Anyone else addicted to fish 🙈 I love cleaning the tank, decorating, looking after the fish and of course watching them 😍 I have a 50 gallon tank and a 40 gallon tank and I’m about to use my spare 50 gallon for a pearl scale gold fish 🥺
I bought a 20 year old 150 gallon tank with monster 5/8th glass few months back for very cheap...it was 10x more crusty than yours..rubbing alcohol works VERY good..that and a blade scrapper..now it looks new and houses my African Cichlids
The tanks look amazing. Great tip. I will try it. I have tanks that have been in storage for the last 25 years. Thanks for sharing. Your channel is awesome.
So glad you made so much beautiful content. Thank you for allowing us on this fun, bumpy and enthusiastic journey with you. I have learnt so much from everything you have done. Peace and love to you all.
I got mine for free. A lot of people don't like the maintenance of fish tanks and then think they're unsalvageable once they're dirty. Then there's those people that don't find it hard to clean fish tanks and know they're still useable. It just depends on the person and that's ok because some tanks find the right place one day...and now my betta has a 10 gallon home instead of his former 3 gallon one lol. He's so happy now.
Thanks for sharing this with the rest of us. Your baby's as cute as a button. Hope you got a really sweet deal on the Tanks and equipment from that petstore.
I know this is about cleaning a fish tank. But when you said housewife gloves without making it sound so negative. I can say that was the best part of my childhood. My father had a good enough job to support all of us so my mom to be a housewife and she was always there for me. I think it's sad that so many children missing out on that including mine. Housewives are the best treasure in the world.
Beautiful words. I wish some day will be a world where all people can actually choose if they want to be at home with their kids, without the need to HAVE to work just to provide. I'm Brazilian, but now I live in Finland. And here is like this. Lots of moms and dads staying at home with their kids. Although my family in Brazil was quite poor, I was lucky to have my mom at home with me.
FYI - the active ingredient in bar keepers friend is Oxalic acid, I have access to this as I also keep bees and it’s good for killing mites. I use this now, in powder form on a damp sponge, it’s very effective BUT make sure you wear gloves 🧤 and don’t use hot water. I’ve refurbished a few old shop tanks and some no matter what you do just won’t be perfect, it’s like it etches into the glass. Well done though, great video, just shows you don’t need deep pockets to expand your hobby 🙂
Thank you for the video! My daughter’s school has a small tank in the entrance that is pretty much abandoned and I’m thinking to ask if I can take care of it for them 🤔 the tank itself is crusty and the gravel looks naaaaasty 🤦♀️ how do you clean the gravel?
I picked up a second hand tank today - one I found on a yard sale sight. It's really terrible but I'm gonna do my best to fix the seals and clean the hard water stains off. Thanks for this encouraging how to!! I feel more determined to make the best of it now ;)
No at bar keepers friend cleans them! I have so many old snake tanks I bought used from people who had fish. And I scrubbed forever with vinegar and water like I do with all my enclosures, vinegar soap and water, never cleaned it, dumped giant gallons of vinegar never did anything! Thank you so much!
I'm thinking of buying a very obviously used red sea reefer 350, and its in good shape its just insanely dirty and hard water stains, old algae etc its a mess, and part of the glass has a tiny chip in it but they tested it for leaks and applied new silicone to that area and all works well, 450 is the offer and I love that, this video definitely helped me and I'm very much considering this now
I found that the most popular aquascapers will use a dish soap without added scents to make the tanks squeaky clean. Personally I use CLR to and a corse sponge or just a magic eraser. Cleaning after with the dish soap to get any residue left behind by the CLR I advise to do 2 wash cycles with the dish soap to really ensure the safety of the fishes
Can you actually feel the hard water stain inside the aquarium? I have the same issue, but I can't even feel the stain. I've tried my fingernail just to see if it would have an effect. Nothing. It's almost like the stains are inside the glass to the point where I can't even get to it. Highly frustrating. Tried different scrub pads, magic eraser, nothing has made any difference. The stains are smooth the the touch.
