it's really refreshing to see people who seemingly "perfect" on social media admitting their failures. It really resonates with your mission to tell others that saving planet and whatever you believe in are doable by "regular" folks.
That is totally crazy. In France a law is protected the buyer. If during the first six month you find out something wrong that had been hidden, the seller has to take the car back, refund you and pay for the money spent. And for such a case he could be strongly sentenced for putting someone else's life to danger.
There are laws here in Canada, but it depends on the province. Pulling up a car report though would show all the various sellers which would've been a red flag. Can't say I fault them though since it was someone they trusted that said the car checked out. I'd have trusted them too.
In Massachusetts we have a "Lemon Law" If you find the car you bought has problems the seller has to take it back and refund your money. "How many days do you have to return a used car in Massachusetts? If they don't tell you about a known problem, you have 30 days to cancel the sale and get your money back. You're also protected under the Massachusetts Inspection law. When you buy a car, you must have it inspected at a registered station within seven days of you buying it." from the Boston government site.
I knew you'd never sell to another individual regardless of the financial loss. I saw in the comments you mentioned to the KIA dealership the engine issue and they acknowledged they found problems... So you kinda confronted them re their unethical "flip". I probably would have reported KIA, given regulators a heads up because if they did that with your car, it's likely how they do business. Which is dangerous & illegal. It's never too late.
That rusty door hinge… the car may have been in a flood which destroyed the engine, best to always get on the floor and look under any used car you’re looking to buy. Any excessive rusting = a flood and a money pit. Also good to do if you’re in an are that uses road salt, as some car frames are more prone to damage from the salt over time.
I think the best solution in this situation would be to sell Earl for parts (or sell the parts yourself). Also - is there a way you can report the Kia dealer?
Before I bought my used car I spent the $100 at the mechanic to get it all inspected that can definitely save you a lot in the long run. That made me sick to hear they put that up for sale and for that price without fixing it wow.
The problem is, if all the sensors are disconnected when the inspector plugs in the computer it won’t show any problems… I don’t believe there’s an error code for “sensor not found” though there probably should be.
Wow. What a story. Thank you so much for sharing - especially your thought process during it all. Hopefully I won’t have to by a new (or new to me) car anytime soon, but will definitely have to keep this in mind. I’m in an area that is car dependent, so not having a car isn’t a realistic option unfortunately.
Victoria now has Evo and when I tell you I was excited when I heard the news because it is hard to get around the city with transit and just biking. A car sharing service was much needed in the area and I hope y’all are able to take advantage of it!!
Did you end up telling the car dealership (maybe anonymously) about what needed to be done with the car? I probably would have done the exact same thing as you so I'm happy that you told this story.
Yeah I told them that I was having some engine issues when I picked up the car and he actually admitted that they noticed it too. But I think they just planned to flip it asap... 😬😭
@@LeahandLevi I think they’ll invest into the car as long as they know it’s sold! Here in Italy they’d have to offer a 1 year warranty to the final customer: it would’t be wise to sell a broken vehicle. I don’t know how it works over there though.
this is pretty common for victoria car dealers actually, I sold mercedes my C63 a few years ago for around 30k, it needed new fuel pumps (2 month wait from germany) and a few other things, they had it up for sale for almost $40k the following week and I know for a fact they didn't fix anything that fast. Car dealers are pretty slimy in this city
I hate anything that I cannot fix myself. And cars are at the top of my list. Sorry to hear that man, you will have a better life without a car I'm sure :D
My heart goes out to you. I was getting PTSD from my horrer experience with my truck that my husband and I shared. We spend around the same amount over 4 years and ALL of the money I set back to have a baby and it constantly had issues. We ended out selling it "for parts or repair" for $1500 and it had stranded me multiple times and we were told THE DAY WE BOUGHT IT that it was unsafe to drive because of all the issues in the undercarriage. Took us years to pay it off and the final straw was when it almost threw my husband off the road and it was a serious problem that would cost another $4k to fix. I know exactly how you guys feel and I am so glad you shared your story so I can see that we aren't the only ones who have gotten scammed in such a way
i was expecting good guy Levi to swoop in and be like you cant sell it for that and take the car back since he said he didnt want to dump it on someone
Yes, in my mind they are obliged to do that. I would not be able to sleep knowing this and that some other person now is in danger. Also, it was not clear whether they told the KIA dealership about the problems. They just transferred responsibility on someone else. Really disappointed in them.
I think everyone in their lifetime will make choices like this on emotions or without researching too much. Like you said too, a lot of suburban places don’t really have good transit systems or amenities within walking distance, so you’re kind of forced to buy a car. Before moving into Toronto proper, I was in a suburb of the GTA and I had no choice but to own a car. I bought a car from Honda brand new and was definitely sucked into the sales pitch. You live and learn though! Thanks for sharing your story.
