This scene doesnt really seem to be about elton being in love with bernie as many people seem to think, its about elton being lonely and feeling abandoned by his only friend. Like elton said in the rehab scene after he tried to kiss bernie, he loved him like a brother and nothing else. This is just elton feeling upset about being alone at the party, and he even mentions it later on in the restaurant scene/yellow brick road scene that bernie constantly left him being for some girl, but that never meant that he wanted to be more than friends with bernie
I take it as a bit of both. I’m sure he did care for him deeper but knew it couldn’t be that way... so he pushed it away. But still is sad that his friend is leaving him behind as well.
@@colinerikstanhouse6385 ik im late but- The obvious answer seemed to be that the song was written about Maxine Feibelmann, Taupin’s first wife, who was indeed a “seamstress for the band.” After all, the credits for the song on the Madman Across The Water album end with the phrase “With love to Maxine.” But dedicating a song to someone and writing a song about that person are two different things, and Taupin clarified the confusion in an interview with Rolling Stone which he quotes on his website. “We came to California in the fall of 1970 and it seemed like sunshine just radiated from the populace,” Taupin says. “I guess I was trying to capture the spirit of that time, encapsulated by the women we met, especially at the clothes stores and restaurants and bars all up and down the Sunset Strip. They were these free spirits, sexy, all hip-huggers and lacy blouses, very ethereal the way they moved.” “They were just so different from what I’d been used to in England,” Taupin continues. “They had this thing about embroidering your clothes. They wanted to sew patches on your jeans. They mothered you and slept with you. It was the perfect Oedipal complex.” Taupin’s lyrics effortlessly bring these women to life by amalgamating them into a single “blue-jean baby” who captures the heart of the narrator. She floats among her surroundings seemingly unaffected, handling even the rougher aspects of it with a shrug: “The boulevard is not that bad.” Her charms are never more evident than in the immortal lines about her reaction to her favorite song: “The words she knows, the tune she hums.” What seems like an ephemeral relationship is anything but that, as is made clear when the chorus comes around and John belts out “Hold me closer, tiny dancer.” With the combination of the stirring music and Elton’s powerful vocal, it’s one of those cathartic moments that only the best rock ballads can produce. “Why ‘Tiny Dancer’? Well, I guess that’s just poetic license. It just sounds better than ‘small dancer’ or little dancer.’” Indeed it does.
I don't know why, but I cry everytime I watch this scene! Maybe because I know too well how it feels like to be rejected and have to hide my feelings... Wish at least that I could sing like Elton or Taron :(
I get ya this is literally me rn 🙃 but music keeps me moving along and keeps my mind moving. A strange case of 'it depressing me while also pushing me past that bad feeling' (probably makes no sense aha)
Actually he admitted that the way they did this in the movie was just to make it flow better. He never had a crush on Bernie. I'm assuming this was because Bernie got a gf and he was lonely and didn't have that kind of love. So more jealousy as he didn't have him by his side as much. The kissing scene was fake. In real life elton just put his hand on Bernies leg and he reminded him that he didn't like him like that. It was just a subconscious thing I imagine. I've researched on it. And that's what I've put together 🙂
Director Dexter Fletcher and his cinematographer have never gotten nearly the credit they deserve for their great work on this film. The TINY DANCER scene with the beautiful lighting, Chinese lanterns and perfect lens choice results in making this scene magical and dreamy and beautiful.
Apparently, Dexter did Bohemian Rhapsody in the last two weeks of filming other than saving what was left after Bryan Singer was fired, he took the job just to learn on what to avoid when he was about to make Rocketman, in which he filmed the movie shortly after he wrapped up Bohemian Rhapsody
I just really want to talk about this scene. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, he’s just walking around and singing right? But there’s soooo much to unpack here. Watching this scene gave me a whole different point of view on this song and the acting by Taron is on point for the emotion of this scene. It was genius to use this song in this moment. It was honestly emotional to see how this is represented; how it must have been difficult back then feeling lonely at social functions when you’re gay and there’s such a heavy pressure to get around in this industry. Not many gay people were out or super active in being together whereas you see so many straight couples throughout the scene being together and all over each other. Elton is obviously lonely (and shy as he is) because his best friend ditches him for a girl and not only his best friend but someone he does have feelings for. He has to deal with seeing Bernie happy with this girls while he pushes his feelings down and walks around by himself at this big party after a huge moment in his life. When he’s describing the tiny dancer in the song the way Taron played it made it feel like he was listing all the great things about this girl Bernie is with and thinking “of course he’d like her she’s beautiful, but I wish that were me” it was just such a beautiful scene and a creative way to put it in the movie. That’s all.
I feel Elton on this one cause I loved my best friend in that way for two years when I know he only liked me as a friend. That’s why I didn’t tell him for so long because I was horrified and I knew what I was feeling was wrong. He used to go on so many hook up dates and it killed me so I basically smoked a fuck ton of weed and found anyway to get alcohol. Things are great and healthy now that I told him