Gosh, I'm not sure about a permanent stain. I can usually scrape mine off. I have had one (used) tank with weird marks that I probably would have needed a glass polishing kit to smooth out, I'm not sure what would have caused it though
(clarification) I'm referring to: "The difference between white vinegar and cleaning vinegar is the level of acidity. The majority of white vinegar has 5 percent acidity, whereas cleaning vinegar has 6 percent. One percent might not sound like much of a difference, but it actually makes the product 20 percent stronger." Thanks in advance
Having picked up 2nd hand tank myself I found your video really useful also entertaining with the young 1, just made the video a bit more real..... 🇬🇧🏴👍🏻
I'm doing the same thing with a 55, a 10 and a 5 and I'm using a gallon of white vinegar. They were pretty crusty with hard water and algae dried on for 22 years. I'd worry about the chemicals in that cleanser having an adverse effect on the fish. How did it work out with the fish?
Hi! I just recently started watching your channel and I notice in this one you are talking about the woes of hard water. Where I live, we have very hard water as well. I had tried caring for betta fish a couple years ago and really found the water challenging to manage. Do you have any advice about how to deal with this?
Simply Betta awesome. Maybe I had issues because I didn't have any live plants other than one of the moss balls, and just the Betta and a snail in a 5 gallon. Everything else wasn't organic in the tank. Almost every time I changed the water (50%) I would lose all nitrates. ☹️
@@holly2043 But why would you do a 50% change? It would be better to make smaller changes, like 20%. So you don't loose any the good stuff of your aquarium.
Holly, we have very hard water where i live too. Our kitchen sink faucet read 392ppm on a TDS meter...too hard to use for anything especially drinking. Even a brita filter couldnt take care of it so I buy all of our water in jugs at Wal-Mart and use some for the fish tank too. Its only 60 cents a gallon. Also, 50% water changes are too much. You're throwing away beneficial bacteria and causing mini nitrification cycles (new tank syndrome). Do 10% a week or 20% every 2 weeks. In your 5 gallon tank that's not a lot of water considering the gravel and decorations take up space so its not a full 5 gallons in there anyway. Long story short, if your water is super hard, use spring water. It doesnt cost all that much for a small tank and keeps your fish healthy and happy.
The super old nasty one, did you manage to figure out the best way to clean it? I have a super old 150 gallon that's cloudy like that and havent figured out a good substance to clean I with. I hope you can help! Thanks
I have had the same issue with bar keepers Friend it does not remove all the stains, you say the magic eraser works better? does it remove everything ?
You're eye's are really captivating, I've just got one that looks worse than any of those, the silicone looks ok though, the effort will hopefully be a huge saving on an expensive tank (I got it for free), I'm just hoping I can clean it up as well as you cleaned yours!
Haha, thanks ^^ Tanks are always salvageable with some time and effort! And maybe with some razor blades, silicone, and polish. As long as it is worth your time, I say recycle!
But tripods are fun mommy!!! 😂 Excellent video, I just cleaned a hard water stained ten gallon yesterday, I used baking soda made into a paste with water and an unused toothbrush to scrub. It came out pretty good, I wish I had seen this video yesterday though! 🤦🏻♀️🐟
How did you Polish that one that had the haze after bar keepers friend. I’m working on a 10g and used bar keeper friend and even a razor blade, magic eraser, vinegar and it’s still got a hazy appearance
Wow, I love your house, the wood is amazing. Great work cleaning the tanks. Loving your channel, a new discovery for me, making my way through all your videos :) :) :)
I know this video is pretty old now, so you might already know this lol, but you can get more concentrated acetic acid, I believe at least up to 75%. For comparison, household white vinegar is about 3%. I can guarantee that would dissolve your hard water very quickly. That's how I clean out all the thick water deposits from the water still in the Chem lab. It's generally safe stuff, just don't get it in your eyes and you just have to rinse your skin with cool water for a few minutes if it gets on you. From my experience it doesn't burn immediately, but it will be a little bitey initially if you leave it.
I came for the fish, but I have to say; the wood details on your house are terrific. And such a fabulous view! Anyways, for small tanks I fill a baking sheet or brownie pan with straight vinegar and just let the tank soak one end at a time. For faster results you can use muriatic acid diluted with water-but be CAREFUL with acid.
Could you make a video on how you repaired the silicone on the other tank? Just got a second hand aquarium and it would be so helpful. Thank you for the great tips!
Thankyou so much for making this video so needed it I needed to clean a 10 gallon quick cause I got a nasty ich disease in it also very dirty and I remembered seeing this video and instantly looked up thankyou so much!