Really enjoyed your guys perspective on this. It's unfortunate that happened to you guys. First rule of buying a car is never let someone else but it for you with you being present. Countless times I've heard of similar stories of people getting lemons due to someone else checking out the car.
Not having things like the check engine light sounds really scary. Glad you two stayed safe! Thanks also for sharing your story-it was a helpful (tho unfortunately expensive) lesson of what to not do when buying a car, and hopefully it will help some people. Sucks that so many places are car-dependent; I live in a rural area in the US and have to have a car for work, groceries, etc. A huge dream of mine is moving to a city and getting rid of my car.
Thanks for another great video Levi! I literally drank my coffee while watching this :-) I’ve been transitioning into my own eco-friendly lifestyle thanks in large part to your videos, and this video really helped me to contextualize that we’re not all perfect and that there are many layers to ways we contribute to this planet. This has helped me accept my journey, faults and all, a little bit better and to know that one bad purchase doesn’t mean I should give up entirely on the process. I’m not sure if that was entirely the intent of the video, but I appreciate it! Also, I can’t wait for Leah to drop that beauty routine! Share those secrets!!! Thanks again for an awesome video!! You two have seriously inspired me and helped me make actionable changes more than you know :)
I live in the remote wilderness of the PNW (🇨🇦)… in the total stix… where a vehicle is an absolute necessity for everything. I own a small 4WD truck which is the safest vehicle for dangerous winter driving conditions. We shop carefully when we buy a used truck and once we buy one… we own it for life. It will be welcome and interesting to see where vehicle ownership goes for those living in rural/remote places when we, as a society move away from fossil fuel engines. There are currently no EV charging stations where I live nor is there any public transit, car sharing, etc. As Bob Dylan says “The Times They Are A Changing”. Thanks for sharing your story with us today 🚗… pardon the pun… but wow, you two sure had a bumpy ride! 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary
@@LeahandLevi Hi Levi… I’m hoping you see this reply… what is a plug-in hybrid? Is this a plug-in motor that also runs on gas, or completely non-fossil fuel burning motor that charges a battery system? Great to hear this is an option in Hundy 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary
It’s a regular gas vehicle with a plug in electric motor that gets like 40-50km per charge. The RAV4 has one now. My parents rarely use the gas power on their Prius prime because they just charge it everyday at home from their outlet. 👍🏼
@@LeahandLevi Thanks Levi, that’s what I thought. Glad to hear your parents are finding this vehicle to be a good fit for their rural lifestyle. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary
Wow, I’m so so sorry to hear this! I actually first saw you guys just because I follow element hashtags. I have an 08 element and this was scary to watch! I’m so sorry this didn’t work out for you but hope you are able to find the best adventure car for you still out there! I’ve always thought dealerships were the most unsafe/slimey places too, this just goes to show. I’ve now owned my element for 12 of its 13 years and do everything in my power to keep it in great condition.
Thank you for sharing your story. I live in the USA. Car dependency is a must. I loathe it. My partner and I have 2 vehicles. We've spent roughly 70K us dollars. Plus all the extra stuff , maintenance, car insurance, gas. I'm dying yo relocate and have the ability to say adios! To cars. Fortunately we're handy . But dang that's still pricey! When you do small maintenance like air filters etc.
Living and working in Rural US here. If you don’t have a reliable vehicle, you’re in deep 💩. Most people here have to commute by car to work, a lot of people upwards of 45 min to 1hr. I am fortunate to work about a 15 min drive from home, but with no public transit, I still have to have a car or be prepared to walk our pedestrian un-friendly roads for about 8 miles. We got saddled with a lemon that we bought second hand a few years back, and we were in such a hard spot that we couldn’t borrow 10k to buy from a reputable lot and we also couldn’t afford to shell out the extra 5k for the new transmission that our new lemon needed about two months after daily driving. We wound up trading it to a guy for some work we needed done installing a water line. We told him up front why we parked it & wanted rid of it, and he had connections to fix it easier than we could. Be extra scrupulous and extra suspicious when shopping for cars, especially now when there is a shortage and cars (new or used) are like hens teeth! People will do seemingly anything to make a buck, including taking you and your hard earned savings for a ride… no pun intended. 🚗
I've kinda learned to drag my feet with big financial decisions and just be like, "there are tons of used cars for sale - I'm not married to this one." And being cool like a cucumber has worked to my advantage to where people will lower prices, so it's great.
While you’re telling the story, I felt like the only (unfortunate) choice was to scrap it, sell it as a parts car? Moral dilemma always supersedes financial…. the next owner could be in a less privileged position than you and have a less safe, more disastrous outcome with that poor car, just my two cents. I’m in social services, and always thinking of serving others and how we can positively affect people we don’t know, or at least not contribute to their misfortune
Yeah we thought about this a lot… we should have just scrapped it but I really didn’t expect Kia to just turn around and sell it without doing their due diligence. 🤦🏻♂️😭
@@LeahandLevi Honestly those issues while bad, aren't end of the road issues for someone willing to do the mechanical work. As a bit of an enthusiast car, it's likely if you listed it for sale with all known problems someone would have bought it that knew how to get it fixed and running correctly again.
