quite an intricate task. We had no pins or special tools and relied totally on lining up timing marks on the engine casing . Never had a problem though, just needed a socket set and a few spanner’s.
That was way back when life was simple n straightforward
That approach doesn't work any more. If the timing of this engine is even slightly out, it doesn't start. You need the tools. Similarly with the Renault K4 engines. The good news is that they are incredibly cheap and work incredibly well.
@John Bladen, thanks for this insight . I have a friend whom timing belt is really really old, multiple missing teeth on the belt. I think it cause the engine timing to be off
i bet a handful of people tried this and half way through said holy shit what have i done
I just finished it and then started panicking when I turned the engine twice and realized the camshaft and the pump weren't aligned anymore to the crankshaft and couldn't insert the tools. Thanks to your video I realized I didn't lose the camshaft bolts so it probably turned a few mm when I tightened the belt. Awesome video
An important word of advice for those doing this job.
Once you set the tensioner correctly with the arrow in the gap and torque down the 15mm nut, do not be alarmed if it wanders either side of that original setting as you turn the crank. The VW Workshop manual doesn't explain this and it can cause some distress if you don't understand what is happening. If you look closely in the video, you will see the tensioner arrow likewise moves after it was set. I wasted much time trying to reset the tensioner only to have it move again when I turned the crank. For want of a better explanation, this seems completely normal and is the tensioner deflecting and adjusting with the forces of the valve train and compression stroke of the pistons.
Thank you

I think he mention that at 11:29-11:37 about it moving 5 mm right of the gap.
Good
Cam initial torque specs are 20nm and HPFP are 20nm. Forget to mention that and a couple other things but very helpful thank you!
Great video man, thanks for showing all so precisely!
I am not a mechanic, but I am very interested in technics so you got a *thumb up* from me.
:-)
Wanted to say thank you, this video cleared some of the doubts I had for doing my timing & pump.
Firstly, I've done 2 cars with these instructions, they are brilliant, anyway:
I've just worked out a tip for everyone who is or has struggled getting a water pump out with a high km VW. I was doing the timing belt on my wife's 300k km Amarok and I don't think the pump was done at the first belt change. The casting on the water pump that has a standard 6mm hole for mounting the centre lower timing belt cover bolt can be used as a jacking hole. Get a 6mm by 65 to 80mm long bolt, thread it into the hole on the water pump for the lower timing belt bolt. This long bolt will bottom out against the block. Carefully thread it in and it will break the seal by turning the pump slightly sideways. Don't over do it as you are only jacking one side, all you have to do it get it moving then wriggle it out. The pump I got out is 10000% harder than a Jetta I did with 150k km on it so my wife's was a worst case scenario.
Thanks for the video and clear instruction, has saved me plenty of money, some of which I will pass back to you.I agree with Scott Carlson (below) my timing was out yesterday a few degrees before starting the job no doubt due to worn-stretched belt, but replacing it with the Genuine VW belt, I did Not loosen Any of the adjusting bolts on the Cam pulley or High pressure Fuel pump pulley. After fitting the new belt and testing by rotating crankshaft, all timing marks were spot on, as per factory spec. And on the test drive yesterday, has given me more power.VW Crafter 35 2.0L Jumbo Van 2013. 127,000 ks
Salut, normalement il faut desserrer les boulons pour établir la tension sur la totalité de la courroiede la courroie
Very helpful just used this to do my own thanks.
Great Great job my friend! I am finally tackling this job tomorrow FGW!
Great video... On my 2012 vw passat camshaft sprocket was a little different but i followed the video and everything went smooth. Thanks
I used this video 2 years ago to do my Skoda engine which was out of the car at the time no problems since very good video
Thank you for your time. And very detail video!
There are no defective tools for the crankshaft TDC setting position. These are different tools completely for either the "oval" or "round" crank sprockets. Be sure to check whether timing mark on the sprocket is at the tip if the tooth or between the teeth.
Seems pretty easy. Going to try it on my lunch break.
Got it done! Thanks so much for this video, I was more than happy to contribute to your website! Couple things in retrospect though. ..I used Dieselgeek's "pro method" to remove the tensioner and stud. Very easy and no engine lift not worthwhile! I have a 2010 JSW with the CJAA, FYI. Removing the engine mounts and lifting the engine for me was overkill and too risky (especially with the car jacked up). Also, I broke the tabs on the return fuel line (so fragile) so I worked around them, which wasn't very hard at all. If you do remove the lines, I recommend removing the reservoir and using your fingers to squeeze them off. Picks will EASILY break the damn connectors (fragile was an understatement). You shouldn't remove them unless you plain want an excuse for buying a VCDS (like me!). Finally, what was the purpose of removing the plastic screws holding up the oil pan cover? Is that an inside joke because it was totally unnecessary and possibly a great joke(???). Thanks again!!! :)
I too recommend using Dieselgeek's method for removing the tensioner. The factory method takes longer and requires replacement of additional fasteners on the engine mount as well as the use of an engine support device. It also carries the risk of damaging the mount if it is not torqued correctly in the right sequence upon reinstallation. With some creative use of a double end box wrench and a triple square socket, you can still torque the tensioner to the correct specification - just make sure you adjust your torque wrench settings to factor in the extension.
Can somebody please assist iam in South Africa and can find a Turbo for Polo 1.4 TDI 3 cylinder
Did you get the tensioner to the middle?
After 38 years in the trade
I HATE GLOVES !!
Nice vid
Me too !!!
Ive seen fingers rip off of peoples hands because of a glove, gloves are scary bussiness
Be sure to put grease liberally on the water pump seal and slide it in by hand before tightening the bolts. The seal is easily rolled and cut when it is lubed only with coolant.
