  • For years I've just shrugged off this band and thought they weren't to my taste but with everything that's been happening this year I thought I'd give them another listen.
    Here is a metalhead that never "got" Deftones giving an honest reaction to their latest album Ohms.

    Great reaction- I liked listening to your observations! I love the honesty. I've been a fan of theirs since I was about 9 in 1998 and now I'm 32 (also got into TOOL in 2000) They have pretty much been the soundtrack to my life, so I can understand how at first listen, it can be off-putting, but thats what I loved about them; The dissonant guitars, groovy baselines, hip-hop like drumming, the unique cat-like screaming, the soothing vocals. Deftones is an amalgamation of different genres and influences. They have metal, hardcore, alternative, shoegaze/metalgaze , trip hop, post-rock moments in all their albums with their newest album showcasing all of them!
    I love the fact that you want to check out their past albums because you can really see how each album they have progressed and changed, but also kept similar bits. I would say start with "Around the Fur"(2nd album) to get a feel of their more energetic/chaotic moments. Its at this album where they fused the blend of post-hardcore and metal with some new melodic styles that they didn't have during their first album. Then jump into White Pony (3rd album) because thats where they really made their mark. They said, we don't want to sound like anyone, but ourselves. White Pony is the perfect nighttime driving album. And then if you're up to it, then listen to, IMHO, their best album- "Deftones" (4th album). This album is when their guitarist, Stef, stepped up the heaviness and djent influences while Chino's song writing was going way more shoegaze. It's a very heavy and dark album that, to me, defines *the* deftones sound. These 3 albums are the key to understand the band and their sound.
    So yeah, sorry for the long comment, but I always love when people start to "get" it (just like when people get TOOL).

    Alright mate, I started off with your "Adrenaline" reaction video, then came to this... Right, If you want harsh heavy and screaming vocals, Adrenaline and Around the Fur are for you, And alot of the Self titled.. The other albums started to mix them alot [Heavy & Softer] , And you said it in this video.. The way they one second are heavy next melodic.. Thats their greatest strength IMO.. The Ying and Yang of the Deftones are amazing.. Great Atmosphere, But Keep it up mate, Go through the albums in order, i hope you enjoy them... P.S im a massive Tool fan too! Did you enjoy Fear Inoculum? Peace out

    I'm surprised you didn't like Deftones but you love Tool. Usually I find that fans of one are usually fans of the other. I'm in that camp. Deftones are definitely a weird band and they like to experiment with their sound a lot. But yeah, give their discography a go around. I think you'll love White Pony, Deftones, Around The Fur, and Adrenaline. You'll like quite a number of songs on Diamond Eyes and Gore. Koi No Yokan and Saturday Night Wrist are very experimental and not all that heavy. Personally I love those two albums but I get why a lot of metal fans don't.

      I’m kind of in that same weird spot where Deftones are probably my favorite band, but I’ve never been able to get into tool. It is true, fans of one are usually fans of the other. But a perfect circle, that’s my shit. I did watch the drum cam for Pneuma, and Danny Carey might just be what pulls me into them, but I’m still having trouble getting into their style. Any recommendation for the best binge album to get into them? I hear it’s better to listen to an entire album rather than pick songs here and there, that’s what I’m thinking of doing. Maybe I’ll like them, maybe I still won’t, I just don’t want to be missing out on something i might love

    I really really understand the boredom of error as well. I think I like the album as a whole, and people keep saying that error takes a few listens to get into, but it’s probably my least favorite song off of the album. Part of it might be because I hold some resentment towards the song for sounding like it was gonna be super angry and aggressive with that gritty guitar strumming at the beginning, and that’s what I went into the song expecting, felt kinda mislead... but I also just really didn’t like the song

    I hated Deftones initially (still don't like the 1st album, neither does the vocalist). Breakthru was w/ White Pony & never looked back. Many songs are still growers though. They have unorthodox melodies that can take a re-listen to get adjusted to. For example, I bet you'd like The Spell of Mathematics on a re-listen. Listening to new full albums of any band, as opposed to cherry-picking, can be a chore. But White Pony & Diamond Eyes are both feasible. As a singular song, their best may be Rosemary, if you like Pink Floyd.

      Chino doesn’t hate the first album just that his opinion of it has changed over time as he can’t relate to it anymore. He wrote some of those songs as a teenager while he’s almost fifty now. First album is really good, and a lot of those songs are bangers live.

  • @junkyardwillie8320
    @junkyardwillie8320 3 роки тому

    I honestly understand the tone deaf observation, that’s what was a bit off putting to me when I first began listening to them, but I think it’s on purpose. It’s supposed to sound a bit off kilter, a bit off the rails, just a departure from the norm. Chino isn’t going to have that Maynard James Keenan precision, but not because he’s a bad vocalist, it’s just not his style. He has a much more relaxed way of singing, and has his own unique style, but like I said, I won hundred percent get where you’re coming from on the tone deaf thing, although he might be a bit tone deaf in live shows lol

    Also find it kinda funny how Chino's use of extended notes in chords, which is what I LOVE most about his melodies, is what seemed to really irk you. His melodies are damn near jazz influenced. Just love that. Maybe try Diamond Eyes? It's quite heavy and straight forward.
