  • How to do easy Victory Rolls in minutes. Iconic 1940's pin up hairstyles. The latest 1940's hair tutorial by Tia Semer.
During WW2, the popular victory hair rolls were playfully adopted by many women. The term victory hair was coined by actress Lana Turner. She named her pin curls hairstyle after the aerobatic victory rolls made by some dare devil pilots. You can see it in the film Somewhere I'll find you in 1942.
Soon Betty Grable adopted them and made them famous. Bobby pin brands brought out Victory hair pin sets galore.
It's the perfect rockabilly hair style. Also lovely wedding hair.
All you need is a mirror, a brush, a comb and some trusty bobby pins.

Watching this video made me realize that, based on the amount of work put into them, 40's hairstyles ominously portended the bangs of the 80's. 😄

Nice! Very pretty. You make it seem so effortless. I faintly remember my mother still wearing her hair like this when I was very young. Then she switched over to just teasing and then using hair spray to the point where even hurricane winds couldn't move her hair. 😄

Thank you, Glam. The effortless look achieved in the final product defines elegance and grace. The effort put in to these vintage hairstyles is one of the intangibles Women contribute that often go overlooked and unappreciated. I do believe I could have nearly finished shaving, showering and dressing in the time it would have taken for her to finish just her hair. It looks lovely and I appreciate it.
    Looking forward to your next.

So sad that I fond this video only today (oh god it appeared not so much time ago)... I wanted such hairstyle for my prom (my prom look was something about these years), I thought that there's nothing difficult in it, I went to the hairdresser and asked her to do such hairstyle, but she did something strange and difficult! I looked silly, but there was no more time to do something. Who could ever think that this hairstyle may be done at home...

    Mom used a thick pencil
    To do the roll .
Can you show how to set
Your hair in curls you roll around
finger & pin flat to hear & hold
    With 2 crisscross bobby pins.
Used on short or medium hair.
On your longer hair, in 1945, Mom
would roll it up wet, using cotton strips, like from a man's t-shirt,
, & just tie the end together, with a basis knot. They called it rolling hair up in "rags" !!
... it's easier to used toddler size streachy Socks,
to curl , put tip of hair in middle if clean sock, &
Roll it, like seen here, then tie the 2 ends of the sock
    Together, in a knot,
to hold in place. It's comfortable
To sleep in, til dry. It gives a long lasting curl ! Roll it up a third for less curls, roll higher to scalp for tight curls .

Thanks for this info! For the rag curls, did your mom roll her hair up (like in this video, although these are rolls) or under (like in most vintage setting patterns I see)?

She was born in 1920, wed 1945,
worked as secretary to help Dad through
Pharmacy, & had beautiful hair do's.
.she only rolled hers up to near or above shoulder.
Often did the pencil type rolls, like you did, on
The top, & the full curls hung to ear, or below,
with sleek hair above it .
She rolled childrens hair up higher, & usually made
PigTail with the curls, & we wore short 1950s bangs.
Yu can control the amount &
type of curl by the size & chunk of hair, sectioned & put in the "rag" .
I did my daughters hair like this in the 80s.
Mom rolled her her under, & she had thick Auburn hair .
