    OK, so I got a scratch on the inside of my 50g acryllic from a magnetic cleaner and a single grain of sand. I obtained 1000 and 2000 grit wet/dry sand paper and Macquires plastx. I have a piece of thick acrylic from the hardware store to practice on. I made a scratch and then followed your instructions. After polishing, I can still see the swirls from the sanding, though the single scratch is gone. My question now is this, would using a higher grit paper, say 4k to 7k, and then polishing eliminate this also?

    Hi Joey, thank you for your amazing videos. I'm a fan of your DIY videos and recently finished my very own acrylic tank following your videos. I've got a question for you and was wondering if you could help...while making the tank I did scratch the tank at some places and wanted to remove them. I tried looking for scratch removers but couldn't find any acrylic cleaners around my local stores. I've heard you can use toothpaste to clean the acrylics from headlights of a car. Can I use it to clean my tank as well? Will it be safe for both the acrylic and the fishes?
    Thanks a ton for your work...keep it coming

    6:24 how to remove scratches from glass

  • @davidjohnston1971
    @davidjohnston1971 8 років тому +10

    For glass with minor scratching like he showed, you can use auto body rubbing compound. It's cerium oxide in a paste base, cheap and readily available. Follow with auto body polishing compound, much finer, aluminum oxide in a paste base. Again cheap and readily available. Be sure to clean thoroughly and use separate cloths, buffer pads etc with each compound. Clean up is easy with dish soap and water. An electric auto polishing buffer will make this go more quickly and they are relatively inexpensive compared with replacing a scratched aquarium.

    • @scunnerdarkly4929
      @scunnerdarkly4929 5 років тому

      David Johnston - good advice, and the bonus of buying a proper polishing buffer is you can use it to remove light surface scratches from car windows and headlights - in most cases it will be cheaper to buy than replacing glass components, immediately recouping the initial outlay. Plus of course it can also be used for its intended purpose 😄

    I didn't see much of a difference on the glass, the scratches were still there. But the nice thing about glass is you can always just replace that pane. Just use a razor to remove the sealant and put in a new pane. The scratched pane can be useful for scrap material.

While removing the old silicone - this tank was built in the 90's and had been "patched" - I noticed an 8 inch scratch in the glass which I can catch my finger nail on. Can I leave it and put the scratch to the back, or will it affect the integrity of the tank?

      If your nail gets caught on it then there's a possibility, reall just depends on how deep it is and if you're tank gets bumped into if any. Also depends on the location. If its close to the bottom theres more stress then it would be if it were closer to the top

    Dear Joey, I am from India.
    I custom made a glass aquarium.
    The only problem is - there are adhesive marks here and there on the glass.
    How to clean/remove it?
