Well, I feel like such a novice and so brave! I just bought a very clean, used 36 ga bowfront, and the vertical seams look banged up, so I am going to go out and buy the things described in the video, and TRY this AT HOME! lol The previous owner says "NO LEAKS" but I'd rather do this now, than later. @crazyboutcamaro it shouldn't be a huge problem. The GE silicone 1 in this video is just for resealing, which is mainly meant to stop leaking, the GE silicone doesn't have the strength the hold the tank together as well as Momentive RTV100, which can be used to build tanks, and rebuild the structural seam.
Hello, Keep in mind the reseal in this video is the seal that protects the structural seam, I would ensure that the structural seam doesn't have visible wear/tear to it before deciding on just a reseal, leak test too. Also I'm guessing it's large since you've got naysayers knocking, I would go for RTV 100 silicone, despite this being a protective seam I would have the most confidence using this, given, all other factors are satisfactory (perfect stand, level surface, no chips, etc.) good luck!
@pinktutubear Yes it's still holding, it's been filled for a little over a month. Some of my seams were a little larger than I had hoped, but they really aren't too apparent when looking at it. I think functionally this overview should work great for you, I would only say if you want smaller seams be slow and steady with your bead of silicone, aiming for a smaller amount to come out. It's pretty easy, just don't skip corners or you'll be doing it again! Good Luck

@3:10 alcohol+water mixture to clean the edges real good but then be extra careful not to let any dust fly in the tank after this cuz it can settle on the edges cuz the dust will prevent the silicone sealant from adhering to the glass at arbitrary spots thereby creating the bubbles.
when a tank has not had water in it for a long period of time sometimes the silicone starts to separate from the glass, resealing it like in this video is great and will work as long as the silicone between the pieces of glass isn't compromised. If it is, you've got a timebomb waiting to dump 150 gallons of water on your carpet. when the seal lets go the tank drains in about 10 seconds. keep that in mind. If it doesn't hold water before the reseal you might consider a lizard instead...
Nice job on the video. I have an old 75 gallon Oceanic show tank that has a very small drip leak in one corner. I plan to re-seal it with silicone. I think Oceanic was bought out by another company, I guess there is not much of a market for them anymore.
@blazejaganshi You'll want to do the entire thing. Sealing silicone to old silicone isn't going to create as strong a seal as you want. The tank in the video had only a very small leak on a bottom seam, it's worth peace of mind doing the whole thing.
I just picked-up a used tank about the same size and the silicone seems like I could just peel it off with a little muscle...Not sure how old it is and how often tanks need to be resealed, but would you recommend I do it anyway, or should I do a water test first? Glad I came across this, I like these kinds of how-to's that are straight to the point.
@crazyboutcamaro I'm sure you'll be fine, seems like windex doesn't really leave a film that would prohibit the silicone attaching properly, and it's most likely dried it's chemical agents in two hours, unless you used it as a liquid for a leak test. Windex does have ammonia in it so I've been careful when cleaning tanks with it as to not spike anything that will hurt the fish. Hope it works out for you.
@1989calvindo Hey - when I said where the sides meet - I meant where the glass side is touching the other piece perpendicular to it. To have a leak means there's a hole in this bit, but you aren't removing all the sides of the tank, you're removing the silicone inside the tank walls, then when you run your finger along it - it will push down into this area. Make sense? You're removing all the silicone visible inside the tank, but not the silicone that isn't visible where the sides meet.

Great video! My 120gal deep is leaking pretty bad, 3+ drops/sec. I have removed all the silicone I can. In sections there is a VERY hard residual layer. Almost like it is damaged glass surface. Gone through a lot of razors so far. PS-The song at the end... "Latika's Theme?" A version I have never heard though.
Great Video. I scored an old 55 gallon tank for cheap and want to reseal it. It doesnt have a crossbar so I want to order a new one and attach it. Should i reseal the inside first or should I replace the trim then reseal the inside?
@3:10 to remove dirt, debris, oil residue etc. from the sides so that the new silicone sealant will be in direct contact with the glass & won't cause bubbles. kinda like when you remove the the plastic screen guard from a mobile phone and when it gets even a little dirty, it creates bubbles. incase of tanks, these bubbles have the potential to create leaks
@Shinie877 You've been busy! Some might suggest redoing the entire tank instead of resealing just the inner seal, as it sounds like there may be a flaw or split beyond what a reseal can fix. If you do want to try it again I would use RTV 100 series silicone, search web, and allow it to dry for at least a week. Some tank manufacturers wait longer - the larger the tank the thicker the silicone. Additionally I would ensure your stand is perfectly level. Hope this helps, cheers
@xhorxhbush this tank is 48x24x31(t) with 1/2" thick glass. If you search the web there are calculators for building your tank that produce thickness and appropriate safety levels. best of luck

