Ted Neeley has been Jesus for longer than Jesus was Jesus.
Good point! Lol
Closer to twice as long now!
HaHaHa…… that's great! I'm sure even Jesus is crackin'-up!
I was thinking the same when he sang the line " I tried for 3 years"
There's the saying Jesus wept
But after your post
Jesus is Clearly laughing 😃
I'm sure the Lord loved this response
Ted Neeley doesn't sing this song....He lives it! An incredible performance.
@oldmodelarmy4402 - and that's the difference between him and the others, in my opinion. I've watched several UA-cam videos of others singing Gethsemane and as good as their voices are, they don't "live" the part, as you say. Ted lives the part of Jesus, it's in his eyes and facial expressions, and of course his wonderful voice.
Yes, he lives it- exactly!
I just heard an awesome cover of this song by Dan Vasc. I grew up with Ted Neeley and adored his performance. But the cover I watched last night is even *more* powerful and emotional, IMO. Just search the words Dan Vasc Gethsemane.
He also recently released a phenomenal cover of Amazing Grace.
@@Vmurph I just "discovered" Dan Vasc the other day, my first experience of hearing him was in the duet of "Kiss From A Rose" with Violet Orlandi - fabulous! I then scrolled through his videos, listened to a few, then came to Gethsemane - I was reluctant to listen, as I have thought since the film was new that Ted Neeley was utter perfection singing that song, and that others (no matter how good their voices) just didn't quite match him. Well, Dan beats them all, except for Ted of course, but I would love to see Dan in a stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
He IS Jesus.
Most 78 year olds can’t kneel down and get up again never mind doing it while singing one of the most difficult songs to perform ever….Ted Neeley ‘Hold my beer’…
I believe Mick Jagger can.
I tottaly agree!
맞아...무릎 펴는게 가장 힘든 일이지
@@jolanthevandongen8660
믹 재거의 특기는 무릎이 아닙니다.
바로 거기입니다
@@jolanthevandongen8660 but Mick Jagger couldn’t sing Gethsemene like Ted can 😉
I cried when I first heard Ted singing this song when I was 11 y.o. back on 1973, now that I turned 61 I still cry the same
my mother introduced me to the jesus christ superstar musical on vhs when i was 9, when i was 12 i watched it again and now im nearly 30 its still tradition to watch it once per year.
I was 14 years old, when we went with school, to “JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR”. And till today, I’m still in love, with that musical and the music, and Ted Neely, will always special to me..♥️
@@itsme4693 flor me to
There is still so much power in his voice and nobody can do that song the way Ted Neely does it
ДА!
There’s a non auto tuned version from the audience floating around YT, and for 78 he sounds incredible.
Yes, camilo sesto
Camilo sesto, el mejor y único
78 years old and still cranking it. Ted Neeley is the absolute best.
"I was inspired, now I'm tired" hits different coming from a 70 year old
As does "feels like 90", which he probably does after a performance! Bless.
It really does. A lifetime in that phrase. He’s a legend.
I thought the same thing. Very powerful.
He's 80 today. I know you wrote that a year ago, but he was still 79. :-)
He seems like 30. GOAT
Unbelievable. 50 years of hearing you do this, and you can still stir up emotions. Thank you , and much love to you, Ted!
Ted Neely is synonymous with the portrayal of Jesus Christ. At the opening line the emotions of old start flooding back. I am moved close to tears. Such is the beauty of the melody and lyrics in capturing the anguished angst of the man, Jesus Christ, condemned to die. The voice changes with age and so, too, the ability to hit the high notes. A seasoned trouper, Neely knows how to navigate the shortcomings with inflections and pitch nuances.
I can't imagine the emotional toll 50 years of doing this has had on him. He has earned a place a place in heaven for sure.
Como Camilo sesto nadie
When I first heard Ted 50 years ago, I cried during this song. I still cry today🙏🏻God has blessed you Ted
Mr. Neeley: we couldn’t ask this much from any other man. Thank you. Honor to you.
His crying at the end got me. GOAT
The world is a better place as long as Ted Neeley is still singing!
Nobody can do this song like Ted Neeley. The way he performs it makes me cry every time.
