Loretta Lynn always seemed to make her own rules. Her song, The Pill, is exactly what you think it is about and the uproar it caused was worth every minute. We were just moving into the Women's Movement and the pill made it possible. Really hope you will react to it as it is pure Loretta Lynn and pure woman power!!
I couldn't agree with you more. They definitely need to listen to the pill
Preachers tried to block her song from being on the radio.
Or "One's On The Way"
@@carollittle1059yes because the "pill" wasn't widely accepted back then.
Loretta Lynn was a bad bitch way back when you couldn't call her one on TV.
" You're looking at Country" is a Loretta song that yells it like she is
Crystal Gayle is Loretta Lynn's sister she's a great country singer in her own right. One of her hits is Don't it Make My Brown eyes Blue. Its worth a lesson
I had such a crush on her, and I didn't even much like country music. But she was so beautiful, breathtaking.
Yes. A must
Kitty Wells!!!
LORENA?? It's LORETTA Lynn, not Lorena... please
Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man -- that's a cute love song you might like.
Loretta wrote songs about her experiences in life!! SHE PULLED NO PUNCHES!! She also opened the door wide for other female artists to come through. She was the first woman to win Entertainer of the Year in the CMA.. One of the best in the business. Glad you did a reaction of this one. Keep on keepin' on. BCNU....
Speaking of not pulling punches… they need to listen to Fist City.
"Don't Come Home a-Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)" and "Fist City" are awesome as well.
Don't forget "Your Squaw is on the Warpath" lol and Loretta can say that bc she's part Cherokee.
Definitely need to hear Fist City!
Yes Fist City!! Love it!
@@moontheloon5 that's why she said it.
Yes I love Fist City!
Loretta passed today at 90 years old good reaction RIP Loretta
Loretta Lynn's "Fist City" is another good one with a similar theme. Tammy Wynette has a good old Southern accent too. Her songs range from sad "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" to more Loretta like songs like "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad".
Crystal Gayle is Loretta Lynn's sister and she's a fantastic country singer too Don't it Make My Brown eyes Blue is probably one of her best songs you should check it out
@@tjhunger8644 LOL, I've known that for many years. I aways liked her songs like "Half The Way" and her duet with Eddie Rabbit of "Just You And I".
@@Rebel9668 half the way is another of her beautiful songs I agree good call
I was going to suggest that next. Yes Tammy Wynette is good too. Your squaw is on the warpath is another good one.
@@Rebel9668 Just You and I is a great song. Two brilliant artists in a very classic duet.
Loretta DID do it the best!!! The Queen of Country!!
Adore Loretta, anything you choose of her will be epic but Tammy Wynette has some great songs too!
Was just coming to suggest Tammy Wynette. Stand By Your Man and D-I-V-O-R-C-E are classics.
@@jenniferwilson2637 Along with "I Don't Wanna Play House".
I second this!
Absolutely agree with Tammy Wynette.
"I'm a Honky Tonk Girl" was Loretta Lynn's first song/hit.
Tammy Wynette is in Loretta’ s era. Her song D-I-V-O-R-C-E was a huge hit! She’s got that twang and a great catalog.
Stand by Your Man too
Crystal Gayle definitely was a great singer.
She still is!
Loretta caused a big ruckus us with her song THE PILL.Worth the listen.
I LOVE Loretta so MUCH!!! This song, Fist City and The Pill. All three of these are sassy too. Patsy took Loretta under her wing and they became best friends. Loretta was devastated when Patsy died.
So was i 😪😪😪Beautiful soul taken way to soon💖🌹. Love Patsy. Love all these southern women.
Named her daughter after her
@@vickiekasafirek9096 💞💞💞
All of these people that have seen Coal Miners Daughter so now they think they are biographers crack me up. Some of you act like you've known her all her life or close to it.
@@suicyco4life666 no - it's called she's been a major artist in my house growing up and my mom is from where she's from. Family's talk!
This is REAL country music that I grew up to.
Loretta did a fun duet with Conway Twitty called Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man, that was a #1 hit. The had 5 other songs together, that topped the charts, between 1972-1988.
Don't forget "You Are the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly"
@@kenqb5450 came to say the same thing!
@@reneebush2399 Me too!
Jeannie C. Riley’s “Harper Valley PTA” is another great sassy, southern female song to try out! Also, ya gotta listen to Loretta’s “Fist City”.
her life story is incredible. the coal miners daughter is such a great movie that anyone can enjoy and just love. her catalogue is a must for anyone who wants to understand and appreciate the American SONG BOOK.
