- NBC won't allow us to show you the actual video so this is the best we are going to get. This performance was recorded on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 1993. Ted Neeley performs the song Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar. Although not the full version of the song, this performance remains an all time fan favourite for many.
Ted Neely's is the best rendition because his voice captures all the complex emotions of a man facing a violent, brutal death he didn't ask for..a death ordered by his own father...the anger, the rage, the confusion, the fear....he captures all of it
Ted at his best. Interpretation and execution….11!
The GOAT. Plain and simple.
Extraordinary voice, Amazing Man, Ted Neeley is the best singer, even at 75 years old😍
Due homage should be paid to Ted Neeley for this ridiculously amazing performance... Thanks for posting
You're welcome. We hope we'll be able to share the actual video one day.
@@JCSZone would it be possible for you to send it to interested fans?
We recently uploaded the video in our Facebook group: facebook.com/watch/?v=417780975995488
This is my favorite performance of Ted's Gethsemane! His vocals soar and he just sounds amazing
I had just finished playing a run of JCS and fell in love with it. The farewell tour was coming to town in a couple of months and I was going. I had no idea who this Ted Neeley guy was, but I heard a commercial for the show advertising the original star of the movie. I got online and looked him up and this was the first clip I ever heard of him. Once I got past his creative approach to rhythm and he hit *that* note, my jaw fell. I've been a Tedhead ever since.
A few years later, I showed up for a rehearsal having no idea that the farewell tour was playing downstairs that day only. I heard "What's the Buzz?" and I thought that it was a soundcheck so I droppedmy stuff off and went out and stood in the wings backstage and realized it was a matinee! I listened almost through the end of the first act and when Ted finished for act one he came off of the stage and walked right up to me and introduced himself. We chatted briefly and he lived up to all of the stories I have heard about what a nice guy he is.
Think about this - both Ted Neely and Carl Anderson were both originally cast as understudies in the original stage production. Then went on to win the roles for the film version setting their place in musical theater history. For the 2002 Anniversary tour they both only agreed to do it if they both were in the production together.
I watched it the night it happened and I was screaming at the TV with overwhelmed emotion. You could feel the energy radiating across the country...live broadcast...!
No one has ever done it better imho. Loved him when I was 13 & the movie came out. He is so passionate.
hot damn!!! those high notes never left him! I was a kid around this time when i saw him do this role in san antonio. so glad to hear this live recording
Ted, you are the best!!! There's nobody like you!!!
One of the best renditions of this song. Maybe it's a matter of taste, but to me John Legend sounds like a school kid compared to this.
It's because Ted is using the correct techniques for this song
Arkturas Powers yes and that is correct! I would know I was playing drums on that tour and Ted was incredible every night!
@@tonydeaugustine588 my first vocal coach was his understudy, you'd probably dig my stuff, did a run as Judas a few years back at AACC, Ted is a beast.
You're totally right
John Legend delivered the worst vocals the role ever had the disservice of being subjected too
Can't beat the movie version. Set in isreal.
Nothing better, anywhere in the Universe.
In 1993 I saw the production in Boston, a great show and Ted was magnificent!
What a shame we can't see the performance. Ted is amazing.
Chills, 25 years later...
This gives me goosebumps every time! Magnificent. ❤🙏❤️
Ted's voice is funny, emotional, serious, and incredible.
He really sounds like an electric guitar during a sick solo when he hits those notes.
Such grit! Amazing version!
I've seen many people do Gethsemene and nobody can outdo Ted Neeley. Most times I'm so disappointed I could turn it off or walk out. Steve Balsamo is the only one who comes close although his performance is a sad version of Christ compared to Ted's angry version. We weren't there, but Jesus was sweating blood, a phenomenon that happens under extreme duress. Who knows what all was going through his mind?!
You really need to try Ian Gillan original version

@@blackcatsarenopussies Oh I have, in fact I have the album. I used to listen to my uncle drum to it. Ted puts more into it, imho.
@@blackcatsarenopussies lol, grew up on Ian's version, have the album.
