@Global Communications to be honest I’ve fitted 100s of gates kits and never had a problem.. there are certain brands I’d avoid but I’ve always had confidence in gates
Thank you so much for producing this video - it was extremely clear and easy to follow. I was able to carry out the water pump / timing belt RR on my 2.0 TDI MK7 Golf and saved over AU$1,200.00. I don't have a lift, but as you said, it's quite doable at ground level. Thanks again mate, great work!

Thanks for the comment, glad to help 😃👌👍
did you source the timing belt parts and pin kit locally? I'm about to this job on my 2015 Octavia in Sydney.
The best properly detailed guide I've seen for these engines on UA-cam. Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks for the comments, much appreciated as a small UA-cam channel 👍👌😃
I was confident doing this job on my Octavia vRS MK3 2.0 TDI as done my Fabia vRS previously. This video just confirmed everything along the way. Absolutely fantastic video. Thank you so much!

was about to ask about this engine vs the Mk3 Octavia. Good to know this is for my car.
@@stevewandel9317 yes mate. I have a 2014 Octavia vRS MK3, exactly same engine etc :)
The reason why the book says to loosen the camshaft bolts and pump centre nut is for proper belt tension to be achieved without altering the timing.

@@diydaly question for ya, at the part where you have the belt on with the left side with a bit of slack; right side taut, I performed the check of two full rotations and then reinserted my pins. The pin on the fuel pump was hard to get in this time around, before it had slipped in no problem.
I’m afraid I somehow ended up one tooth off, although I left that pin in the entire time.

Any advice? Take it all off and put the pins in so everything is dead on, and readjust the belt?

Thanks for the great how-to, made the job really easy for me 👍
I just put on a Gates kit. Tension adjuster broke even with finger tight nut. I see Gates claim it is user fault, and they have investigated the problem and the nut has to be held still while setting tension. In my opinion it is a crap part made out of some sort of cast material and not real steel. Since it is my own car i just used some pliers on the broken part instead of the hex tool.
Thankyou very much 👍😁 tips much appreciated!

quick question have you ever had a issue getting the air out of the cooling system doing it this way ? awesome video by the way , great detail , keep up the hard work ! cheers
Thanks! new usually works that way 👍 on different vehicles its not always the case but these bleed up fine
Hello my friend, you think we need change the water pump aswel !?I think just the belt enough, because I think the new parts quality is not same as the factory's part!thanks
Yeah I’d always replace the pump on these engines unless it had recently been done.. Aslong as you are fitting a decent brand kit
Great video. Getting ready for this job and read that people are having dpf pressure sensor crack and catch fire from the josseling of the engine after this job. Have you heard of this /ran into this issue?
Thanks mate , no I’ve never had that issue or heard of it tbh .. we’ve fitted 100s without any issues 👍
Other videos say you have to loosen both pulleys to make sure the belt is tensioned properly. Does it matter if they weren’t? Could the belt not go on properly if that wasn’t done?
When the screws of the camshaft and the high-pressure pump are not loosened, it can result in the timing belt being unevenly tensioned, which sometimes can be recognized by the pointer of the timing belt tensioner moving back and forth when turning the crankshaft by hand. This can lead to faster wear of the tensioner pulley; in some cases, the tensioner may become defective shortly after replacing the timing belt, which in turn can lead to problems in the timing belt drive and cause engine damage. There have been reports here in Germany about this issue, as some workshops did not loosen the screws, resulting in engine damage. Please don't misunderstand, everything can still turn out fine, but one must be aware of this risk.
Good afternoon, I’ve just started watching your video’s, and find them very informative!! Please could you tell me the video you have on the Audi 2.0 ltr tdi cam belt change, would it be the same for a mk6 golf 2.0 ltr tdi ?? Many thanks,

No its abit different it should be more like the Audi A3 timing belt video ive done 👍
Did you tried to remove the screw behind the engine mount and remove the cover without removing the engine mount? Kinda looks like it could go without the faff
Probly looks harder that it is , I don’t remember it being too hard 👍
Great video very informative and clear, I have a 2009 2.0 ltr tdi tt is their much if any difference between the golf and tt when changing the cambelt? Thanks Mick.

