This album is more of a grower, I thought it was decent on first listen but after several listens & breaking down the lyrics, this album is hands down one of their most sonically & thematically dense albums, right up there with the best. Genesis is a kinda by the numbers Deftones song but it’s such a banger
Thats probably where I'm at. The songs that I liked on first listen I /really/ like now, and the songs that It thought were just okay have developed into likes.
i think ohms is the perfect closing track....most of the album is pretty dark.....the title track got that e major vibe...that confident, royal march, celebratory, we eating good tonight vibe...a flex track if you will, after all the tribulations these guys have been through, musically and personally....what a journey it's been since adrenaline....10/10 album for me
Headless and Error are by far my top favourite songs of the entire album. Headless deserves to get an award.
One of Deftones' best albums in my opinion. I think the first half is considerably better but I still love this thing front to back. Only track I'm not 100% into is Pompeji.
Headless is probably my favorite. the whole album is a masterpiece. Headless also sounds like it would be in a big film trailer
Glad to see you enjoyed it so much, and glad to see all the love for Headless. It really is one hell of a song.
There you are ..
Their best album
My favorite song on this album is This link is dead and the album is awesome!
Headless is my favorite song in this Album.I'm freaking love this song.
Oh and Pompeji is supposed to have that kind of feel. From warm and comforting to aggressive and chaotic. It's like life. It can change in an instant from calm waters to a raging storm.
It captures the dynamics very well, which is why it's a standout on the album for me.
Ohms is the “credits rolling” music to me, when I first heard it I didn’t understand it as a closer, but it clicked on like my second listen that it’s pretty perfect and the only song that would have really worked here as a closer. anyway, i adore this record, this has landed in my top 3 Deftones albums alongside S/T and ATF.
I'd have to listen to more of their records start to finish to really rank it fairly but I do quite enjoy it. I can understand your analogy as far as Credits Rolling goes... because the more albums I review the more albums I notice have this trend of extremely strong climaxes followed by one last song that feels less like an ending. It's not my favorite style regardless but I can at least understand the "why" of it.
Nice review...appreciate the open-mind. I gotta say I really like Genesis and Ohms tho. The UA-cam versions aren't the best for audio quality. I think it was interesting that they released their first and last song as their singles. Listening to the whole album in its entirety changed my mind about Ohms being the closer because I initially had the same thoughts as you on it not sounding like one.
I may be biased as a Deftones lifer but I really like every song in some way. Radiant City is maybe the only one I'm not completely feeling all the way but it's still really cool. My favorite is easily Pompeji. I legit teared up when I first heard it.
Also I see Deja Entendu behind you! One of my favorite albums of all-time!
If you want to really get a good picture of what the song Ohms is, you should watch it's official music video. Extremely abstract, really contrasts the classic style you described into a heavily philosophical dark perspective about change and time. The lyrics are definitely brought out by the imagery in the video.
I agree with Ohms sounding more like a midpoint than closing song, but I think I actually like it that way. To me it makes me want more of the album because you listen to it and there’s this moment of “wow that’s it?” mixed in with the release of emotions. It’s that realization point of “oh the albums over” and the want to listen to it more. Idk that’s just how I feel about it
That's fair. Since reviewing this album I've heard quite a few with similar endings. Someone else described it as less of "the ending" and more "the end credits" and that's helped frame it in a bit of a different light for me, one I'm a bit less turned off by.
That reaction of yours at 9:00 got ne like WOOOOW because I did exactly the same face when heard that part for the very first time and is now one of my fav rock moments I've ever heard, so heavy but so gentle and nostalgic at the same time, I loved watching someone feel that moments as I did, amazing review!
Headless is fucking amazing
So glad someone is giving Headless love! IMO I feel it should have been the closer, but alot of reactors are claiming its the one song that "doesn't fit", but I love it!
What in tarnation? Myself and everyone in my chat almost immediately said "Oh boy this is the shit." Even the guy who didn't like the album.