Muratic Acid will dissolve Calcium buildup in a matter of a few mins -- but didn't work for whatever i have on the glass. Vinegar, steel wool or scrubbing didn't work, going to try a bottle of this stuff. If that don't work, I don't know what to try then. 6:20 Is there something that attacks Glass that looks like its calcium stains but is not cleanable by anything in the market????
That glass scraper looks nice. I couldnt find my razorblade holder so I was just holding the blades in my hand. The blades were not super thin, but about halfway through removing old silicone I realized that my finger tips were very cut up. I was removing silicone from some baffles in a saltwater sump, so I didnt feel anything. Feels like really bad papercut!
i love barkeepers friend! one of my favorite cleaners in my house! i use vinegar first to start dissolving the calcium, lime or rust and then use BKF to do the rest. your kiddos adorable!
i tried the bar keepers friend on my tank and used a razor blade to try to scrape it off but its still there .. didnt even phase it..any ideas how to get it off? you mentioned buffing it off how does that work? also seen some comments about rubbing alcohol and was wondering how well that works?
@@SimplyBetta ya just need to figure out how to do that and what i can use that would be safe for whatever critters i put in it... back to the drawing board i guess lol
What's your recommend for hard water stains on a tank that is still occupied? My boss's tank at work is starting to look bad, and elbow grease isn't cutting it.
Great video, the baby made it even better. You'd be surprised at the tanks I find in the trash. Elbow grease and some barkeepers friend go along way in a fishroom. The price you paid for what you received, well worth it.
I just got some fish from my dd school and the tank is really nasty. I have the fish(betas) chilling in some Tupperware till I clean the tank. How soon after cleaning were you able to add fish and why didn't you use the vinegar for cleaning? I haven't had fish in a long time and really trying not to kill them in an effort to give them a clean tank.
I used vinegar (cane) and it removed almost all the stains, but it reacted to the 10 year old silicone... I noticed it one month after when it started to leak
Super easy was to clean the hard water off is just throw in a bunch of snails. If you have a large tank you can just put the whole small tank into that works for inside and outside
Stay at home mommy GOOD mommy. Thank you for your video. My son came home with a "free" 45 gal fish tank. I told him "there are no "free" fish tanks." I wasn't sure what was on the glass - fish kisses? Now I know it's hard water stains. Thanks again.
i have a few used tanks from 45gals to 10 gals... and i've tried everything to get rid of the smokyness on the Glass, even Muratic acid will not clear it up so its not calcium. Still trying to find a solution other than having to use something very complicated. NiCe Video. PS - i also tried Bar Keeper and it didn't help one bit. :(
WOW YOU DID A GOOD JOB WITH CLEANING THOSE TANKS I COULD NEVER DO THAT GOOD THATS A LOT OF WORK YOU MUST BE TIRED FROM DOING ALL THAT WORK CEANING THEM!!!
Just cleaned my fish tank using lime away and a glass cleaner, unknowingly that after three washes with dawn soap that there would still be a rainbow film left behind from those chemicals, is there something I can do to remove all the chemicals that are still in the tank so that I can finally place my betas back in without any harm leftover to them? Thx for any help.
Is there any deference between the tanks at Walmart and the big box chain stores? Our Walmart has ten gallon tanks for $14.97 I think it is. Is that a good deal ? Thanks.
Nope, most of them are wither marineland or aqueon brand I think and they're all about the same! About $15 is pretty standard for a 10-gal, that is what my local petco and petsmart price them at
I thought she was alone in the house so when I heard that baby giggle off-camera I legit screamed in my head.... perhaps I need to ease up on the scary movies XD
Hey great video and super cute kid. I just tried the vinegar route, it went well but theirs still some hard water stains left. Is it safe to use that chemical stuff? I’ve heard never use chemical stuff because some could remain and harm your fish? Is that true? And when u say glass scraper do u mean something similar to the scraper you use to clean a glass stove top?
You know when Taylor (Sorry if I spelled your name wrong) is absolutely amazing when she can wash tanks with long sleeves and not get them wet.

I will try that barkeeps friend. TY for the tip.
i tried the bar keepers friend on my tank and used a razor blade to try to scrape it off but its still there .. didnt even phase it..any ideas how to get it off? you mentioned buffing it off how does that work?
also seen some comments about rubbing alcohol and was wondering how well that works?
A blade on wet glass didn't even do it??? Woah. Looks like you're gonna need to polish the glass or something.
