This guy is legitimately an excellent mechanic. Going through all that troubleshooting and repair work while installing an aftermarket exhaust in under 2 hours with no power tools... amazing. This is a great idea for a video series and there's no question Andy earned that GSR. Those are sick cars and I really hope it doesn't get stolen.

@@JohnSuave The main difference is that garages don't get ideal conditions like this though. This is a clean car with not much rust and it's a fairly simple model that's over 20 years old. Parts have room for access unlike a modern car that tightly packaged to save space and requires you to remove 4 other parts to access the one you need to replace. Mechanics also have to deal with tonnes of built up road grime, mixed with water and salt if you're from Canada, Eastern USA or UK so they'd spend more time just trying to remove a bolt. It's hard to know if they're charging you 3 hours labour for a typically 3 hour job or if they're charging for 3 hours of wrestling stupid stubborn shit for a typically 1 hour job.
Andy's attitude throughout the whole experience was that of a winner. He already knew he had it in the bag, but yet he stayed humble. What a lad that Andy!
Actually happened to my roommate recently. Car died on his was home from work while driving. I was trying to guess what it might be while I was at work and he had it towed to a shop. My best guess was dead fuel pump. It was out of gas and his gauge doesn't work apparently.
My dad and I had an old Datsun 280Z as a project car that didn't have a working gas gauge, we would just keep track of the mileage... Until people started siphoning our gas out and we had to put a locking gas cap on, when we both experienced an empty gas tank after filling up within the last 50 miles or so.
@@FUNKOfilms had something similar happen to me, my 89 integra wouldn't start, first thing i thought was "is there gas?" I have a fuel cell in the trunk so i popped it open and could see gas in there. After having it towed to the shop 2 days ago thinking it was fuel injectors or something, the mechanic called me and said i didnt have enough gas. Pretty embarrassing moment for me

This series is actually one of the most educational that you guys have put out, up there with money pit. Just a short amount of time to diagnose and get a car running, no fluff or lengthy talk. So you can learn alot from watching these on how to diagnose these issues, and also learn about some obscure things you may not know about. Like I learned from another ep about the switch behind the clutch pedal that kept the Z from starting

This seriously reminds me of when I was in aviation maintenance school. Literally this is the kind of stuff the instructors would do to us in our troubleshooting projects
Literally three things for every car ever. Fuel, air, spark. Check the fuel system, check the ignition system, check the intake. If all three of those are good and it still doesn't work the list is even more specific: crank position sensor, starter motor, neutral safety switch. That's it. Get through all those and you can start any car. The actual trick is knowing the car well enough to know where to look without having to waste time searching or google everything.
I loved all the yelling at Andy. Also the challenges and the time deductions made this extremely entertaining. Always quality counted from you guys at the donut
Shitty technician. Any real mechanic wouldve caught the no fuel right after the battery and main fuse. No the fuel was NOT good. it didnt even prime out of the filterless hose LOL. And he failed to check spark plugs, cap n rotor while popping off the fuel line. Pretty amatuer to be honest. He couldnt even take off rust free nuts covered in oily soot. Pathetic.
this is actually such a good series in the sense of teaching someone troubleshooting for engine faults. I work on jet engines and previously worked in a backshop style job where all maintenance was scheduled and no troubleshooting was required. I now work where troubleshooting is the main focus of the job and having that simple baseline of knowledge is such a boost in efficiency of diagnosing and fixing issues. This is a great series and fuck its funny to watch them penalize him for commodities like power tools lol. Great work guys I continue to learn more and more about cars through this channel and my 1982 Datsun 280zx thanks you!

I love this concept. Hope you do more. Saw something similar at a mall once, the NHRA had brought out two top fuel dragsters and they had a competition to see which team could fire it up, strip it down and make a few changes, and then re-fire it. Something like that would be pretty cool to see.

Having literally having to go through ALL of those EXACT ignition issues on my own Integra when it suddenly decided it wouldn't start, I feel like I could of aced this in 10 mins hahahaha, though not the exhaust. That would of taken half a day and the entire video would just be non stop bleep machine.
Lmao same i own an old toyota land cruiser prado and suffered similar issues i immediately was able to tell all of the issues except the distributor and exhaust. Those 2 woulda probably made me lose XD

You can tell he's done those jobs a ton. It takes a fairly good mechanic to do so much so quickly. Recently myself and a few coworkers had to replace a starter on a cargo truck. These things weigh about 100 pounds. Due to some oversights, when all was said and done we removed and reinstalled the starter 6 times. We went from taking almost 1 hour each install, to 20 minutes. This all happened within the span of 10 hours.
He's damn good I doubt I would have gotten all the sabotaging in that time let alone getting that exhaust on I freaking hate doing exhaust let alone without a lift it is the freaking worst definitely he's the man and earned that car
I'd def skipped the exhaust with no power tools or lift he's a beast for getting that part done at all never mind in an hour. I hope he's getting paid list wherever he's working.

Shops run on book time, information pulled up from AllData or Mitchell’s. It takes the average of master mechanics and rookies. A lot of techs have to get good and beat book time to make money if they are flat rate. If they charge you for book time i.e. 2 hours and they take 8, you only paid for 2 so it works out.
yes and no, as u can see they pick the 5 easy thing tht can make a car not run. in rl, their are more than just 5 things, such as a bad fuel line, a clog fuel rail, a damage crankshaft sensor. all these things can take hours and hours to figure out.

I would love to do this. I am all for it. I was the one that set these tests up when I went to automotive school for the final, it would be nice to actually be on the other side of the test for once. But they were for electrical class, and I was much more mean about it. Also surprised you guys didnt mess with the plug wires. That would have been hilarious.

I can't imagine doing this under 2 hours without power tools. Andy was so calm during the entire challenge.

Shops run on book time, information pulled up from AllData or Mitchell’s. It takes the average of master mechanics and rookies. A lot of techs have to get good and beat book time to make money if they are flat rate. If they charge you for book time i.e. 2 hours and they take 8, you only paid for 2 so it works out.
yes and no, as u can see they pick the 5 easy thing tht can make a car not run. in rl, their are more than just 5 things, such as a bad fuel line, a clog fuel rail, a damage crankshaft sensor. all these things can take hours and hours to figure out.

I would love to do this. I am all for it. I was the one that set these tests up when I went to automotive school for the final, it would be nice to actually be on the other side of the test for once.
But they were for electrical class, and I was much more mean about it.
Also surprised you guys didnt mess with the plug wires. That would have been hilarious.
😂 that car brings back some memories. My brother had one years ago up in WA state when we were like 19 years old, and it had no windshield in it, and he still drove it all over the place, even during the winter. He just wore ski goggles when he was driving lol
