"Mad world" and "Sowing the seeds of love" are Awesome songs to check out!!! Roland is such an incredible guitarist. Tears For Fears are so underrated and they're Timeless!!
When Shout was released - it was profound. Nothing else like it back then. It was played mainly on alternative & college radio stations, "discovered" late by the mainstream. Most of my peers back then were listening to heavy metal, glam rock, Top 40 and disco (yikes). For me - it was TFF, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, U2, The Smiths, OMD, The Cure, The Stranglers - just a few of the bands that kept us going - musically and emotionally. Still does.
The video was filmed at a place called Durdle Door which is in Dorset, a county on the south coast of England. It's an amazing bit of coastline around there.
Is that close to where “Broadchurch” was filmed? I seem to recall reading the filming location for that series was in Dorset. There were stunning cliffs in that series.
These guys don't have a so-so album. They evolved over time but always remained creative and interesting. Their later album "Raoul And The Kings Of Spain" is a work of art. The melodies, the instrumentation, the production are all gorgeous. Every song is a gem.
I was 25 years old when this song was so huge. It was absolutely exhilarating! The whole album! They really "ruled the world" then and their songs haven't gotten old in any way since then!
This place is Durdle Door in Dorset, England. A part of Lulworth Cove and a beautiful part of Southern England. I used to live about twenty minutes from here.
Roland Orzabal is a very underrated guitar player. Here's a deep cut for you. It's 'The Working Hour' from the 'Big Chair' album and they say it's their most-requested fan favorite when they tour. This particular live performance is from 2014. It's the song that first got me interested in exploring their music beyond the hits. They still tour today, and have a new album complete (no release date announced yet): ua-cam.com/video/s5_HZT7qhP0/v-deo.html
The story behind this song is great. In the 80’s the world, especially England where Tears for Fears was starting out, was afraid Ronald Reagan was going to start a nuclear war. The singer Roland O. was humming the main verse in his head in the shower. He took this to Kurt Smith, but they did not want to finish it out,but were talked into it….luckily.
You’ll find it was everybody wants to rule the world they didn’t care for much. Shout was Roland’s love if Roland had his way at the time Everybody wants to rule the world would never been released except Chris Hughes pushed it.
I got to see these guys (with Hall & Oates) and they made me feel 14 years old again like I was when this album came out. Loved these guys! Nice review 🙂
As I listened to this song in 1985, being a kid in that year, I really loved it a lot until today. It is one of my favorite song of the legendary 80s. Good review of Shout, guys.
Great review! From the song's wiki page - It features footage of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith at Durdle Door in Dorset, England, as well as at a studio performance with the full band (including Ian Stanley and Manny Elias) performing the song amidst a crowd of family and friends. The video reportedly cost only £14,000 to produce.
They are still performing, and came out with an new album named "The Tipping Point" in 2021. The title song from the album is quite good. Also the song "My Demons".
6:31 (album version) 6:00 (video version) 4:52 (single version) 3:59 (U.S. single version) In the US, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on 3 August 1985 and remained there for three weeks
This was filmed on the south coast of England, I believe it's derdole Dore near Lulworth cove Dorset. Went there a lot in the 80s. I live in Hampshire not that far from there. Small world ❤ happy days 🎉❤
Came across this vid I’m glad I did I was born in 91 this track always be on one of those late night infomercials and this track will be on and honestly has been ear worm to this day. Love the synth and bass and the level production of that time freakin amazing.
I love watching young people discover TFF. The "layering" and songwriting is vastly underrated. For amazing layering, check out "Woman in Chains" with the incomparable Oleta Adams. I'll bet you can handle it... 😉 Carry on boys, they have so much more! 👏
When you said he look like one of the singers I was cracking up because that’s was the first thought that popped in my head before you said anything! Hahaha
Love this video! Have heard the song a hundred times or more, but never saw the video. It was like Tears for Fears sprung up out of nowhere one day and then it was like they should have been there all the time. Instantly likeable and you could listen to them over and over and not get tired of hearing their songs. Their sound was unique and distinctively them.
U take me back to my Teen years in the 80's. This was one of my favorite bands and songs in the 80's... I also like: Genesis, Madonna, Elton John, Michael Jackson etc.
Great review, other essential TFF songs are Sowing The Seeds Of Love, Woman In Chains, Badman's Song (they take you to church on that one) Mad World, Head Over Heels, Secret World, Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, Call Me Mellow, Change, Break It Down Again, The Working Hour, I Love You But I'm Lost, the list is endless.
The ocean scene with the big rock was shot at Durdle Door In Dorset England. My nearest beach. Amazing scenery round there and towards the end of the vid are all the bands family and friends.
“Head Over Heels” off the same album (Songs From The Big Chair) should definitely be your next Tears For Fears reaction video and if you can also react with the official video without getting blocked that would be even better. My personal favorite track from the epic “Songs From The Big Chair” album
Great review y'all. Tears for Fears are one of my very favorite bands, they are incredible. Their production and engineering rivals Steely Dan, and that's the ultimate compliment. A must hear cut is the stunning Woman in Chains. It's spectacular. Their album Elemental has the great title cut, Elemental, as well as Break it Down Again, Mr. Pessimist, and my favorite, Goodnight Song. Raoul and the Kings of Spain album, as noted below, is breathtaking. The title cut is a must hear as well as Secrets and God's Mistake. And of course, Sowing the Seeds of Love is their tribute to The Beatles and is as much of a must-see video as a must hear delight. More please!
