Great reaction! You pretty much nailed it. The lyrics to "Shout" (1984/US#1, UK#4) were inspired by Arthur Janov's concept of Primal Therapy, more popularly known as Primal Scream Therapy. It's also where they got the name for their band, Tears for Fears - which is really the core duo of Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. They bonded over their love of synthesizers and popular psychology. Their first album bore this out, with morose pop songs set to early Synthpop bloops and bleeps. It's quite good and has aged better than some of their later stuff, honestly. The Hurting (1983/US#73, UK#1) did poorly in the US but quite well overseas. It yielded a clutch of UK hits, including "Mad World" (1982/UK#3 - which was covered by Michael Andrews ft. Gary Jules and became a huge international hit in 2003). There was also "Change" (1983/US#73/UK#4) and "Pale Shelter" (1983/UK#5), all three Top5 hits on UK radio. There was also a minor, non-album single, "The Way You Are" (1983/UK#24) that the band has tried to distance themselves from, as the sound is a bit peppier than their usual fare and was done to please their record label. "Shout" was a preview of the second album Songs from the Big Chair (1985/US#1, UK#2), which finally broke them out in the US. It was a huge-selling and huge-sounding album. It really exemplifies the mid-80s in so many ways. Other gigantic hits from that one include "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (1985/US#1, UK#2) and "Head over Heels" (1985/US#3, UK#12). "Mothers Talk" was a minor hit (1986/US#27, UK#14) as was "I Believe" (1985/UK#23), but the whole album plays beautifully as a seamless suite. Their third album The Seeds of Love (1989/US#8, UK#1) was also hit big on both sides of the pond, with its title track "Sowing the Seeds of Love" (1989/US#2, UK#5) being their last worldwide smash. They had abandoned their early Synthpop "new wave" approach and their arena-ready Alternative Pop from their massive Songs from the Big Chair-era, and now they seemed intent on proving they could do whatever they pleased. The lead single was a clever Psychedelic pastiche of 1967 Beatles and then-modern politics, with lyrics that definitely sailed over my US 12-yr-old head, LOL. Follow-up single "Advice for the Yong at Heart" (1990/US#89, UK#36) saw a jazzier, "adult contemporary" Sophisti-Pop approach. "Woman in Chains" (1989/US#36, UK#26) introduced the world to the vocals of Oleta Adams, who later recorded the R&B standard "Get Here" - 1991/US#5, UK#4). After this album, Curt (the cute one) Smith left. Partner Roland Orzabal's in-home studio had all-but left him out of the recording process on Seeds of Love, so they split for the first time in a decade. Orzabal continued with the name and had some middling success and a couple more good singles, with "Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)" (1992/UK#17) and "Break It Down Again" (1993/US#25, UK#20). If nothing else, you should check out "Head over Heels", "Mad World", "Sowing the Seeds of Love", and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", though.
Yeah, The Hurting really made a huge impression on me way back then... my favourite songs were 'Pale Shelter' and 'Memories Fade'. Smith & Olarzabal were both huge Beatles fans, and John Lennon is known to have done some therapy sessions with Arthur Janov himself, around 1969/1970, and he talked about it in interviews. Lennon's song 'Mother' is another well-known Primal Scream song.
Tears For Fears' entire discography is amazing. Believe it or not, they just put out another NEW album in 2022 - The Tipping Point. Also fantastic - look for Rivers of Mercy (for a good cry), My Demons, The Tipping Point, and Break The Man.
If you liked this, you would definitely like; - Head Over Heels - Sowing the Seeds of Love - Mad World - Pale Shelter You can't go wrong with any of them 🙂👍
Everybody Wants To Rule The World, Head Over Heels, Mad World, Woman In Chains, Sowing The Seeds of Love, Badman's Song, Pale Shelter, Advice For The Young At Heart, Change, The Working Hour, Memories Fade, Break It Down Again, Mother's Talk, and Raoul and the Kings of Spain.
Everybody Wants To Rule The World is one of my favourite all time songs by anyone! Head Over Heels, Sowing The Seeds of Love are also brilliant tunes ❤️ Greetings from Scotland, United Kingdom 🏴 🇬🇧
I'm glad you've got to experience some Tears For Fears, they are one of my favourite UK pop acts from the 80s along with The Cure and Talk Talk, they were the soundtrack to my teenage years.
"Shouting can be really theraputic." Hahaha! Very nicely done! That is _exactly_ what the song is about! It's about shouting as loud as you can to confront all your fears and all the wrongs that is happening in your life so that they no longer control you.
This is really a perfect song. Depending on how you play it, it's only 3 chords. The vocal hook is AMAZING. The melody hook is AMAZING. And the breaks, plus his melodic lead at the end, are AMAZING. All I can add is "Head Over Heels" is a great followup, and If you like his dancing, (plus it's a great song) "Change" off their first album is great.