I was going to suggest they watch the movie also. It’s a great bio pic, I’ve seen it numerous times.
@@tanya2299 I think it’s possibly the best bio pic ever. i also highly recommend Saving Mr Banks.
You just have to watch the movie!!! It's just too awesome! You will see her from a young girl, before she was discovered. Truly awesome movie!
Coal Miner's Daughter is PERFECTION! Loved Sissy as Loretta (Tommy Lee and Beverly too!).
There are so many wonderful female country singers from the 50's to the 70's. There's Kitty Wells "It Wasnt God Who Made Honkytonk Angels", Patsy Cline "He's Got You", Tammy Wynette "Apt Number Nine", Jeannie C. Riley "Harper Valley PTA", Jeanne Pruett "Satin Sheets" Jean Shepard "Slippin' Away", Tanya Tucker "What's Your Mama's Name?" Or "Jamestown Ferry" They are all just awesome!
Bobby Gentry (Fancy - Reba covered) is who sang Ode to Billy Joe, other 60s country females Tammy Wynette (Stand by Your Man), Brenda Lee (I'm Sorry), Jeanie C. Riley (Harper Valley PTA). Skeeter Davis (End of the World), Lynn Anderson (Rose Garden), Dottie West (Here Comes My Baby). I am just listing their most popular hit.
I love Skeeter Davis end of the world
Harper Valley PTA is a great song. Also D-I-V-O-R-C-E is a great song too.
Get back ,Loretta!
Yes!! Skeeter and Bobbie for sure!
Don't forget the immortal Patsy Cline!
Yea, Loretta opened the library and READ for real with this song. So good!
You should check out Loretta's sister Crystal Gayle - the song is - Brown Eyes Blue
Or her duet with Eddie Rabbit--"Just You And I"
“Why have you left the one you left me for”
@@serasmile6026 "Half The Way"
If you haven’t seen it you should watch her movie biopic “Coal Miner’s Daughter” starring Sissy Spacek (who did her own singing) and who won an Oscar for portraying Loretta Lynn.
Lorretta is as real and genuine as it gets. A poor girl raised in the back wilderness of Kentucky during the depression no less. She wrote her own songs out of experience. Fist city was one of them. Once she played it on a tv show and in the end she was asked was that actually aimed at somebody and as she was walking off looked back and said you doggon right.
She wrote from the heart and personal experiences.
You have to listen to The Pill! Loretta wrote, sang and recorded it. The huge deal was the times. The song was banned from radio stations. It made the national news on all three (yes, it was the olden days. We only HAD three national stations. Minus PBS. BUT The Pill was a huge national event.
I loved the scene in the movie when she caught Mooney in the back of that car with that woman. She said to Loretta "You don't know who I am!". Loretta said "I don't know who you are, but I know what you are. " BOOM.
And I loved, “Woman, if you wanna keep that hand, you better get it off my husband!”
Loretta Lynn is from Butcher Holler, Kentucky, which is coal country and back in the sticks. She is the real deal and, in my opinion, one of the most original country artists around. She was considered Queen of Country and some quarters, still is. She also did some duets with Conway Twitty, like "You're the Reason Our Kids are Ugly," and "As Soon as I Hang Up the Phone" you might want to check out!
I wrote this on an older post. Crystal Gayle is Loretta's sister. You MUST listen to her. Her most popular songs are "talking in his sleep and "don't it make my brown eyes blue"
She did a duet with Gary Morris called "making up for lost time" He is someone you need to listen to, he is trained in Opera but he sings country. He was in the lead role of "Les Miserables" on Broadway. A couple of my favorite songs are "100% chance of rain" "velvet chains" "anything goes" i can't remember if "mamma you can't give me no whoopin'" was a song released or if I just love it, it's cute. I know this song is only on one album and it's funny "i love the waffle house"
Yes, Crystal Gayle! Good call.
I love "100% chance of Rain" and I also consider his version of "Wind Beneath My Wings" is better than Bette Mdler's version
Not sure how I missed this. This beautiful lady is one of my favorite people in the whole world.
I watched Coal Miner's Daughter the other night and thought "I hope Rob and Amber are watching this" and this writing of this song was PROMINATELY featured
Mom grew up with Loretta Lyn... literally. Mom grew up in Belfry hollar. Next to Bucher hollar where Loretta lived. Mom loves her music because she was proof that she could succeed.
