Metallica literally saved my life with this song. I listened to this track multiple times a day for weeks to give me the strength I needed to beat my meth addiction. As of writing this comment, I am 13 months and 10 days clean, holding a job, and working on buying my first house. I'm me again. I can only imagine where I'd be if I hadn't discovered this track and gotten the metaphorical kick in the balls it gave me. Right. I think the melodic, acoustic guitar part is lost on some people - or the meaning of it. That's the hit, the beautiful, drift away feeling that drugs give you. And then that part slowly builds in intensity and power and, as you rightly say, anger, of coming back to the shitty reality that you took the drugs to escape from in the first place. Then words come back when the drugs wear off and you are back at square one again. And so it goes. Personally, I've never touched opiates. I'm saving that for my old age. A few months of bliss and then I'll check out, when I'm good and ready. I have no family, I will be alone and this is my plan :)

I once lived in the shed in the front yard of my drug dealer. One morning I watched the yard birds (drug addicts with no game) arrive for their daily handout and I decided i didn't want to live that way. I left. I basically went to war; with myself. My drug me wanted to do one thing, I wanted to do something else. Good Lord what a fight and I did it on my own.... took me 3 years to kick all of drugs ass, but I got it done.... That was 1998. if people don't want to change, no amount of drug rehab is going to help them. If they DO want to change, then they have to go to war and not give up the fight.....
That was inspiring. I got divorced and lost my job last year.. I lived in a friend's camper until I was noticed (illegal within city limits). Lived in my car, finally found a tiny place to rent. I've been drinking like a fish. I can't stand being sober. Depression, self loathing.. I've intentionally pissed off my friends so they don't bother me anymore. My family in Florida is begging me to just pack up and come back, but I've been hiding my alcoholism from them and I'm burning thru my savings like dry leaves.. I just keep waking up in the afternoon and think - I'll just do this one more day and then stop tomorrow. It's been a few hundred 'one more day' talks in the mirror at this point. Thanks for your message. I'm going to keep re-reading it...👍
@@FanFanBessie2 If you want it, you have to fight for it. It wasn't easy, but damn, nobody and nothing dictates how I live, except me...... that is the attitude. Do me a favor, while you are fighting your addiction, give alcoholism a good kick in the ass for me. God speed.
@@FanFanBessie2 Good luck to you and don't give up no matter how dark it gets. And reach out for help, you'll need it, you are in the fight if your life.
When I was leaving my teenage years. I started hanging out with friends that were into the drug scene. At first it was fun, us 4 girls would sit around playing cards and drinking beer. I was introduced to cocaine and that's what we did. After 2 rehabs and my family telling me to Just Stop! Did not work for me. I couldn't take it anymore, I was dying. It took a while to get on my knees and pray for strength, I found that right path. I survived and I'm alive living a full happy life. But out of us four girls I'm the only survivor...
It’s is so pleasing to see you two take a journey and explore something different, something new. The maturity and genuine nature come out in both of you. BJ indulging, diving into the intellectual aspects of the lyrics and melodic scales. Asia is so expressive one can tell she is a very honest person! She can truly connect to the music, completely aware of the hidden avenues of songs. It’s therapeutic to watch kind souls set an example. Eyes light up in both of you. Keep up the amazing work!
Well done , Keep up he fight my sister was a addict for 25 years and has been mostly clean for the last 25. but she says every day is a fight. They call it a monkey on your back , but it's more like a 800lb Gorilla.
Asia's words really spoke to me. I lost a friend to heroin 2 weeks ago. She had finally realized her dream of being a signed recording artist and then she died suddenly. R.I.P. Paula Kaiser, frontwoman for Slow Machine. To know her was to love her.
As someone who's lived in the hole of heroin addiction for nearly 30 years, this song really speaks to the state of mind of the addict. It really does take away everything good in your life, and the more you lose the less will you have to pull yourself out of the pit. I've lost everything and everyone I've ever loved in my life, I've forgotten what is like to even like myself, let alone love myself. Kids, don't do drugs. They WILL take everything good in your life.
