I saw and met Ted Neeley when I was 11. He asked me if I wanted to be an apostle when I grew up. I didn’t dare say no. No one has ever played Jesus like him nor never will.
Nearly 20 years ago it was supposed to be the farewell tour. Thanks God, Neely is still singing and he looks and sound awesome in 2024. He still nails it as has done for over half a century.

Chills. He may be a lot older now, but Ted Neeley still brings it and has the world-weariness and anguish needed for this song. I was in tears like the cast backstage.
I was 13 years old when the movie first came out and Ted Neely was my first crush. I had his picture on my wardrobe mirror. He moved me so much, I became a Christian. This performance is even better. What strength and conviction. What an amazing man.
Even if he is older in this version, i keep watching this video, just cuz the passion is still there and is even higher than in the 1973. Ted is a master, He is something else.
Wow. Just wow. I've heard more recent singers sing this song and liked and thought they were quite good. Until I listened to this version and this guy delivered every note and word with such skill and passion, it really made me feel this song in a way I'd never felt before. Truly wonderful.
yep he is OG. i definitely recommend watching his original 1973 performance of gethsemane in the JCS movie. it wasn’t just a “performance” but truly raw and real. it is one of the most heartbreaking and chilling performances of arguably anything ever
Meeting Ted in person is an inspiring thing. I watched him stand and greet everyone in line as if they were his best friends. some of them absolutely beside themselves and in tears. Pouring out their stories of how he touched their lives. He hugged them, gave autographs, took selphies with them. Stayed until they were all gone, and I believe it's because he may be the nicest most genuine person I've ever met. He looked at me kind of quizzically and said I reminded him of a very dear friend of his and he could tell I had a kind soul. He has a presence.... you cannot explain....
I saw this Farewell Tour LIVE... I knew that I was witnessing greatness... I am still in awe, every time I hear him sing... Beautiful and incredible... 😎🙏
is it me or does the looks on the casts faces just show total admiration for old Ted Neely still nailing the hugh notes in this song? its heart warming
This was part of a longer documentary of the show. Offstage cast are reacting that way because it was their first time seeing him perform this song. He refused to perform it in rehearsals because after the passing of Carl Anderson (who played Judas in the movie with him as well as on other JC Superstar tours) he didn't want to sing it without him. He saved the first time singing it again for the performance itself.
I watch this over and over and over and cry every time...still in love with Ted neeley since first seen back in the day. No better jesus, seen loads...he is jesus!
Was so lucky to see him perform on this tour! To think that the performance in the film so many years ago would become a life long work of such excellence! Bravo!!!!

