You're listening to the birth of Southern Rock, not that the Allman Brothers fit into any one category. Blues, country, rock and jazz were all incorporated into one of the very best jam bands of all time.

Well Said. In my humble opinion, the almost 24 minute, Live at Fillmore East 1971 version, that I believe you must be referring to, is there best. I also believe that is the Holy Grail, and or Pinnacle, of a progressive blues/rock jam. It just doesn't get any better, at least to my ears.

We absolutely wore out our copy of Live at Filmore East. Lots of blues, but also some southern rock verging on country courtesy of Dicky Betts. They were fantastic and one of my greatest regrets in life is I never got to see them live (although I did see Greg).
Greg and Duane Allman had such a great impact on rock music. Duane is the main guitar on Layla. His death was such a major blow. Unfortunately, both are gone now and we just lost Dicky.

Smiling! Raised on southern rock and the blues, I’ve enjoyed this music for over 50 years. You’ve opened a door of enlightenment. Keep walking through and enjoy. Suggestions: The entire Live at Fillmore East will have your hairs standing up from the first note to the last. You must not leave this world without experiencing it at least once; some others include It’s Not My Cross To Bear; Don’t Want You No More; BB King Medley; and the more commercial end of the band… Rambling Man, Midnight Rider, Melissa, Blue Sky and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. Read the story of Duane and Gregg Allman. Both self taught musicians. It’s unbelievable that Duane started playing guitar at 14 and died at 24. Only 10 years of experience and he is considered one of the greatest guitarists in history. He also played guitar for many artists you may already know and don’t realize. Try Aretha Franklin’s “The Weight”. I could go on and on…lol. Can you tell I’m a fan?

Brothers Greg Allman on vocals/keyboards and older brother, Duane Allman on guitar.
I understand that Greg was quite young when he wrote this classic. I mean young to .. I don't believe he was even 21 y/o. 20 perhaps. When I have to recall Greg's age .. I start to think about Robert Plant and wonder if I'm confusing them. NOPE! Plant was young, but not that young, when he penned the lyrics to the greatest classic rock 'n' roll song in music history .. #STAIRWAY to HEAVEN .. He was like 28.
Tragically, Duane Allman was killed in a fatal motorcycle crash on 29 October 1971, when he collided with a flatbed truck, that stopped suddenly, to allow a city bus to pass.
    Duane was only 24 y/o.
    RIP D. Allman

Was lucky enough to have seen them in concert in Saint Louis (Kiel Auditorium) in the early Seventies. Epic...

Anything by The Allman Brothers is great. One of my very favorites is 'Statesboro Blues'. Check it out if you haven't already.

The live version on the At Fillmore record is a must listen, mon ami. That might be the best live album of the analog era. Maybe ever.
I'm loving your reactions to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times 🤘

That "CCR - Louisiana-bluesy-rock-jam" sound you described is often time colloquially called "Swamp Rock"
    It's a Southern Rock-Blues fusion for sure.

I had the pleasure of seeing the ABB about 30 times between 1980-2011. They would often use an old school light show - psychedelic with images of mushrooms etc. When they played jazz the light show made sense to me. When they played the blues I laughed about it. Hence I decided they should have reworked the lyrics and remaned this song Trippin Post - a song about a bad trip that seems endless and poor Greg plays the victim.

The Allman Brothers invented Southern Rock, my favorite band of all time!! My dad got me hooked on them when I was young.
    FYI Duane is pronounced “Da-Wayne”.

The lead singer, Gregg Allman, is also the keyboard player. He is amazing at both.

The best song of one of rock's greatest bands. The Fillmore performance is my favorite. Statesboro Blues and One Way Out are also great. Duane was one of the world's best guitarists. He played the haunting slide guitar at the end of Layla. If you want to hear a great instrumental, try Jessica.
