Conway Twitty started as a rock star but became a country heart throb , and no there was never any hanky pinky between Loretta Lynn and him, but they were best friends. Try " hello darling " and the duet with Loretta " Louisiana woman Mississippi man" both are true fire.

Speaking of Hello Darling, Conway once admitted that he started one show with Hello, Darling and didn't hear his usual reaction from the audience and realized he was doing a show for an all male audience of firemen.

He has won numerous awards for his music & performed with some of the biggest stars. He had a lot of big duet hits with Loretta Lynn ("After the Fire Is Gone", "Lead Me On", "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man", "As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone", "Feelins'", "I Still Believe In Waltzes", "I Can't Love You Enough"). One of his biggest solo hits was in 1958 with "It's Only Make Believe". I had the incredible experience of seeing Conway Twitty in February of 1988. I drove over three hours in a blizzard to see Randy Travis, who was opening for Conway Twitty. It was a hellish drive. Got into the arena just in time to hear the announcer say, “and that, ladies and gentlemen, was Randy Travis”. So I got to see Conway, and I was truly impressed. More than I expected. I did get to see Randy other times, but that was my only time seeing Conway Twitty. A legend. So good. 💜

More Oklahoma trivia. Conway lived in Moore, Oklahoma for a couple of years. His real name was Harold Jenkins - he was never married to Loretta. One of his daughters, Joni Jenkins went to my Junior High and I was in her music class in 7th grade. We all had to sing a solo a cappella, if you couldn't play an instrument. Of course, Joni played the guitar and sang. I won't tell you how my solo went. I'm still traumatized. They moved back to Nashville and they came back to Oklahoma when Joni was in High School but they moved to Norman at that point. Just so you know, I am not claiming to be her friend. We just had a few classes together.

Another great Conway Twitty song is "You've Never Been This Far Before." And I second those who recommend the Conway-Loretta duet "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man" and the Conway solo "Hello, Darlin'" -- they're great! By the way, I believe Conway Twitty picked both his first and last names from a roadmap. As mentioned elsewhere, his real name was Harold Jenkins.

    • @deannasisson5751
      @deannasisson5751 2 роки тому

The way I heard it, Harold Jenkins threw darts at a map on the dart board. One landed on Conway, Arkansas and the other on Twitty, Texas. Those darts could have landed anywhere, but he chose to be called Conway, not Twitty, and the rest is history. Do you know how T.G. Shepard got his name? He was told to think up a name by his manager, because they couldn't use his real name. He rolled his eyes, paced the floor awhile and looked out into the parking lot and saw 'The German Shepard', and the rest of that is history. But that's all the name origins I know. Enjoy his songs, too. He is real good!

Loretta and Conway used to sing different duets together. Each of them were married to different people, but there was always speculation because they sang so well together . They had several good duets together, but my favorite is. LOUISIANA WOMAN, MISSISSIPPI MAN.
Loretta‘s twang came from being raised in Kentucky. Dolly was from Tennessee.
    Patsy Cline was from Virginia.
Bobby Joe Gentry was from Mississippi and so was Tammy Wynette.
All of them were singing in the 60s except for Bobby Joe gentry. She didn’t come out until the 70s. She’s the one that sang Ode to Billy Joe,😮 it’s about the guy jumping off the Tallahatchee Bridge..
The instrument that you were talking about where you sit and play is a steel guitar. It’s a very cool instrument. It has a great sound!
Another tidbit on Conway and Loretta - in 1993, both Loretta‘s husband Mooney and Conway were in critical condition in the hospital. She went between both of their rooms. Conway died then and when Loretta got back to his room, she said he was still warm. Her husband survived that time, but died three years later.

Please check out Eddy Arnold, one of the great country crooners. His sound of the '60s became known as "countrypolitan" because it was really smooth and much less twangy than traditional country. I think you would love "What's He Doin' in My World?" and "Make the World Go Away." Also, Marty Robbins' "El Paso" is one of the greatest story songs ever.

