Nothing better than having grown up as a kid in the 70’s…. Everything you listened to was performed by the talented musicians…. Today’s music is sampled and auto tuned….
I'm 71 now but this song takes me back to when I was in my late teens and early twenties listening to it on an eight-track tape in my 1968 Chevrolet Camaro.
Melissa was the first song Gregg wrote, as a teenager. He had everything completed except the title. One day, while in a grocery store, he heard a woman shout to a little girl, "Melissa, come here." The rest is history.
'Melissa' was written by Greg Allman and it was one of his brother Duane's favorite songs. When Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident, the rest of the Allman Brothers Band decided to record it for the album they were working on as a tribute to Duane. Vocals are by Gregg and electric guitar is by Dickey Betts who just passed away recently.
When you start your Southern journey you have a place to stay in North Carolina. We can sit on the back porch, listen to Southern rock and sip liquid corn. (moonshine).🥰
You're correct there was so much fantastic music in the 70's; as someone who lived during this time I never imagined that music would not equal the quality we consistently had in then. I think today's musicians live in a time when flash, spectacle, dancing, etc. are needed to hide the lack of musical talent and this is now the norm and those with talent can't easily find an audience.
Thanks, guys. I am so fortunate and grateful to have been a young man during the 70's. My friends and I bonded over the great music on the radio at the time. We couldn't wait to buy the latest albums by our favorite artists. Then, we would listen to them from beginning to end, in deep attention and appreciation. It was a time full of diverse creativity and talent. So many memories.
Now that we lost both Allman bros, and Dickey Betts, it is the end of an era. Inventors of Southern Rock, the Allmans will always be in my upper tier of music.
The Allman Brothers brought Southern Rock to the streets of America. They're one of the best bands to come out of America. You never go wrong with any Allman Bros. song. Melissa was one of the Allman Brothers best. That whole album - "Eat a Peach" was one of their very best. If you wanna hear how good of musicians the band was, find a listen to "High Falls" - album version. It's prolly too long to react too but it is beyond words good. It's an incredible piece.
One of my top three bands of all time there’s so many great songs to choose from guys from soul shine to one way out to whipping post. Enjoy this band I know you’ll love them. Much love and blessings. 🥂
One of my FAVS by them: In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed (At Fillmore East, 1971) - OMG - SUCH A JAM!!! LOVE ABB....THANKS for LISTENING TO THIS ONE, YOU-TWO!!! :) You might oughta check out Whipping Post, too - I can't recall you listening to that one, yet - BANGER!! HUGS, YOU-TWO!!!
The Allman Brothers were one of the most talented bands, Dickey Betts and Duanne Allman on guitar, 2 drummers, and Gregg on vocals. They were Country, Blues, a little jazz, and always Southern Rock. "Whipping Post" live at Fillmore East is one of the best live songs then.
You two are the best! I love your honest, heartfelt reactions...I grew up during the later 60's and 70's and agree with you about the music of that time. It was the best! ❤️
Thank you for your wonderful, thoughtful reactions, y'all. Other songs are Midnight Rider, Ramblin Man, Jessica, No Way Out, Statesboro Blues, Blue Sky, Whipping Post (LIVE, 1970 Fillmore East). Enjoy! ☮🖤🤘
The Allman Brothers Band is in a class all by itself. It would take too long to explain the background of all the sorrow and joy that surrounds this incredible group. Considered the best live band ever. Their Live at the Fillmore East concert is legendary. Their music is a mixture of Country, Blues, Rock, Jazz...they incorporate everything in their music. Try "Whipping Post".
A wonderful song, but my second favorite on "Eat a Peach". "Blue Sky" has the same easy feel but with the best guitar duet ever recorded. imo. Thanks for sharing, especially the talking! ☮💙🎶
This band has a large catalog, and every song is incredible. This has always been one of my favorites, but the song"Whipping Post" is also incredible. My wife and I were married in the early 70s, and I would love to go back to that wonderful period.
Early evening summertime, air cooling after hot day, cruising with friends, Allman Brothers on the sound system. Life was hopeful. Great reaction to great selection.
My favorite Allman Brothers song by a mile. I like other Allman Brothers songs that had the dual guitars of Duane Allman and Dickie Betz - who were both master guitarists - but this song with Betz playing that soulful guitar is just the best.
Duanne Allman plays the glassy slide lines and Dickey Betts does all the individual picking notes in between. Greg Allman's voice is up there with Joe Cocker, Bob Seger, and Rod Stewart for raspy vocals.
You need to hit Jessica soon, an instrumental with fantastic guitar work from the late GREAT Dickey Betts. Also Soulshine, Statesboro Blues, Not my cross to bear & One way out - live from Fillmore East. I'll be patiently waiting. Nothin better than Southern rock, always makes me feel home❤
Great song from a great band. Allman Brothers Band was so so good, and could play in so many wonderful styles. I would recommend listening to most of Live at the Fillmore East, a classic live album from their peak, but there are many many great studio cuts from other albums. If you want someone maybe a little similar playing now, check out Tedeschi Trucks Band, who have some connections to the Allman Brothers Band. They also are great players, singers, and play authentic true to the heart music in many styles.
In the early 90s, my 11 year old stepdaughter Melissa heard this song whenever she felt bad about things in life that she didn't yet comprehend. Now, 30 plus years later, the dead mans gold still hidden, still shines softly. What a love song.
I worked for a custom Audio/Video company in the 1990’s. One day I got a work order for Greg Allman, to install a satellite dish. I arrived in the AM, and was greeted at the door by Greg’s medical assistant. Greg came in and we talked briefly about the install. He asked me if I wanted to smoke a joint. (Hell yeah, I said inside my head!) I politely declined and I went about my job. After I finished, I sat with Greg in the Living Room and went over remote control and the satellite. As we talked he opned up about being married to Cher (yes, THAT Cher.) He said his nickname for her was “Toots”. She HATED that nickname. I chuckle every time I think about that day. Magical for me, as Melissa was one of my favorite songs growing up. Love both of you! Peace.