It's strange how car dealers, corporations, etc. have so much selfish motive, like every single one.......i hope there's a day where everything turns around....that is, caring compassion and charity instead of complete selfish greed....If there is to be a government and money, the gov. should provide everyone with most things, like shelter, money, vehicles, free dental, internet, laptops, cell phones, etc., as long as the internet plays a major role...plus other necessities....instead of creating wars for profit and wasting tons of money on destructive things....Everyone ought to have the necessities, and then some, not just a priveledged few...Society is completely backwards......The government should step up and start helping homeless and needy people, etc., instead of wasting tons of money on war.....Movie stars are actually starting to help homeless people, like Will Smith's son, Jaden Smith.......The ridiculous price of cars is absolutely unnacceptable.....It is completely unnecessary to have all those electronics in the cars, and they create major complicated issues......i just saw a video that if you leave the new cars undriven for a couple weeks or more, the battery starts to discharge because of the electronics....It seems like there are more problems with the new cars, in general, than the older, more basic cars, (i'm not talking about your Honda problems)........There are a few good car channels that i recently discovered...Scotty Kilmer, ChrisFix and Rachets and Wrenches.....
this was a great follow up video to watch after the one about you guys not having a car for a year. This is the icing on the cake for me for reasons to stay away from getting a car when I don't really need one, just want to buy stuff just to buy it.
I have sooooo been there!!! My first car had the same issues. I constantly was spending money at the car shops to fix month after month. Do not miss that car.
You could look into filing a complaint with better business bureau against that KIA dealership? Not sure if this qualifies for a complaint or if anything would happen. From the picture of the car on the lot it looks like they aren't being upfront about the car being a rebuild, an important piece of information that they are well aware of...
I've never owned a car but who knows someday might have to, so it's great to be aware of this kind of experience! I think you did a good job to recognize the mistakes you made and regrets you have, but you're far from being the only ones to blame for whoever's going to buy it next. That's mostly on the back of the dealership in my opinion. Hopefully since they're accountable as a business the next buyer might have better options than you did :/
Levi Hildebrand, great video! Lots of things people can learn from seeing a story like what you told and shared with us viewers. Lots to take away from a situation the situation you guys went through here. Firstly though as you guys now learned for sure from this situation. DO NOT buy the first Honda Element you see, I don't know if you did.. Also have it mechanically inspected from the inside and out. Look everywhere underneath, brakes, engine components, lights, radio every single possible wiring system that is not (too technical to deal with). Ive been in that situation myself before probably more than I should have been with finances and purchases! One being when I sold my trailer I had purchased years ago through a terrible dealership in Nanaimo. Then a year later selling it for almost half the cost of the original price. Then spending that money from the trailer in a very foolish way.. So not only did I get scammed with a trailer, that was great I (I felt I was scammed) Thankfully (I feel for your guys intentions on the Honda Element) to then realize it was truly a lemon.. Thankfully the trailer I bought did not have any issues. As I would expect NOT considering it was from a dealership. I did not think very clearly on my decisions, which did set my savings back quite a lot over the years because of that move. I have learned personally to really be sure as you guys have! To be sure of everything you can possibly find with the vehicle or purchase you are about to make.
Please tell me there’s some legal recourse going on behind the scenes. At least with the dealership. 🤯 Also, really enjoying these “story time” video formats.
Haven’t seen anyone comment here yet - but it’s pretty common as a dealer to list a vehicle at the price you intend to sell it for, before the reconditioning work is complete. Dealers inventory systems are largely automated so once they bought the car from you it would be published on their website, Facebook marketplace, autotrader, etc and there has to be a price. While it sounds like they’re a little slimey, it *could* just be the case that they’ve found a used engine and will do the work before it finds a new home. Side note, Honda Element prices are crazy. Wow.
Right now I'm so thankful that my husband and I have moved from the US to Germany and we don't need a car. Everything is either within walking distance (or biking) or reachable with public transportation. My husband misses driving but he didn't have to commute in southern California traffic! I understand that moving is not an option for everyone: it's expensive, emotionally and physically exhausting, and complicated (esp in covid times).
