You're listening to the birth of Southern Rock, not that the Allman Brothers fit into any one category. Blues, country, rock and jazz were all incorporated into one of the very best jam bands of all time.

Well Said. In my humble opinion, the almost 24 minute, Live at Fillmore East 1971 version, that I believe you must be referring to, is there best. I also believe that is the Holy Grail, and or Pinnacle, of a progressive blues/rock jam. It just doesn't get any better, at least to my ears.

Smiling! Raised on southern rock and the blues, I’ve enjoyed this music for over 50 years. You’ve opened a door of enlightenment. Keep walking through and enjoy. Suggestions: The entire Live at Fillmore East will have your hairs standing up from the first note to the last. You must not leave this world without experiencing it at least once; some others include It’s Not My Cross To Bear; Don’t Want You No More; BB King Medley; and the more commercial end of the band… Rambling Man, Midnight Rider, Melissa, Blue Sky and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. Read the story of Duane and Gregg Allman. Both self taught musicians. It’s unbelievable that Duane started playing guitar at 14 and died at 24. Only 10 years of experience and he is considered one of the greatest guitarists in history. He also played guitar for many artists you may already know and don’t realize. Try Aretha Franklin’s “The Weight”. I could go on and on…lol. Can you tell I’m a fan?

We absolutely wore out our copy of Live at Filmore East. Lots of blues, but also some southern rock verging on country courtesy of Dicky Betts. They were fantastic and one of my greatest regrets in life is I never got to see them live (although I did see Greg).
Greg and Duane Allman had such a great impact on rock music. Duane is the main guitar on Layla. His death was such a major blow. Unfortunately, both are gone now and we just lost Dicky.

    GREAT REACTION!
My first exposure to the Allman Brothers was in 1971 in my freshman year at college. I ran into a guy in the hall and asked me if I'd heard of the band, and I said no. He said, come into my dorm room.... Well, we got high using his homemade bamboo bong, and listened to their entire first album, and I was blown away by how the band just took me on a musical journey. No, that guy and I didn't have sex, though the band made love to me.
I am now 70, and it is so great that MMBxMOB is discovering bands that had pure talent. No auto-tune, awesome vocals, great lyrics, and incredible musicians. RIP Duane and Greg.

And his brother Duane is one of the greatest guitar players (best slide guitar player). The original band had a second top tier guitar player in Dickey Betts who recently passed. If you have not, I highly recommend you react to Black Hearted Woman (studio version) and One Way Out from their Fillmore East album. I think you will enjoy them.

The first time I ever heard the Allman Brothers was on a simulcast of a weekly television program called ‘In Concert’. Very early 70s. The simulcast was a big deal because the audio channels for television broadcasts at the time were mono. But FM radio stations were out there. So what they did was broadcast the concert on both the television and the radio at the same time. People would turn off the audio on their televisions and turn on their FM radio tuners and listen to the concert in stereo. It was great for the times. There weren’t any latency issues between the audio and the video because those were the days of truly real-time broadcasts (no IP packets to buffer, assemble and disassemble). We used to do the same thing with MLB games; if you didn’t like who was calling play by play on the television, you’d pick up your favorite broadcast team on the radio and turn of the audio on the TV. No sync issues back then.

Back in the 70’s, the best bands were played only a bit on AM radio, think pop music, 3 minute songs. FM radio played whole albums, at times and more progressive rock. Innovative music. Deep cuts. Allman Brothers is Southern Rock. Honestly, the 70’s were musically explosive.

Duane & Gregg certainly gave them the strong blues rock feel. Dickey, not so much, but he still had great soul. This one makes my list of top 100 songs of all time.

The opening riff is in 11/16 if anyone is interested.
Edit: after that it moves into 4/4 time, and then it does indeed morph into into 12 bar blues

I believe it's actually 11/12 broken up into a 4-4-3 pattern and then repeating.