I have Loved this movie, album & dvd since 1973, always moved by his incredible voice, the lyrics are beautiful as well, amazed how Ted Neeley can actually scream and hold that high note. My favorite movie ever !
Brilliant. Captures all the complex emotions inherent in humanity's questions for a God, who if he does exist, has left us to figure things out for ourselves. Performed with a great empathy that comes out straight from his heart through his voice. Had to wipe away tears before I wrote this.
Absolutely, I come back to performance again and again. It gives me the same energy as Catherine Coulson in twin peaks season 3 giving her final scenes. It’s just so raw
I cried too. What a performance! I loved the 1973 film and it was so incredible to watch him sing again. Just would have loved to have seen this live x
Lambert Ramirez I am crying right now as I write this. I am not crying because I am sad. His voice moves me. I am actually recording Jesus Christ superstar that's being set for June 4 for next Sunday.
I went to the play before I really knew Jesus. I know now and can let myself feel what He did for me/us by dying on the cross. What a merciful Lord we have!!! Totally undeserving!
Yeah he had problems with his voice. His struggle makes this performance. If you can show me a more gritty and inspirational version of this song I’ll show you a unicorn.
@@undead_mole6809 in 2006 Ted Neeley was 63 yrs old.. Camilo Sesto in 77 was 31 yrs old.. Not to be compared :) he was a great singer indeed, and his death a great loss
@@alejaandrooo1 You're right but I was talking about this particular performance. Anyway, it seems to me that Camilo Sesto gave an intensity to this song than any other singer. It is a personal opinion.
After reading the negative short sighted comments regarding this ONE performance, the self proclaimed "pros" who keep yacking about their so-called 20+yrs experience are missing the point. And that is that despite the dozens of younger & potentially "better" singers that have taken on the role of Jesus, none come close to capturing the ESSENCE of Ted Neely. I've seen at least 6 dudes' rendition of this piece & they leave me cold. Neely brings tears to my eyes to this day. Which is why people people clamored & begged for his return to the play in recent years, which he so graciously accepted. Ditto for Carl Anderson ( RIP). With all due respect to the technicians, Vocal teachers & conservatory training ain't shit without the soul that accompanies such gut wrenching renditions. I could go on...
+soulquarian69 You are right. Neeley was in Roma and Milano last year. I was there. He still is the best PERFORMER, Gethsemane is not a bare song and a good singer is not enough. I met Neeley after the show, he met fans (for free) after the show up until 3AM (He was 71 years old) and kindly talked and took pictures with them. Thanks Ted !
Very impressive! What an interpretation by Ted Neely. He is truly in the skin of Christ. His voice is sublime. I have the impression that this pain takes him through reflection to cross hell and I feel it in his wonderful voice. Cold in the heart. This song always destroys me. The saddest song in the world for me but what a pleasure to the ear. I cry!!!!!!
The maturity in his voice makes this performance even more powerful than the original for me. Let's not forget that Jesus at 30-odd would have been considered well into middle-age back in 30CE!
He wouldn't average life span was low because od infant mortality, once you lived passt first five years you had reasonable chances to live to old age. For comparison, average life expectancy during industrial revolution was 15 years. Sorry, I couldn't resist 😁
The original version always moved me. But this has left me speechless. I never thought that a second version of the same artist could reach these levels. It has managed to move me to the depths of my soul. I filled my eyes with tears.
@@bradhuskers I think a lot of it was that Ian was just singing. He wasn't trying to act it ( except for the natural emotion he puts into the song) or worry about his blocking, camera angles etc ( in the movie but here also). And that high note sounds like a natural move within Ian"s voice rather than a note he is reaching for apart from the rest of the song. That shows even more when you watch the "Who sang the high note best in Gesthemene" video. Ian just blows them all away.
So brilliant! Brought tears to my eyes.. so sad.. so tragic.. He easily glides from one emotion to another.. Was it fear? Was it anger? Sadness? Submission?? Whatever it is was brilliantly executed. We salute you, Mr. Ted Neely!! Bravo!!!
I saw him last night in Rome (10 years later). It was absolutely breathtaking.... He brought tears to my eyes. Mr Neely I do not care how old you are, I take my hat off to you and your performance!!
Ted you made me cry, as I cried 50 years ago when I listened to you and saw you for the first time. We have grown old, but your voice, your cry has remained as pure and clear as it once was. Thank you for the strong emotion you gave me.
Ted Neely was born for this role! Each time I listen to him, I sing with him and I cry and I feel pain and despair and sacrifice myself until I change my mind. BRAVO, TED !!!
Every time I hear Ted sing this powerful song it sends shivers down me, this is the most amazing song ever! Seeeing the emotions of the actors back stage is very touching!
I actually had the opportunity to play his part in a local theater production of JCS and got to meet him. He was gracious and funny in our conversation and signed my CD with " we are going to do this together for the future"
I had the incredible good fortune to witness Mr. Neeley perform this in person. He rendered to tears then...and he still reduces me to a weeping fool now. Thank-you so much for presenting. Experience of a lifetime.
This is out of this world, this is utterly not possible. You only witness this bone-chilling performance because God Himself gave him the talent to be so awesome.
I do not consider myself a "Christian" per say, though I believe absolutely that Jesus was an important healer, activist, teacher. I am not anti-Christian at all. That being said, I am 49. My introduction to Jesus was seeing this movie/musical when I was 4 years old. I memorized every song, every scene.. It broke my heart. Music is my language. This man is incredible, no other has ever sung this like he has and does. Every inflection of so many emotions dead on. I also think this telling of Jesus as a human being is very important. As corny as it may seem, I truly believe that Ted Neeley "channels" the spirit of Christ when he performs, this one in particular had me crying. So powerful. Timeless.
Small Fry your confidence in your own reality compared to others seems very scary. I grew up going to a Christian school then the same with college. I used to be devout in those days. The way you speak of religion is arrogant and almost radical. The way you've commented seems to show a very brittle perception. I suggest using more empathy which wlll allow your mind to be more healthy and limber. I do not agree or disagree with these beliefs but that's the point.
Love it so much, always brings me to tears. Met him and Carl Anderson backstage in Vancouver Queen E theatre. With my wife who was awaiting a double lung transplant. Ted was so special and caring for her and Carl too. Will never forget it, thank you Ted, you changed me, and made me understand that Jesus was a human like us all and had so many human feelings even knowing what he knew it was so hard.
Maybe he was having problems with his voice during the tour; i don't know. But there's a documentary about this production, and all throughout just about everyone (including Neeley) said that Neeley didn't sing Gethsemane until opening night, and everyone was anxious to hear it. I think what we're seeing is more their reactions to finally hearing him sing.
Yes he had some difficulties with his voice that night, you can hear a slight break in his voice at the end of the first high note, though he saves it well. Apart from that he had not performed this song in a couple of years and chose not to rehearse the song either so this was the first time his fellow cast and crew members heard it.
I heard the Spanish version with Camilo Sesto when I was about 12 or 13.... i am now 56 and every year, for good friday, I have made it a ritual to listen to he entire show... I go see it every chance I get and I did have the opportunity to see Ted Neely with Dennis DeYoung at Madison Square Garden back in the 90's.... I am not very religious but the music just makes my day...thanks you for sharing this video!!!

