@@phila3884 Dickie knew it would not be Allman Brothers without some great slide guitar so he purposely started playing more slide to fill that loss in the band. He also played it a lot like Duane would have.

Dickie was on guitar. Sadly, Duane lost his life in October 1971, and bass player Berry Oakley died approximately a year later. Both were 24 years old.
Back story is that Gregg Allman overheard a woman calling her daughter's name, ( Melissa) in a grocery store, and thought it was a beautiful name-- and he was inspired to write this gorgeous song...
He pretty much had the song finished except for the name and a few other lyrics. The working title before his fateful trip to the grocery store was Delilah. "It's pretty good-for a love song. It ain't rock and roll that makes me move my ass." - Duane Allman
He wrote that in Pensacola they used to play a gig out on Pensacola Beach at the old Spanish village, the sandpipers would be the opening act sometimes an all girl Pensacola band
Gregg Allman told a story about this beautiful song to an interviewer. He wrote the whole song without a female’s name for the title. He knew the name had to have three syllables. He was stumped. He went to a store for beer. He said it was his turn to buy it for the band. A little girl was running around the store. He saw her mom looking for the girl, walking up and down the aisles calling, you guessed it, MELISSA, MELISSA!!!
Yes the basic song came long before the name. In another interview, Gregg mentions that his brother Duane really like it. On occasion when the band was just chilling in the 'big house', Duane used to ask Gregg, "Hey man, play that one song about that girl". The rest is history.
What a beautiful mournful song. Duanne loved this song and unfortunately he never got to play on it. He died before this song was finally recorded. This was played at his funeral. 😞
I last played this song years ago when my band held a fund raiser for my friends sister "Melissa" who had stage 4 cancer. She died three weeks later. Hearing it now makes me emotional.
Duane was a session musician for years before building his own band. Look up the banger 'Loan Me A Dime' by Boz Scaggs, Duane Allman & the Memphis Horns.
"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" if you haven't yet reacted to it. The Allman Brothers did a free, outdoor, lunchtime concert on my university campus in California - - must have been about '69 or '70.
One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever recorded, and my very favorite from the Allman Brothers. It instantly brings back some melancholy memories I don't mind reliving.
I've been playing guitar for 50 years and I end every one of my practice sessions with this song. The chords are incredibly beautiful and I never get tired of playing them.
Dickey Betts on Guitar for this one , because Duane had been killed only weeks earlier from when this was recorded for their album "Eat a Peach" , a tribute to the bands fallen brother who was quoted as saying , "Whenever I'm in Georgia , I Eat a Peach for Peace ."
Duane recorded a demo of this song with his brother and Butch Trucks in '68. They started recording the released version the day after Duane's funeral.
@@willdwyer6782 I have the CD of the bands Live show from Stony Brook which has a take of "Blue Sky" on it with Duane . It's an interesting listen , from the point of view that we know how the studio version came out & what it sounds like . On the Stony Brook CD, it's obvious that Duane & Dickey were still working on the solo's that made it to the studio recording .
After a quick bit of research on the internet here is what I found out about the song Melissa: according to Wikipedia - "Dickey Betts, an iconic rock guitarist, played lead guitar on the Allman Brothers Band's song "Melissa". Betts created the song's instrumental backing after Gregg Allman brought the song to the studio the day after his birthday in December 1971. The band recorded "Melissa" that afternoon at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida. The song was released in February 1972 on the album Eat a Peach, which also featured Betts' song "Blue Sky". Some say Betts' guitar lines on "Melissa" are graceful and lyrical, and may be his best studio playing." Some of those very sweet notes Amber talked about were played while using a volume pedal. The guitarist would pluck the note with the volume essentially off and them would press on the volume pedal, (like a gas pedal), and the volume would then increase making the sound appear to the listener as if it's floating out from the ether. Another excellent example of this use of the volume pedal by Dickey Betts is the beatiful song by the Allman Brothers called "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed". I highly recommend it! Listen to or watch the version from the album titled "Live At Fillmore East". You'll get to hear Dicky do a solo first followed by solo by Greg Allman followed by a solo by Duane Allman. Excellent!
Brought to the studio in the morning and recorded that afternoon. Geez. They spend months and months on songs today and none of them can touch this one in its beauty and simplicity. What went so wrong?

When my niece was like six years old, she heard this song, and I told her they wrote that song for you and for many years she still thought that song was hers. Love my niece and love this song.

