How to Build the WORLDS BEST TOMATO TRELLIS!

- In this video I'm finally adding the third section of trellis to our tomato beds. I'll show you how to build this trellis for yourself, step by step.
I'll also show you how to grow tomatoes single stemmed, in my opinion, the best way to grow tomatoes vertically in a small space garden.

It’s so fun to see how far your homestead has come. All the animals are playful and comfortable ( not to mention well fed). It was not so long ago that Daisy and Bella were just getting used to each other. Now seeing the 2 little lambs just makes me smile. Congratulations, you, Emilie, and Noah have a created a beautiful homestead!
Bella is such a puppy so cute, and those sheep are just the bees knees!
The chickens are are too!! ;).
If you put out hanging flower baskets from the cross beams - "you build it, they will come" - doves will take up nesting under the eaves, with their soft cooings.

My husband just made me mine last Sat! But I am not growing but 3 different tomatoes, and 1 cherry tomato. I have NEVER had good luck! This is the year! Thanks!

My cherry tomato plant came through the winter also (I'm in SD also). I pulled off all the brown growth and now I have revived it and it's full of yellow cherry tomatoes. We are about ready to make your tomato trellis. Thanks for the tips!

Love the baby dolls, they are soooo stinkin' cute❤ One note on your concrete work: when you dry set instead of mixing the concrete first, it does not cure all the way through, and only has about 1/4 of the strength of properly poured concrete.
For your trellis, it might actually be more solid and stable to pack in fill dirt with a tamper.

I have a structure that I built that looks like yours sort of, I updated it yesterday. Anyway, you mentioned using landscape staples to secure the string. I tried something different and it worked out really well. I ran a cable at the bottom all the way across (about 21 ft) just at or below the soil surface. I used a turnbuckle to tighten it up and that’s where I tie up the string at the bottom for all the tomatoes, it works great. My garden staples didn’t always stay in place, so I found this to be great.

I tried your trellis last year but didn't have all the wood so I used what I had which didn't work. The trellis wasn't strong enough and the tomatoes sagged to the ground.
This year I watched an old video and went to the hardware store and got what I needed to recreate your old trellis. I built my new trellis and then you came out with this video. Lol. It's okay I'm liking my new trellis and I think it will work this year. Looking forward to growing lots and lots of tomatoes up the trellis this year!
This is sooo good Brian. I so want to make one as we have put up with make-shift supports for our outdoor toms for so long. We do have several big projects first though...always something 😂

I used to do a lot of projects outside and didn't have the strength to screw eyes all the way down. So I would get a good start, and then put a screw driver through the hole for leverage and easily twist it all the way in with it. Easy peasey.
'man hands' have a lot more strength. As a woman, you can drill a much smaller pilot hole, and easier to make sure they go in straight

A good trellis, is the overhead platform, and have crossbars come outward. Then be able to "lean" the tomato vines alternating to the left and to the right. This allows more sizable tomato plant's foliage, increased smaller planting footprint - more vines, more tomatoes. Use the tomato ratchets and string on the outward side of the crossbars.
One could literally plant a double row of tomato plants in the same garden bed.

I would like to make a suggestion. With all due respect, I wonder if you could attach the short sections to the 2 x 4's on the ground and then attach the whole thing in one shot. Less time climbing the ladder too. Would that work or would it be too heavy to lift?

Great to see this video up! I planted tomatoes this year as you said in your video on giving them a great head start, and boy did that work, fantastic thumb wide stems and are already producing tomatoes.

Can the chickens keep up with the overflow or do you set up a free roadside stand or do you take your bountiful overflow to the local food bank?
I love your trellis! And all the incarnations folks have made of it. Since we moved to a house next door to a black walnut tree (we bought the house in winter, so I did not recognize the tree as a reason not to buy this house) I'm forced to grow in containers. I'm wondering if your video ' How to Grow Tomatoes in a Container or Pot' from May 1, 2022 is the one to use as reference for that project?
I don't have to pull plants because of impending frost until the first week in October, but there is still a chance of frost until May 24th here in my zone in Ontario. Which is why we also make maple syrup. Nature is such a treasure.
I have not had much luck with tomatoes in pots, however, I think I will try growing dwarf varieties in pots next season, have those in the greenhouse for earlier yield.