The Allman Brothers are a national treasure and Melissa is one of my absolute favorites. The story goes Gregg Allman was hung up on naming this song for a long while until finally one time in a grocery store at 4am he heard a Spanish lady call to her daughter "Melissa" as she was running away, it was then he realized that was the name he was looking for. He said in an interview with Howard Stern he was so happy he wanted to go over and kiss that lady on the cheek.
You're just discovering the Allman Brothers? Amazing experiences are ahead! The 1970s were amazing. One Way Out (live at the Filmore East) Whipping Post (studio version is my favorite but there's also a great live Filmore East version as well) Jessica Many others will suggest their favorites as well...❤❤❤
We lived a block away from where Duane was buried. We would walk by his grave nearly every day. Many new flowers, whiskey bottles left by it nearly every time.
Welcome to the genre of Souther Rock, y'all!! Other faves from ABB: Whipping Post, Revival, Trouble No More, Dreams, One Way Out, Ain't Wastin' Time No More and the list goes on and on. Ther are many other groups in the genre, but ABB is one of the best, especially since I grew up in that era. I absolutely LOVE your appreciate for such musical beauties. And for you, Andre, please give a listen to Revival; the mix of rock, gospel and foot-stomping...you will enjoy that song! Love to you both from Florida!
OMG, Southern Rock-Jazz Fusion at its finest !!! Great reaction, as usual ... luv you both !!! However, for this band, you MUST try to do the live versions of their songs if you have the choice (this one has none that I know of and IS the definitive one AFAIK), as this is one of a very few bands where the live performances are where they shine ... MORE than on the studio albums. Now, there is an exception ... sort of ... their album Eat A Peach is a combination of studio songs and leftover songs from "At Fillmore East" that didn't fit on that album. Now, as far as other SONGS YOU MUST HEAR before you die ... I'd urge you to do One Way Out, Stormy Monday, Jessica, Ramblin' Man, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, (DEFINITELY) Whipping Post (live At Fillmore East is a "life experience"), Les Brers In A Minor, Blue Sky, Midnight Rider (though the solo Gregg Allman album version is the best one) and You Don't Love Me are the songs you MUST react to !!!
A dear friend of mine who has since passed named his daughter after this song. The Allman boys went to school in my mom's hometown of Lebanon Tennessee. More Allman Bros please!
I believe you two would love Kenny Rankin,he has the most beautiful, mellifluous voice you will ever hear… Try when sunny gets blue, groovin, and peaceful here just for starters……..you might also try Laura Nyro, seldom played powerful beautiful voice, and writer for many artists ,please play Luckie by her..her 13th confessions album is wonderful
A great song from a great band. I know two different people who named their daughter Melissa because of this song. Completely aside from that, dogs going around in circles before laying down for the night is something in their DNA from their ancestors, the wolves. Wolves did that to pat down the area of ground they would sleep on so there were no sticks or rocks sticking up when they layed down.
the story goes is Gregg had this song but didn’t have a girls name to name the song … he was in a supermarket shopping when a little girl was running through the aisles alone followed by a woman yelling “Melissa..Melissa “ .. and this masterpiece was created… there are thousands of girls named Melissa after this song …
So many great tracks from The Allman Brothers any of the live Fillmore tracks, they did make a bunch of Amazing music after Duane passed, they added Warren Hayes in addition to Dickey Betts. Soulshine would be an awesome song for you to react to.
To hear the music that introduced America to The Allman Brothers, you have to listen to one of the best live album ever, Live At The Fillmore East. Whipping Post was a monster hit, that introduced many of us to country rock.
Dogs do that round and round thing before they lie down from instincts bred from when they lived in grasslands and savannas, and they had to tread down the grass to make a nice place to lie down for themselves. Or so I've heard
Another great band with a southern blues rock sound is the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Check out Champagne Jam, So Into You, Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight. If you can sit still while they are playing someone should check you for a pulse.
Great rock band from the 70's that mixed blues, jazz & country music in their sound. They had lots of great songs such as "Whipping Post", "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed", "Statesboro Blues", "Whipping Post", "Blue Sky", "Ramblin' Man" etc. One of my favorites is their instrumental "Jessica" which was written by guitarist Dickey Betts & named after his daughter. Sadly he just passed away.
This band is the Southern Rock genre elite some say founders… ?Also, being a drummer should mention they had two drummers Jai Johanny Johanson and Butch Trucks… This is from I feel their best album Eat a Peach… Great reaction and review 👊🏻
AB's made some beautiful sweet music and then theirs songs such as Whipping Post, One Way Out that are hard hitting rock blues jams with Duane Allman prior to his death in 1971. And the easier listening songs such as Blue Sky and Jessica...
Great song, recorded soon after Duane Allman died so he’s not on this. Features Dickey Betts on guitar who recently passed. A great song, but maybe not the first I would have suggested. The studio version of Whipping post or One way out live from Eat a peach album are both great and featured both Duane and Dickey. ❤
Although Duane Allman and the live Fillmore album were monumental, eat a peach was a great album. Dickey Betts did a fine job and when they added Warren Hayes it even made it better. I feel that they would have responded really well to Soulshine.