This is absolutely the song where Dickey became THE lead guitarist for the band. The history of the ABB is a long, tragic, twisting road, with many lineup changes, breakups, addictions, rehabs, legal woes, and all things in between. The mere fact that they persevered and came out the other side, with a finally stable lineup featuring Oteil, Derek, and Warren, along with Butch, Jaimoe, Marc, and Greg is nothing short of remarkable! The demo track was recorded with Duane’s slide guitar but the version of Eat a Peach was recorded six week after Duane’s tragic loss. So that was Dickie Betts
One of the most breezy, tranquil tunes the Allman Brothers ever recorded. Great song, great choice! Another terrific Allman Brothers tune to check out is "Revival," one of their first major hits. Also, Gregg Allman, as a solo artist, recorded a very chill, mysterious version of "Midnight Rider," very different from the 'Brothers' song, and a showcase for Gregg's voice. Give it a listen when you get the chance.
Also, Dickey was one of the founding members of the band. He and Duane held the tryouts for the band and at the time Greg was in California and they convinced him to join the band because they needed a singer. I grew up with Dickeys son Duane. And there is also the Allman Betts which is Barry Oakley‘s son on base who was the original bass player, Greg Allman, son, Devon, Allman, Duane along with a few other members to fill out the band, but they are phenomenal as well
Melissa was such a popular name in the 70's. I know because I am one. Lol I know so many Melissa's around my age. I'm sure my mom was inspired by this beautiful song.
I absolutely love this song. It has such specific memories of a wonderful time in my life in addition to being a badass song on its own. Another thing I love is that the beginning sounds just like Watch Me by Labi Siffre- would love to see you do that one! When I hear the opening I’m always excited because either way I know it’s going to be a great song. Love you guys and your positivity and love of music ❤

the song Melisa was written by Greg over a year before the ABB was formed. took a while to get it ' right' and D. Betts was primary guitar , with Greg.
Next should be "Jessica". One member, (I think Betts but not sure), was watching his 2-3yo daughter playing in the yard. Tune was born. It's an instrumental, but if it doesn't make you tap your foot and smile, check your pulse.
That sweet guitar is Dickey Betts. We just lost him in April 2024. RIP. The powers that be had rejected this song outright until they heard Dickey Betts play that beautiful riff. Its my favorite Allman Bros. song.
Dickie Betts played guitar on this track. Duane died just a few weeks before it was recorded.
Yes 1971. Got to see Allmans perform a few times in '71 with Duane. Then suddenly he was gone.

Also, Dickey was one of the founding members of the band. He and Duane held the tryouts for the band and at the time Greg was in California and they convinced him to join the band because they needed a singer. I grew up with Dickeys son Duane. And there is also the Allman Betts which is Barry Oakley‘s son on base who was the original bass player, Greg Allman, son, Devon, Allman, Duane along with a few other members to fill out the band, but they are phenomenal as well
I haven’t watched this yet and I know I’ll love it. Melissa is my favorite songs of The Allman Bros band
Melissa was such a popular name in the 70's. I know because I am one. Lol I know so many Melissa's around my age. I'm sure my mom was inspired by this beautiful song.
Finally Melissa! ❤
this came out when I was a senior in high school, lots of memories
I absolutely love this song. It has such specific memories of a wonderful time in my life in addition to being a badass song on its own. Another thing I love is that the beginning sounds just like Watch Me by Labi Siffre- would love to see you do that one! When I hear the opening I’m always excited because either way I know it’s going to be a great song. Love you guys and your positivity and love of music ❤
I saw the Allman Bros in Vancouver Fall ‘94. Never will forget it.
all these hearflelt comments... beautiful! All I have is that this album, Eat a Peach, was the soundtrack to my college years. And this beautiful ballad was our tender moment... I never had a girl named Melissa, but I wish I had. Just so I could sing her this song. Keep going babies... sample all these Allmans gems.
Glad you finally caught up with this one. Sweet Melissa is my favorite Allman Brothers tune.
the song Melisa was written by Greg over a year before the ABB was formed. took a while to get it ' right' and D. Betts was primary guitar , with Greg.
The Gold Standard of Southern Rock
You need to do In Memory of Elizabeth Reed by the Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East 1971
Next should be "Jessica". One member, (I think Betts but not sure), was watching his 2-3yo daughter playing in the yard. Tune was born. It's an instrumental, but if it doesn't make you tap your foot and smile, check your pulse.
Yes, it was Dickie Betts.
That sweet guitar is Dickey Betts. We just lost him in April 2024. RIP. The powers that be had rejected this song outright until they heard Dickey Betts play that beautiful riff. Its my favorite Allman Bros. song.