You think so...Ian Gillan was the best voice
Your performance is just as powerful now as it was 50 years ago. Love you, Ted.
Certainly!
@@guadalupecorchado5461 He is BEYOND FANTASTIC ! & I'm not a religious person.
Im not a religious person, but this hits me more than anything, i love Ted.
You can be spiritual without being religious.
Same dude. Jesus Christ Superstar is a near masterpiece.
Same here.
@@42ayla Exactly!
I prefer Ian Gillan's original version
He is still awesome. That whole movie moved me more than I can explain. 1975 is the year or 76. I can still watch it. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ted Neely's voice still has the power to draw tears.
Nearly 80 and he still chills me up. His face expressions... his modulation of voice.... I'm very impressed.
*THANK YOU TED*
Ted Neeley is a treasure in human form. I’m not a religious person, but his lifelong dedication to his faith and this role is really something which we should all aim to emulate. Really an astonishing man.
It's not just about the singing. It's about the performance. The acting. Bravo!
Ted has the most beautiful soul. I saw him in Rotterdam in 2017 for my 50th birthday present, he looked straight at me whist singing Gesthemane, it still brings tears to my eyes and gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
Ok
He's an absolute beautiful person with a lovely heart. I've met him a few times and he remembered me each time. He kissed my hands and for a moment I felt as I was in the presence of Jesus himself 💖💖💖
@@jerzi_gurlhe's definitely a blessed soul
At 78 he's better in this role than many half or even 1/3 his age. I wish I could see the meeting of the source material and the actor who best exemplified the role for longer than the Source walked this earth. I am in awe. Again and again and again Ted Neeley stuns me with his voice, emotion and heart.
correct. just saw the 50th anniversary national tour and the jesus was like a lackadaisical teenager. no charisma. no passion. no depth. yeah neelys high notes are hard auto tuned here. doesn’t matter. it’s not the accuracy of the voice that matters. it’s the delivery, the presence, the emotional power.
I listened to you with my group of students on December 1st 2018 in Milan: everything was wonderful but in "Gethsemane" you elevated us to another dimension. Forever, thank you❤
It's not just the amazing voice, it is the true feeling and inspiration that comes out. Thank you Ted Neeley !
The emotion Ted puts into this song is just amazing. Any fan of his or JCS cannot fail to be moved by his performance of it.
Fully agree!
WTF!!! I am more than impressed! I am serious I can’t believe what I’ve heard! He is a miracle! Ted sounds better then ever! What a voice, what a performance ✌🏽
Still love, love, LOVE Ted Neeley after all these years! Whenever I hear him sing "Gethsemane," it gives me chills! Dude is still BRINGING IT at age 78! Love you, Ted!! :)
I do, too
Every year at Easter I go Ted Neeley hunting to hear him sing this wonderful song. And, every year I'm reminded at how he has chosen to live his life & portray God's gift to the world. It humbles me. Ted? if you read this, thank you so much for all your performances of this song & "Jesus Christ Superstar" as a whole. Bless you.
There is some auto tune involved in this, but you gotta give this guy a break. He's been hitting that G5 since 30 years old. He's currently 78, and he's killing it like always.
This wasn't a G5 and he didn't hit it.
@@Shaki123 Bro, are you illiterate? I said "there was some auto tune involved", obviously he can't hit such a high note at his age, but this performance was still good. Try hitting at least a F5 at the age of 78. You won't.
ua-cam.com/video/6ms1pXi9g_k/v-deo.html
Here's the unautotuned live version. Still killing it!
tbh, I think that this would be even more powerfull as a whole if we heard the longnote unaltered. the start is already some of the best and it would go onto humanize the character
E: I mean, as in hearing what they could actually sing! I want to hear humane jesus strugling. the voice is so mature and weary for the rest and that would've broken me in just the right way
🍃🕊ZDT, right there with you. I was there in the 1970's. The Love with which he sings is an undeniable gift.
Gift. Just a word. Ted Neeley will forever sing with Pure Joy. Words don't work here there just isn't any. It's all feeling, knowing. I don't know. I'm glad God made him.
Absolutely amazing, hearing the high note was amazing, now I have to watch the movie again. Thank you Ted
You didn't notice the autotune and delay? Come on, Ted doesn't need that shit.
