You know his opinion is unpopular when the comments aren't the same 3 jokes

This was a rough one for me.
Been a huge Deftones fan since the late 90s. Yet...I think they peaked on their 5th, 6th, and 7th albums....which is pretty damn rare and odd. That doesn't happen with a lot of bands. Gore was....decent. Better the more I listen.
But I was worried about this new one. After 5 full listens....I just adore it. There are 2 or 3 meh tracks...but the rest is easily some of my favorite music they've made yet.
Go figure....
Wait.....he loves the title track? It's his favorite on the album?
It's by far my least favorite.
I'm done lol.
I love Fantano and his appreciation and knowledge of music. But when it comes to THIS one band...we live on different planets.

@@avedic I agree, gore took me a few listens to warm up to because it had a strong 80s new wave feel but knowing a little bit about chino and where his inspirations are I dig it. but ohms I would say pompeij is by far my favorite song on this album the way Sergio’s bass just punches through on this song blew my fucking mind.
Anthony was 100% bullied by a Deftones fan whilst at school
Omg, my buddy and I were just talking about this. This guy is the typical dude who could not eat a sandwich in peace cos skaters were around and now he started his little UA-cam channel so he can puke his hate towards the flag band of all the dudes who were too cool to hang out with him lol

“Ohms” is an incredible record. It’s one of the most consistent albums of the year and shows nuance/evolution in the band’s songwriting. It’s miles better than “Gore” and (in my opinion) completes “Diamond Eyes” and “Koi No Yokan” as a trilogy.
Damn! That is why when I played this record I went back to Koi No Yokan and then Diamond to circle back to Ohms!
It's a great album. Doesn't deserve a "3" from Fantano. In my opinion it does things better than Diamond Eyes and Koi no Yokan. A very mature album, and to me it only comes after White Pony, no other album from them is like that.
What does Diamond Eyes have to do with the following albums?

Deftones hasn’t sounded so much like themselves in a while. This album rocks bro, you couldn’t be more wrong
they are just changing their sound my guy
I'm no hater of this album, but it does not sound like themselves at ALL. I understand and accept that the sounds of a band changes, that's all great, but to say that this album sounds anything like deftones is crazy
when Deftones talks about "finally achieving balance", they're not talking about political centrism, they're talking about psychological / spiritual / emotional harmony; they were never a political band in a party-politics sense; they were always concerned with personhood and relationships, health and toxicity, domestic bliss and violence; so "balance" here, I think, is meant in a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy sense; the speaker is finding a space beyond black and white / poison and wine thinking -- it's about finding nuance in older age beyond "I want to live / I want to die"
Deftones has always been interested, lyrically, thematically and sonically, in the polar opposites of brutal noise and zen-like beauty; whether or not you agree, this album is at least an argument that these are being integrated in a more "balanced" whole throughout this album
it's almost like you haven't been listening to Deftones all these years but go off
Holy shit; it's almost like you get it.
Anthony fucked up big time on this review.
I feel as though he doesn't know Chino or the Deftones.
Its pretty obvious thats its about relationships, the flawed ideas we have about love, and the anger, frustration, and depression that come about being in contact with someone or some people who just always bring you down. Idk what he’s talking about either
@@grindcoreninja6527 holy fuck, imagine having an opinion on music. Lmao
Fat Man in Japan One things is to have an interpretation and the other is to make a claim without a basis for that claim. Since Anthony is a music reviewer, I would think that he would have taken the time to look at the lyrics and it is pretty clear that its not about politics. I think that’s why a lot of people are so shocked that he even mentioned the politics as a possible meaning to “finding balance”
Fat Man in Japan I do agree with you on the first part. It can be approached with different perspectives and it can be interpreted uniquely by each person. I understand that forcing people to view the art in a certain view infringes on people’s liberty to interpret the art as they please. Where I would counter is that in order to truly appreciate the art, it would be wise to consider the similarities in themes across the songs and to consider the intent of the artist. Chino has spoken about the songs being about personal relationship and the lyrics do seem to connect nicely when you view it from that perspective. Again, I agree that people can and should formulate their own opinions and view works of art in ways that make sense to them. I am just stating that for Anthony, as a music critic, part of the responsibility of the critic is to not only critique the art at its surface value, but to also look a little deeper and maybe research the work of art, just a little bit, in order to formulate a solid review (which is an opinion that the critic has the right to have).
I'd agree with your review, but then we'd both be wrong.

