When we lost Pavarotti, we lost one of the greatest voices in the world. He was magical, beautiful, & a gift from God. I love you, Luciano. Sing with the angels, my friend.
And yet less than a hundred years ago, opera was very much a performance for the everyday public, not only the elite. My Italian parents were poor as church mice, but would go to the opera while courting. Probably not in the best opera houses and probably not the best seats, but it was far from entertainment for just the "elite". Maybe that was just the Italy of the 50's. But my father was as blue collar as you could get and he had a massive collection of Opera records. Different era, different culture, i suppose. But yes, Pavarotti and his divine voice transcends time and music.
@@helowgaes7544 I love opera and I am not "elite". My brother is a blue collar fitter and turner who works shifts in a Steel works and he listens to opera when he's in the mood. Because when it's done well, it's absolutely beautiful. He also loves Elvis and Queen and a tonne of other artists. It depends on what you've been raised on. On what appeals to your ear. Doesn't make it just for the "elite". At least not in my experience.
This is a misconception. Opera was never elite. Going to the opera or going to the theatre was like going to the cinema nowadays. If you think about the story of Turandot, it is similar to a romance film today.
i was dying in bed from a fever and this man started singing and i immediately started feeling better .. the presence of god was with this man at all times
I saw him only once in Genoa, Italy, my hometown. I didn't want to but my grandparents insisted, they were both partisans who fought Mussolini, hard people, "you have to see the Maestro. One day you will tell it to your grandchildren". They were right and I am. I miss them both like the sun.
if you notice his face at the end of this amazing performance, it's almost like he said to himself... "that's it, I did it, that was my piece I will be forever remembered for". Love it...
I'm right there with you Nathaniel. After experiencing this magnificent performance over and over again, I just wonder by what basis 1100 people would thumb it down. Souless, depraved, ignorant, jealous?? That type of response defies reality.
That was more than a look of I hit a perfect note. That was a look of I’m not believing what I’m seeing. He sang so perfectly to God I think Jesus appeared before him.

It is otherworldly. I also adore his rendition of Donna non vidi mai from Manon Lescaut at Hyde Park, before Diana, Princess of Wales in the pouring rain.
i listen to all sorts of genres and I can say without doubt this is the most emotional performance I have ever seen, reduces me to tears of joy every time.
I have watched several versions of this song. None come close to this rendition. Edit - I’ve watched even more renditions by the great tenors, and up and coming. One thing stands out from with Pavarotti. His voice is the focus and extension of the orchestra, versus being drowned out by the orchestra. I haven’t seen anyone perform this song with as much power without their voice being overwhelmed by the orchestra in all or at least part of the song. Not Pavarotti. His voice is actually verging on overpowering the orchestra but he reins it in with perfect pitch and harmony.
In case anyone has wondered what he is singing, here's the English translation: Nobody shall sleep! Nobody shall sleep! Even you, oh Princess, in your cold room, watch the stars, that tremble with love and with hope. But my secret is hidden within me, my name no one shall know... No... No! On your mouth, I will tell it when the light shines. And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine! (No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.) Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

For those who are curious about the story behind this piece: it is an aria from the opera Turandot by Puccini. It talks about this princess named Turandot that doesn't want to marry anyone so she establishes this strange rule that every man that want to marry her has to solve 3 enigmas and if they fail one they will be executed. Many men tries and die, but one day this man comes from a city far far away and nobody knows him or his name. He solves the 3 enigmas, so the princess has to marry him but, as I said, she doesn't want to be engaged with anyone. So her future husband gives her a chance: if the princess will found out his name before the sun arise in the sky he will refuse to marry her. This is why they sing "Nessun dorma" (Nobody sleeps) because everybody has to help the princess discover this name. Then he sings "Il mio mistero è chiuso in me, il nome mio nessun saprà" (my mistery is closed in me, nobody will know my name) and then other prhases in which he asks to the moon and the stars to go away so that the morning will come, and by the end he sings "e all'alba vincerò! Vincerò! VINCERÒ!" (and in the morning I will win! I will win! I WILL WIN!) because he is sure that there is no way anybody in all the reign knows his name. This was very simplified but that's it IMPORTANT EDIT: I made a mistake, I'm sorry. By the end he sings "E all'alba vincerò! Vincerò! VINCERÒ!" because Calaf (that's the name of the man) wants to tell his name to the princess Turandot by himself while kissing her, so that she will choose to marry him because she loves him and not because she has to. I'm so sorry
I thought the “victory” he foresaw was that at that moment he decided to tell her his name...then his love for her would be victorious despite her choice with what to do with it.
He was simply superb. I'm from Modena too, and I've met him many many times around the city and in some very typical, old fashioned and some almost unknown restaurants we both used to love. When I was meeting him I used to salute him with just one word: "Maestro..." and he always smiled and saluted back, like a true lord. He was one of the kindest man I've ever knew, always had a nice word for everyone. I don't know why I'm writing this right now, after all these years... nostalgia, I guess.
To be honest he wasn't superb in this perfomance, the real opera is different, Pavarotti singing the real opera is different. Turandot never been the cup of tea of Pavarotti, he didn't have the proper voice to sing it. Franco Corelli was superb. This is a performance for a pop audience, made without proper training etc.., an exibition for those people who love Bocelli and Il Volo, I bet they're shocked by a real opera tenor like Pavarotti.

At this point in his career, Luciano had probably sung this aria a thousand times, but look at the passion in his face at the end. Never be another like him.
Each time he sings this or any aria it is like the first time. And yes, look at his face and you will see.

Even at the start, his whole face changes, he is already feeling it...you see it kick in..
Yeah those facial expressions at the end were extremely moving,
Yes....the end when he finally breathed...it was as if he gave it his all and had to remember that he needed oxygen to live....I love his passion....you don't see that anymore from artists.....something Spiritual about that!
I will forever regret not being able to see Pavarotti performing live, but at the very least, I can watch these videos over and over.
I’m a 65 year old black man lived in the hood most of my life. This is only the second opera I have ever heard, introduced to me by my Italian coworker and lifelong friend. With no disrespect to the many great singers of different genres in my lifetime, this is the greatest performance I have ever heard. I’ve heard it 50 plus times and it always brings me near tears.

He took the opera from the elite to the public and we will be always appreciated for that
And yet less than a hundred years ago, opera was very much a performance for the everyday public, not only the elite.
@@JisforJeniusbut opera its literaly not public comsumtion bro just like any song genre like pop u know?
@@helowgaes7544 I love opera and I am not "elite". My brother is a blue collar fitter and turner who works shifts in a Steel works and he listens to opera when he's in the mood. Because when it's done well, it's absolutely beautiful. He also loves Elvis and Queen and a tonne of other artists. It depends on what you've been raised on. On what appeals to your ear. Doesn't make it just for the "elite". At least not in my experience.
This is a misconception. Opera was never elite. Going to the opera or going to the theatre was like going to the cinema nowadays.

Dude, if you had a voice like that, we wouldn't _want_ you to shut up. =)

This was very simplified but that's it
IMPORTANT EDIT: I made a mistake, I'm sorry. By the end he sings "E all'alba vincerò! Vincerò! VINCERÒ!" because Calaf (that's the name of the man) wants to tell his name to the princess Turandot by himself while kissing her, so that she will choose to marry him because she loves him and not because she has to. I'm so sorry
Thanks