When you start a car, all of the dashboard indicators (check engine, seat belts, etc) flash up as part of the boot sequence. Did it do that? Also, the gas mileage, acceleration (like up the hill) and emissions must have terrible as it would operate in a reduced power safe mode without any of the sensors attached to engine computer. They used to require emissions checks on used car sales and biennially, in Ontario but the Conservatives ended that. That would have picked up such issues and prevented ownership transfer. Thanks for sharing! (My son loved his Element for many years)
Those emissions tests were a scam. When they were mandatory, I took my 6 year old Honda Civic into a reputable repair shop and if failed. I took it to another shop (next door) the very next day and it passed. (Same circumstances, didn't drive it at all, etc.) Total BS and a money grab. I'm glad they ended them, they weren't legit.
Thank you for sharing this experience! Hopefully, you will save other folks time and energy by giving us all some important things to look for. If I ever buy or own a car, I am gonna look that thing over soooo hard.
In my country the custom is to have a mechanic with you when you go to see the car, who will open it up right there and look at the inside, or the person who is selling the car gives you the car for a day before you buy it so that you can drive it to your mechanic and get it fully checked. If the seller is avoiding this or making excuses something is wrong. So you can avoid a lot of scammers this way. But some things are still invisible at first, so you can never fully avoid it... used cars, that's how it is. Although my mom had a brand new peugeot 807 which had to be repaired every few months because something was constantly wrong with it. So you can never really know...
I had to buy a new car this year and after test driving them a lot and doing some research, I ended up falling in love with the Mini Cooper. However I am aware that Minis aren’t the most reliable, and so I have a chunk of money set aside for repairs eventually. With this in mind, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on one and after a month or two of deadends, my stepdad found a used 2016 clubman 5 minutes away from me at Carmax. I checked the Carfax report and it looked like it had been owned by 2 previous owners and before it was sold again at 62k miles, it had replaced the battery and a few other things. I’m not surprised, that’s when I’ve heard they start running into problems. It makes me a bit nervous, but I got a Mini now for 8k less than everything else we were seeing. I’m hoping to drive it around for several years at least and I’ll probably get a more reliable electric car down the road. Edit: $14,000 WHAT. Thankfully I don’t live in a city where I absolutely need a car, my roommate takes Ubers or has friends drive her around, but I have a 7 min commute to work now even though we have a more expensive apartment now. But we can also walk to the grocery store when the weather is nice. And there is a bunch of walking trails near us we can take bikes.
I bought a new Yamaha XT500 motorcycle in 1981, it has been my only vehicle other than a bicycle for 43 years and I am still driving it today. Other than normal wear and tear item iv not had to do any major work on it and it has 230 000kms on the clock. It could well last my entire life as spares are still quiet easy come by and the vehicle is still in very good condition mechanically. I am sorry your first vehicle purchase ended this way though.
Man this is what scares me about buying a newer vehicle. My ‘03 Sequoia has many issues like no AC and interior parts that are broken. However it starts everyday and get me and my large family where it needs to go. Used caprices have gone insane and I am not paying $15k+ for a minivan with 120k+ miles and god only know what kind of problems.
Your story makes me realize how lucky I have been, purchasing my last two cars online sight unseen. Both have turned out well. I drove the first one for 16 year and have 1.5 years on the second with no major problems. Maybe I'll be a little more careful on the next one though!
If it makes you feel any better, at least when someone buys it and and they inevitably have problems, they can go back to the dealership and go "what the heck!" and then they will be forced to do something about it or be reported (at least you can do that in the states). 🤷
We owned a Honda Element for 11 yrs, we loved it (it definitely sounds like you got scammed on a major lemon, so sorry what a huge headache)….In Feb we also sold ours, traded in with my car which was an older Nissan Leaf, for a 2020 Chevy bolt ev, we love this car, especially since elec & not gas, not happy with the recent recall waiting on parts to come in, but we are a 1 car family, no car doesn’t work for us, but we decided to go with another electric, thank you for sharing, you’re right sometimes we can make crappy mistakes, but learning & moving on is how not to make again….thx for video
I bought a used Honda Civic for $3500 and put in $1500 in repairs in six months I sold it for $3000 as I refused to put more money into it. I know that leasing a car is not always thought of as a good option but I have leased a 2021 Honda hrv and for the cost for three years and the savings in my insurance rate since it has all the new technology. I feel like I will be equal in out of pocket cost. And have a safe vehicle that covered by warranty that I know no one has tampered with. Cars are such a liability. Never an asset so I might as well rent a nice vehicle than own a money pit. Then in three years I can decide what’s next. Thank you for sharing this. It also shows you can’t trust the dealership on a used vehicle.
As someone who owns a Honda element (2008) my RPM gage and my miles per hour has been wrong for years. Everytime I ask someone to look at it they think it's fine. But I KNOW I'm consistently under the speed limit
I would have sold it for what I could, mobile deposited the check so I had the money in hand, then told them they needed to do the major inspection/repair. If they didn’t ask the right questions it is really their fault for agreeing to buy a faulty car (specifically because they are professionals vs an individual, selling to an individual who doesn’t know the questions to ask is entirely different).