"Genesis is my least favorite track because the Super Nintendo is by far the superior console" Really Anthony? I don't think that warrants a 3/10
It's 2020 and he still hasn't heard that Genesis does what Nintendon't!?
I feel offended tbh
@izoom he already adressed this kind of argument. Don't compare artists like that, Compare their works with what's already out in the genre, with their own previous projects.
I am by no means a Deftones stan, but the analysis of Genesis alone was so bad it's insulting. What is this edgelord interpretation of very relatable lyrics about trying to achieve balance in this insane gaslit world? I have never disagreed more with a Fantano review.
He's just weird
Fantano is extremely bad at interpreting lyrics and finding deeper meanings from songs based on the context and history behind the song / artist. He takes everything very literally and only reads them at face value, missing the point entirely more often than not. It's been a recurring problem in his reviews for many years. That's why bands who use a lot of metaphors like Deftones and Tool completely fly over his head and he doesn't understand what they really sing about. I bet he actually thinks "Passenger" is about a literal passenger riding in a car
Howler deftones lyrics really aren’t that deep
@@user-wo5tc9ux7u I respectfully disagree. My Own Summer is quite abstract in my opinion.

Stopped at calling Diamond Eyes "bland." We get it, every hipster has the the first 2 or 3 albums are the best opinion lol
Adrenaline is actually my least favorite, I think they only improved from there. This review isn't too great- I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but this review is just shallow. Diamond eyes is my 2nd favorite from them. And this album is pretty good.
White pony is undoubtedly a masterpiece, and in my opinion their best album. But that being said from diamond eyes onward Deftones shifted as a band quite a bit after Chi died. Diamond eyes is an album for Chi and is just full of raw complex emotions because if that. I could never imagine hearing it and thinking "this is bland." I think Anthony cares too much about the mix and composition of a song/album, and not nearly enough about the subject or meaning of it.
I totally agree for me all of my favorite bands especially the ones I've been listening to for 20-plus years get better with age or I wouldn't still be listening to it it's nice to see Deftones still progressing and growing instead of just rehashing what worked for them in the past. Haven't seen one comment that agrees with this review yet he just does this stuff to piss people off and be polarizing and we're all buying into it because we're posting on it lol
Gotta say Genesis is a pretty explosive opening. Even if the guitar riff is simple and “unimpressive” it adds greatly to the atmosphere and overall tone. Just my opinion

So I get if he doesn't like the band. But 3/10 was a very shocking grade for him to give. I thought the album was a 9/10 so I expected Melon to give it a 5 or 6.
Even as a critic, this is not how you approach music in a human sense. This was like listening to a robot failing to comprehend melody and an organic experience. Even by Melon's standards, this is an all-time low.

@@mck7646 Because it is worse. While Melon overhated Ohms, that doesn't stop it from being their worst album. The first 4 tracks range from annoying to boring. You can tell a lot about someone's intelligence on their interpretation of lyrics that can be understood many different ways, and comparing them to what they are really about.
If the album interviews are anything to go by the lyrics are about Chino going through therapy for the first time in his life and learning to live with things that have haunted him for years

