“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.
In that present moment resides all your beautiful memories my friend. So how many beautiful memories or friends you have made worth remembering. It’s called a present for a reason . It’s literally a present.
Listening to the song while reading that quote it occurs to me that even music - for it to have an effect on us - requires to go back and forth in time, both recollecting and anticipating. In the present moment we hear only a single note, which means nothing to us. Only by remembering what came before and anticipating what will come music can affect us.
One of the most iconic scenes in all of cinema.....the meanings of friendships.....forgiveness.....coming of age.....and most of all the power of music.
Icons are relgious symbols so no, that's not it. Even if you mean emblematic, you havent said of what. I wish people would have some friggin respect for language.
I remember when I first heard this song and absolute jaw to floor reaction because I was very into the whole "Heavy Metal" and "Grunge" sound but when I heard this song, without a doubt, it drove me to explore and broaden my taste in music. This movie scene brings back great memories that seem like only yesterday.
I'm a writer and an editor, and what I love most about this film is the way they're slowly and gently taking steps towards a sense of an ending. The film starts with Will's sister leaving him and then years go by and he looks so much like her now, and the casting is anything but a coincidence because by leaving him her music she left a part of her behind for him to absorb. It goes on to show us Will leaving home too and while everyone eventually leave, his journey begins with a promise to his mom that he's coming back. And all throughout the film he drifts further and further away from her as he grows up and she's left behind, waiting for him. Even losing your virginity is the end of something. And the fact is that Will cried after that night, it could be for a million reasons but I saw it as a reaction to sex as an act that forces you to Cross the line between innocence and a more mature version of yourself WHICH HE'S NOT READY FOR. The party proceeding this scene is a way for Russel to say goodbye and let go of the band (at the moment), this scene is basically the last time they're all together both in body and in spirit, everyone is a part of something in this moment. A part of someone, in this moment. And then they get to New York, and Penny is there at the restaurant and Mona Lisas and mad hatters Starts playing and this que is that sense of an ending they've been building up to for the past hour, and Will sees her running out and RUNS AFTER HER. SEPARATING himself, putting a DISTANCE between him and the rest of his friends, if that's what they ever were to begin with. And it's genius because the moment with Penny in the hotel is the first time he truly connected with someone since this tiny dancer moment on the bus. But he's the only one who will remember it, and when he goes back to the rolling Stones office he speaks on the phone and crying, and I truly felt that he was grieving for something. I don't know what it is yet, I'll have to watch it again but he was grieving, and he's a different person now, and he's lonely and sad and confused and he looks for his sister for comfort instead of turning to his mom, and his sister is back home but his mind and his heart are somewhere else completely, their roles have switched. It's so gentle and so quiet and so moving, just gorgeous. Just like Will. Gentle, quiet, brilliant, beautiful.
I love all of this and you said it so clearly and beautifully. For me, as an addict to alcohol, it brought me back to what it’s like to be a child. He didn’t care about the substance they were all intaking, he was experiencing life through their eyes, but in a sober mindset. It brought me to a point that made me believe that I can still do that too. Our inner child - is the ruler when we we actually listen to ourselves. And when we listen to ourselves, there in lies the magic
The song was not hit because radio stations avoided playing long songs. Elton also deliberately took a long time to sing the chorus in order to give it more drama
What's wild is that this movie was Kate's first real roll in a movie and she got a Golden Globe for it and her mother, Goldie Hawn, got an Oscar (Academy award) for her first real roll in a movie - "Cactus Flower". There must be something in the genes.......
This video reminds me of my time with my little gang of mates, they all dead now, gone far too young, I'm the last of us and I'm only 50. Shine on my dear brothers. Keep a space by the bar for me in heaven or in..... but not just yet ay......🙌♥️
Best scene in entire movie. Thanks for posting. As a boomer, I was a teenager when this song came out and it’s a song I always felt compelled to sing along with when it came on the radio.
If you listen to the original version by Elton John you'll notice a section of the song was edited out. This is the only full version in the entire world. Just a little fun fact.
This scene just opens up the water works on me , i guess its because i was there (not in the scene) but as a long haired 15yr old in 1973 .. when life was good ...
Just heard the song on the wireless and I had to come see the scene again. Its a beautiful movie. Like a fine wine. Gets better with age. Im sticking it in the diary to watch with my best friend on the weekend. Peace out everyone.
Thanks for liking this. We stopped making videos because we didn't think nobody liked what we were doing. Making these videos was never about views are making money, it was about a passion that we have and we really enjoyed making these videos.
This is a John Denver song. Tiny Dancer. It was about Me Natalie Helferty as a child aged 3 years old as the Queen of Canada and Royal Chieftain of Indians of America the Holy Grail of Christ's Second Coming.
I wonder if that is a better version of the song than the original. It leaves out that slightly awkward, tuneless stanza in the song ((But oh, how it feels so real...) which only seems to serve the purpose of needlessly delaying the onset of the chorus, which the ear is aching to hear. But I am really keen to hear other people's opinion.
Mmm I wouldn't call it tuneless.. it jumps into a different tune that mostly makes sense when the chorus arrives, but the most important is the change of rythm after the calm of the verses. This bridge being upbeat compared to the rest of the song enables them to slow down the rythm when he says "sloowly... sooooflty..." and makes the climax of the chorus. The chorus being delayed is a bit the whole concept of this song, as well as cutting songs is the whole concept of movie/ad soundtracks. Well you guessed my opinion at this point: that is a great piece of movie clip, but in no way is it a better version of the song than the original :).

I miss the seventies. Great decade. I'll see you all again in 1974.
One of the best film scenes of all time in my opinion.
Absolutely!
Having grown up in the 70's this scene is painfully perfect.
"I need to go home"
"You are home"
The look on his face when he realizes she right but he also has to go home.
This is one of my favorite movies! It doesn't matter how old it gets. It's a real friend 😜