I'm also planning on making a tank from start to finish, videos upcoming, and will be using the mentioned silicone for best adhesion and strength properties. My tank will be 60x48x24t. The color is up to you, however if this is your first time, you might want to go with clear as black makes it harder to see bubbles in seams and shows mistakes easier. Also you might want to consider spacers (so silicone isn't squeezed out due to weight of glass).
I bought a 100 gallon glass tank last fall. I have spoken to several people who say to do a reseal. In one of the corners about midway up going to the top, the previous owner created a 1/16" gap between the 2 panels. Should there be silicone between the two panels or just inside the tank where the seams are?
@gogopod I would do what saves time, with the longer term in mind. I know with my tank, a reef tank, it would be a nightmare to tear it all down again to have to reseal b/c of a leak. Are the seams tattered, hard, or discolored? I did a water test with this tank. This helped to show where leaks were - so I knew to look there after I resealed and to ensure I had a good seal when reapplying silicone.
@TradeMark2003 The tape is just for a clean edge and to help keep uniform spread, corner deal will work. I'd carve out as much as you can, if you're worried about it, get a silicone like RVT100 to ensure it's held together with the strongest stuff you can get.
nice video, I have stripped out all the silicone (for me it took more than 2 hours on a 125g tank). I have RVT 100 Series Momentive/GE (2 tubes) ready to go. How wide were your beads/seams? 3/8" 1/2" or 3/4"? I've heard that most do narrower seems on the vertical seams and thicker seams on the bottoms since it usually covered by substrate.
Hey, cool vid very informative. I began to use the razor to get the little bits and there isnt any realy viasble caulk left. But when your finger along the side you can feel it. Is it ok if I caulk it now? Or should I try harder to get the little bits off.
@madturtlefan aquarium sealant doesn't have the same adhesion properties for plastic (acrylic?) and I wouldn't use it. If it's acrylic you can get weld on and I would suggest doing a patch using another piece over it. You can google acrylic patching for more instructions.
@diezeled RTV is strong, although this part of the seam is often seen as a protector for the structural seams. I think it's probably up to your aesthetic likes as long as you don't make it too thin. I'll have to measure to see what mine was. Did you finish it up? how did it go? I just bought 8 tubes of the stuff and will be completely dismantling a 240g and redoing it, adding euro-bracing too, video to follow.
What did you do for the top of the tank? I started cutting it with the razor and then I realized I couldn't get it off! Did you experience anything similar or have advice for me?
@blakereport its not acrylic,its a plastic,normal plastic,actually its not a tank its a normal big bucket that r use for putting things but have converted it into a tank...
Could i ask when you remove the silicone on the inside what is stopping the glass from moving ? I am guessing there is silicone on the out side has well ?I have bought a 6 x 2 x 2 which has a little crack in the silicone in one of the corners and im planing on renewing the silicone but do not want the glass to slip / drop.
@ilovelizards I used GE Silicone 1 without the anti-mold agent found at local hardware store. If I were to do it again & if you're going to use this for fully filled large aquarium, I would use RVT100 series which you can order online.
@1989calvindo Yes it's possible, do a search for "rimless aquarium" images, they typically have a cleaner look without the additional silicone in the inner corners. The larger the tank the more apt I would be to put at least a little bit in there, it will increase the strength of the hold. But, if the tank has been worry-free without it go for it!
@HopesCharm I'd just buy a new 10 gallon - you can get them pretty cheap. The setup price to reseal is probably near what it cost to buy new. Only if the tank has some sort of nostalgic value would I consider following the steps outlined in this video, just on a smaller scale.
good vid, just have to add one thing for all you reefers out there, spend the money on real aquarium sealant (DO NOT USE ANY GE SILICONE 1). although this caulk has never killed any fish from my experience, it will develop an unsightly film ruining the visual appeal of a few thousand dollar salt water set up (seen it numerous times)...
i resealed my tank almost a year ago but it started leaking again in the same place. do i have to reseal the whole tank again or is there a way i can just patch where its leaking?
If it is leaking in the same spot as it did before then I wonder if the structural silicone is the problem and not the silicone inside the tank. If that is the case then you have an uphill battle getting it to ever stop leaking
I recently bought a 50 gallon and the seems are all fine cept for where the glass meets, there are a few spots where it's like white bubbles between the glass I was wondering if you knew what that was and had any advice I'd hate to have to tear the tank down as I have no where else to put my fish at this time.
I tried this today, but left way too much silicone on the tape, so when I removed the tape I had to resmooth, and it messed the whole tank up... Trying to cut away some excess tomorrow to see if it's salvageable. If not, I'll have to do it all over again :(
hi there, so this movie was great. but i have a few questions to ask..i recently resealed my 120 gallon and followed the directions given on here.. but after filling up the fish tank with water.. about 3 -4 days later it started leaking again.. i had to redo it again? and again it leaked! im getting really frustrated with the tank.. i was wondering if you may know what the cause is and could you give me some pointers.