But your reasoning is just so nonsensical, far fetched and WTF-like that it makes me question everything about you as a critic. And to call Chino a political centrist by misreading the lyrics on Genesis is pure twitter brain rot dripping into your reviews.
I'm on my first listen right now and the album just CHUGS along. It's only the second Deftones album I've listened to so far and it's really good so I can't believe he's dismissing the album due to how he interpreted it.
I thought Gore was horrible and agreed with TND across the board.
However, I thought this album was a total return to form for the band. Really confused how you could love saturday night wrist and hate Ohms.
Weird.
it's okay for you to just say you don't like deftones, man. i feel like it's only you who feels this way about all of their albums
Oh my god that score hurts, i loved this record so much :/
@Jarod Price it's in my top 10 now personally
It’s widely accepted as one of the best albums this year. This dude’s weird ass opinion doesn’t change how good it is.
@Jarod Price There were SO many people demanding an ohms review.
I knew he would give it a low score, but a 3/10? Isn't that the bad side of the Fantano meter? And gore was a 4/10.........what???
Oh well...I'll still watch Melon any day.
This is just an awful review from Fantano ngl. This is definitely not a 3. It's not a 10 either, but it's a solid freaking album.
I don't know what record you listened to, this is an fantastic album
Oof my melon man you gotta take a break for a while after this, clear your head, maybe not listen to music for a little while.. Really get in touch with your mind and soul and rethink your whole life.
yea that’s not happening
the like/dislike ratio really says it all
Usually idgaf about his ratings, but this one got me riled up smh smh
Usually I have the "everyones entitled to their own opinion" attitude, but man, this is a terrible review.
I swear he completely misses the point of the album, and that rant about Genesis being some sort of centrist anthem is just weird.
@@Tunaboy45 Most of what he's saying here just doesn't compute with me.
@shotonshitteo if Anthony is starting to become pitchfork, i can't wait for him to call the next radiohead album as good as a dead baby.
Not quite as bad as his objectively wrong interpretations of the Glass Animals 2nd LP, but pretty bad
I think it's fair to point out when a professional album reviewer doesn't have anything interesting to say and isn't even trying to be objective- personal preferences aside.
I’m usually really picky about alt-metal, as it can be extremely formulaic and generic, but Ohms is one of the best, if not the best, alt-metal record I’ve heard in a long time. It’s just weird how different it can be interpreted, especially the lyrics on Genesis
just because they're old doesn't mean they are bad
Facts. If fantano stand by that statement then he be a hypocrite for still praising swans 🤣
he never said that, lol @ all you butthurt Ohms stans taking his criticism out of context
I disagree. Whole heartedly.
The problem is, sonically it is all the same song until Ohms bro. It's a wasted opportunity
Same. I fucking loved the album.
@Ivory_ Lagiacrus_YT Ok, if my ears are correct and I'm not a stan, how many singles did this album have? 1...How many "SUCCESSFUL" and critically praised songs did Diamond Eyes have? 4...Koi No Yokan? 4...The numbers DON'T LIE MAN. Don't wrap poop in gold and call it jewelry because it's Gucci licensed. Stans everywhere.
Ivory_ Lagiacrus_YT apparently you’re a stan for disagreeing with the great Melon’s opinion, rather than blindly agreeing with all his points no matter how ridiculous they are lol
@Ivory_ Lagiacrus_YT The best part is no matter how bad the quality is you and the other sheeple will eat it up like blind dumb consumers. If you like elevator music posing as My Bloody Valentine, and are satisfied with music, you are part of the problem and the reason music is dead and Billie Eilish is a "trendsetter". Congrats you played yourself
how tf did this get a lower rating than GORE???????
Exactly
Because Gore is better?
サニャSanny funny
@@sanny8716 heeeeeeell no
@@jonovah I mean, I can see how people could hate Gore and be ok with this album, but I thought Gore was at least more interesting to listen to.
And Ohms definitely isn't amazing
Fantano: "This song is a centrist wet dream" (it isnt lol)
Also fantano: "please vote for the centrist"
Joe Biden: Every centrist's wet dream.
he's literally a democrat he never said that
Dat dislike ratio tho
I see the video, click, see the like to dislike ratio.
Oh no, oh no no no...
I didn't wanna spoil the score for myself, but that ratio screamed 3 or lower.
Ohm no ohm no ohm no
I just hope that this doesn't affect its RateYourMusic score too much. Deftones needs another bolded album
I spunked all over my screen when I saw the video
I sucked all the spunk back when I looked at the description
epic
lol
Send some of that spunk my way daddy

I thought you were way off here Fantano. I've listened to the album a lot since it was released a couple weeks ago and it's got something for everyone. Ambient parts, experimental moments, heavy riffs, excellent songwriting, and a lot of great band chemistry. I have no idea what you are taking about as far as a weak first half. To me, all the songs were solid and there is enough variety to keep me interested the whole time. I would give it a solid 9/10. I could see this kind of reaction to Diamond Eyes and Gore, but just don't understand it here.
“Heavy and bland” ... is that how he described Diamond Eyes... man this dude gets it wrong so many times. He got this one MASSIVELY wrong.