Love Tears for Fears. They were still performing in 2019. Hopefully they will do some shows soon. Covid stopped so many good concerts and festivals. Roland (vocal lead on this song) is a master songwriter. He also plays guitar. Curt (my main crush) sings lead on several songs and plays the bass. You should check out “Mad World. Roland has a special dance in the video. Mad World was made popular in the US by another artist, but I love the original, written by Roland. It’s not so depressing. Everybody Wants to Rule World Head over Heels Pale Shelter Break it down Again Sowing the Seeds of Love I love watching their 2015 performance at Bonnaroo (festival in Tennessee).
You're spot on about what this song is getting at! These guys based the song, and their band name, on a therapy method called 'Primal Scream' which they had tried.
I have actually seen theese 2 still active over recent years before covid, where they performed theyr 80s hits live, with a updated twist on it. One of them is quite the good guitar shredder,so they played it more rock inspired. I was surprised over how well and strong theyr voices still were,as they sort of "vanished" after the 80s. They have defintly maintained theyr talents over the years. Both me and my mom loved them while i was growing up.
I love this song so much. 💜💜💜 “Head Over Heels” “Mad World” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” “Change” “Sowing the Seeds of Love” “Mothers Talk” *Songs From the Big Chair* is a favorite album. Also. Curt Smith (the guy who sang “Mad World” originally) did an acoustic version of “Mad World” with his daughter last year in April. It’s really an amazing version, and I highly recommend giving it a listen. There will be tears. 💜 💜💜💜
They were one of my favorite bands as a teenager. I was heartbroken when they broke up in '91. They're back together again and have put out new material but I haven't heard it yet. Shout does come from a sort of therapy; they were both going through Primal Scream therapy, which greatly influenced their first album.
Tears For Fears was one of my favorites growing up. They really are a vibe. I know everyone will tell you to do “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and that’s a good one, but I think you would really enjoy “Head Over Heels” for the fun video as well. If you have time to do both, please do. They’re an awesome band. Edit: The song actually was written after someone was told to scream in therapy. Good catch!
This song is so rich ! Love it. I bought their first album in 1983 (the hurting) just because of the picture on the disk cover and it was a HUUUUGEEE surprise !!! You need absolutely to listen Mad World 💋💋💋
one of my favorite tv shows is called Romanzo Criminale, it is in Italian but it has subtitles. There is a great scene with this song as the backing track.
I was about 12 or 13 years old when this band was extremely popular. I'm 50 years now. These videos seem like yesterday to me. So proud to grow up an 80s child. Music was big back then. Fun times.
I was roughly that age as well. Tears for Fears were brilliant. The 70s had the strongest impression on me, because that decade had the greatest variety of music. Music became more specialized after that, when business became more involved. I don't think it was a good thing. My mother also played classical music. I liked almost everything.
Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair (1985). This entire album is amazing. It includes Shout. If you get a chance to listen to it, I think you would really like it. 🎶💜
This was actually a groove we used to roller-skate to in the 1990s! Strong Message in one of Tears for Fears BIGGEST hits!!! Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith's powerful and boisterous delivery really elevates the message!!! 😊👏🏾🎤🎶🎸🥁🎹💯🛼
This is one of my many favourite Tears For Fears song and you reacted to it on my birthday! Yay love your reaction and you'd love their songs Mad World and Everybody wants to rule the world....among many others :) Oh and one no one else has mentioned after reading the comments is Woman in Chains, the message is ahead of their time and the black woman they have as backing vocalist is absolutely amazing.
In 1985 we did not have cable therefore no MTV etc... but we did have a show Friday Night Videos. I was in labor with my 3rd of 5 sons and "Everyone Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears came on the show, The first line in the song is "Welcome to your life" which I thought was really cool. Then, it turned out that he was the kind to want to rule the world. Unfortunately he passed away at age 32 but that song (along with so many other because we had the same taste in music), always made me think of him.
Jayy, I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but your comment at the end of the video is SPOT ON! What you are talking about is something known in Psychiatric circles as "Primal Scream Therapy". I believe it's based on Carl Jung's work, but I may be wrong about that. But, the members of Tears For Fears, Curt and Roland, were big devotees of that school of though and they based at least a few of their songs on that idea. So you were exactly right! Look up info on Tears For Fears and you will see reference to this as one of the driving motivations in starting the band and writing of certain songs.
When I was in middle school (around 1988-1989), our music class got new textbooks and Tears for Fears were actually featured in them, which felt weird at the time and feels even weirder now, more than 30 years later. Great music though.
You mention that shouting can be therapeutic. Tears For Fears were early believers in primal scream therapy, which John Lennon utilized back in the 1970s. Tears for Fears read the therapist Arthur Janov's book and actually began their music career so they could afford to get therapy for their messed-up childhoods (both came from troubled homes). The band name, 'Tears for Fears', is based upon a chapter of the primal scream therapy book, "tears as the replacement for fears." All that said, these two guys are great musicians in their own right. They broke up for about 10 years back in the 1990s, but reunited in 2000 and still tour. They apparently finished a new album (their first album in 18 years) late last year. As for reactions, I suggest their songs 'Head Over Heels' and 'Sowing the Seeds of Love'.