I recently got ahold of a 225 gallon aquarium that had a small leak. the guy i bought it from did a shitty reseal so i carved out the majority of the silicone in the tank but was afraid of carving out too much.as for the reseal is it necessary to use the painters tape or can i use a caulking corner spreader thing?
hey how did this tank holdup after these years, my 8 month old 225 gallon began a leak in the back bottom seal n ive had it down for half the year now and have been thinking of euro bracing the inside bottom to reinforce the tank but after watching a few of these similar resealing vids on larger tanks im tempted to just try this as i took all the sand out and all the glass looks in tact n the seems have no separations so i feel a reseal may do the trick..
Drew, a leak means structural issues and I’d imagine most would recommend a dismantling and rebuild. Inside euro would probably stop the leak and reinforce the structure but something caused the panes to separate, ie old aged silicone, slightly imperfect stand, etc. The euro bracing would be more like a band aid, which could last for awhile but there may be other structural issues that are in wait. For the amount of work, euro glass cost, and worry it might be better to find a replacement. best of luck.

is it a tempered glass tank? If not and the chip does not go through to the inside of the glass then you are ok. If the tank is made of tempered glass (most from petco or big box pet stores are), the chip is more of a chunk, or it has caused any cracking then its time to trade the fish for a snake. If its just a "chigger bite" then you're ok
i followed this process to reseal my tank, it looks great but a few weeks later i noticed that one of the corners on the bottom of the tanks has a tiny leak, hardly noticeable but yet still a problem. Do i have to reseal the tank all over again or can i just reseal the corner with the leak? ive read somewhere that i would have to do it all over again. please tell me this is not true! , Thanks!
@blakereport i just read this and ,since im planing on making a 100 gallon from start to finish, i'd like to know if i can use these types of silicone: first is a silicone that has a aquarium picture on it and it says that it's meant for aquariums .the second one is JUWEL aquarium silicone- wich one should be better ? one thing more ,the first type of silicone is black in color and the second one is clear, dose it make a diffrence???

No need to take the trim off, unless you are removing all the sides to silicone where the sides meet (basically rebuilding the tank).

Can you use any aquarium silicone glue for resealing? It probobly sounds like a dumb question, bit but genuinely curious.

it ok if I caulk it now? Or should I try harder to get the little bits off.
@madturtlefan aquarium sealant doesn't have the same adhesion properties for plastic (acrylic?) and I wouldn't use it. If it's acrylic you can get weld on and I would suggest doing a patch using another piece over it. You can google acrylic patching for more instructions.
@diezeled RTV is strong, although this part of the seam is often seen as a protector for the structural seams. I think it's probably up to your aesthetic likes as long as you don't make it too thin. I'll have to measure to see what mine was. Did you finish it up? how did it go? I just bought 8 tubes of the stuff and will be completely dismantling a 240g and redoing it, adding euro-bracing too, video to follow.
What did you do for the top of the tank? I started cutting it with the razor and then I realized I couldn't get it off! Did you experience anything similar or have advice for me?
@blakereport its not acrylic,its a plastic,normal plastic,actually its not a tank its a normal big bucket that r use for putting things but have converted it into a tank...
What do you do if the calk between the panes has chunks missing out of it?This is an old tank that is heavily calked and its not coming off easily
Could i ask when you remove the silicone on the inside what is stopping the glass from moving ? I am guessing there is silicone on the out side has well ?I have bought a 6 x 2 x 2 which has a little crack in the silicone in one of the corners and im planing on renewing the silicone but do not want the glass to slip / drop.
@ilovelizards I used GE Silicone 1 without the anti-mold agent found at local hardware store. If I were to do it again & if you're going to use this for fully filled large aquarium, I would use RVT100 series which you can order online.

