I think they both are.I had never thought that anyone could do this song but Ted.I was so pleased to hear this incredible version a couple of years ago.Each has so much beauty in their voices,and each are such different actors in this play.Great,huh?

i started out with ian loved his version (so much so that i wore out 2 albums and a cassette tape listening to it. ) then along came ted neeley. i liked his version alot. but ian was still the best. then i heard this and was completely blown away by his beautiful voice and all the emotion he put into it. i know im not going to change anyones mind on this, but i think steve's version is the best ive ever heard. wish i could get a copy of the whole performance..

P.S.: 4:55 "I will drink your cup of poison..." my favourite part, his singing there is literally magnificent, and at 5:03 that high note on the word "cross" smash you to the ground... Always thought Ted Neely was the best you could get at singing this but Steve Balsamo just as good if not better. Good luck to the lads who are auditioning to be the new Jesus Christ Superstar as these two are excellent. Hope the next one to get the role has got as good a voice.
this version was recorded at Ahoy Rotterdam in Holland at june 2004. It was a big musicalshow with al the big Dutch performers from musicals and the great songs. Steve was their special secret gest. Holland met (i already knew Steve) the greatest singer of this time then. He also did a song from Poe, "immortal".

OMG! I don't know how I managed to miss this. I've never heard about Steve Balsamo before, though I'm a very old fan of Ted Neeley. And I really believed nobody could beat him as Jesus. I don't say that Steve beat Ted, they are too different to be compared, but this Jesus undoubtedly is as great as his '73 version. And I like their differences. I'm not talking about vocal characteristics, just about how I see these two versions of Christ. I think Neeley' s Jesus is more self-confident, a little aggressive and really really pissed:) He argues with God as his aqual, not even as a son, though he calls him "father". And he doesn't seem to accept his death, he agrees to it, because it's what he must do. And I really can't imagine him crying. On the contrary I see Steve's Jesus as a Son in the first place. A very gentle and vulnerable son. Who desperately needs his father's approval. He even starts the song with an almost childish voice. "Take this cup away, Dad, please, I don't like it, it hurts" Ah, poor baby! :) He gets more desperate than angry and at last comes to the very brink of a very real breakdown, trying to understand what he did wrong. Because he seems to think that it's he, who failed, that his own actions brought him to this point.That's why he accepts his death only when he realises that it wasn't he who's started all this. That he was a good son all along and to continue being a good son he has just to go and die. This is the turning point. I really love the moment when he rises to his feet. That looks almost heroic :) In '73 version the words were the same of course, but they didn't seem to affect Jesus' choices much. And I still don't see what did. Or was it just the sense of duty? And one more thing: Steve's version seems to be a classical illustration of 5 stages of grief. Sorry, too many words, but this is how I see it. This mini essay was just a reaction to Steve's wonderful performance. :) But I absolutely love both of them - Ted and Steve:)

I never really dug much into the Ted Neely's version, and this one is one is from a concert, not an actual performance of the musical (which you might have guessed since his clothes would've been quite anachronistic ;)) - but I love this one exactly because of the "humanity" - the vulnerability ... it's one of my favorite passages from the gospels because it shows us Jesus in despair. In the Bible, he asks his disciples/friends to stay awake because he's heartbroken and afraid. I think that this is portrayed very well in this video. And yes, then the dignity at the end - when he stands back up. Like he needed to work through these emotions to collect himself before facing his final challenge.

In movies they're not acting while singing - everything is recorded in a studio and then they film. Plus they get multiple takes for both recording and filming.

I think Ted Neeley did more acting than singing. Steve has a pure tenor voice with perfect, perfect vibrato.