I know this is an old video, but here's my Dad advice, as a five times over certified & fully licensed Dad. Never, even if it's a Honda or Kia or the like, buy a vehicle over (7) years old, preferably (5) years old, unless it's for some negligible amount that won't hurt too much if you have to drive it right over a cliff. In the States, nearly all vehicles now have extensive history reports, like Carfax to go along with them...a very important bit of extra info to go along with all the other info you process before buying. Cars are often bought online now, & there are some really good insurances/steps taken by those folks (the good ones) to be sure you've got a solid vehicle, & you've got time once it's in your hands to hit the red button. I'd go that route, because they don't mess around with crap cars, they don't make the cut...especially if know very little about cars, go with a method with built-in protections. Lastly, look for a good deal, but avoid the 'cheap' great deals...ya, I know $'s tight, but it'll cost ya so much more if you don't go with the solid vehicle. Lastly, you did a great job of explaining how difficult it is to say "no" once you've jumped thru some level of hoops just to look at a car...but take someone with you like your Dad who can physically inspect the car for you...they would have found the rust at least, & advised a big fat NO in this case. You're so very welcome for the Dad advise.
As someone who knows cars and lives in the lower mainland I can tell you with confidence, only buy from a reputable dealer and never purchase in Surrey. Glad thus saga is over for you guys.
Car shopping is so hard. If you have a bad feeling you gotta walk away. You get attached to the car when you first see it but you have to be able to walk away from it. I thinks that’s the most difficult thing to do.
I come from the USA. I’ve been living in Utrecht,NL now for 4 years car-free. I love that we do not have the expenses of car ownership. Bikes & trains have taken us where ever we need to and want to go.
Your story is the reason why I havent bothered yet to buy a car (luckly my life so far has set it to be not a need), there is so much shitty deals done, people pass the issue to others instead of solving it even at a financial loss. I do not trust anyone to sell me a car for a billion reasons, like prices, the actual state of a car, etc. Cars are such a liabilty that loses value so fast. Dealerships from what I have been told take the cake of shitiness, since all they care is profits doesnt matter if they screw you in the process.
Something similar happened to my mom with her current car she owns. She still has it and continues to dump money into it and it seems to barely hold together as we drive. It makes me really sad that this is a more common occurrence than you would think. 🥲
. . . tks for sharing this life-lesson . . . I need a vehicle to survive because of where I live, and am looking at purchasing a newer one . . . will reflect on your experience when I do . ..
it would have cost u like $2k - 2500 at most to replace the engine with a used one at any private shop. the problem is u went to the dealership. never go to any dealership for diagnostics or repairs
Get a scooter! ;) Hindsight is 20/20, but I would've sold it for parts to someone. Then you're honest but leave it up to them. I had a similar situation back in my younger "modding" days, but the car got so expensive, it got to the point where it was like a black hole. Such is life! I have to agree with you about the salesman. Just had to chase the dealer for updates on a car I just got. Terrible at communication. Ugh... Could've also parked near the ocean or a lake with a steep incline and you forgot to press the parking brake and it just happened to be rolled downhill...🙈🙉🙊 Btw, love the Red Green reference!
We went car shopping in late July and stopped by that dealership you mentioned. We definitely did not get a good vibe from the Kia dealership. We did wind up buying a Kia, but not from them. Victoria Hyundai treated us much better and weren’t nearly as smarmy. After watching this video today, I think we dodged a bullet.
the dealership where I bought my KIA (I live in Europe) is great but it’s where my parents live. The dealership where I live is exactly like the one you talked about. They have lied to me several times so I only go there when I need a lightbulb changed or it’s a real emergency. I usually take my car back to my parents‘ place for inspections etc.
I had a VW Golf that was a great car. Purchased new. Drove it for 10 years. Then suddenly, it started losing power. Which ended up being really scary when driving home in a very big snowstorm one late January evening. The next Monday we bought a Honda CRV, and traded in the VW. Just a few days later, the VW was for sale across the street for $6000. I feel sorry for the person who bought it. The dealer did not give me $6000 in trade. I seem to recall it was $2000. And we did tell them about the issue. It's all a scam. I hate buying cars, mattresses, really anything I can't just independently buy online (yes, I know cars and mattresses can be bought online). We usually go to a car dealer, for the test drive and to the mattress store, to, well, lay on the mattress. In almost every instance I feel scammed somehow. I had been planning to make my next car a used car, but now I'm really not sure.
It’s called a spoonerism, when you get your words or parts of words mixed up. Named after William Spooner. Going to shake a tower (take a shower). Snowing throwballs (throwing snowballs) .