When I do water changes sometimes I put vinegar on a paper towel and rub the insides of the glass to get the mineral deposits off from evaporation
I'm not having a glass issue so much as the plastic parts. Vinegar is good there too?
Great video, the baby made it even better. You'd be surprised at the tanks I find in the trash. Elbow grease and some barkeepers friend go along way in a fishroom. The price you paid for what you received, well worth it.
Use pumice rock to remove calcium build up. Lots less time and energy and it’s green!
Vinegar usually works fine but I had so much calcium build up that it wasn't really cutting it. Use that and rinse well and you'll be fine
Thanks for the advice I'm getting a 4ft bit 1.5 and it's abit dirty I gonna try the vinegar method
Did it not react to the sealant? Thanks
I used vinegar (cane) and it removed almost all the stains, but it reacted to the 10 year old silicone... I noticed it one month after when it started to leak
If you cleaned it out with some sort of cleaner and wanted to put fish in it after. Would u be able to? Like would the chemicals harm the fish or?
Super easy was to clean the hard water off is just throw in a bunch of snails. If you have a large tank you can just put the whole small tank into that works for inside and outside
I am getting fish this week, I have an already used tank that had guppies in them. Thanks now my fish won’t die :D
You go girl. Spotting a deal, recycling and elbow grease - all while baby wrangling too. 😉🙃🙂
Yes! Thank you!
Hey gal, great work on those initially hopeless fish tanks, now let's get bring back mine from the grave. Regards from Mexico City ;)
Did you end up re-doing the silicone on that tank?
I'm pretty sure I did
What was the name of the white powder stuff ?
Stay at home mommy GOOD mommy.
Thank you for your video.
My son came home with a "free" 45 gal fish tank.
I told him "there are no "free" fish tanks."
I wasn't sure what was on the glass - fish kisses?
Now I know it's hard water stains.
Thanks again.
You converted those old ugly tanks into brand new super aquariums!
4:40 Lol Coffee break #relatable
Hi there.. what is that red thing you used for scrapping the glass? nice tutorial by the way.. :)
What product you used to clean them?
i have a few used tanks from 45gals to 10 gals... and i've tried everything to get rid of the smokyness on the Glass, even Muratic acid will not clear it up so its not calcium. Still trying to find a solution other than having to use something very complicated. NiCe Video. PS - i also tried Bar Keeper and it didn't help one bit. :(
Dang, the only other option is glass polish and a rotary polisher pad thing
Just ordered some barkeeper's friend thanks to this video!! Hopefully it works!
WOW YOU DID A GOOD JOB WITH CLEANING THOSE TANKS I COULD NEVER DO THAT GOOD THATS A LOT OF WORK YOU MUST BE TIRED FROM DOING ALL THAT WORK CEANING THEM!!!
Haha yep, but they turned out nice
Just cleaned my fish tank using lime away and a glass cleaner, unknowingly that after three washes with dawn soap that there would still be a rainbow film left behind from those chemicals, is there something I can do to remove all the chemicals that are still in the tank so that I can finally place my betas back in without any harm leftover to them? Thx for any help.
Vinegar maybe? And a good rinse
+Simply Betta thanks so much, I didn't realize u had responded but I'm so thankful u did as I was still
unable to find a fix so thank u so much
Is there any deference between the tanks at Walmart and the big box chain stores? Our Walmart has ten gallon tanks for $14.97 I think it is. Is that a good deal ? Thanks.
Nope, most of them are wither marineland or aqueon brand I think and they're all about the same! About $15 is pretty standard for a 10-gal, that is what my local petco and petsmart price them at
Is bar keepers friend safe for fish or should it get a second rinse
I thought she was alone in the house so when I heard that baby giggle off-camera I legit screamed in my head.... perhaps I need to ease up on the scary movies XD
Hey great video and super cute kid. I just tried the vinegar route, it went well but theirs still some hard water stains left. Is it safe to use that chemical stuff? I’ve heard never use chemical stuff because some could remain and harm your fish? Is that true? And when u say glass scraper do u mean something similar to the scraper you use to clean a glass stove top?
Is it actually safe to use barkeepers on the tanks? Won’t the chemicals stick around and end up hurting the fish..
I washed it very well and had no problems :)
Thanks for the idea. I have a 20 gallon long needs a deep clean.
Ohhhhhh no you're making me want to grab my old 10 gal and scape it for my moss ball!! I don't have time for this but its soooooo tempting 😭😭😂
but you shooooould