@@Logan-lh5tc Thank you very much for the kind wishes. Unfortunately I'm still in the same hole I was in when I made this post. I've made several attempts at sobriety since then but can never manage to get through the initial detox.
@@andrewkent650 I’m sorry to hear that ☹️ I hope you can keep a positive mindset and affirm yourself whenever you can. Seen a few people react to this song, one of the true greats of metal, and it usually takes until “chop your breakfast on a mirror” to realize what it’s about. You guys picked up on it real quick, I’m glad to know it still works so well in that way. James Hetfield, the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Metallica, has struggled with addiction and has often said that music is his therapy. He sings his demons out while Kirk Hammet plays lead guitar with those face melting solos. Others have said it, but the three parts of this song go from the driving need for the addiction, the euphoria of riding the high with that melodic guitar break in the middle, and the plunge back into being controlled with the third verse to the end of the song. Plus, fun to shout along to MASTER over and over again. Hope you listen to some others, “Fade to Black” is a favorite as well as “Sad But True,” “One,” “Bleeding Me,” it goes on and on…
This is the song that got me into metallica. First time I heard it, I was like 10. My brother came into my room, and was like, prepare to have your mind blown! I love that you guys are going down the metallica rabbit hole. Check out Pantera and Testament!!
My sis said "Bae, I need you to read" HAHAHAHAHAHA Help him out girl! I freakin lost it. That was funny. Also, this is one of THE best songs ever written in my opinion. It's a fav for me. The lead guitarist is Mr. Kirk Hammett, the legend. He is definitely one the greatest musicians , again, my opinion. Gotta say that these days or people who disagree will damn you to hell. LOL
I agree he up there for me as a guitarist not top 5 for me but he in my 10 for sure idk if my 5 could be changed srv, Jimmy hendrix, Clapton, Santana, bb king but this man is way high up there for me to he was a monster. Also same part of reaction had me rolling, I also agree with you about this song
That is totally me and my wife. As soon as B.J. said, "...oh." and I saw the look on Asia's face, I was ☠I get that look at home a lot. I know that one.😂😂😂
Hard to really compare guitarists from other genres or eras. There are some country boys nd gunk players that deserve to be in the convo. Chet Atkins is definitely one of, if not the greatest guitar player(s) ever. Classical (orchestra guitarists) guys too, that just don't ever get considered. Fender did a video of guitarists playing a metal-esque cover of the GoT theme with Tom Morello, Nuno Bettencourt, Scott Ian, Dan Weis, Ramin Djiwadi (the song's composer) and Brad Paisley. The face Nuno makes during Paisley's solo is priceless lol
Love your honesty. It's greatly needed these days. "Death's construction," comes from Black Sabbith's "War Pigs" which probably started "Metal" in the first place, years earlier. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
They got clean together years ago. I feel this song was as much a warning as a cry for help. Metallica loves their fans. They have always shown their appreciation. Pull up the lirics to all their songs you play. They are brilliant
Wow you guys had fantastic insights into this song, I’ve actually never connected the drug aspect and I’m almost positive you’re correct in the hypothesis that they saw many drug-fueled situations that inspired the song. They’ve said in interviews that they chose to stay away from all the hard drugs and instead focus mainly on alcohol, choosing to be a band that drinks vs a band that gets loaded on substances.
This song is so deep! When ur life is so hard, not all humans are strong enough nor have people surround u to help u except the only thing u can rely on substance to feel numb the pain.
There's no easy answer to addiction, but this song is about one of the things that really helped me: realizing that as long as you're a slave to a substance you'll never be in control of your life, your decisions, or even your own mind. I can promise anyone reading this that life is immeasurably better on the other side of addiction. Choose life. Choose love. Choose freedom. Get off your knees and stand proud. 🙌🏼💙🙏🏼
i am sitting here in tears ...i wish i could reach through this screen and hug you both and thank you in person for what you are doing with your lives. The love it takes to step up and DO SOMETHING is beautiful to behold. i am sharing this, and if i get any money soon i am going to make sure to contribute to your work. God bless you and Speed your efforts.
