    Someone had donated 6 6ft by 1ft by 1ft coated metal square tomato cages to my local thrift store. They were going to scrap them because they didn’t know what they were, but I asked about them and they just let me have them! It was probably $250 4 years ago.

    We went to cattle panel trellis's this year, and so far, they're working wonderfully. Similar
    to your net weaving (3rd choice). Only drawback is I'm monitoring growth almost daily,
    because the training is a little tricky working growing stems up though rigid openings,
    whereas moving netting would be easier.
    Thanks Jacques

    Great video! We use a Florida weave on our farm, about 100 foot beds with tomatoes on both sides. It’s very unruly (especially with the cherries), takes a long time to keep everything tidy, but the yield makes all the difference. Great method.
    If I were gardening a small plot for myself though that net method seems like exactly the way to go, super easy to work with once it’s set up and plenty of tomatoes for one person to have a nightly bruschetta from July to September

      I do pretty much the same. We have the garden enclosed in deer fencing and I’m making it pull double duty as a tomato trellis. Great air flow, for sure. It’s thin enough wire that I can also use the tomato clips, which has seriously saved my sanity when trying to wrangle the stems.

    I love the single string method so much. Small backyard, limited space, blah, blah ... It allows me to plant more densely and try new varieties while I continue to grow my main-stays. But, like you, I will let 2/3 even 4 vines grow for maximum yields. The other advantage, is if I decide I want to remove a plant (for whatever reason) - I can let the neighboring plants bush out more and not lose overall production. For me, it's the only way to fly.

    Hi Jacques,
    Thanks so much!!!
    I only have determinates this year due to space issues. Have a small deck of a boat that can get crowded - but I have previously grown several indeterminates all together and did not have many problems and had a great yield.
    I like your advice, will consider your compostable option, but not sure it will work. Will think about it for next year.
    This year has left me with a plethora of disease issues due to too much rain, too much cloud and too cool temps, oh, and ducks, coots and moorhens thinking I am preparing nests for them🤨. It's been a bad year😔😭😔😭😔😭😔😭😔😭😪😪😪😪😪😢😢😢😢

    I am a complete fail at efficient trellising this year. Some of the plants in my tomato forest have 4 stakes, one of which is 8 feet tall. They loo like espaliered fruit trees. I will put in t-posts this winter for tomatoes and dahlias. I really didn't plan on making an absolutely giant tomato forest in an old bed that has been fallow and under cardboard for over a year. But, while perhaps unwieldy and expensive (8 ft stakes are an investment!), it works. My cherries just started and I have a few slicers ripening. It's the best time of the year!

    • @jacquesinthegarden
      @jacquesinthegarden  6 місяців тому

      Haha the classic tomato forest, my first year was a collection of random branches random straight looking pieces of wood and metal from all over the yard. But we got a huge harvest held together by twine and sticks!

  • @johndesrocher4289
    @johndesrocher4289 6 місяців тому

    I've tried everything but the string method, and I hands down prefer my netting trellis. Everything is cut to the perfect size, I can just take it down with the fence posts at the end of the year, carefully wrap it up, and store for the winter. Key word is "carefully". A combination of string and clips keeps everything fairly neat and tidy, although I let some plants get a little wild near the top of them this year, just to see how it all works out. So far, it's been a great year for toms as well as cukes!

    You have so many toms that I can't believe you eat all of them. Do you preserve them or give them away? I give my extras, (plenty) away to neighbors. In fact I have my garden in the front yard accessible to them and encourage them to help themselves. They've all got the misconception that I'm very generous. They don't seem to grasp that they are helping me by taking them. I can never eat all I grow. I do like to pickle a bunch of my cucumbers. I have had so many this year that a couple neighbors pickled some of my extras also.😅. Love❤ your channel. You do a fantastic job demonstrating and explaining your message.

    • @jacquesinthegarden

      So I do my best to eat them all but my family is also fully addicted to tomatoes. Last weekend I had a little summer party and each person left with 2-5 big tomatoes! I have made a few batches of sauce and also have a ton of frozen tomatoes already. I am actually planning on making a little produce donation box for the neighbors well!

    That was really informative. I mostly just use stakes. My bed is considered to be ADA compliant. It's like a raised bed; but, on legs instead of on the ground. I'd like to try some of the other trellis options; but, I'm not sure which would work the best. I would still need to reach the top level of tomatoes.

    • @jacquesinthegarden
      @jacquesinthegarden  7 місяців тому

      I would highly recommend you look into the "dwarf tomato project" there are just over 100 tomato varieties that have been bred to cap out around 4-5 feet. That means you can use a simple stake or cage without compromise. The tomatoes are fully flavored and full size and produce abundantly!

  • @Murzington
    @Murzington 6 місяців тому

    Florida weave seems really similar to trellising for grapes and cane berries. Now I'm wondering if you can set up a more permanent trellis system like those and use the twine and clips to keep things off the ground and organized. 🤔🤔

    I love the Florida weave but I think a huge downside is early on in the season you have to bend over pretty hard to complete the string rows and it's bad on the back. Back-friendly trellis methods I'm def gonna pay more attention to in the future.

    • @jacquesinthegarden
      @jacquesinthegarden  7 місяців тому +1

      That is a valid one but as a counter point they already have a solution! You run string through a piece of pipe and tension it with your thumb so that you can wrap all your plants without bending over. You can find examples on UA-cam as it is common practice on farms!