Loretta was a spitfire for sure. She taught herself to write songs, play the guitar and sing. At the time she was married and a teenager with several kids and very very poor. Her husband was kind blah blah about her doing this as long as she still kept the house up, took care of the kids and put dinner on the table. He always liked her singing but didn't think it would go anywhere. But once she got noticed he was her biggest fan and promotor. Once Loretta started up she hooked up with Patsy Cline who showed her the ropes and introduced her to many in the music industry. She and Conway were never a thing. If you like this you have got to listen to her singing "Coal Miner's Daughter"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you’re gonna hear more Conway, you should hear “Julia” and “That’s My Job.” Those are probably his best. “You’ve Never Been This Far Before” and “I’d Just Love to Lay You Down” were pretty darn good too.

Conway and Loretta had so many great songs over the years. This one doesn't show their true connection as a duet. After the Fire is Gone, Louisiana Women Mississippi Man, As Soon as You Hang Up the Phone. Conway is a country legend himself. Conway had his own amusement part in Nashville called Twitty City. Went there as a kid when we visited Opryland.

It isn't a single song but a documentary on how rock-n-roll was shaped by Alabama. The documentary of Muscle Shoals is amazing on how a little music studio in northwest Alabama shaped rock-n-roll and also launched Southern Rock as a new genre. I knew nothing about our influence, I was raised in Alabama, but it is beyond significant. Enjoy your joy and thanks for sharing.

When Loretta started out, her first partner was a bass singer named Ernie Tubb, who had been in Country for about a decade by himself. He had hits with 'I Could Waltz across Texas with You', 'Thanks a Lot', and a bunch more. Together they did 'Mr & Mrs Use To Be' and a ton more. I don't know if they only stopped being singing partners because of his death, or they stopped so she could tour as a solo artist. Don't know if I even knew at the time. But a few years later, the way I heard it, Conway and Loretta were clowning around in a studio together. He'd liked her tunes and she liked his stuff, when he left Sun Label (same place as Elvis, Johnny Cash, Charlie Rich, Roy Orbison and so many others) and became a Country artist. I want to think she did him a favor, because she was passing Ernie Tubb's favor on down the road, and took him under her wing, the way their elder did with her, teaching him the ropes. However they got together, they had a good string of wonderful hits, just like she and her mentor did. I really don't think you can beat either couple for good songs. Especially, in this day and age! I know I bad mouth this new stuff they want to call new Country a lot, but before I am done with the 2 of you, you will know the difference between today's music, the 1980's Country and the good stuff from before the '70's. By the way, this duet song has always been my favorite of theirs. God bless you and keep you strong!

Conway Twitty's real name was Harold Jenkins. In 1956 he recorded for Sun Records under his real name, however Sam Phillips didn't release any of those recordings at that time (they've been released since). He took his stage name from a road map Conway Arkansas and Twitty Texas. His 1st chart hit was Give Me Some Lovin' on Mercury Records in 1957. He was known as Conway Twitty by then. That song was a rerecording of one of Sun rockabilly recordings but done in a slower beat.

Glad you’re listening and enjoying the different genres, of the world of music. Try to remember the older music, no matter the type you like it’s real music. No mixing, no computers cleaning it up. Just real raw music, not any lip sync. If they made a live mistake, oh well better luck next time. That’s why I love the older music, Heavy Metal, Motown, Country and all other genres even God forbid Polka. Always listening from Panama City Florida, USA. 🇺🇸

You guys need to watch the movie about Loretta Lynn starring Cissy Spacek, “ Coal Miner’s Daughter” She did all her own singing on the soundtrack; which is one of the reasons she won the Oscar, for her role. The drummer, Levon Helm, from the group, whom you have reacted on “The Band” plays her father, in the film.

I think you guys would enjoy some Conway Twitty. His voice is actually a powerful one. Lots of grit in it. His catalog can offer you anything from his earliest rock n roll sound to duets with Loretta, to twangy at its finest, or soulful and bluesy. He did a country version of “Slow Hand” that was great. I think you’d both like him a lot.