Props to you two, you got the message far faster than most reactors...they usually didn't get it until the line "chop your breakfast on a mirror" in the 2nd verse
the amazing thing is the arrangements throughout this masterpiece mimic musically the ups and downs, downs mimic is the soft solo Kirk delivers as he then gradually increases speed as if the drug has been purchased and finally the lyrics 'fix me' followed by the insane fast solo mimicking getting high. then drugs laugh at end cause he was fixed. crazy thought put into this song
Really starting to become one of my favorite reaction channels. Love the way you both went in here with sensitivity and careful consideration to the topic . Keep up the good work! I’ll be watching for sure!
That's the thing about Metallica, they go hard on the lyrics on their older stuff. Anything from And Justice For All and older has lyrical content that speaks along with music that speaks. Thanks for seeing this and reacting 😁 I really enjoyed this one. Also, we know what BJ means 😉😁 I suggest my favorite on this album "Disposable Heroes". Lyric video because they always saying something deep. I love you guys too. ML&R from MN
They NEED to do the lyric video instead of the official video. All the clips seem to distract people from the words & music. After that the official video would be great
There's a running joke in the fast-rap genre that sometimes you just have to pause the song to let the man breathe. 😂 I just love that this classic remains timeless and that we get to share this together. Important message and musical genius. Kirk has played that solo a billion times. He's earned a break once in a while. Lol
@Colt Man Then with all due respect, you're a 'guitar player' who doesn't really feel the intricacies of the solos (note the choice of the verb I used is feel and not understand) and also someone who hasn't seen enough reactions of non-musicians who have absolutely been won over by nothing but the guitar solos. You can break down a guitar solo to it's basic parts when you study it theoretically by looking at it in various ways, scales and techniques used being 2 very commonly used ones, but that's just ways to *study* the solo. Once a solo happens, if you can't feel the storytelling happening then it doesn't matter how well you understand the science of it, you ain't feeling it. For someone who does feel the music, pausing a guitar solo is akin to stopping mid-sex before orgasm is achieved, or if you want a more PG way of saying it, listening to a monologue or emotional speech being given only for it to be cut in the middle before the point is truly made. Some of the most emotive and emotional music on guitar is Blues music and most Blues guitarists use the same exact scales and same exact techniques, but can paint entirely different pictures with them. If you don't get it, then fine, you're a theory based guitarist, and there's nothing wrong with that. But don't go around claiming that your opinion is the right way by virtue of you being a guitar player who understands scales and techniques because that is not the be all and end all of guitar playing by far. I could easily argue that in their first 4-5 albums, almost every solo Kirk played was unique in it's construction and implementation within the song, even though by certain parameters your assessment of them being 'samey' is also true. It's art, it's interpreted by the listener in different ways, but the key thing is, art should be interpreted after you get the full picture, or the complete dosage, and not halfway through or in broken fragments if you really want to understand it. Lyrics can be, as that's literature, but that's why musical genres that are music based, like most rock and metal music, have such a strong focus on the instrumentation as part of telling the story. As opposed to other genres of music which are lyrics based like most Country and Rap music
What is happening musically is reflective of what is happening ... the peaceful highs and pull of the addiction and the euphoria and back to the despair. Even when you realize that you are closer to death and that it only ever promised lies, it's telling you you're a slave to it!
Awesome reaction, this music genre is really deeper than "outsiders" give it credit for.. "Manifest" by the Brazilian band "Sepultura" is a wild ride!!