Hi DIYDaly, i have my Golf CRBC engine with 136k miles on it. I had the timing belt, water pump, idlers and tensioner replaced in 2019 at 72k miles. What mileage should i be looking at to replace it again? I drive 24k miles a year mainly on motorway

Great Vid , thanks . I have a Skoda Superb mk3 2015, motor looks exactly like this, will the early version timing pin kit be ok or do I need the later version ? Thanks

Thanks for the comment 👌😁👍
Hello, what's the difference between CRBC and DCYA engines?
Im not really sure to be honest mate
Your lucky it didn’t overheat as the engine needs the cooling system to be bled by using software as it has two electric cooling pumps it has a secondary cooling system and programming the system take about 30 minutes. It goes through a stage of opening and shutting of the electric pump motors to expel air locks.
Thanks for the info

Nice video mate! Do you have to use the locking tools or you can use the good old method of marking the timing marks ?
You could just paint mark them but they are a mega cheap timing pin kit and its worth getting them, only issue with only paint marking them is with the belt being really tight to get on you often find it'll keep disturbing the pulleys.. 👍 I have done it in the past with out the pins though
@@diydaly thank you ! also what will happen if i use a water pump that doesn't have hole all the way through for plunger ? this means coolant will never touch that sensor.
@@Amritbhangal you will barely notice any difference .. the plunger is electronically actuated and just simply shields the pump to warm the system up quicker

Question: Are you able to recode the ECU to no longer look for the non-variable water pump, and/or delete the rear electric "heater support pump" that runs when the OE variable pump is covered by the shroud thus moving only coolant through the head/EGR/heater core via the electric pump? Good video but one mistake you need to losen the cam shaft pulley and fuel pump pulley so they move in their slots before puting tension on the belt. Turn them clock wise as far as they go in slots before fitting belt that way when tensioning they move left. The way you done it you are only tensioning one side of belt. How this makes sense
Hey
Agree mate. Do i need to losen that small bolt in camshaft too? For what reason is this small one good? Dont understand really and cant find a Guideline.
After losen of camshaft pulley and pump pulley and small bolt i can install tension Roller and than beld right? Than rotate and Check again and if okay tighten it?
Just leave them on factory settings.
Excellent detail and close up shots. Thank you for taking the time to explain so clearly👍

Superb!! What a great, detailed video. My car has just gone into the garage for same job on a Mk7 Golf 2013 2.0 TDI. Years ago, I`d done a cambelt change myself, but now, I let someone else with tools, knowledge, time and confidence do it. Great to see the amount of work that goes into such, in essence, a simple job i.e. remove a belt and put it back on. So time consuming to replace a belt!! Thanks for the video. Much better than any channel on TV!!!

Why didn’t you have the fuel pump and cam pulley tool to get the vernier adjustment on those 2 pulleys??
At least that way you wouldn’t need to remove the locking pin in can and you could fit the belt in the correct order from crankshaft
The condition of that is a shocking indictment of modern VAG.

Just in the process of doing this and I figured I'd warn people that the newer gates tensioners are very weak. Mine snapped at the hex key part with minimal warning while trying to tension. I tried replicating the circumstances with the original tensioner (also gates) and I had to put in a LOT of force too get it to break. Bought a replacement from VW made by litens which looks to be a much beefier design. Just FYI for anyone doing this.
Thanks for the info
When should I change the timing belt on my Golf 7 GTD 2.0 184hp? Can u give me an advice because i don't have the service manual, thanks.
They all differ slightly I think it’s 5years or 80,000 miles which ever comes first
The correct way To time/tension these correctly the cam and fuel pump pully should be lossened before tensionong the belt.
There is a TPI for gates tensioners fitted to these engines going faulty.
Best to stick with genuine kits or INA kits that use the litenes tensioner.
Bleeding the system should be done with diagnostic program like ODIS.
Have had to bleed loads of systems After other garages or diy mechanics just fill up the coolant with out correctly bleeding the sytem.
They are normally ok for a week or two then just pressure up and chuck coolant out if not bleed with diagnostics.
You guys are Phenomenal!! Bar none, the best documented how-to I have seen! This will help when I do my 2015 TDI, here across the Pond.
Thanks very much for the comments! much appreciated as a small YT channel 👍👌😃
Awesome video! Watched all of it from start to finish. One question - at 48:38 when you start the engine, there is quite noticeable squeaking noise coming from the timing belt area. Sounds like the new rollers could be making it, as they are spinning round. Is this normal at all? I have the same noise on my VW Golf. If it's not the rollers, then what could it be? Thanks.
I think that was just a little belt squeak from some coolant on it tbh
Is there anyway of checking the belt and water pump has been changed without taking anything apart? I've agreed to purchase a car and dealer has agreed to replace the belt and pump. Wonder if there anyway I can look around engine to prove so
Thanks
afraid not really mate, not without removing the covers as a minimum
After changing the belt and water pump the water temp gauge is staying at 50. Suspect an air lock but don’t know how to check
You can perform a bleeding process using a diagnostic device such as VCDS, or you can purchase a bleeding device to do it manually. After that, there shouldn't be an airlock.
One thing I didn't understand was the 45 degree setting after torqueing the water pump. Never heard of a 45 degree torque setting, what is that? Thanks!
It’s angle rather tourqe , basically you’ll need and angle gauge
Fantastic video subscribed 👍 do you know if you have to remove the top part of the cambelt cover to be able to get the rocker cover off?
I’m not 100% sure but I think you do
so is the plunger redundant now with the modified water pump? I hope so because I busted mine removing it!
Yes but if you’ve broke it , it might throw a fault code up