But at first, Duane didn't like it, from what I've read.
This was my very first “favourite” band! My eldest daughter is called Mellisa, my youngest is Jessica - both named after Allman Brothers songs!
Peace
Best music came out in the 70’s
🇬🇧 Andrei..Dominika... You guys are just beautiful, you really are. You are officially in my top two reaction channels. 🔥👍💕🎼
Thank you so much 🤗 💚
Love this band so much, one of the great American bands ever.
Greatest band ever, enjoy .you have finally got to them.❤
Dammmn str8 brother 🎉
Greatest American band. Brilliant musicians
When you start your Southern journey you have a place to stay in North Carolina. We can sit on the back porch, listen to Southern rock and sip liquid corn. (moonshine).🥰
"The guitar is insane, there is a second vocal but made with the guitar..." YOU SAID IT PERFECTLY!
Another terrific contribution by the recently departed Dickey Betts. Brings back wonderful memories.

I recommend watching the live version of this.
Tha Allman Brothers song SOULSHINE is a real positive feel-good song. And so is sweet MELISSA.
I agree completely
FACTS!!!

100s of great songs. ❤ one of the greatest bands ever. Duane and Dicky ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This song should always be played on the first beautiful spring day.
I would go with Blue Sky.

@@beare55 Absolutely. Thanks.
By far my favorite Allman Brothers song.
Southern boys from Florida and their favorite place play was NYC!

Gregg’s song - and he asked Dickey Betts to toss in some guitar. Did he ever…

Dickie Betts on guitar JUST died weeks ago,
You should check out another great Allman Brothers song, "Blue Sky", written and sung by Dickey Betts.