My jaw hit the floor when you said that KIA just put the car back up for sale. I own a kia and you hit the nail on the head... mechanics, service staff I love. The sales staff tho...UUUGGHHH!! Recently I brought it in for service & I took a test drive in a different model out of curiousity and they were RELENTLESS! I kept saying 'see that car in the shop? THATS MINE & STAYING MINE" 🤬
My father always said a used car is just someone else's headache. I absolutely hate buying a car but I buy the best car I can afford and keep it up & it usually lasts 10+ years. Buy the least sexy car possible they seem to last the longest. Better yet- world get better transportation options!
Awesome video. But just so you know head gasket replacement is not a huge job. It’s unlikely they did it over the weekend but possible. Can be done in about 4 hours by a skilled person
Annnd this is why we only buy new cars in my family. Yes. They are more expensive. However, over the years my family has just be screwed over time and time again with used cars. And the amount of money we spent on repairs of used cars, we might as well have bought a new one. So now we just buy new cars, and drive them till they die. Usually we get 15+ years out of a new car.
I am in shock. The car is a potential hazard, yet you had to think about selling it to someone without disclosing the problems? Really? And you admit that to everyone in your video? You were contemplating putting someone in bodily danger and you had to think long and hard? WTF? Never would have thought that of you guys.
This would also be a good time to remind you and the viewer that it's okay to ask for a second opinion. In this case the 2nd opinion could have been an extra drive around the block before signing. Of course that wouldn't have changed the fact that the dealer was extremely shitty but you would have noticed the surface level issues. Out of curiousity tho, did you contact the dealer you bought it from? Did your insurance cover anything since this wasn't your fault? etc. AlsoI'm pretty sure you can file a complaint against the car/dealer for selling a faulty product. They're activly lying because i don't believe you wouldn't have told them about it. Or go back, see the car and leave a note in the glove compartment with a list of things that are wrong with it for the next owner and date the note.
Island vehicles are awesome and most people are honest when selling! I bought a 2007 Hyundai Tucson 4wd SUV for only $800. Put a bit of money in it and I have been driving it for over a year now without a single problem; off and on road! Rule is find an honest mechanic like Tennyson auto repair and never ever buy from a dealer! Get a car from an individual on Facebook, take it to your mechanic and you are good to go! The fact that this Honda didn't work shouldn't be a reason for you guys to cancel all your awesome plans! Get another one on Facebook for a 1000 and drive it until it dies! Scrap yards will always give you 300-500 for it!
There are a lot of scumbags in the auto industry! My first car was a rip off. Always check car's the history. When locking at the car bring someone with you that knows about cars, ideally a car mechanic. You can even let them pick the car. Always have i backup plan. I would tell you to just drive to pick up the car, because it's easy to change your mind. Here in Sweden there are stories of people buying crashed cars that where reassembled in Lithuania.
What dealership? Omg they cannot sell a used car without it going through their shop & safety check ! So either your Honda was not as bad as the mechanic said? You should approach that dealership because that’s totally illegal what they are doing … call them Motor Dealer Council on them.
it's really refreshing to see people who seemingly "perfect" on social media admitting their failures. It really resonates with your mission to tell others that saving planet and whatever you believe in are doable by "regular" folks.
Well I’m glad you appreciate it Harry. We all appear a certain way to others online. It’s good to keep it real whenever possible though
That is totally crazy. In France a law is protected the buyer. If during the first six month you find out something wrong that had been hidden, the seller has to take the car back, refund you and pay for the money spent. And for such a case he could be strongly sentenced for putting someone else's life to danger.
Not to forget the regular “contrôle technique” so you always know in what shape is your ride and avoid buying a lemon .
There are laws here in Canada, but it depends on the province.
Pulling up a car report though would show all the various sellers which would've been a red flag. Can't say I fault them though since it was someone they trusted that said the car checked out.
I'd have trusted them too.
Same thing here in Brazil. The best case they give you warranty, worst case you could just go to a court .
Yep. I was hoping this would end with that dealership getting shut down or something. ☹️
I’m surprised they didn’t just wholesale the car.
Not sure if I missed something - but if he didn’t tell them about the issues himself then he can’t very well report Kia?
That rusty door hinge… the car may have been in a flood which destroyed the engine, best to always get on the floor and look under any used car you’re looking to buy. Any excessive rusting = a flood and a money pit. Also good to do if you’re in an are that uses road salt, as some car frames are more prone to damage from the salt over time.
that's not very "be less shitty" of the dealership 🙃
Yeah they setting the bar for shitty in this situation…
There is no such thing as a "less shitty " dealership 😅
I think the best solution in this situation would be to sell Earl for parts (or sell the parts yourself). Also - is there a way you can report the Kia dealer?
Hey Team! Appreciate the transparency. This was a Learning experience.
Oh yeah!! 69 days sober today from drugs and alcohol 🎉
Hey! That’s awesome! Congratulations! (Also… 69 😂)
@@LeahandLevi you are such a child. LOL ;P
Good for u ❤️🙏🏼❤️
Congratulations 🎆🎈🎈👏🎈🎈
Before I bought my used car I spent the $100 at the mechanic to get it all inspected that can definitely save you a lot in the long run. That made me sick to hear they put that up for sale and for that price without fixing it wow.
