  • This was recorded during the beginning of the so called 'Farewell tour' in 2006. Ted Neeley stars once again as Jesus Christ. It has been said that Neeley had some problems with his voice on this night but he still manages to perform this incredible song with so much power that even his fellow cast and crew members couldn't keep their eyes dry. Enjoy this amazing performance!

@@eeemilu I’m not fervently religious but I’m Christian (started as a skeptic who grew in the faith).
Anyone can appreciate that this epitomises a human struggle, one that emanates from the depth of one’s soul. Jesus was human and suffered as most of us suffer. He knew he was destined to suffer. Even as a non believer I could relate to this.
One’s belief does not detract from his suffering. But it brings new meaning. The suffering is on behalf of mankind and done out of love so that we may forgive ourselves, and to give hope for the future. For a Christian, his death has more meaning and impact.

@@bradhuskers I think a lot of it was that Ian was just singing. He wasn't trying to act it ( except for the natural emotion he puts into the song) or worry about his blocking, camera angles etc ( in the movie but here also). And that high note sounds like a natural move within Ian"s voice rather than a note he is reaching for apart from the rest of the song. That shows even more when you watch the "Who sang the high note best in Gesthemene" video. Ian just blows them all away.

After reading the negative short sighted comments regarding this ONE performance, the self proclaimed "pros" who keep yacking about their so-called 20+yrs experience are missing the point. And that is that despite the dozens of younger & potentially "better" singers that have taken on the role of Jesus, none come close to capturing the ESSENCE of Ted Neely. I've seen at least 6 dudes' rendition of this piece & they leave me cold. Neely brings tears to my eyes to this day. Which is why people people clamored & begged for his return to the play in recent years, which he so graciously accepted. Ditto for Carl Anderson ( RIP). With all due respect to the technicians, Vocal teachers & conservatory training ain't shit without the soul that accompanies such gut wrenching renditions. I could go on...

Meeting Ted in person is an inspiring thing. I watched him stand and greet everyone in line as if they were his best friends. some of them absolutely beside themselves and in tears. Pouring out their stories of how he touched their lives. He hugged them, gave autographs, took selphies with them. Stayed until they were all gone, and I believe it's because he may be the nicest most genuine person I've ever met. He looked at me kind of quizzically and said I reminded him of a very dear friend of his and he could tell I had a kind soul. He has a presence.... you cannot explain....

And he feared for what was cominf to his life, but unger?? No.. He loved us all and he gave his life because he wanted too. I loved this interpretation, but the writer of the lyrics needed to understand Jesus, so he wrote what hw thought, but Jesus loves us ununderstandingbly.. Sorry for the word, hehe. Maybe he was having problems with his voice during the tour; i don't know. But there's a documentary about this production, and all throughout just about everyone (including Neeley) said that Neeley didn't sing Gethsemane until opening night, and everyone was anxious to hear it. I think what we're seeing is more their reactions to finally hearing him sing.

Yes he had some difficulties with his voice that night, you can hear a slight break in his voice at the end of the first high note, though he saves it well. Apart from that he had not performed this song in a couple of years and chose not to rehearse the song either so this was the first time his fellow cast and crew members heard it.

For me Ted Neeley will always be the Jesus for Jesus Christ Superstar. I remember when it first came out, I had listened to the concert was liked it okay, but wasn’t in love with it. So when the movie came out, I wasn’t interested. However, I had an out-of-town guest who wanted to see it. So we went. Oddly, she didn’t like it much, but I loved it. I’ll bet I saw it a dozen times while it was in the theatre, usually in the early afternoon where I might be the only person there. It was Ted in that particular scene that kept bringing me back. I am not particularly religious, but Gethsemane was so powerful, I was drawn to it over and over. Ted was and is (even with some vocal issues) magnificent.

Sometimes I'd rather hear someone sing with PASSION and hit some notes a little less than perfectly but make me BELIEVE he is that person. I watch this and am able to believe that is Jesus singing right there.
Saw a tour production of Phantom of the Opera in Pittsburgh earlier this year with Chris Mann as the Phantom and he never made me believe he was the Phantom at any point. I never felt any passion in the performance.
That's what makes this a great performance, not the technicality of it, but the passion and power.