Great reaction. I know I can count on both of you to hear the message. The song was written, in my opinion, to trigger the individual that would hear the message and rise up against the strong man. The Master. Hopefully many in an addiction hear the message and get angry and rise above the pain of addiction. Cheers
That, young folks, is the adorable, Filipino shredding god, Kirk Hammett. And he has the biggest horror movie memorabilia collection I’ve ever seen. it’s literally been in museums.
Usually, addiction is an escape from something & then an escape from what was done to get them, its a vicious cycle that way. The need to escape the demon that can't be faced leads to a life of running from thinking and feeling.
You hit the nail on the man.... This song was written after james was at a party on the road and went to the bathroom.... He saw some people in there shooting up coke and heroin.... It freaked him out so he wrote these lyrics
I remember when this came out ….I was 14-15 & with no radio or MTV airplay you still couldn’t escape this ….it was THAT big….they were the biggest underground band of all time hands down
Oh you guys! You made the cardinal sin of pausing mid solo!!! You paused the guitar God Kirk!! Great reaction though, Metallica members have all had substance abuse issues for a lot of their lives
This song was written in three parts 1. Is the calling of the drugs. 2. The soft guitar was the euphoria from the high. 3. Anger after the high leaves you and you are left with the lies.
If you want to have your minds blown, check out the their live concert in Moscow after the fall of the Soviet iron curtain in the early 90s. There are literally like a million people in the audience. It is surreal.

They are amazing musicians, even live. Their music, especially on this album and the ...And Justice For All album speak to society and so many valid issues. This song came out back in the 80s when we had the Crack epidemic and so much else going on. Love them!
This was the first Metallica song I ever heard when I was 13. It blew my mind and opened up a whole world of great music for me. Love all your videos. I'm so glad ya'll are checking out all these different musicians and bands with an open mind. I'm sure you've found it very rewarding. Also, B.J. that T-shirt from The Wire is badass
If you guys are liking Metallica, the song "Orion", from the same album (Master Of Puppets), is a masterpiece, the last and best composition by Cliff Burton, Metallica bassist, killed in a tragic bus crash on a tour at Sweden, Sep 27, 1986. This one you guys need to listen to with closed eyes and just feel.

I've heard this song soooo many times, and never knew he said "Chop your breakfast on a mirror"... The words to this song have always been part of it, but I really have just focused on the amazing musicianship of it. WOW! He definitely said something there!!! 👍

May god be with you always
When I was leaving my teenage years. I started hanging out with friends that were into the drug scene. At first it was fun, us 4 girls would sit around playing cards and drinking beer. I was introduced to cocaine and that's what we did. After 2 rehabs and my family telling me to Just Stop! Did not work for me. I couldn't take it anymore, I was dying. It took a while to get on my knees and pray for strength, I found that right path. I survived and I'm alive living a full happy life. But out of us four girls I'm the only survivor...
Thank you for sharing your story, Glad you managed to get out of it
Damn glad you are with us. Praise Jesus!

Thank you for doing this song. It has a special meaning to me. I battled addiction for 17 years, but have now been clean for over 10 years.
They WILL take everything good in your life.
much love brother,,hold the line,
Thank you so much for sharing this :( I hope you’re doing okay now and that you’re clean
I know we have different situations, but I treated my depression with affirming myself. “Sammy Ingram” and “Electrasoul” are youtube creators that helped me. I’m sure it could help you, but I’m not sure, since we are different people with different situations and mindsets. I still wanted to let you be known of them, though, just incase they can help. I wish you luck.
@@andrewkent650 and for a bit of back information, I had depression since I was around 7 years old and often had suicidal thoughts. just to give more reason why i think you could change your situation too
Seen a few people react to this song, one of the true greats of metal, and it usually takes until “chop your breakfast on a mirror” to realize what it’s about.
You need to react to Metallica "One" official music video. One of the greatest metal songs ever created.
Definitely
No one takes you on a musical journey quite like Metalllica.
So true
@@Qmocean true different genres and styles different goats
I’m digging your list!!!! Amazing musicians as well!!