Thanks! 👍
Great video thanks, by far the best i have watched for doing this job, clear and concise.
👍 thanks mate
Hello mate, bloody marvellous vid!
As you remove the fuel pipes have you come across any issues with starting it up or anything?…. Everyone I’ve done I’ve left the fuel system connected and battled with that fucking filter and pipes being in the way as autodata specifically says to not disconnect them…. I always just assumed it was due to air getting into the system and starting it was a ballache but if you’ve never had any issues after you’ve disconnected them, then this job is about to get a hell of a lot easier
Thanks! No I’ve never had any issues .. tbf if I can get away with not disconnecting them I’d prefer to not but just depends how much in the way they are.. 👍
@@diydaly I disconnected then anyway and it started up a dream 👌🏻
Is the same motor that 2.0 TDI 150 cv of Leon FR 2019? Mi car has adblue
Should be pretty much the same
Thanks, great job on the video and also on all the reference information for parts, tools and torques. Note: The amazon tool kit is currently not available and the EBay kit cannot be shipped to the USA, but that is not your fault... There are a few more items you did not show or write down? -- 1. The change interval for the belt/water pump. 2. the book value time for the entire job. Many repair shops overcharge on the parts (full retail and administration fee... BIG profit here) and the time (more unearned profit). With this information you can calculate the actual cost of the job. The book value is a not-to-exceed number for BELOW average mechanics so that the customer is not over-charged on time. The automotive industry has taken this as the time charging value for every job even if they spent less actual time on the job. This type of behavior is unethical for professionals such as lawyers and engineers. Imagine if your lawyer charged you more billing time than they actually spent! (Reference: book/movie "The Firm" The firm overcharged and sent invoices/bills to their clients in the US mail making their billing mail fraud!)
Thanks for the comments / info Andrew 👍
Fantastic video. Been ‘off the tools’ for over 30 years but always kept up to date with modern motoring and kept my tool kit updated. Now retired this video inspired me to give it a go - brilliant. Cam belt top cover a bit fiddly off and on but the video was a massive help - thank you 👍

Hi i use kis online as a workshop data base , tech data is part of it ..
Awesome, comprehensive video, thank you so much for taking the time to a) shoot and talk through the steps, and b) take the time to edit/upload it. You have saved me a lot of time and effort, by being able to refer back to this, at certain important 'reference' points. Top bloke! 👍😎
Nice one , thanks for the comments! Always nice to hear positive feedback 👍👍
My water pump failed ay 119K in my 2015 Passat TDI (NMS, USA). I did my water pump and timing belt last weekend by following your UA-cam video. Your UA-cam video is the best and easiest one relates to the repair in my car. When installing the new timing belt the easiest way for me was is putting the belt to the water pump at last. Step by step procedure explained in the video was very help full. Thank you very much buddy.
Nice one , glad to hear it👍👍 thanks
This video really helped me understand the procedure to do a cambelt change on my golf. Thank you! it has been a great help! Your new subscriber all the way from South Africa!