@@swiftlessons You didn't notice that you asked a question that was already answered?
Come on, we don't need that negative shit.
Did you come here to criticize other folks opinions or to enjoy Ted Neeley performing Gethsemane Live in Boston? I don't recall setting a reminder notification for something called "Lisa Coven • 16 hours ago" although I sure feel like I must have. I'm pretty sure you're supposed to be critical of the performance art, not the other commenters.
Do you feel like you've gained an inch now?? Respect you've lost for sure. 🙋♀️
Just sayin'.. 🤷♀️
I remember watching the vcs tape until the tape stretched when I was 5 years old
@@swiftlessons It wasn't really auto tune. I interpated it as some sort of creative decision to make itmore electronic sounding, possibly for it to be more aetherial. Granted, it was probably added because he needs it if he wants to reach that note. Still, I'd rather he just sung it lower.
Amen
This is effing unbelievable......Ted Neely , The best ever! Goosebumps all over, this man will never be surpassed.
This song always moves me to tears
At that age you hittin it high ...Amen!!
nobody does it but Ted and only Ted...There can be only one!!!
No one can do it but Ted! ❤ This is so amazing!
I met Ted in Vancouver during a screening of the film. What a nice man. He took time to meet and speak to everyone. Hugs all around and an ovation when he hit the high note in the movie. What an honor.
Ted ....yo moriré escuchando este tema. No hay otra persona que lo haya interpretado mejor que UD. Te Amo Ted. Dios te bendiga!!!
His expressions are incredible. He was made for this very special role. Lord bless Ted Neeley ♥️
Ted has always put his soul into his singing, fantastic
Phenomenal performance! This man is incredible, even after all these years! I love you Ted Neely and have for 50 years!
my mom had that album when we were little, then on 8 track. He set the bar so high, no one can ever reach it. I saw that perfomance, it was earth shattering. what a wonderful career.
I was 13 in 1973 when I first saw this in the theater the year it was released. I left that theater a different person, it left a mark I am grateful never left me. It doesn't matter how many times and how many different shows I've watched and heard, Ted Nealy singing Gethsemane always elicits The Holy Spirit and I am cleansed with my own tears every single time. Praise be to Our Lord and Savior!
I was 2 but we watched it every year at Easter and even though am not a Christian does not stop me adoring this show. I am glad you have anriched life may you be truly happy
I was 15 at the time....such a fantastic musical...
My parents never went to church although they did believe in God as I did. At a young age this movie/musical had an effect on me that I believe no church could have matched.
I was 6 and feel the same way you do.. Thank you for your post!
Beautifully expressed on behalf of a generation who experienced the film in the same way. In '73 I was 20.
I was 14 in 73 when I saw this in the theater. I love the whole movie and the music was so meaningful. I am 62 and still listen to Jesus Christ Superstar. My favorite musical ever.
I've watched this amazing man perform this soliloquy since I was 13 years old, and it left an undeniable mark on me and 50 years later, it still stuns me today how mesmerizing he sounds performing it. He truly was born to play this part! Bravo Ted, Bravo!!!
Great Opera. Timeless. Rock was created for this Opera. ❤🌍
Thank you, Mr. Neeley, for continuing to move and inspire us with your voice. Stay safe and well, and God bless!
I can't believe I missed this performance, just 30. min from my home! One of the most powerful songs ever, and no one owns it like Ted, at any age! Thank you, Ted and please come back!
Wow! Superb. Ted hasn't lost his passion!
I have seen Ted Neely twice on stage for Superstar and I have met him once. He is not only talented but he is a nice and very good man.
I still get chills listening to him sing this absolutely beautiful song
Getting drunk and listening to this... I love you Ted
I loved him 1973 and I still love him
what a voice
I sing too the M.M.Songs and I sing it every time in Church
Still brings tears to my eyes. Amazing voice then & now. You must be drained every time you sing this song as you put 1000% into it. Bravo Ted!
Grew up watching the '73 film, saw him live in 2008, and the man is still crushing it in 2021, nothing but respect!
How anyone can watch this without bawling is beyond me. So moving. I love Ted!!!
He is singer who represent in the heaven
From the core of my being, Ted Neeley's high notes still give me the absolute thrills!