Kirk Hammett kills the guitar. This song is about heroin addiction and its STRONG
Your both exactly right. You broke it down perfectly. Great song
The whole album is a must! One of their best!🔥🤟
This song is an absolute masterpiece. The transition from the fast paced, to the calm and finally back to intense. Flawless.
First time watching and I got too say...GREAT REACTION!
Thank you so much!!
"By Demons be driven" is the most heavy metal song ever, by the heaviest band ever, Pantera!! Also, You two are doing great....
Master Of Puppets, the best written and instrumental metal number ever, this is a piece of pure art !
Rule number one:NEVER PAUSE DURING A GUITAR SOLO!
i am sitting here in tears ...i wish i could reach through this screen and hug you both and thank you in person for what you are doing with your lives.
Kudos for picking up on the message of this classic, a lot tend to miss it, sadly. Very powerful!
the amazing thing is the arrangements throughout this masterpiece mimic musically the ups and downs, downs mimic is the soft solo Kirk delivers as he then gradually increases speed as if the drug has been purchased and finally the lyrics 'fix me' followed by the insane fast solo mimicking getting high. then drugs laugh at end cause he was fixed. crazy thought put into this song
Really starting to become one of my favorite reaction channels. Love the way you both went in here with sensitivity and careful consideration to the topic . Keep up the good work! I’ll be watching for sure!
Love when you actually understand the lyrics to the song and the message
check out that album cover again and you will see the strings of the puppeteer going down to the headstones ,great reaction guys
That's the thing about Metallica, they go hard on the lyrics on their older stuff. Anything from And Justice For All and older has lyrical content that speaks along with music that speaks. Thanks for seeing this and reacting 😁 I really enjoyed this one. Also, we know what BJ means 😉😁
I suggest my favorite on this album "Disposable Heroes". Lyric video because they always saying something deep. I love you guys too. ML&R from MN
The black album has a lot of deep songs
I grew up in the 80s and 90s. This tape was played till it broke. Memories much love
Need to do Metallica 'One' official video. Great reaction per usual.
To many people have done one. For the past couple of years I saw at least 100 reactions.
@@MrGrifter123 but new listeners need to see it several times to get all the details.
They NEED to do the lyric video instead of the official video. All the clips seem to distract people from the words & music. After that the official video would be great
When you do a metal reaction. One rule: Don't pause during the solo. You let that man make that thing Sang!!!! Respect.
Solo in any genre (except full guitar instrumentals)
There's a running joke in the fast-rap genre that sometimes you just have to pause the song to let the man breathe. 😂 I just love that this classic remains timeless and that we get to share this together. Important message and musical genius. Kirk has played that solo a billion times. He's earned a break once in a while. Lol
@Colt Man It's a joke dude. I'm sure I would cringe at your guitar playing.
@Colt Man your comment is the only thats cringe worthy. Just my opinion i don’t expect you to care in the slightest, but u dead ass wrong
this interlude is probably my favorite piece of music ever, so relaxing
love your reactions on metal bands, greetings from serbia, far away in south-east europe :)
The overall song is constructed based on doing drugs is hard & fast at first. then it's that soft high then you start feening again & it hits hard
This is the best band I have ever seen in concert. I recommend that if they go on tour again you get tickets to see the greatness at work
Great reaction.
You gotta react to this live in Seattle "89".....amazing!!!
nah 1991 moscow
Excellent message, thank you both!
Metallica "disposable heroes". It's epic
This song is amazing live when Hetfield calls out master, and then the crowd calls master back to him. such an amazing experience.
Usually, addiction is an escape from something & then an escape from what was done to get them, its a vicious cycle that way. The need to escape the demon that can't be faced leads to a life of running from thinking and feeling.
I love yout breaking bad reactions and movie reactions but i come back & watch your metallica reactions every once in awhile.
Some real music right there!! Damn he's making that guitar cry!!