Love you Mom.
During the 1960s and '70s, there were three women who redefined what it meant to be a female country superstar; Dolly and Loretta, both of whom you've featured on your channel, and the other was Tammy Wynette, whose biggest hits included "Stand by Your Man", "I Don't Want to Play House", "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad" and "D I V O R C E".
When I was an AM radio disk jockey back in the 1960s I worked at a country station that often sponsored concerts featuring a variety of artists. I got to meet and hang out with Loretta backstage. She was funny, cheerful and very very homespun! I was crazy about her.
Please check out Loretta Lynn's "Fist City" now, she was/is a spunky, tough lady. 🤣🤣
If this was the "sweetly way of saying step aside," then I'm eagerly awaiting their reaction of Fist City. 😂🤣😂
@@scapito I like Fist City even better, and she wrote it for/to an actual person that was flirting around with her husband! She is one of a kind, for sure!
Country Royalty, indeed.
I've heard many truthful voice, Ms Lynn, my hat is always off, for you.
She is such a badass!!
Just watch her interviews ❤️
The very first concert I ever went to was Loretta Lynn. I was 9 years old and she was so beautiful. I remember you could walk right up to the stage and she signed autographs for people after the show.
So kind and sweet. She's a legend.
I think you would enjoy Tammy Wynette "Stand By Your Man". She was married to and did duets with George Jones.
Yes
Loretta is definitely Country, she is from the backwoods of my home state of Kentucky.
Dolly, Loretta, Tammy Wynette, Dottie West, Barbara Mandrell who was amazing steel guitar player already as a child and later a singer and hosted her own variety show, Kitty Wells, Jean Shepard and of course Patsy Cline, these were the pioneering women.
You covered a bunch of ladies I forgot about
I thought Kitty Wells was called the Queen of Country Music so I researched…Starting in the 1950s, Kitty Wells, known as "The Queen of Country Music," recorded hit after hit at a time when women didn't have hits in country music. When she performed, Wells delivered the goods with a country twang and a supple, powerful voice that reached right to the back of the house.
I also should have added in the Carter family women, mother Maybelle, and her daughters Anita, Helen and of course June Carter Cash who married Johnny Cash after her divorce from another country/rockabilly pioneer, Carl Perkins.
❤❤❤Loretta is still the Queen of Country music!
Loretta is the Queen of Country- so many great songs.
So is Emmylou Harris
When you add in the fact that "her man" was Johnny Cash, this song takes on an even deeper meaning. Love it. And Amber... this kind of music reminds me of time spent with my maternal grandmother and I treasure those times. Thanks again. The big difference is that I'm 72. It's the music.
This is her best song, imo!! You guys gotta watch the movie about her life!!
One of my favorite movies of all time.
I was 5 when that came out and I wanted to be Loretta so badly. Love that woman to this day and was lucky enough to see her live 4 times in concert.
@@cyndisanimaladventures6370 She really is a very special person. Love her.
Very accurate reaction! Don't forget Tammy Wynett, who was also a Country Queen and at about the same level of popularity as Loretta. I grew up in this era of country music, it endures time. I first heard this song in the summer of 69, at the age 13 this became my favorite country song for the same reasons that you have described, and this song is still number one for me... BTW- Great job!
Love Loretta Lynn. She was my grand pops favorite. Check out her duets with Conway Twitty. He’s a voice you absolutely need to hear. My favorite of theirs is ‘You’re the reason our kids are ugly.”
She ought to recognized as one of the greatest Song WRITERS of all time too.
Another suggestion for Female Friday is The Go Gos, who were an all female band who were just inducted into the Rock n' Roll hall of fame. Some of ther most well known hits were We Got The Beat, Our Lips Are Sealed, Hed Over Heels...
@Paul B
They reacted to a live performance of "We Got the Beat" four months ago, in case you want to look it up.
I'm just seeing this and Ms Loretta passed away the other day so I thought I'd share this little story about her. I had the honor to meet Ms. Loretta, in the mid 90's. While it was a brief chat I told her how she inspired me as a male. She simply replied how could she inspire a young man in his mid 20's. I said well I've grown up listening to your music seen the movie about your life and all that type stuff, but your song You ain't Woman Enough describes the kind of women I want in my life. Her reply was well if they ain't willing to fight for ya they ain't worth havin. Rest well Ms. Loretta you have more than earned your place in the heavens.