Even if he is older in this version, i keep watching this video, just cuz the passion is still there and is even higher than in the 1973. Ted is a master, He is something else.
1970
@@johnbednarczyk201 nope. 1973 is when it came out.
Wow. Just wow. I've heard more recent singers sing this song and liked and thought they were quite good. Until I listened to this version and this guy delivered every note and word with such skill and passion, it really made me feel this song in a way I'd never felt before. Truly wonderful.
This guy is The OG
Of course, he's the original. This song is just made for him and nobody else could do it better
yep he is OG. i definitely recommend watching his original 1973 performance of gethsemane in the JCS movie. it wasn’t just a “performance” but truly raw and real. it is one of the most heartbreaking and chilling performances of arguably anything ever

He has a presence.... you cannot explain....
justmissj what a blessing. I would love to see him in person. But I think I'd be a emotional wreck lol. He's so incredible!
justmissj wow that's incredible. Sounds awesome. Beautiful person.
I agree.. I met him in a restaurant 25 years ago.. was in Columbus Ohio for Superstar.. I was touched at how genuine he was.. very kind..
I saw superstar 20 years ago I had to remind myself he wasn't Jesus when I stood in line
justmissj wow! Your comment brought tears to my eyes! How beautiful. 💜💜
He taught me about Jesus when I was young..couldn’t understand in Catholic Church..thank god for Ted Neely and Carl Anderson, thank god for JCS..
I saw this Farewell Tour LIVE... I knew that I was witnessing greatness... I am still in awe, every time I hear him sing... Beautiful and incredible... 😎🙏
빵송국에서 넘어왔다 알고리즘 좋네....
is it me or does the looks on the casts faces just show total admiration for old Ted Neely still nailing the hugh notes in this song? its heart warming
Not just you...I think it’s marvelous how pumped the rest of the cast get like that! REAL support!
It's not just the high note. Not at all. It's the extreme emotion he puts into the phrases and lines.
Moved, awed, speechless, crying. The one girl fanning her eyes to dry them. How do you go on stage after that?
the best ever. absolutely fantastic. the one and only "jesus" who not only hits the notes, but feels the emotion. wow.
I watch this over and over and over and cry every time...still in love with Ted neeley since first seen back in the day. No better jesus, seen loads...he is jesus!
His co-stars freaking out when he hits those long high notes fills my heart with such joy. Tears and chills Ted, my god.
평생의 내공이 느껴진다.. 언제 들어도 감동 철철..
The faces of the young actors speak more than thousand words... Ted still rocks and touches the hearts of people listening to him... respect \m/
The79Arioch yes!
Was so lucky to see him perform on this tour! To think that the performance in the film so many years ago would become a life long work of such excellence! Bravo!!!!
I saw it 3 times live. Did you see it with Carl Anderson as well? Both of them on stage together is the experience of a lifetime.

