- Probably the "purest" interception mission in the series. The bombers just try to escape, the escorts do a good effort of distracting you, and all of it happens at high speeds. And as such, taking a "proper" interceptor with tons of speed really is the best choice.
And, of course, the ambience. Intercepting a bloody nuclear attack, and then dogfighting in the fallout. ACZ at its finest. - Ігри
Poor MiG-31s... they are those who truly love the country and dare to stop their allies, even they know after this suicide mission neither Allied or Belka forces will accept them, they got nowhere to land.
At this point, cipher would help them, the canon path in this mission is soldier

@@Komyeta According to the youtuber Ace Combat fan, the canon path in the whole game is Mercenary, but I like Knight more.

this is one of the best missions in the ace combat franchise. the eerie ambience and EMP clusterfuck post explosion are incredibly unsettling. as well as pixy doing what he does. you knew something was up the moment pixy stalls at the start of the mission. then you have wizard one bargaining with pixy in the midst of the chaos off map.

@@ryanjapan3113 the Tomcat was created in response to the new Soviet interceptors such as the MiG-25 and eventually the MiG-31, as a carrier defense and interceptor fighter. It was part of the huge arms race that went on between the USA and USSR, since both sides were trying to get the one-up on each other. Regardless of personal aircraft choice in the game, the F-14 and MiG-31s were essential brothers from the same period and most likely would have engaged each other if actual combat in the Cold War did indeed break out.
The wizard 1 dialogue combined with the audio feedback due to the nuke is a part I always find unsettling. Even 15 years after release.
6:18 cool attention to detail, you can see the nuclear explosion before hearing it, as sound travels slower than light.
Just like lightning. When you see a huge flash, just wait for a loud thunder in a few seconds.

Here it is. One of the most notable missions in this game, and it definitely ranks up as one of my favorite levels in Ace Combat history. It starts off slow and ominous, then it gets fast and frantic, and then things go to hell after the last bomber goes down... All in the span of scenes that don't get too in the way of gameplay. Absolutely beautiful.
I'm curious if you can hack and see what plane Josh/Wizard 1 is flying in the corner of the map, though. Or even if it _is_ a plane (and not just a dummy radar signal for the plot).
I tried, you can't get close enough for you see it, nor for the game to load his texture to the memory.
So take your wild guess, it's either the YF-23 or the legacy Hornet he was using in Mayhem. You can assume the Hornet was their OADF service aircraft and the YF-23 was an AWWNB asset, so the question is weather he had already taken possession of it or not. For example, Pixy was still flying his Eagle just a week before Avalon - though that's always seemed strange to me, that they'd start their uprising without having the Morgan ready.
Can you imagine this mission in a remastered game with AC7 graphics, Unreal Engine 4, it would look fantastic to see the 7 mushrooms in the background, the environment and the interference, it would even look more terrifying
Jesus Christ. Imagine bailing out into this nuclear wasteland in the middle of battle...
The final set of reinforcements feels particularly senseless and terrible if you think about that.
The reinforcements in the final is just for pixy leave the area without chipher following him or shut him down
7:12 that plane in top right corner of the map! I always wondered what it is.. took the fastest plane in the game and tried to reach it but I could not make it before the out of bounds timer hit 0 ... I mean it is probably Wizard 1 since he is speaking but I wonder if he really is there physically with his plane. If only there was free camera or something to check it out :D

Funny story, I found out you can let the bombers escape and things continue as if you shot them down. I found that out the hard way when I took too long to kill everyone who isn't a bomber.
It's heavily implied you're actually engaging a decoy squadron, so it's normal that it would.

I deduced that on my first playthrough. I was like "if this was an actual flight of nukers they'd have dropped their bombs when I blew them up and killed me".

If Pixy had a wife like PJ maybe he wouldn’t have thought the same. PJ didn’t deny what Pixy said about how if the nukes went off then the war would end, he defended by saying I have to protect someone and I can’t let the nukes go off.

It's anyone's guess. They could be defecting, or they could be heading to intercept other bomber squadrons. In any case, it'd be impossible for Cipher to know that in the middle of that mayhem.
A defector should announce himself, like the Yuke fleet in AC5.
TugaAvenger Actually I did some research into the defectors. They actually defected from Belka they made their own squad between the four. Even though they had BAF coloring and emblem, they were technically on your side. Sorry if this is late and makes me sound like a nerd.

Eh, I don't know what they're talking about. Belka invaded Ustio, they have every right to invade back. And the nukes were the product of the Belkan military's own madness, nuking their own people rather than accepting defeat.
Don't forget Belka is a representation of Nazi Germany.

I'm flying an F-14D Tomcat. If you mean the weird, bulbous Belkan bombers, the BM-335 is an original design. It doesn't exist in real life.
Imagine if this happened and we didn’t have the benefit of AC5 telling us that the Belkans nuked their own border.