Loretta Suggestions:
"Fist City" (her sassiest)
"You're Looking At Country"
"Somebody Somewhere Don't Know What He's Missing Tonight"
"Wings Upon Your Horns"
Crystal Gayle is gorgeous! Her hair used to sweep the floor. "Talking in your sleep" is one of her greatest hits. I love her voice,!
Hey Jay,
Just a correction. She is NOT saying we can come to blows.
She's saying I'm so good that it won't even get there.
Love this woman and her music.
patty loveless - you'll never leave harlan alive. amazing voice, with bluegrass sound
Another female Country music star from the early-1950s that you might want to react to, is Kitty Wells.
In 1952, she recorded her hit song, "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels". She recorded numerous hits in the 1950s and 1960s. Kitty Wells had a music career that spanned over six decades. She is an inductee in the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Kitty Wells died of a stroke in 2012, at the age of 92.
If you havent watched the movie "Coalminers Daughter", please do!! Its exactly who Loretta is!!🎶💙 Actually, Beverly DeAngelo, played Patsy Cline in Coalminers Daughter because she and Loretta were good friends!!💙🎶💙
Yes! One of the best movies ever. Sissy Spacek won the Oscar for her portrayal of Lorretta.
Agreed! That is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I am not a country music fan at all.
One of my favorite movies EVER.
that's an amazing movie! one of those you gotta watch whenever you come across it
Loretta Lynn was my first female country singer favorite and she still has a special place in my heart. Thank you for getting back to her.
Mountain girls, Dolly and Loretta.. big families and lots of singers among them.. thank you for your uploads..
Loretta wouldn't have put up with Jolene
Correct 👍!!!
Agreed!!!
They called it County and Western, back in the day.
RIP Loretta Lynn.
Loretta didn’t play around, and her husband got what for if he did! Loretta was never a “poor little me” woman, and God love her for it. The Pill is another strong song for women.
I'm sure a lot of people mentioned her but Tammy Wynette was one of the famous country singers mostly back around the late 60's 70's era. She was also married to George Jones who was another "Biggie" in country music...he is pretty amazing too!
"Stand By Your Man" was one of her most famous songs and went to no. 1 on the country music singles chart after its release.
Sadly, Tammy passed away on April 6, 1998 😔
When I was a boy in the early 60s all the girls seemed to love Tammy wynette... I must have heard D.I.V.O.R.C.E a million times
LORETTA LYNN - FIST CITY is a must hear!!
Carol King, Pat Benatar and Ann Wilson really need to be heard on all female Fridays.
@moon lite I've noticed similar non action to bands like Cheap Trick, Foreigner and a whole collection of 60s artists. Groups with multiple #1s, scores of top tens are ignored while minor groups are given 2nd 3rd and 4th listens. Guessing you have to be a Patron to get a song reviewed and they all ask for the same things over and over.
I have a unique connection to Loretta as my dad worked on her ranch she is a very special person.
Some of my all time favorites from Loretta Lynn are: Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind), What Sundown Does to You, Happy Birthday, Fist City, The Pill, Lyin’, Cheatin’ Woman Chasin’ Honky Tonkin’ Whiskey Drinkin’ You (about her husband), Love is the Foundation, Your Squaw is On the Warpath, I Wanna Be Free, Trouble in Paradise, Portland Oregon (featuring Jack White) and so many more!
She is still recording new stuff...shes a treasure
HAHA I knew y'all would like this. Loretta has a great library of songs similar to this one. "Fist City" "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' With Lovin' On Your Mind" "One's On the Way" "Hey Loretta"
Some more old school country women you can check out:
Tammy Wynette "Stand By Your Man"
Kitty Wells "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels"
Jeannie C. Riley "Harper Valley PTA"
Lynn Anderson "Rose Garden"
Donna Fargo "The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA"
She is the Queen of Country
Another legend of the "Old Country" music sound.. "Emmylou Harris - Making Believe (1977)" and still singing to this day.
I absolutely adore Emmylou Harris. She seems to be getting better and more beautiful as she gets older. I see her at music festivals now and she is still captivating.
Loretta is a true country girl, and one of the best women in the country music industry ever! My recommendation this time is Loretta's song "The Pill." It is fun, playful, and hilarious (and was quit controversial when it was released). I think you'll both enjoy it, and it will be a fun reaction to see; just make sure to pay attention to the lyrics.!
