Gregg wrote this song when he was 17. He kept it in his back pocket because he couldn't think of a name for the girl. He knew it had to be three cilybles. He thought of Barbara but no. Then while the Allman brothers were gaining traction and living together in one big house with girl friends and wives. Gregg headed to a convenience store to pick up some basics for everyone. It was his turn to go grocery shopping. While in the store there was the clerk and a mother and her little daughter. While shopping Gregg saw this little girl running up and down the aisles being a little girl. The girls mom called out for to find her. Her name was melissa. That's how was able to finish this song.
A gypsy is a nomad. The rock and roll and blues musicians had a fondness for travelers. They traveled for their music in the bands. So they relate to the gypsy lifestyle. Melissa is the gypsy’s muse. He has a restless soul. But she is his anchor. And the freight train is blues symbol of having a restless spirit. The freight trains shows up in countless blues and rock songs, and it fits well with the gypsy theme. In America, there is a counterculture of “train riders:” These people travel the country illegally for free on freight trains. They are also often referenced in rock and blues songs, in an empathetic and poetic way. They are singing about the blues lifestyle. Blues music was born of pain and suffering in the cotton fields worked by slaves. It’s a fascinating cultural phenomenon. The Allman brothers brought old blues music from the 1920’s and 1930’s into the mainstream of 1970’s rock n roll. Some of their songs are 100 years old.
The 11th chords cycling over the verse are so lovely. He recorded this song with his brother, Duane, before The Allman Brothers Band was formed, and then rerecorded after Duane died, with Dickey Betts playing the beautiful guitar in this version.
One of my all-time favorite bands, and maybe America’s best ever!… Happy that you heard two ends of the spectrum from them, the soft and beautiful Melissa to the rocking Whipping Post… Next, you MUST listen to One Way Out (Live) from the original Fillmore East live recording. Guaranteed you will love it!
To me having grown up during this era, this song represents the true soul of the Alman Brothers. Such a beautiful sincere song about a special woman. I'm 67 and am married for 38 years to my "Melissa".
The Allman Brothers Band is a band that can safely be called an under-appreciated one. Melissa is an incredible song. Their album Eat A Peach is iconic. Check out their song "Blue Sky." Will blow you away.
Carol got this song from the very start. The ABB is perhaps the very best at drawing one into their undeniable groove and soul. The depth of emotion that went into this song is felt by those who can sense it.
This dude hit the jackpot. Respect. As good as the Allmans were on their recordings, they were at another level as a live band. I strongly urge you to check out some of the live recordings, particularly the classic line-up. Anything from the 71 Fillmore East recordings should send you to bed happy.
Gregg had such a voice. Some bands are still as relevant now as they were then. The Allman Brothers are more relevant now. Gregg's LP "Laid Back" is definitely worth a reaction. "These Days" originally by Jackson Brown, is done by Gregg, and it is my favorite. They were roommates once.
This song brings me to tears because me and my family would get together every year and jam this is one of the songs we would pick. Its nothing better than having 6 acoustic perfectly tuned to each other and playing this song. We also did another Allman Brothers song called Jessica just an instrumental but very beautiful and satisfying to play. All my family is gone now but still have them beautiful memories 😢
I saw The Allman Brothers live at an outdoor concert in May of 1979. Bonnie Raitt was the opening act. They played at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst spring concert at the football stadium. Weather was great and so was the concert. You should check out a band called The Warning. They're a power rock trio, three sisters from Mexico, and write and perform great music. I've been obsessed since I first heard one of their songs last October. Everything they do is great but if you want a specific suggestion, start with their performance of Evolve at the MTV VMA's last September.
Like your reactions and hope you do more of the Allman Brothers. Stormy Monday, In Memory of Elisabeth Reed both from live at Fillmore East, to name a few .
I think his spirit went back home to Melissa after he died. Allman Brothers have a ton of hit songs. The first 4 albums are gold. If you tell me what your mood is, I can recommend a choice Allman Brothers song.🙂
Their most beautiful, and amazing song is the Live version or "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" from their Fillmore east album, from 1970..It is a 13 min. long instrumental, but don't let that deter you..You will be sad it wasn't longer. It is that incredible!..I'm 67, and the first time I saw them live I was 14. I've been a fan since..I hope you listen. Enjoy!
At the risk of complicating a very complicated history: you should hear some Tedeschi-Trucks band songs, and keep listening to Allman Brothers songs. Derek Trucks is the nephew of Butch Trucks, a founding member of the Allman Brothers. Derek was in the Allman's earlier, at a later stage of their history. Some people think he's the greatest slide guitarist ever, similar to what they thought about Duane Allman back in the day. Susan Tedeschi is as fine a blues and soul singer as there is around. Band is great, and similar to the Allmans, hard to describe. Blues, jazz, soul, modern classical, a bit of country, frankly whatever they want to play they play. And they absolutely kill it live, they're not pretenders. And historically, would advise you to hear all of Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore East to help understand how great they were.
Thank you for your reaction, you two 🤘. Please consider listening to Midnight Rider, Statesboro Blues, No Way Out, Blue Sky, Ramblin Man. live versions if available. New subscriber. ☮🖤🤘
So much goodness from the Brothers... and their progeny, Govt. Mule and the Tedeschi Trucks band. Who are still producing some of the best music out there. You guys are kinda awesome by the way 👋😘👍
You two might like this song, “Southern Accents” by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. He, the Van Zant & Allman Brothers grew up within a 100 miles of each other & were all part of the Jacksonville music scene in the 70s. Here’s Tom’s original music video. ua-cam.com/video/egwBm5I9GBA/v-deo.html He has a treasure trove of other songs but this a good 1st look.
Guys please listen without constant comments. You will enjoy the song so much better. The one thing I know for sure is not to return to your channel sorry you ruined it.
I like your reaction videos but here's a listening tip; When reacting to a song for the first time, never read along with the lyrics. You miss so much melody and soul when you're mind is busy reading.
proposed to my wife at an Allman bros. concert in 1970, named my daughter Melissa, and we're still grooving on them together 52 years later
How fucking awesome is this?
Lucky you, lucky her, lucky Melissa...
Dude thats so freaking awesome. Congrats and many more
Named my daughter Jessica.
Far out man.