Well, can't comment on personal taste🍺
This role is Neeley's. No one comes even close.
That’s intense! So beautiful!
Ted was the Best!!!
Ted IS and will always be THE BEST!
Dear beautiful Ted, God bless you and your loved ones. Thank you for enriching our lives with your
God-given gift and love xxx
I wish you much love and peace, always xxx
This video used to be up and I’ve looked it for it many times since. What a performance. I really wish NBC would let you put up the video. 😞
Agree. It was an amazing performance to watch--one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen.
JCS Thanks for sharing. I just came across this. I watch the 'Ted Neeley Scream' every so often and the G5 scream is amazing, so grateful I could hear the full song. Blessings! On the short bit of video it's great to see the guy on the white strat behind him soloing.
Thaaaank you so much for uploading this.... this is Ted singing on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Best G5 ever recorded!!!
This is the time when he was on tour with JCS and I saw him for the first time. Fantastic.
Wished there was a video of this performance he did on the show...still Ted is BEST!!
I think I was introduced to Neeley with the video of this performance. What a shame it was taken down. Luckily, there are many others. Stunning.
Love him!!!
I wish we had video
It is so sad we cannot see this video.........
Thank you for this!
Lastima que el vídeo de la actuación lo bajarán de UA-cam, porque estaba y era impresionante la interpretación de Neeley y el acompañamiento de la banda de Tonight es simplemente espectacular.
🔥🔥🔥🔥❤❤❤❤Bravo
Teddy the killer!
The original......
Camilo sesto the best and originally Spanish version Jesus Christ Superstar.
He is sick awesome. Check his rendition in UA-cam.
Geronimo Rauch
He's great too
Loved Ted Neely as Jesus Christ as he looked closer to how Jesus looked more like !
Patti Brooks How do you know what Jesus looked like?
Omg ㅜㅜ
Does Ted use "raspy" falsetto + distortion on his high notes?
Yeah, kind of. But it’s not entirely falsetto, it’s more a powerful head dominant mixed voice, kind of like Brian Johnson from AC/DC.
@@nilsisberg5445 Do you mean to "heady mix voice", right? More presence of head voice mixed with a little chest voice?
ABYZ Club Yes, exactly.
Definitely not falsetto, it’s a heady mix like you guys said, and he’s stated that the distortion is a natural ability
Except for those high notes. He's in falsetto on those. You can hear him transition from each of his voices many times. All the different mixtures are distinct from each other. He does it pretty often, and seamlessly. He would be a good singer to listen to if you wanted to learn, and be able distinguish, the different types of voices. Just gotta pay attention. When his voice changes, that's a different "voice".
🌟🌟🌟🌟👑👑👑👑👑🌟🌟🌟🌟
bettern than gillan allways
You''re crazy, his phrasing is behind the chord changes for the versus , and he doesn't have the power on the high notes that Gillan has. He''s still very good, but not in Gillan's class.
No question about it. He has so much feeling in his voice, packed with soul, rock and raw power. They are also two completely different singers technically.
@@inobetter7095 lol he totally destroys Gillan. Gillan sounds too generic and emasculated compared to him.
And he doesnt have as much as power as Gillan? Are you deaf?
Tbh, Gillan sounds like a woman when he scream.
100% true;)
2:33 skipping lyrics
I feel like it was to save time, since this was live for a tv show. But idk
Been Jesus twice aslong as Jesus..
I was in the London cast 98 with Steve Balsamo and i gotta tell you i prefere Steves Angelic aproach both vocally and physically but Yes this mans vocal longevity is stunning x
Steve is a bad copy that is all yeah Ian did it first but Ted will always own this role
Mr Legend is no legend. totally wrong casted !!! Gillan first, Neely second
EVD61 tube1961 Gillan is good on the scream, but Nelley has more feelings and s better scream! But Ian is an clear second place👍
Neeley was near 50 in this recording...Gillan wishes he could hold a candle to the performance and feel of this
Screaming the high note does not make the performance good
