A lot of y’all seem to be overlooking the fact that 1) we are on a (partial) vacation and 2) these are the total costs for TWO adults! Of course you could do this cheaper if you decided to have less fun.

Pro Tip, look for a public library in the towns you stop in for free wifi, a/c, and comfy spaces! It is a great alternative to coffee shops if you are primarily looking for wifi. Also! Check to see if the library in the city you are in has recording space. As a librarian it is increasingly for common for libraries to have space for patrons to be able to set up and do audio or video recordings. Libraries are truly magical places!

Also, check and see if the library will let you join for a nominal fee. Library card + Libby app = ebooks (and magazines, depending on the library.)

@@HarryLovesRuth also depending on the library they may not have a fee at all to get a card if you aren’t local! I worked at a library where anyone could get a card regardless of their address.

Things to take into account: you are still earning money while on the road, you aren't paying for regular things like utilities, and you are saving a fortune in gas. I think your budget is on par! And California Will be your spendiest part of your trip but you will save sooooo much in Mexico so it will all even out. My husband and i spend a month in Mexico and stay in hotels and only get to about 1500usd and we splurge quite a bit on food and drinks and car rentals etc. I think it's awesome how open you guys are about this stuff. Enjoy your trip!

I bought a 3/4 Cummins and 23 foot toy hauler last year to travel and explore. It was so expensive I bought a cheap 2010 Prius that I camp in, explore in and use for everything. I rarely drive the truck. I used to laugh at the Prius, now I love mine.

I love you two!! You're so engaging with your audience and personable! Since my camper is a solo unit, I have a Dometic freezer and the Yeti 35 that is my refrigerator. So, I can freeze items and I use frozen water bottles to transfer over to the Yeti 'fridge' so I don't have to but ice. This way I can buy a lot more food and have far less stops at grocery stores and will never have to buy ice again. It works very well. And in case you're wondering how I keep the Dometic still working while the Prius is parked and not running, I have a Jackery Explorer 1000 solar generator that will be the electrical source until I start the car again. It works well as long as there's enough power in the Jackery. I know your set up is much different than mine, but there are ways to minimize those trips to the store. Thank you for making such wonderful videos. I would love to see your set up in person, for sure. Safe travels! Blessings!!

Do consider "shopping" ahead of arrival to an area on line for your food stuffs and beer. It is amazing how much this can save. Also, when you are in bigger areas with bigger and more stores buying some canned products, other staples, other consumables, and things like tools, equipment, and the like. Even buying just enough for a day or two can reap enough savings to count.

Being homeless, as in living in a tent or vehicle somewhere, is far more expensive than many would even fathom to believe. Food, water, and hygiene costs go up with housing instability whether couch surfing or curb sitting. Many of the retiree RVers of the 1980's and 1990's discovered that "housing costs" or space rental became increasingly hard to find and surprising expensive as time went on too; often more than mortgage and taxes had cost them. Space rental, vehicle fuel, more convience foods mixed with not knowing where to shop in New areas, and even propane added up quickly. Vehicle maintenance and repairs often sent thier budgets over the edge.

I go on a yearly 1 week 3,000 mile road trip from California to Texas and back to see family in my Prius (About $500 in gas). I never pay for accommodations, but instead sleep at rest stops over night or in a family member's guest room. The law says 8 hrs at a rest stop, but law enforcement also know the average person needs 8 hrs of sleep, so they usually don't do anything if you spend an extra 2 or 3 hours using the bathroom, eating food, walking the dog etc. before you leave. I once had a staff member of a rest stop come up to me once and say, "hey you were here the last time I came to clean and I just want to check when you're planning to leave." I told the guy I had decided to clean my car that morning and would be leaving in the next hour and he was like cool no problem. I think I'd been at that rest stop close to 12 hrs at that point and that's the only time in 10 yrs of doing my yearly road trips that I've ever had anyone say anything about the amount of time I stayed.

You have so many more miles than I do but I'm always surprised when people get asked about leaving when at rest stops. I've been from NJ to OR and I've never been talked to despite being known to *sleep.* Gas stations are pretty understanding too (especially if they serve truckers) but living on a highway the rule at our stations is head out at dawn.

There isn’t a state in this country with the heart, the history and traditions so full and intertwined like the state which welcomed immigrants from before the inception of this country. When I go car camping around the United States the only time I eat out is at a Taco Bell, two bean burritos. All my other food expenses go to big chain grocery stores. If I had better refrigeration in my Toyota Avalon I could eat better for less money. Boondocking is the best because campground costs can be significant. I have a lifetime America the Beautiful Senior Pass which gives me free entrance into US national parks and a half charge rate on Nationla Park camping fees. For entertainment I usually listen to Audible books rather than print books. My Audible library is nearly 1000 books as I’ve been a member for decades. Gas is also a significant expense because a month trip can range over 6000 miles or more. Gas is WAY more expensive in the West rather than in Northwest Florida where I live, usually twice as much or more.

Sleeping in public places “stealth” camping is actually not allowed in some places either . You better read up on local laws about certain things before you proceed in the state of California …

I live in St. Catharines, Ontario, and I end up spending a ton of money on groceries for just me and they're not even organic most of the time because I find the prices ridiculous. To fill up my SUV has cost up to $120 bucks at the peak of gas prices, and drive a lot, so that's at least weekly. Not sure of your itinerary, but if you can, Nevada is a pretty stunning contrast to where you’ve been, even the area around Vegas is naturally stunning higher altitude desert and mountains (especially after the hot weather and monsoon season passes in the next few months.) I do feel it is a bit insane to build an urban area that large there with the water issues going the way they are going.

Ok, I know you have sticker shock, but the amount to the right of the decimal represents cents, not dollars. Good for you for emphasizing the expenses are illustrative of two people having a long, working-vacation. Adventures are good and travel expands our understanding of this world, others and ourselves. Hope you wind your way down to south Florida, a well-known friend to Canadians!

I’m curious how you are accounting for the bigger & less frequent expenses, especially for the vehicle, like the lift. Is this just going to be tallied at the end with all the disposition expenses?

I almost asked how much gas was XD I can't believe you beat it with beer lol. Yay Prius. Are you subleasing your place back in Canada?

Be careful being intoxicated and being in a car. Even if you are parked. Camping. If you are drunk you could get arrested. Lose your car. Get kicked out of the country. Even if you are not driving.

Thanks for sharing this! I find a lot of channels skip this part . Also how much the channel generates $$$ and what’s tax deductible, gross income, net income of yearly expenses. I’m curious 🧐

Thanks for the comment! Yeah in retrospect I think it's important to mention that this is all a business thing right? Should have been more clear there.

Yep. That's cheap as freak. $22 a day for 2 people on vacation? I just spent $11 on a loaf of Italian bread, guacamole, in a banana for lunch. And none of it was organic

True story…and I’m not even a vanlifer. I got “the knock” in Weed, CA at a motel parking lot just for pulling over to nap in my car for a few hours back in the early 00s. It is the first town after all of those passes on I-5. Glad to see it’s going better for you!! I think those expenses are great! It’s also vacation. You’re experiencing new things, eh?

can you recommend a foldable bowl/box? I read a few reviews and it seems like they like to break.

We have one from sea to summit. Hasn’t broken yet but we don’t use them daily. More like emergency to go boxes