Still getting goosebumps !
Brilliant Ted! Goodness ...what emotion. Magnificent performance. I think Jesus would be proud of you and also the honourable life you have lived. Thank you from Australia 🦘 Ted.
This man lives this song! Incredible, famous, heartbreaking💔😢👏👏👏
Few UA-cam videos are captivating. I watched every moment, open mouthed.
INCREDIBLE. His age is superfluous. amazing amazing performance.
Still truly amazing may God bless this man he's 78 and still got it he's been doing this long time wow his voice is even more powerful now then when he was a young man 🙏 ❤
I have goosebumps from start to finish of this performance
Nobody can sing this song the way Ted Neeley can sing it and with so much emotion. An incredible performance by an amazing singer.
When JCS came out in 1972, many Christians didn't know what to make of it, but now it has been apart of my Good Friday tradition since then!
Try 1970
Me too every year ever since 1973 I never get tired of it.
@@bobbyflay7217 I was talking about the movie . . I meant what I said!!!
@@MsDana-mo9fp never said what you meant. I am reiterating there no one better than Ian Gillan and i meant that!!!
So true! My mother recalls being offended in the theatre as a child. Now she cherishes the film.
I've been listening to him sing this song for 50 years and it always brings tears to my eyes. Great Ted,
And at age 77 he still does this so good amazing
Hes 78
Ted is the KING of this musical. No one will ever sing it better than he does!! ❤️
Wow. I first saw the 1970's Jesus Christ Superstar film earlier this year. It was made before i was born, but captivated me. I'm not religious in the traditional sense, but i was moved particularly by the performances of Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson and Yvonne Elliman. Ted Neeley is now almost 80 years of age and can still sing live like this!!! 👏👏👏Brave, Sir - amazing.
Ted Neeley was absolutely great in the film and can still slay it now. However, to me, Carl Anderson was beyond stupendous and even outsang and outperformed Ted. He was gone far too soon. RIP Carl.
After all of these years, I can still be moved by this song. Thank you, Ted! Because of You, JCS has been a part of my Holy Week Celebration since 1973. I'm 67 yrs. old now, soon to be 68 years.
Wow!!! I’ve cried all these years when I hear this most powerful song, and his heart is right there ❤
Ted Neely is the GOAT.
FANTASTIC!!! What a GIFT!!! Thank YOU ALL of you! TN 👍🙏🦋
He still gives such a moving rendition of this amazing song!!!
It gives me shivers every time. Just beautiful. God bless Ted Neeley and his iconic voice.
I saw the movie-musical in 1976, then a live performance in San Diego in 2012, still with Ted Neeley. I had chills as he came on stage and started singing. This piece has influenced my life more than any teacher could.
I have to listen to this all the time if I have a bad day Times I just want to cry and can not but when I watch you Ted it gets to me every time
Wow!! I am in awe Mr Neeley as much as when I saw you or the first time over 50 years ago in the movie. Bravo!
This is one of my favorite songs to sing! Ted Newley is still rocking it!
beautiful Ted thanks soooooooooooooo much of this old beaurty.
Wow, how moving is this....amazing performance Mr. Neeley. Thank you.

Beautiful, and what a voice at his age and any age.
Such a superb artist, I just love this artist, not many like him nowadays
Wow, Ted, that was so intense.
Just WOW! The years in between just add to the wowness of this. So apt. So meaningful. Still unsurpassed.
Still amazing 🥲 gives me shivers every time! God Bless you always
Ted Neeley is the king of jesus christ superstar and will forever be!!! There will be nobody else 👑👑👑👑
I was seven in 1973 when the movie came out. It left an impact on me then. This song still sends shivers down my spine. Love the way Ted sings!
I will never tire of your ever-changing while you're aging versions of this song. You continue to find and give meaning to words and continue to bless the world with your awesome talent.
I'll never get enough of this, Ted. Huge fan of the movie. In fact I watched it twice over the holidays.
I’m so happy I saw him in the JCSS revival with Dennis DeYoung as Pilot. Ted Neeley still does something to me. No one else could ever play this role as far as I’m concerned.
A REALLY REALLY WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE !
Thank you, Ted Neely !