Jayy, I just found some lyrics to a song by Roland and Tears For Fears, written after he and Curt parted ways in the early 90's, where he sings about that. The song is called "Fish Out of Water" and Roland wrote it out of some sense of bitterness with the way he and Curt parted company. Here are the lyrics: "Fish out of water We used to sit and talk about primal scream To exorcise our past was our adolescent dream But now it's sink or swim since your memory fails Now in Neptune's kitchen you will be food for killer whales"
Sowing the seeds of love tears for fears U2 song Bad at live aid concert, Bono saves a girl from the crowd New radical you get what you give . Great songs and great videos. You will enjoy.
There are quite a few people who didn't like the music of the 80's. But then, some people don't like chocolate. I know one person who doesn't like cheese! No accounting for tastes but I'm glad I got to live through this era.
I only keep about 5 CD’s in my car and it’s always the same bands, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles White Album, The Rolling Stones Beggars Banquet, The Cars Candy’o and let’s not forget… Tears for Fears Songs From the Big Chair. I remember hearing them for the first time thinking I need to buy that album! They were still making albums in the 80’s.. lol. But when I hear it in it’s entirety, I realized what a awesome band this was. I never grow tired of it.
Baby girl! back in the day, kids had to learn to play an instrument ...or wish they did! That's why you see some of these very young artist, playing instruments, and having these huge hits! It's because a lot of them have been at it from very young! and a lot of the parents encouraged practicing "down in the basement" or "in the garage"! God Bless!
If you want to dive down the rabbit hole a bit with 80s "New Wave", I'd suggest checking out the bands, Mister MIster (especially the song Broken Wings), Dead or Alive and "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), and Oingo Boingo with "Weird Science" and "Dead Man's Party". Those are great intros into the genre!

Head over heals is another great song by this band no doubt about it!!!
“Sowing the Seeds of Love” “MadWorld” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”
Yes, Sowing the Seeds! Vocals are best showcased here, and the video was ahead of its time.
Pale Shelter, The Hurting, Change, and Madworld 🤔
IMO, this is one of the most under rated bands. Tears for Fears should have been WAY more popular considering how incredible the music is.
80’s gold.A great English band with talent galore...and the definition of cool.
Tears For Fears' entire discography is amazing. Believe it or not, they just put out another NEW album in 2022 - The Tipping Point. Also fantastic - look for Rivers of Mercy (for a good cry), My Demons, The Tipping Point, and Break The Man.

Jayy, the 80's had some of the best music ever written, I've been into every type of music for 60+ years and the 80's are my favorite genre.
Fun Fact:
The people who were gathered for the performance scenes were the families of the bandmembers

This is an awsome song, haven't we all felt like this at some point in our lives, I know that I sure have and more than once my friends!!!

Love this song!!!!!! "Head Over Heels'' is a favorite of mine as well!!
There are quite a few people who didn't like the music of the 80's. But then, some people don't like chocolate. I know one person who doesn't like cheese! No accounting for tastes but I'm glad I got to live through this era.
Hello Bonjour JAYY, thank you so much for your tears for fear reaction, it was one of my best band when i was more young. Tony from France
Songs of the big chair (1985) is the best album of Tears for Fears
Beautiful reaction by a young beautiful lady , keep it going sweetheart from your British fans
Baby girl! back in the day, kids had to learn to play an instrument ...or wish they did! That's why you see some of these very young artist, playing instruments, and having these huge hits! It's because a lot of them have been at it from very young! and a lot of the parents encouraged practicing "down in the basement" or "in the garage"! God Bless!
You always put a smile on my face.👍
Mothers talk
Head over heels
Sowing the seeds of love
Love the way you go all over the place... Peace!!!
The end of video always reminds me of The Beatles, Hey Jude, with everyone crowding around the band.
Listen to “Head over heels”!!!!
Living in the 80s was truly amazing and the music like this was so meaningful. Great reaction as always.
"Woman in chains" and "Elemental" amazing! 😍😘💕💕
From the Album, Songs From The Big Chair!😁
Aaaawww... I love Tears for Fears
My fav of theirs- Then “Head over Heels.” 💖👍✌️
I have always love this song. Early 20s. Summertime HOT jam by the pool. Dig it?
Broken/Head over Heels
These two songs are meant to be played consecutively
Roland & Curt were literally going through Shout Therapy. You are correct about it
If you want to dive down the rabbit hole a bit with 80s "New Wave", I'd suggest checking out the bands, Mister MIster (especially the song Broken Wings), Dead or Alive and "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), and Oingo Boingo with "Weird Science" and "Dead Man's Party". Those are great intros into the genre!
Jayy, I just love you young lady! You are a very special person. I hope you know that! 😘❤️💜☮️
“They are a whole vibe”?... wait till you hear Sowing The Seeds Of Love!