Great video , have to do it tomorrow on 2.0 l TDI Passat . You save my ass.
Nice seeing it being done out of the car. Can't imagine doing it in place, must be a royal PITA. Which is why I paid an Indy to do it on my JSW.
Thanks for the video it really helped on my son's 2011 Jetta CJAA!
Best timing belt replacement! Good work!
Thank you for putting up this video. Very nicely done to clearly see what needs doing and what tools are needed. And the follow up to this video would be how to do it with a minimum of special tools. For those who want to do that. Would be interested in a video link if one is already done.
best explaination so far. very well done :D
Video provides clear instructions! Thank you
Quality how to vid, answered a lot of my questions. Thanks
THE TITLE OF THIS VIDEO SHOULD BE, THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE A HOW TO DO IT VIDEO. VERY VERY GOOD THE BEST OF YOU TUBE THANK YOU
Thank you! Very useful tutorial! Much better so on engine if out of chassis to see how it works to understand it! Best Regards from Hungary
Great video explained very clearly. Thank you for sharing.
A lot of work for a timing belt change. Very good illustration. Thank you.
Nice video, I love working on these......
Awesome video...thankyou for taking the time, much appreciated
Thanks, excellent video with a good commentary
Thank you for making such a good video, very detailed and extremely useful!!
Just a quick question, is this the same on the CAGA engine? Thanks!
Cool very cool video and nice demo on this timing belt and roller install
Top tip: my tdi was starting on 2nd or 3rd attempt sometimes and had uneven idling and somewhat powerless in streetcorners. All this due to an old stretched timingbelt. All timing marks were still in place! Was wondering about the problem for 2 years and no mechanic knew what the problem was. 😐
I'm about to have this done on my 2000 Golf TDI (I'd never attempt it myself) and it's good to know what the tech will actually be doing to my car. Now I know what those tensioners and rollers are that showed up on the invoice last time they did this for me. 👍
Excellent tutorial on changing the timing belt. Thank you very much for posting!
Great video!! Thanks from Spain
excellent job thanks
Thank you so much for this video. I just couldn't afford the $1000 in labour I was quoted so this saved me
Thanks for showing.
These tools do cost money.
Considering the risks, doing this yourself might seem only be profitable for people that keep the same car for ages.
great video dude, best i've seen
SUPER VIDEO
Always amazed VW used those tiny diameter idler pulleys. They must spin at silly high rpm and it’s amazing the bearings last.
Great video. Recently had a problem with my water pump. Had the thermostat and cambelt done at the same time. The front end of the cart has to come off. A lot of labour.
traveling at 59 miles an hour, all traffic WAS passing me. I was using Cruise Control, at 59 mph. Upon coming to my exit, i switched off the cruise control. Upon applying the Service Brake pedal, the brake pedal, WENT TO THE Floor. I was traveling at 50 mph or so. NO BRAKES. Since i was in one of the left turning lanes, i QUICKLY was able to attempt, a right turn, so I swerved across TWO lanes, glad there was no cars there. My VW became AIRBOUND. The Left Front Wheel BUSTED off, at the Spindle
I like how they designed this, and I like this video.
Súper vídeo and great explanation just perfect
Perfect explanation, nor many go to explain all the nuisances thank you
this is one of the best tutorials !
True.
this is a nice video of a timingbelt replacement.but i do have a question , in some timingbelt kits are the studs for the tensioner and idler available , what is the tightening torque for these studs?thanks
Nice job!!!! One the best how to videos!!!!
merci pour ta video, elle est super. in France
Merci infiniment pour cette vedio bonne explication
First class instructional video many thanks
Good stuff! :-) Thanks for posting the vid.
2:33 The cam sprocket does not "rotate 2 times for every crank rotation". It's the other way round. The crankshaft rotates 2 times for every cam sprocket rotation.
great video!! tx for shering your knowleg!
uri
Very nice man you are a real mechanic.
Thanks for the video. Will be doing this on my Jetta tdi 😔🤙🏻
awesome....
it's should work on CBAB?
Hello there.
a very useful video.
do you have idea if at 1.6 tdi from vw is the same procedure?
I'm thinking about getting started according to your indications.
thanks for posting
Wish you had an amazon store to link to the parts!
The trick turning the tensioner opposite just saved my engines life from being firebombed
Yes very clear and concise. Thanks 😊
Great job pal!!!
Fantastic video. Thanks.
intresting video thx for posting i realy apreciate
Hello, nice video. Is this procedure applicable also for the 1.6 TDI? Thanks
Great video very helpful
gracias por sus explicaciones y mi pregunta es para que me haga el favor y decirme si esta repartición también funciona para el wv traspor 1.8 modelo 2014
do you have video for fuel injection high pressure pump? grate video safe me a lot of reading on Mitchell !!
شكرا جزيلا وبارك الله فيكم
very good someone who talks well done
Thanks for helping
i did my 2006 jetta 1.9 brm, was really easy! This only has a one more gear and one more ldler i believe but same idea pretty much.
That's the best I have seen thanks and all the best
I have 99 passat gas 4 cylnder turbo is the job the same way for this engine as well thanks great video
great information given thanx,
God bless you, you saved my life!!!
Thanks for the great video!
Super video thanks
Excellent very informative
Thank you sir 🇧🇩🤝
Hi, what's the green key used to lock the camshaft pulley? Do you have a spare part number and a brand?
hey. nice video. why do you need to loosen up the camshafts spracket?
Have you got a link to the locking tools you’ve used
thanks you man it was very helpfull
Excellent video