이건 눈물이나네 다른거보고는 잘 부른다 느끼지만 이건 듣는데 중반 절규부터 가슴이 찢어지는게 그대로 느꺄지네요 겟세마네 부른 배우중 최곤듯
The "What YOU started" moment... with him suddenly looking up, in sync with the guitar chord... thrills down my spine. (5:28)
See this performance hundred times, never see this detail before. Thamk you 😊
Unbelievable how much emotion he puts into this performance. Bravo
I saw the movie Jesus Christ Super Star when it was first released and to this day it still gives me chills particularly when Ted sings. Wow!❤
This moved me twice as hard when he sang so raw in his advanced age. You can tell he felt those words personally.
Absolutely, I come back to performance again and again. It gives me the same energy as Catherine Coulson in twin peaks season 3 giving her final scenes. It’s just so raw
Breathtaking! impossible to listen to this rendition without being deeply moved!
Agree. I cried
Great. Now how's the June 4 event? Hope everything went OK
I went to the play before I really knew Jesus. I know now and can let myself feel what He did for me/us by dying on the cross. What a merciful Lord we have!!! Totally undeserving!
This performance was so powerful. I was uncontrollably sobbing through 2/3rds of the song.
Yeah he had problems with his voice. His struggle makes this performance. If you can show me a more gritty and inspirational version of this song I’ll show you a unicorn.
Watch the spanish version of Camilo Sesto, it's beautiful.
Search for "camilo sesto getsemani" on UA-cam and watch the first video that comes out. I will be waiting for that unicorn.
It is a personal opinion.
m.ua-cam.com/video/-oh-PbWFIYY/v-deo.html :) listen
+soulquarian69
You are right.
+soulquarian69 I have to disagree. No one sang this song better than Ian Gillan - the original 1971 soundtrack recorded with him is supreme!
+soulquarian69 I agree completely; didn't know that Carl Anderson had passed. Sad, indeed. Did some good jazz singing, also.
saw him live in groningen, the netherlands last jan. it was a true privilege indeed. agree with every word you said
Please, go on. I agree completeley...
Ian Gillan destroys ted.
Ian's got better overall tone.
More power.
No contest.
Eh, I liked the younger version. Sounds like a drunk here.

For a guy who was having issues with his voice that night, he still put his all into this performance! Thats an actor/singer right there.
I have no words. How incredible is this?? No one compares to Ted Neeley, truly THE Superstar JC.
So brilliant! Brought tears to my eyes.. so sad.. so tragic.. He easily glides from one emotion to another.. Was it fear? Was it anger? Sadness? Submission?? Whatever it is was brilliantly executed. We salute you, Mr. Ted Neely!! Bravo!!!
No but no one will ever cement this role better than this wonderful man named Ted Neely. 🙏❤
Absolute best!!
Out of this world performance Ted. So moved. Thanks a million. X
I saw him last night in Rome (10 years later). It was absolutely breathtaking.... He brought tears to my eyes. Mr Neely I do not care how old you are, I take my hat off to you and your performance!!
Ted Neely, what a powerful voice you gave to us and such a great memory for us all. Thank you.
Love this version. He's the best!
One of the most perfect and important videos of Broadway history tbh
I derive all my my understanding of what Jesus went thru from Superstar. I've listened to it since 1972 and it's changed my life forever..

Tears still burst out uncontrollably.
This man!
Thank you for the music, Sir.
Never fails to move me to tears 😢❤
There are no words to describe this performance, but unworldly come to mind!
I'm a 60 year old man and tears are streaming down my face. Watched him sing this 50 years ago.
I actually had the opportunity to play his part in a local theater production of JCS and got to meet him. He was gracious and funny in our conversation and signed my CD with " we are going to do this together for the future"
30 odd years later this man doing this song still gives me goose bumps, he is like a vintage bottle of wine only gets better with age
Product Peeks god is an illusion. There are hundreds of gods claimed. All with their own "miracles".
Timeless.
@Small Fry you're going to be wrong on that. You're going to be wrong on that. Christ is already here and ready for the second round.
Those who deny the cross will know no Heaven.
노래를 잘하고 못하고를 떠나서 전세계에서 가장 예수에 가깝게 표현한 배우라고 생각됨.... 오히려 독백부분이 진짜 진하게 느껴진다...

I cry every time I listen to this performance, with zero shame.
This performance puts me to tears each time I see it. What an amazing man Ted Neeley is. Best Jesus ever.
Maybe he was having problems with his voice during the tour; i don't know. But there's a documentary about this production, and all throughout just about everyone (including Neeley) said that Neeley didn't sing Gethsemane until opening night, and everyone was anxious to hear it. I think what we're seeing is more their reactions to finally hearing him sing.
i heard he have some illnes about his voice
@@jesusfck8117 I can hear it yes.
But it works with this particular pieces mood anyway.
Plus, he still hit hits that WAAAAHHHHHYYYYYYYYYY.
Yes he had some difficulties with his voice that night, you can hear a slight break in his voice at the end of the first high note, though he saves it well. Apart from that he had not performed this song in a couple of years and chose not to rehearse the song either so this was the first time his fellow cast and crew members heard it.