Personally I say that ohms wasn't a great ending track but the overall end and feel to it kinda gives you a feeling of "to be continued" if that makes sense lol. This was a WAY more solid record than Gore, might I even say this album kinda makes Gore seem like a B Side album in comparison to a lot of their work. I do agree that you do sense some age to the bandmembers on the album but any evolution takes time to develop. As long as something like Gore never happens again...like never again 😐... I could genuinely get into this kinda new groove their running with like when I got into them as a kid lol. Great video man definitely throwing a sub.
Thanks for the sub! Yeah it's amazing how fast I went from "what are you all talking about this is amazing" to "Oh god this is horrible" by the time the halfway point of Gore came around. As long as they can keep this momentum going their future definitely looks to be bright.
I'm sure everyone would agree in this, but they sure have grown a lot since their album Adrenaline. Not just literally, but their music style now has a distinct difference. From heavy metal to experimental metal. It's hands down what makes Deftones so recognizable now. They are the only band that did this and has this exact style, and that alone helps them stand out above other bands. Anyone who's heard of Deftones can instantly recognize them both by Chino's style and the music sound itself.
Dude, I totally agree with you! I feel the same about Ohms sounding better as the first song. Maybe Genesis as the last but I haven’t figure out where it actually fits. It sounds so different from the rest of the album. Headless would actually make a great ending track.
Genesis is just the sore thumb on the album for me, I dunno, but glad that it's not just me regarding Ohms and Headless
That’s your opinion! I love Geneses!! I think it’s a special song to me!
It is indeed my opinion :)
Seinapple this album is incredible! I like how they’re a Yin and yang band how they get aggressive and heavy sometimes and then other times They get beautiful they’re almost like the good bad and the ugly
I loved this album from the first listen. I'm an old school Deftones fan and I really loved Gore which a lot of ppl are critical of. I just think this album is a Masterpiece. It's like a great summation of all their albums.
I had the same issue as you. When I first heard Genesis on youtube I thought it was a little too all over the place. When I had a listen again when the full album came out I loved it and it sounded a lot more structured. I'm not sure if it was what you mentioned or if I just needed a second listen to really get it.
I felt gaslit for sure.
i think it worked perfect for an opener because it's kind of like a mix of all but the albums in one. Ohms ended the album pretty nice also. album was put together very well
So, it doesn’t seem like you’ve heard white pony. Some BANGERS on there
First off, thank you for going back and watching my older vids haha.
Secondly I've heard a lot of tracks off of white pony but I've never just sat down with it. I don't really see myself revisiting Deftones on the channel any time soon, but I can imagine at some point it'll creep it's way back up.
Seinapple sick, and if I like the content, why wouldn’t I watch more, right!?
Took a while to get into but now it's in my top 10 albums of all time, it's such a creeper, I thought it was great when it came out but now I've listened to it over a hundred times.
your opinion was accurate
Gore is considered their worst album by fans of the band who are familiar with their entire catalog. It was created without the full band and it shows. Their bassist, Sergio, was only their to help on Hearts Wires and had no involvement with the remainder of the album which hurt it drastically. That's why Hearts Wires is so damn good compared to the rest of the songs (with 1 or 2 exceptions). It's also it had poor sales.
Chino actually stated that the album didn't turn out the way he wanted, and if he could do it again he'd do it differently. Also stating that the band were going through management restructuring after it to try to get back to where he wants to be. Ohms was supposed to be their return to form but I felt like it was over produced. Like it was big and flashy but lacking depth and nuance.
You have to remember, this band got together in the late 80's and began releasing albums in the mid 90's. They've been around for a long time, been through a lot, and have come out with a lot of terrific albums. Everyone band has their prime years, though. Theirs started in '97 with Around the Fur and lasted all the way until 2012 with Koi No Yokan. Those albums, and all albums between them, are amazing.
Wasn't too big into Ohms. Better than Gore though. That album was really rough.
look ma'am what they meant when they said listen to their past albums, was start with album one and work your way up. that's what they meant.
Ah cool... but no.
Find me a better progressive rock album ever. This is a top 20 record of all time and that’s including all genres. If you don’t F with deftones, you’re ears are broken.