Yeah we got it inspected and they said it was fine. 😳🤦🏻♂️ sadly you need to have an obvious problem for them to look deeper 🤷🏻♂️
Yes absolutely. You have to be very cautious we have learned. Wishing you the best!
I'm picturing the Kia dealership as that meme of the car salesman slapping the roof saying "this beast can fit so much spaghetti in it"
Hahaha yeah pretty much 😂
Victoria now has Evo and when I tell you I was excited when I heard the news because it is hard to get around the city with transit and just biking. A car sharing service was much needed in the area and I hope y’all are able to take advantage of it!!
We’ve been using Evo a lot lately actually! It’s great we have two options now 👍🏼
Did you end up telling the car dealership (maybe anonymously) about what needed to be done with the car?
I know exactly how you guys feel and I am so glad you shared your story so I can see that we aren't the only ones who have gotten scammed in such a way
Ugh I’m so sorry to hear that! Vehicles are such a huge liability. I hope you have better luck in the future!
i was expecting good guy Levi to swoop in and be like you cant sell it for that and take the car back since he said he didnt want to dump it on someone
Yeah sadly I'm not the hero of this story... 😬
@@LeahandLevi but that is a bad on you. There could be a reckoning here. I am left that the host is self-righteous, and needs to make it good.
Yeah I’m glad you appreciate it! Thanks for being here 🙏🏼🙋🏻♂️
Really enjoyed your guys perspective on this.
I literally drank my coffee while watching this :-)
I’ve been transitioning into my own eco-friendly lifestyle thanks in large part to your videos, and this video really helped me to contextualize that we’re not all perfect and that there are many layers to ways we contribute to this planet.
Thanks Sarah! Yeah we’re definitely not perfect! This was a humbling process for us 😬😭
I live in the remote wilderness of the PNW (🇨🇦)… in the total stix… where a vehicle is an absolute necessity for everything. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary
Hahaha nice puns Mary. 😂 I think a plug in hybrid is going to be a great option for rural areas. My parents just bought one 👍🏼
Good on ya for sticking with one vehicle that long! I've had my Pontiac G6 for 11 years now...I'm trying to maximize the post-payment years for sure.
Well I hope that one day you make the choice. It’s a hard one but now I find driving and car ownership to be really stressful 😬😢
Yes! Oh man a bad car can just spell disaster for people if the timing is wrong. Glad to hear you worked your way out of it!
I've kinda learned to drag my feet with big financial decisions and just be like, "there are tons of used cars for sale - I'm not married to this one."
And being cool like a cucumber has worked to my advantage to where people will lower prices, so it's great.
You're a badass...it's not easy to be pressure-proof, but it sure pays off.
Not cool man!
@@boss_ftw my exact thoughts! they could have sold it someone for 5000 that would have been willing to fix it themselves.
Love the vibe of this storytime video ^^ I cant believe your car was being resold over the weekend, insane!
Yeah we might actually be able to? I honestly never thought about that because we were just so glad to be done with the drama.
Hopefully since they're accountable as a business the next buyer might have better options than you did :/
Maybe one of you could sneak a note in the car somewhere? "Warning this car is a lemon "
🤯 Also, really enjoying these “story time” video formats.
thank you for being REAL, always !!
Yes I hope that dealership not doing their due diligence really bites them in the ass with lemon laws!
Thank you for sharing this story, goes to show that there is a risk with buying a second hand car, even from a “proper” car dealership :(
We owned a Honda Element for 11 yrs, we loved it (it definitely sounds like you got scammed on a major lemon, so sorry what a huge headache)….In Feb we also sold ours, traded in with my car which was an older Nissan Leaf, for a 2020 Chevy bolt ev, we love this car, especially since elec & not gas, not happy with the recent recall waiting on parts to come in, but we are a 1 car family, no car doesn’t work for us, but we decided to go with another electric, thank you for sharing, you’re right sometimes we can make crappy mistakes, but learning & moving on is how not to make again….thx for video
WOW...what a horrible experience but glad you followed your gut and had the car checked before your road trip.
I come from the USA. I’ve been living in Utrecht,NL now for 4 years car-free. I love that we do not have the expenses of car ownership. Bikes & trains have taken us where ever we need to and want to go.
former car owner now living in the Netherlands too and maaaaaaaan I love not owning a car
Oh no! I’m so sorry! I hope that she can get out of it soon!
It's called a spoonerism!
. . . tks for sharing this life-lesson . . . I need a vehicle to survive because of where I live, and am looking at purchasing a newer one . . . will reflect on your experience when I do . ..
... and it was grey. so perfect.