That was articulated beautifully🤔👏👏
You nailed it!

A beautiful classic. My wife's name is Melissa....soo I have a special reason to love this one.😊

In that whole double album there not one bad song, it is thought by many to be best live recording ever done.
And after that, Stormy Monday.
Dickey Betts "singing" guitar makes this so special
To me having grown up during this era, this song represents the true soul of the Alman Brothers. Such a beautiful sincere song about a special woman. I'm 67 and am married for 38 years to my "Melissa".
Great reaction! Hello from Lebanon, Tennessee where Greg and Duane Allman went to a military school here for a short time.

MELISSA is my favorite song and drove my car in the beautiful Virginia roads in USA. I had this playing on my car stereo. Good Times.
Carol got this song from the very start. The ABB is perhaps the very best at drawing one into their undeniable groove and soul. The depth of emotion that went into this song is felt by those who can sense it.
Mellissa is my mother's name. This is her favorite song. The name is from the greek word for "honeybee".
Beautiful Carol and the song too of cours.

My favorite version of Melissa is on the David letterman show, "Live" with Dickie Betts playing lead acoustic..
I'd recommend "Dreams" by TABB next .... ;-)
It's from their debut album -- also titled TABB -- the whole album is nothing but perfection . . . .
All of the almond bread. All the almond brothers songs are good. That's all good if it's got almond brothers by i'm down there it's good
Brothers of the road. Others up the road the song That's a good one brothers are the road by the armand
The return of "Eargasmic!" Just the best!!! 💛
One of my favorite bands of all time. You’ve just unlocked a deep, deep well of incredible music.
The good music is ancient.
Multi-Colored Lady
@@danewilliams3552 Another good one.
When I hear this...me too. ❤
I had a gorgeous St Bernard named Sweet Melissa after this song. I miss that sweet dog✌️❤️💔

It seems in life; we all go on moving forward to reach or find that something. No matter you always remember a girl like Melissa.
You two are wonderful
Back at youuuu!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Aint Waistin' Time No More THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND recommended
Absolutely love this song, and Gregg's voice.
Named my youngest daughter (now 31) after this masterpiece.

Your so beautiful you can call yourself what ever you want. YOU HAVE ONE LUCKY HUSBAND
Dickey Betts is a great southern/ blues guitarist, a southern rock legend.
No other guitarist can out perform Betts' subtle vibrato on this song. Not Mick Taylor or Peter Green. Pure genius.

Chuck Berry sings a song named Carol.

My name is Melissa❤
Check out the Live Acoustic version. 😎
Caroline is also a beautiful name.
'These days" Gregg Allman
Please REACT to The Allman Brothers Band ‘ONE WAY OUT’ from the LIVE AT FILLMORE EAST DELUXE but it’s also on EAT A PEACH. Lots of energy!
This is not about the song but Carol is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen
Listen to the high guitar notes. 'Melissa' is Greek for 'bee'
Good girl
💞💯
'In Memory of Elisabeth Reed'.....
The song seems simple to me. A rambling man on the road with a woman who keeps bringing him "home"
Your classic on the road song
He meant that the freight train cars that hes riding in,all look the same, not the cars on the road.
freight train cars or.... um... people he meets on the road?
More ABB songs please, sweet Melissa. lols
You really need to listen to John Denver, Annie's song. One of the best love songs ever.

Sky Dog
In short, a ramblin man just needs the right girl to get him to plant his feet.
My EX's name...She wasn't so sweet..😂