I have heard this song for years..and apparently never heard the entire recording. Just WOW!. I love it more now than ever. Also enjoyed the part of the video where the kids joined in.
I agree, the Songs From The Big Chair era would be the higher heights of TFF. Shout was a unique and different sounding song when it was released, mainly with the synth sound. Roland Orzabal's guitar playing in the song, especially his solo is absolutely one of the most anthemic and awesome solo's ever. The bass line during the bridge as well so distinct and yet simple. Another fantastic song from this album is Head Over Heels. Other songs to check out would be from their debut album, The Hurting: Change, Pale Shelter and Mad World.
Songs From The Big Chair is a great album, but they followed it with an even better album called The Seeds Of Love, check out the songs Sowing The Seeds Of Love, Woman In Chains and Advice For The Young At Heart all from the Seeds album, or jump right up to the present time and check out tracks from their new album The Tipping Point, the title track is great, but so are Rivers Of Mercy, End Of Night, My Demons, and my personal favourite, Long Long Long Time.
Video filmed in Durdle Door in the country of Dorset, south west England. A very famous arch feature on the beach has been the subject of countless movies and music videos as well as poets, writers and artists.
My comment disappeared. 😕 Maybe because I posted a link to a fairly live version of "The Working Hour"? You should check out "The Working Hour" from this album. It's a fan favorite and has a fantastic sax intro. I've been in love with this band since they came out and the layering has a lot to do with it. I agree that it should be listened to with headphones.
Thoroughly fantastic album. In sequence. Also loved The Seeds of Love, etc....one of my fave songs by them is Famous Last Words. If you haven't listened to it, or Woman in Chains, DO.
It is filmed in Durdle Door is one of Dorset's most photographed and iconic landmarks. It is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, England. I dated a bloke who is Roland Orzabal's doppelganger, when this album was in the charts.
As for a Tears for Fears "deep cut" perhaps you can do "Brian Wilson Said" off the album Elemental. Curt Smith was not on this album; it was just Roland and his back up band then (with production and songwriting collaboration by Alan Griffith). The album is under-rated, but it has some sublime songs. "Brian Wilson Said" is glorious, glorious!!!! Roland's best guitar work. Beautiful song.
I think you should do an Australian music week. Since you like sax and the 80s, you might start with Outta Mind Outta Sight by The Models or anything by INXS. Since you have decades of music from a whole other country to catch up on, will let other commenters make suggestions.
Do a song or two from "The Hurting", their first album, like "Pale Shelter". Also check out "Working Hour" from "Songs from the Big Chair", it's the most fan requested song on tours.
You might know Tears for Fears' song "Mad World" from their first album "The Hurting." It is hauntingly beautiful. ... If you like Tears for Fears, you might also like the Scottish band Simple Minds from the 1980s, who had a No. 1 hit with "Don't You Forget About Me" (from the teen comedy-drama film "The Breakfast Club") and a No. 3 hit "Alive and Kicking," also shot at a cool outdoors location, with a cliff and waterfall. ... I was in high school and college back then and couldn't get enough of the Second British Invasion new wave and synth rock bands of the 1980s! :-)
The deep cuts of "Songs from the big chair," are also excellent and you can tell the connections between Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, The Cure and others in their work.
If you really want to see an identical twin of the guy on the right (sorry, don't know your names yet), then you should check out: "The Beloved - Sweet Harmony" ... Your dude is the spitting image of that singer.
I miss how anthemic many songs in the 80s were... and just amazing songwriting! This was an era long gone. (If you haven't listened, try "Woman In Chains" with Oleta Adams - Roland's vocals plus Oleta's range just hits, and of course the meaning of the song itself. :)
So with my beloved Talk Talk and Tears for Fears looked at, 80s Brit band still going (sort of) that you must look into is PREFAB SPROUT - songwriter /vocalist Paddy McAloon is heralded by the greats as a 'genius' 'Appetite" a starting point or 'Billy'
Nobody is talking about the drummer. he is fucking amazing!!!
I miss the awesomeness of the 80’s and MTV. Back in the day it was 24 hours of music videos and every great song had a great video to watch.
Concur. MTV is total commercial crap now. That’s why I love UA-cam channels like this!
Total banger this song. The guitar playing, the multi layered arrangement, the singing, the production - the track has it all.
"Mad world" and "Sowing the seeds of love" are Awesome songs to check out!!! Roland is such an incredible guitarist. Tears For Fears are so underrated and they're Timeless!!
I totally agree on both songs.
Pale shelter is underrated
Woman in Chains.
problem is/was that there sound was so similar to depeche mode
@@savage_skirt5386 Both incredible in their own right who smashed the 80's!! Go GB 😎😎
Songs from the Big Chair is a masterpiece!

The video was filmed at a place called Durdle Door which is in Dorset, a county on the south coast of England. It's an amazing bit of coastline around there.
We have an amazing coastline around our entire island.
I'm in Cornwall and the north coast is legendary (literally) for a reason.
Is that close to where “Broadchurch” was filmed? I seem to recall reading the filming location for that series was in Dorset. There were stunning cliffs in that series.

Well said, I absolutely love Raoul, it's magnificent!
Os falsetos de Roland Orzabal nessa música são insanos....

56 years old... Welcome to the 80's gentlemen...
glad you loved it as much as I did.
Such an underrated band. Their layers and changes are the best. I saw them in 2022 and live they are fantastic!
HEAD OVER HEELS was then another hit song by them🙂💥
Roland Orzabal is a very underrated guitar player. Here's a deep cut for you. It's 'The Working Hour' from the 'Big Chair' album and they say it's their most-requested fan favorite when they tour. The Working Hour is one of the very best. That song is such a journey.
Outstanding song!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Tears for fears Rock and roll Hall of Fame
The sounds you mentioned came from a Fairlight CMI synthesizer. Very expensive hardware those days.