You hit the nail on the man.... This song was written after james was at a party on the road and went to the bathroom.... He saw some people in there shooting up coke and heroin.... It freaked him out so he wrote these lyrics
My addiction is this song. James is a genius musician and lyricist!
First rule of heavy metal ' NEVER STOP ON A SOLO ' 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 PANTERA - DOMINATION ( LIVE MOSCOW ) NEXT 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I've watched your movie reviews now I get to watch you react to one of my favorite bands. HEAVY METAL
Great reaction, except when you disobeyed metal's first commandment: 'Thou shalt not pause a guitar solo. Ever!'
Lol
I remember when this came out ….I was 14-15 & with no radio or MTV airplay you still couldn’t escape this ….it was THAT big….they were the biggest underground band of all time hands down
Oh you guys! You made the cardinal sin of pausing mid solo!!! You paused the guitar God Kirk!! Great reaction though, Metallica members have all had substance abuse issues for a lot of their lives
Master of Puppets is such an epic song. Deeply thought provoking. It's great to see people interested in Metallica and giving them a listen.
Parents of the 80's : It's the devils music. Metallica : Don't do drugs.
This song was written in three parts
1. Is the calling of the drugs.
2. The soft guitar was the euphoria from the high.
3. Anger after the high leaves you and you are left with the lies.
Never stop a guitar solo...ever...
This is their best album. Its even in the library on congress for its contribution to the heavy metal culture( or something along those lines)
He’s talking about how drugs will destroy your life and they will become your master
Kirk Hammett, lead guitar! Master Of Puppets, a Masterpiece! This Song touch my Soul, for my reason! Thank you guys!
The music itself mimics the feeling of needing a fix, getting the fix, and abruptly coming down and needing more.
I’ve always gotten that too. Thought the slowing down middle of song was the floating on a high
@@paulthompson6873 Yes sir!

If you want to have your minds blown, check out the their live concert in Moscow after the fall of the Soviet iron curtain in the early 90s. There are literally like a million people in the audience. It is surreal.
Ive heard this song 10 billion times over the last 30 some years BUT it hits me hard all over again when i see YOU hearing it for the first time ! It makes me feel that magic again when I FIRST heard it ! Thank you ! I got the chills like i did when i was 15 ! LOL !! For real .
This song hits different as an adult who's witnessed people crumble under addiction. Thanks for the reaction to one of my all time favorites!
They are amazing musicians, even live. Their music, especially on this album and the ...And Justice For All album speak to society and so many valid issues. This song came out back in the 80s when we had the Crack epidemic and so much else going on. Love them!
A great Song i grew up with this song regularly playing in my cd player.
Great instrument players, very smooth transitions. Have some of the greatest instrumentals with orion, call of ktulu, too live is to die.
I love when she lights up at the solos.
Love the channel, guys.
I love it that you guys totally got this. I remember my dad hating Metallica, and I kept trying to tell him, they are the good guys!!
You two get it. Lots of people don't get it. Another song with that deep message is Welcome Home Sanitarium. Another song about being controlled. Please react to that one.
First time to see them 1986 Dublin ( with Cliffie) touring this album. Still blows me away....
Heard this song for the first time when I was around 13. It's literally one of the main reasons I never got into drugs! (other than pot) Never wanted to be a puppet!
I've heard this song soooo many times, and never knew he said "Chop your breakfast on a mirror"... The words to this song have always been part of it, but I really have just focused on the amazing musicianship of it. WOW! He definitely said something there!!! 👍
When there's a solo, please let it through without pausing! Also please react to Nothing Else Matters, or The Unforgiven. They are slower but very very deep and beautiful!
BTW, you guys hit the meaning perfectly 👌! James Hatfield said he wrote this after seeing many people affected by drugs once they became famous.
that whole album is some of the best rock ever made
I have been a fan of metallica for 40 years. My neck is facked from head banging. I LOVE this song and so many more. Orion, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fade to Black and on and on.