I use a variation of your method. But wanted to footstomp what this method provdes in terms of small spacing and closer planting. I can put a BUNCH of tomato plants in a 4 X 10 bed and grow a number of varieties. I created a fence wire type canopy at the top (about 8') and when the plants eclipse that canopy, I let them run free - limited or zero pruning. By that point in the season, I no longer have to worry as much about pests and diseases. Yields are beyond plentiful.

I did have a brainwave when I was putting the eye screws in. If you put an Alan key in the chuck of your drill it saves exertion on your hands.

Cattle panels & T posts. Raise the panels 15-20" above the ground and you got the worlds best tomato trellis. I've been doing it that way long before it became cool.
When I figure out how to fit a 16' panel into a Prius I'll be right there too! I actually can just fit 10' boards in my car if they aren't too wide, so this is actually more doable for me.

Some time ago I watched a video on tomato trellising similar to yours. When the tomato reached the top, he unwound the cord and moved the cord hook to the right. He kept going moving each tomato one hook and the last, to the other side. Each plant trailed on the bottom in a circle, instead of coiling in place. Let me know what you think.
I know a sheep rancher and he had some black sheep. He sold those to us for the meat only as his regular clients did not want the black wool as it is not able to be colored. Just FYI.

Question; how can you rotate crops if you put up a permanent trellis in those beds? I always thought you shouldn’t grow the same crop in a raised bed two consecutive years in a row to prevent disease.
Did you mention the height of the 4x4s?
So just curious, do the lambs provide any other purpose for your homestead other than just complete cuteness? Not that it is a bad thing, just wondering if they provide any resource of any kind. Like maybe wool? Wasn’t sure if they’re just a really cute addition to your wonderful lifestyle. Thanks
All the weight, of the boards and the tomatoes, is carried by the screws holding those 2x4s onto the sides of the posts. That's a lot of load; I wish you had been able to show that part in more detail.

Trying to figure out a trellis that will work in my 3x4 bed. I have to grow in a large chicken run to save our garden farm deer and squirrels so I'm also limited on height.

In the video where you showed a trellis you made at your mom‘s house, it didn’t look like you put the in pieces into cement or into the raised bed frame… is that correct?
Do you have trouble with sand getting on your retractable hose and messing up the retractor? My new one says you have to wipe off the sand before returning it to the holder. Just curious.
Nothing cracks me up more than a dog with a case of the “zoomies”, and watching Daisy starting to follow Bella’s example was truly funny.
On another note (and I really thought I had seen it on your channel), someone was showing off an identical tomato trellis to yours, BUT… when they let out the string, they moved the hook down one further crosspiece each time, winding the tomato plants around the outside of the main posts, sort of in a racetrack pattern. If it was your channel, I apologize😢. I watch a LOT of uTube videos, and although you are one of my favorite influencers, sometimes all the videos get a little mixed up in my brain.
Do you change out the tomato soil each year? I have heard that tomatoes should be planted in new soil each year (?)

Did you say what kind of wood you used for the 4x4? If its just pine I'd be worried about it rotting out, but you can't use pressure treated because of chemical leaching.... opinion?
I use regular pine. It does deteriorate over time but it is cheaper and easier than the expensive kinds

Shake your tomato plant when starting to bloom or use an electric tooth brush to vibrate the stems with flowers. This increases pollination tremendously. 😊😊

Do you ever have an issue with this style in high winds? I can see this working well under cover in my situation but outside would be an issue I think.
Nope. Never been an issue
They are anchored into the ground with concrete.

Hi Brian, will this trellis work if I build it on a 4x8 raised bed? I would only be able to access it from one side...unless I put a board across the bed to stand on. Or, if I made a trellis that didn't have the cross pieces on top, and planted only 1 row, would that work, only accessing from one side? Thank you! You are one of my favorite UA-cam gardeners. I thought you were supposed to unwind the hooks a couple times and move them one post over. Eventually they wind around the trellis rather than lay on the ground. Huh. I have a shorter grow season, so I just let mine get to the top and flop. They won't survive the winter like they do in SoCal (used to get tomatoes for Christmas!).
Do yourself a favor buy a impact driver so much easier to use than a drill.
my beds are 4x8. are they too narrow to place 3 rows?
I tried to do the single stem for the tomatoes but only got one or two tomatoes on each plant. I did not top it off though.