Yes it's possible, do a search for "rimless aquarium" images, they typically have a cleaner look without the additional silicone in the inner corners. The larger the tank the more apt I would be to put at least a little bit in there, it will increase the strength of the hold. But, if the tank has been worry-free without it go for it!

@HopesCharm I'd just buy a new 10 gallon - you can get them pretty cheap. The setup price to reseal is probably near what it cost to buy new. Only if the tank has some sort of nostalgic value would I consider following the steps outlined in this video, just on a smaller scale.
If small 1 mm leak is there...can we clean 3 inch and put silicone again for small tank

good vid, just have to add one thing for all you reefers out there, spend the money on real aquarium sealant (DO NOT USE ANY GE SILICONE 1). although this caulk has never killed any fish from my experience, it will develop an unsightly film ruining the visual appeal of a few thousand dollar salt water set up (seen it numerous times)...

i resealed my tank almost a year ago but it started leaking again in the same place. do i have to reseal the whole tank again or is there a way i can just patch where its leaking?
If it is leaking in the same spot as it did before then I wonder if the structural silicone is the problem and not the silicone inside the tank. If that is the case then you have an uphill battle getting it to ever stop leaking
I recently bought a 50 gallon and the seems are all fine cept for where the glass meets, there are a few spots where it's like white bubbles between the glass I was wondering if you knew what that was and had any advice I'd hate to have to tear the tank down as I have no where else to put my fish at this time.

I tried this today, but left way too much silicone on the tape, so when I removed the tape I had to resmooth, and it messed the whole tank up... Trying to cut away some excess tomorrow to see if it's salvageable. If not, I'll have to do it all over again :(
hi there, so this movie was great. but i have a few questions to ask..i recently resealed my 120 gallon and followed the directions given on here.. but after filling up the fish tank with water.. about 3 -4 days later it started leaking again.. i had to redo it again? and again it leaked! im getting really frustrated with the tank.. i was wondering if you may know what the cause is and could you give me some pointers.
great video but ive got a few questions. I recently got ahold of a 225 gallon aquarium that had a small leak. the guy i bought it from did a shitty reseal so i carved out the majority of the silicone in the tank but was afraid of carving out too much.as for the reseal is it necessary to use the painters tape or can i use a caulking corner spreader thing?

hey how did this tank holdup after these years, my 8 month old 225 gallon began a leak in the back bottom seal n ive had it down for half the year now and have been thinking of euro bracing the inside bottom to reinforce the tank but after watching a few of these similar resealing vids on larger tanks im tempted to just try this as i took all the sand out and all the glass looks in tact n the seems have no separations so i feel a reseal may do the trick..
Drew, a leak means structural issues and I’d imagine most would recommend a dismantling and rebuild. Inside euro would probably stop the leak and reinforce the structure but something caused the panes to separate, ie old aged silicone, slightly imperfect stand, etc. The euro bracing would be more like a band aid, which could last for awhile but there may be other structural issues that are in wait. For the amount of work, euro glass cost, and worry it might be better to find a replacement. best of luck.

So what do I do if I need to do a structural repair, and how do I know if I need to?
is it a tempered glass tank? If not and the chip does not go through to the inside of the glass then you are ok. If the tank is made of tempered glass (most from petco or big box pet stores are), the chip is more of a chunk, or it has caused any cracking then its time to trade the fish for a snake. If its just a "chigger bite" then you're ok

i followed this process to reseal my tank, it looks great but a few weeks later i noticed that one of the corners on the bottom of the tanks has a tiny leak, hardly noticeable but yet still a problem. Do i have to reseal the tank all over again or can i just reseal the corner with the leak? ive read somewhere that i would have to do it all over again. please tell me this is not true! , Thanks!

Excellent video. I have sealed many, many tanks. Use ONLY aquarium intended sealant. It will be better in the long run.
