If Lionel was able to perform like that after having his entire nutrition plan go to shit on the bike then this is gonna be one hell of a year. And I’m here for it. When he puts together an entire race from start to finish he is going to damn near unbeatable. Can’t wait for worlds 70.3.

@@jrcp87 I'm a bit confused. Does he mean first professional race of the year? He's been doing pro races for years, so I'd imagine he's registered as a pro triathlete. Although to the others, I agree, this kind of stuff happens, and he handled the situation well.

You see... I do think that are other athletes that may be better than Sanders, but he's got this "hard working human", "fighter", "people's champ" vibe to him that is so great. Almost like an anti-hero. You want Sanders to succeed because he's so honest about himself and so gracious to others. Storytelling at its best. 👏

Thanks for sharing. Hearing of your struggles as an amazing pro makes me feel a little better about my age-grouper nutritional mishaps! Those bottles are way too small for most cages. I encountered that problem in a previous Ironman: Boulder one year when it super hot and people were dropping. I couldn't keep the bottles in my cage and ended up a little thirsty between two aid stations. But, I am out there for fun and it isn't a huge deal. And, I hear you on emotional scars from nutritional things! I never even felt sick in a single race up until 2016 and I started in 1992. In all of my Ironmans since 2016, I have vomited through the marathon and even part of the bike (have gotten good at avoiding my shoes while pedaling); I have tried more salt, less salt, more fluid, less fluid, more food, less food, no engineered food and only real food, etc. Even letting an ice chip melt in my mouth would trigger the vomiting. I am too stubborn to quit, so I've ended up with rhabdo from pushing through the dehydration. I am not sure what changed, except I had Stevens-Johnson Syndrome in late 2015 (triggered by the antibiotic Bactrim for some road rash that got infected). I have vomited in every Ironman since. SJS damages mucous membranes, so maybe my gut is just not capable anymore of the stress of the distance because of damage. I finally have my first races coming up since the pandemic started. I have been doing this just for fun and don't have my soul invested, but I am still fearing what the heck will happen with the vomiting. I guess I will find out. One of these years, I will figure out what I am doing. Apparently, I am a slow learner. Anyway, epic race and you did an amazing job fighting to the finish! You are definitely a huge asset to the sport of triathlon with the spirit with which you compete. Thanks again for sharing your perspective.

Incredible battle both physically and mentally Lionel.
I know nothing about what training for an Iron Man is like. But from watching this recap and in reviewing the unfortunate times you’ve had to walk a course, perhaps nutrition was never the “issue” for your missed podiums finishes. Did you consume a lot less carbs, electrolytes, and water then anticipated? Imagine if you did have the right fuelling during the race…
Somethings changed for your race day performance and this race was a positive sign!
    Cheers from Windsor