You don’t mess with Loretta! She had Don’t Go Home Drinking with Lovin’ On Your Mind, Fist City, The Pill. Then her and Conway Twitty had a series of a duets that are fun: Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man, After The Fire is Gone. My favorite is As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone.
Her and Conway also had You're the Reason Our Kids are Ugly great song
Loretta has a younger sister, Crystal Gayle, who has a beautiful voice. She had a hit song called "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue?" They couldn't be more different.
Can't help but love this song. It's simple and to the point. And it makes you smile.
The twang Loretta sings with is natural. Listen to her talk sometime. She is just a natural talent!
Oh my if you liked this about a strong southern woman you must listen to Fist City! Loretta had many ground breaking songs.
The thing about Loretta Lynn is she's a self taught musician and song writer and she came up with iconic music.
And as others have said, Tammy Wynette is a must.
Songs by Loretta that are in the same vein as "you ain't woman enough" "fist city" "your squaw is on the warpath tonight" "don't come home a drinking (with lovin' on your mind" "one's on the way" these are all classic Loretta Lynn hits.
Loretta also has a sister “Crystal Gale” who had a couple hits. Her biggest hit was “Don’t it make my brown eyes blue”. But Loretta was a queen of country.
Actually I grew up during the era Crystal Gale became a big star in her own right. She had a whole string of hits, not as many as Loretta, but a bunch!
@@Looneyintheboonies I remember her long hair nearly touched the floor! It was the longest hair I’ve ever seen and likely ever will. 👍
Great artist and song choice, you guys. And I'm glad you chose a live version -- those musicians are first class, especially the pedal steel guitar player (the one that's on his lap). Hey, it's great to repeat an artist, but there are some great one's you haven't gotten to once yet. Try Laura Nyro -- please, pretty please--("Eli's comin" and "Stoned Soul Picnic") and Phoebe Snow ("Poetry Man") and Grace Jones ("Pull Up to my Bumper"), Patty Smith ("Because the Night"). Try 'em. They aren't country, but they're all great. Keep up the positive vibes! We all need 'em!
Thank you for some legendary country! I really hope that y'all continue to do this. I love all genres of music, but old country is my favorite. Please check out Conway Twitty, lay You Down. Waylon jennings, Amanda, you absolutely have to do Willie Nelson, Angel flying too close to the ground, and even more Johnny Cash. Country music paved the way for rock music, and even Johnny Cash is in the Rock and roll Hall of fame.
I second your choices
The movie Coal Miners Daughter is about her life. It shows why she wrote this song.
FYI Patsy Cline was Loretta’s best friend and her song Crazy is my favorite and her most recognizable song.
Have to suggest Jeanie C Riley "Harper Valley PTA"
Miss Amber, you used the words "kick rocks" , I haven't heard that in YEARS!! Made me laugh out loud!! Thank you for THAT!! Loved your reactions to this...Watched it 3 times in a row!!
Her song writing was so progressive for her time. She wrote about polarizong social issues with grace and style and drenched in charm!!!!
Tammy Wynette is another one of the Country Queens. "Stand By Your Man" and "D-I-V-O-R-C-E".
My favourite Loretta Lynn song
Love Loretta Lynn and that old school country sound.
If you liked this one, check out Loretta's even-more-direct song about a man-stealing woman, 'Fist City.'
Loretta is a true southern woman to the core! 😊 The way she phrased those lines is what my southern MS mama would've called "being nasty nice", which is being a tough cookie in the nicest possible way! 😄
At this time she was going through some problems with her husband but they got back together. You need to listen to and see the movie coal miners daughter
A lot of good life's lessons are in these older country sounds! Every one can learn from them.
You should try Anne Murray, the Canadian song bird.
Anne was popular in Canada and the US. She was known as Canada's sweetheart. Her voice was pure and she appealed to country and pop audiences. She is well loved by Canadians for her warmth and grace. My favorite is "A Love Song". It is a simple sweet song. It is "pure" Anne.
Awww I love her Loretta Lynn she is one of my Favorites!!@
Try her song "Fist City. It's great
I Love Loretta Lynn. There is a song by her that is a must hear. It's called "the pill". That is my favorite song by Loretta Lynn.
Her song The Pill was groundbreaking. And Tammy Wynette is another good one
I love Loretta
The reason she's smiling and holding up her fist is because she wrote that song right after she had a confrontation with a woman after a fair concert circuit tour with Patsy Cline. Her aunt Patsy Cline were known to be able to handle their husband's idiosyncrasies because they toured with them. ♥️♥️♥️
