Y’all right, this song is a banger. When you check out the lyrics, it hits even harder. Coming from point of the drugs talking to the user, then the user to the drugs, and then back. The switchups match going through addiction, the highs and lows.

Kirk Hammet is the lead guitarist, but the lead singer James Hetfield is also a sick ass Guitarist. Lars Ulrich on drums. The original bass player was Cliff Burton. He sadly died in a tour bus crash in Sweden in 1986 shortly after this album came out. He’s playing bass on this song. After Cliff died, Jason Newstead took over on Bass. You should really read the lyrics to this song. It’s about drug addiction, and the “master” they speak of is the drug. Metallica has bars, listen to it again with the lyrics. The music also takes you on a journey through what it’s like to be an addict. The frantic pace is the search for the fix, where it slows down and gets all pretty sounding and shit is the high, followed by the frantic pace again of trying to score a fix after the high is over. Truly some next level Shit.

I heard this song about a Million times i love it they got accused of being devil worshippers but they made some songs that were actually anti war, anti addiction, anti slavery and pro god (like creeping death about the Passover) this one and "Disposable Heroes" "One" is also about war. Metallica makes the bars first the music is just meant to accentuate the bars they never make the track first.
The part about metallica writing the lyrics first is just not true some of the riffs they use can be months old that one of them has been working on for ages before they use it in a song

That GOD of a guitarist is Kirk Hammett. He plays lead while James Hetfield does the vocals and Rhythm guitar. James plays the first solo and Kirk plays the second solo

Really got to check the lyrics. You’ll understand better the instrumentation. From the craving, to the relief of a dose, to the comedown.
As a Metallica fan, the lyrics of this song are what make it such a masterpiece.
There are 3 parts to this song the beginning where the drugs are convincing the man to take more drugs as if that is all he needs. As if drugs would solve all his issues. The man knows he's already not doing well but trusts the drug's false promises.
In the middle of the song, the slow part is the high that the drug is giving the man. This leads to the end of the slow part showing the man coming out of the high leading to the crash afterwards. While coming out of the high into the crash the man is begging for more drugs as that is all he knows how to do at this point and asks the drugs to "fix me" and the drug claims its victory on the man with laughter. The man realizes that the Drugs lied to him and that it's really just taking away his dreams, and future.
The last part is where the man is now too far into his addiction and the Drugs, his Master, is controlling his entire life like a Puppet Master. At this point the man is so far in that his life has become a living hell and he's now doing drugs for breakfast and the drugs now occupy and rule over his life.
It's just a story of personified Drugs talking to man, and the progression of man's addiction.

To really understand Metallica you have to know the story. This is the final album with bassist Cliff Burton. Cliff was killed when their tour bus crashed in Europe. The next several albums after this one they have bassist Jason Newsted. The music changed. Not in a bad way, just ... changed. More recently, now Robert Trujillo is their bassist. Robert was the bass player in a band called Suicidal Tendencies back in the 80s and 90s. So he was a natural fit. Some say Metallica should've got Robert LONG ago.... just sayin'. Btw: Kirk Hammett does most of the solos.
I mean you are right it did change but Jason was an underrated hype man, a good bassist but he was a hell of a hype man sang some of the songs during their tours but overall underrated hype man but I do agree Robert should have been in the group long ago

Metallica is deep with strong bars, always telling a story and taking you on a journey. The musical interlude on this is like the drug high & dive. Kirk Hammet is a guitar master for sure.