I wish you ebook was at libraries and on Libby.
I've gone 5 years car free and agree with location plays into it all. Cheers
it would have cost u like $2k - 2500 at most to replace the engine with a used one at any private shop. the problem is u went to the dealership. never go to any dealership for diagnostics or repairs
Get a scooter! ;)
Hindsight is 20/20, but I would've sold it for parts to someone.
Ugh...
Could've also parked near the ocean or a lake with a steep incline and you forgot to press the parking brake and it just happened to be rolled downhill...🙈🙉🙊
Btw, love the Red Green reference!
Haha thanks for this comment Xavier! Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes! Very glad to hear that you had a positive experience!
love the transparency
the dealership where I bought my KIA (I live in Europe) is great but it’s where my parents live. The dealership where I live is exactly like the one you talked about. They have lied to me several times so I only go there when I need a lightbulb changed or it’s a real emergency. I usually take my car back to my parents‘ place for inspections etc.
That’s really too bad. I wish that it wasn’t such a gamble. 😬
Gotta say, Leah bringing up the Dixie Chicks' Goodbye Earl makes me love her more 😂
GREAT video. We all hate salespeople. They are the scum of the earth.
Hahaha I frickin love spoonerism

My jaw hit the floor when you said that KIA just put the car back up for sale. I own a kia and you hit the nail on the head... mechanics, service staff I love. The sales staff tho...UUUGGHHH!! Recently I brought it in for service & I took a test drive in a different model out of curiousity and they were RELENTLESS! I kept saying 'see that car in the shop? THATS MINE & STAYING MINE" 🤬
Ugh that’s really horrible to hear. I don’t wanna rag on people for doing their job but I don’t like them lol
My father always said a used car is just someone else's headache. I absolutely hate buying a car but I buy the best car I can afford and keep it up & it usually lasts 10+ years. Buy the least sexy car possible they seem to last the longest. Better yet- world get better transportation options!
The Kia dealership sounds like the one in Matilda 😞
Wow! That's a traumatic story! Those poor people that would have Earl now...😱
Is there an inspection that you can tell about the dealership? They really shouldn't get away with this . . .
Oh my God! These dealers are suckers! Thank you for sharing this.
levi: pour yourself a cup of tea
my brain: earl grey??
Awesome video. But just so you know head gasket replacement is not a huge job. It’s unlikely they did it over the weekend but possible. Can be done in about 4 hours by a skilled person
Annnd this is why we only buy new cars in my family. Yes. They are more expensive. However, over the years my family has just be screwed over time and time again with used cars. And the amount of money we spent on repairs of used cars, we might as well have bought a new one. So now we just buy new cars, and drive them till they die. Usually we get 15+ years out of a new car.
Someone out there is now dealing with Earl...
Literally… 🤦🏻♂️😭
I am in shock. The car is a potential hazard, yet you had to think about selling it to someone without disclosing the problems? Really? And you admit that to everyone in your video? You were contemplating putting someone in bodily danger and you had to think long and hard? WTF? Never would have thought that of you guys.
Does Canada not have CarFax??
I'm wondering if you could just return it to the dealership you bought it or maybe ask them to fix it.
I mean, did they offer any king of warranty?
He did go back. The new engine was $5000.
Is there any law in your country against that kind of scam? No safety control center?
I'll have to buy a car soon and this is my nightmare... hate the idea of buying a brand new car (due to money) but... :(
We did a loooooot of things wrong. Buying used has worked for the other two vehicles I’ve owned and I had no problems. 🤷🏻♂️
When you give your car a name the relationship to it becomes way to close.
That car looks like the blue car from the movie VACATION 😂😂
There are a lot of scumbags in the auto industry! My first car was a rip off. Always check car's the history. When locking at the car bring someone with you that knows about cars, ideally a car mechanic. You can even let them pick the car. Always have i backup plan. I would tell you to just drive to pick up the car, because it's easy to change your mind. Here in Sweden there are stories of people buying crashed cars that where reassembled in Lithuania.
Yeah it just seems like there’s a lot of ways to get a bad deal sadly. 😢
Is it illegal to rebuild an engine in Canada without making a record of it?
Nope. I don't know what this guy is talking about.
At least you didn't lose a wheel on the highway> I had a friend who had that happen to them.
Wow. Y’all didn’t test drive it? Look up it’s owner history?
What dealership? Omg they cannot sell a used car without it going through their shop & safety check ! So either your Honda was not as bad as the mechanic said? You should approach that dealership because that’s totally illegal what they are doing … call them Motor Dealer Council on them.
It's called a spoonerism!!
Whaat! Reminder to never buy a car from Kia!! That was a serious jaw drop moment. Ugh what a saga!
Certainly not a used one! 😭😬
the exterior of the car looks decent but the condition of it is just devastating and worrisome...
This makes me want to sell mine honestly
