    I think it’s such a lovely and wise decision to live with Leah’s parents, especially during those postpartum weeks. Having a baby, no matter how pregnancy or birth goes and no matter how prepared you feel (or not haha), it is just such a shocking shift in the life you’ve known, the more support and help you have the better! When you look at the highest risk factors for postpartum mental health struggles, trying to navigate new parenthood alone is a significant one. We’re just not meant to do it on our own. You are already doing such a great job of giving your baby the best start in life by making sure you are both in a position where you have the most help and support available possible. And there is just no better gift than a good relationship with grandparents! ❤

    So glad to hear you talk about inter-generational living. I don't know why there's such a stigma attached to it. Especially with the insane cost of living now it would make so much sense for people to live this way if it's possible.

    Ok first, that overly large pepper grinder in the B roll at the end😂.
    Second, we moved in with my parents when I was 26 weeks pregnant because our house wasn’t ready for move in yet and our lease was up. It was great to be with family and also we were able to split up chores more so it was easier on all of us. We ended up moving when I was almost 41 weeks and I went into labor moving day morning and had our baby girl at 11pm that night. I don’t think I’ve ever been so exhausted in my life after the stress of moving in labor and then the birth itself.
    It was a tough transition into a new home with just me, my husband and new baby with suddenly no family around, so I think it’s great y’all are planning on staying there after the baby is born. Take all of the support you can get. We still live close to our family and it’s beautiful seeing the relationship our daughter has with her grandparents.

    How wonderful to have kind generous parents to offer you their home and how wonderful for Leah to have such strong family support at such a pivotal time in her life.

    I'm all here for community living!
    I live in a house with 5 other roommates and we've created a queer/trans community and healing home for ourselves. There's so much talk and trends of tiny houses and micro living, while I'm passionate about community and shared living with more people in the same home. It's not for everyone and takes specific skill sets to develop but is so good in so many ways.
    Social supports, sustainability, affordability all together!

      @@LeahandLevi Heck yeah. I'm in Vancouver and there's definitely community around collective housing here. It certainly is also born out of necessity of affordability of course but that's lead some to ingenuity. Like the cases of groups of people renting a mansion for 10 or so people to live in for instance. In case you're looking for a topic to explore in the lower mainland. :)

    First off, congrats!
    Good call on moving in with the parents. I had a baby in January, and I'll tell you that any help you can get is amazing, and you'll definitely be glad you did it (my mom came from Canada for 4 weeks when our daughter was born, and she was sorely missed when she left). Childbirth is hard, the postpartum period involves a lot of recovery, and taking care of a new baby can also be tough sometimes, and having people to help pretty much means Leah will be able to 'sleep when the baby sleeps'. Plus Leah's parents will definitely enjoy being so close to their grandkid right off the bat!
    You'll actually be glad you're sharing a room with the baby, especially if you plan on breastfeeding. Here in Germany, it has become the norm to share a room with your baby for 6 months to a year...our parents didn't do it, but almost everyone does it now. You don't have to go to a different room when you do night feedings and changes, which actually makes a big difference. A lot of people here also use co-sleeping cribs (we did for sure), and if you do that, you don't even have to get up every time.

    Leah, I noticed you have a deep porta cot set up for bubby. In the post natal period, your hip bones and ligaments are very soft from the birth hormones and things can slip out of place easily for a time. I had a deep crib for my daughter when she was born, but herniated a disk in my back and crushed my ilia lifting her in and out. I found an adjustable crib where the base could be set up high so I didn't have to bend, then lowered as baby grew. Just a little info that I hope might make your life easier. 🙂 And wow Levi! How clever is your dad, building that beautiful bed!

    I hope you don’t mind an unsolicited suggestion from another Leah!! When I was pregnant I discovered a nice trick. While pregnant it was annoying having to go to the Dr. at least once a month and usually having to go back to work. I learned to take a clean, dry washcloth with me in a plastic bag. After being examined by the Dr. and having KY smeared around my private parts I could wash. Every examination room has a sink and being able to wash with warm soapy water was delightful. You could take two and use one to dry.

    I’m the kind of millennial who lived with my parents until my early 30s, and I don’t regret it, but it has made me want independence even though I do appreciate living in proximity to them when possible. If my in-laws didn’t live in a car-dependent area, I’d consider living with them also.
    I wish I could afford a nice city triplex and house everyone together but separately, haha.

    I just found your channel because I was searching for how to care for my Birkenstocks. I grew up on the island in Nanaimo so it’s neat to hear your story of moving to Nanaimo. Leah mentioned she taught, is it ok to ask what she teaches and if it’s with a company online? Fellow teacher as well. Thanks. Looking forward to watching more videos and maybe even checking out some of your older ones too!

    living with your parents after a certain age is kinda seen as " come on grow up" and especially even more once your married and living there with your spouse. I would honestly keep renting the apartment and keep it as a source of income. Great video as always 👍

    Curious, since I’m totally unfamiliar with the housing market out there, is it cheaper to buy a place in Nanaimo or Victoria? You still own the apartment, but just sub-leasing it out, so if you did sell the apartment next year, could the money from it be a good chunk of the cost of a house in Nanaimo?

    • @LeahandLevi
      @LeahandLevi  11 місяців тому

      Yeah Victoria is more expensive for sure but we’re not giving up on the apartment yet so we’ll just see what the next year brings and go from there you know? 🤷🏻‍♂️

    We Mexicans are very familiar with living with our family. Either in the same house or next to each other. Family and community is a very important thing about our culture. I have seen that in North American people are different, it makes me wonder if that’s the cause of so much mental illness and drug abuse that’s invading USA. Family and community is very important

    What was the situation with the furniture and the belongings of the apartment? If it was a lease out apartment why were the “land lords” belongings in there? I’ve been here since before that apartment so I assumed during Van life the yellow couch and such was in storage or something. Was the leased out renters more like a hotel/Airbnb using your furniture and watering your plants and such but technically “living” There?

    • @LeahandLevi
      @LeahandLevi  11 місяців тому +1

      Our original plan was to come back so the apartment was rented furnished to a couple doing their medical residency (looking for a furnished apt). We decided to renew but we agreed to move a few things out for our room with Leah’s parents. If we extend it would probably empty it fully but it works for both parties so far. 🤷🏻‍♂️👍🏼

    Contribute to mortgage payment, property taxes, utilities, water, internet, etc.

    • @LeahandLevi

      We're sorting this out as we go. Right now we buy groceries and beer etc for the household as we go and we're insuring and maintaining ownership of the Prius as a vehicle for family use. If things get more complicated we are willing to set up a more formal monthly payment system but we haven't got there yet. 🤷🏻‍♂ hope this helps!
