      This is my head canon to make things even a little more believable:
      Hyperspace travel has existed for many thousand years. Most species after joining the galactic community, would simply copy the ancient hyperspace technology (the core parts of hardware and software that were so matured that there hadn't been improvements since forever). This core elements had specific commands hardwired in to prevent things like the Holdo maneuver. Either because they were used in ancient and forgotten wars and outlawed or because some disgruntled smuggler might be able to obliterate entire worlds.
      Now the flagship of the resistance was a prototype constructed by the Republic with the goal to create their own hyperspace engine. Maybe to improve usage in dangerous regions (Galactic core or even leaving the galaxy) where it was found that conventional hyperspace engines wouldn't work reliably if it worked at all.
      The experiment was a failure and the Raddus had been too finetuned for the new hyperspace engines to simply swap it with common engines (knowing that each Mon Calamari cruiser was a unicum and the engineers surely had tried to optimize it to the extreme). So she kept the new engines (that worked less reliably than common engines, needed more maintenance, etc.) that were deemed too dangerous as while they had fiddled with the ancient core programming, nobody could guarantee the safety of ship and crew.
      Instead of scraping, the Raddus found its way to the resistance and as long as the engines were kept within very specific parameters, the safety _should_ be _nearly_ guaranteed. Holdo knowing about this not only deactivated these safeties but configured the engines to such expremes that she knew the ship would not survive the jump. She would not had known what exactly would happen, but hoped that it would be at least a giant detonation that would hopefully mask the escape of the rest of the resistance.

    • @theendersmirk5851
      @theendersmirk5851 8 місяців тому +85

      Yeah, the ram is exclusively dumb in the "why hasn't this been done before?" context, whereas other stuff, such as Rey being used as an audience surrogate because Rian Johnson thought he was clever, functionally character assassinating any of her good qualities from the first movie in the process (because there were one or two until Johnson retconned her desire to find her family into her being a clout chaser for that scene) while Finn... everyone knows how bad Finn got treated in the movies following Force Awakens. Heck, outside of Han getting demoted back to smuggling, most of the characters were treated alright during Force Awakens, new ones included. Kylo was a bit whiny and Rey was abnormally skilled, but the former would've worked if Snoke was allowed to be important, and the latter is just a side effect of force sensitivity, so if you assumed the title meant Force Sensitivity was getting way higher quality during that era (like I did until Last Jedi came out) there's no inconsistency, she's just one of a new wave of force sensitives who are all strong. Then Last Jedi made it out like that wasn't the case, and Rise of Skywalker made it more obviously not.

    • @brendanpierce96
      @brendanpierce96 8 місяців тому +24

      @deoxxys That's fair. Lightspeed ram at least gets the "rule of cool" factor in my opinion. In a vacuum, I actually think that the lightspeed ram is a cool moment, I just don't like how it fits into the lore. However, Force Healing makes fatal wounds otherwise survivable and ruins the stakes of any fight after it is introduced, so there isn't anything redeemable about its inclusion in my opinion. That's kind of why I don't really mind the lightspeed ram as much as other factors of TLJ (Luke's Characterization, sub-plots that don't service the overall story, characters that go through largely the same arc as the prior movie/don't grow at all, bad pacing imo, etc.) I was actually a fan of the decision to make Rey a nobody and not related to any established character, and I liked that Kylo seemed to step into a more villainous role (the inverse of Anakin's arc) because they were showing us things we hadn't already seen in this universe. But yeah, Force Healing is really bad and Lightspeed Ram doesn't make a ton of lore sense, but I don't think it's nearly the worst thing about the film

    In the old lore, there are exactly 3 ways this could have gone:
    1, Holdo engaged the hyperdrive, and successfully ran away after getting the vast majority of the remaining Resistance killed.
    2, Holdo tried to engage the hyperdrive to run away, but the First Order's new flagship came equipped with a gravity well generator or two, preventing any escape.
    3, Holdo tried a ramming manuever with the sub-lightspeed engines (it wasn't effective at all, minimal disruption to enemy shields and no damage to any other starships)
    There are ways for command bridges to be damaged directly or shields to be bypassed, but the former usually only becomes possible after a heavy firefight where one side can overload the enemies' shields, while the latter is mostly achieved by secretly ambushing an enemy fleet and infiltrating while they're not expecting any attacks. As for directly ramming other starships, the general rule of thumb is that if you can close the distance, ramming can be effective among ships of similar sizes, but if the enemy shields have been overloaded, even smaller ships can disable/destroy sections of large battleships.
    No matter what the interpretation, Admiral Holdo can only be viewed as an incompetent coward who got her entire fleet destroyed, all because of some nonsense about a "fuel shortage".

      (Lucas era book lore) hyperdrives work by tearing a hole in real space for a split second and kicking the ship through it at or near light speed to access hyperspace, where physics are a bit more lax enabling practical travel times over intersteller distances. Objects in real space cast mass shadows in hyperspace which become more dangerous the larger they are, potentially being as hard as the object itself (which would be unaffected in real space). As such most hyperdrives have a safety built into them that dumps them back into real space if one is detected (kind of like collision avoidance applying the brakes on a modern car) but they are sometimes damaged or removed by outlaws as interdictors trick that particular system by projecting an artificial gravity well that makes it believe there is a planet in the way.
      So the "Holdo manuver" is theoretically possible, if you manage to get the right course and time it so the target is between the start of the jump and the hyperspace entrance, and disable the safety so it doesnt avoid the giant metal planet in front of you.
      And as this video so aptly points out, shields (Ray and Particle) are still a thing, and 1 ships suicide is a far cry from being pounded on by an entire asteroid field for hours/days because Vader said to.

      @@ronaldthompson4989 I wondered that, if Hyperspace is like a dimension outside of normal space, how would a star or supernova affect those in hyperspace. I like the idea that massive objects (stars, planets, black holes, ect) might also affect hyperspace around them.

    • @VividBoricua
      @VividBoricua 2 роки тому +140

      @@ronaldthompson4989 That really depends on the velocity of the objects in question. One ship traveling at 0.9 times the speed of light has 7.29E16J/kg of energy. For reference, that's 10,000 times larger than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima (15kTons TNT or 63E12J)... per kg. Take all this energy and put it into 1E-12 of a second, and you have WAY WAY more power than asteroids being flung at you over days.
      An asteroid traveling at 100km/s (or not even 0.0004 times the speed of light) (also, average impact speed for asteroids is only 18km/s) only has 1.44E10J/kg, or 100 times *smaller* than the Hiroshima bomb. Even a megaton bomb, at 4E15J, would be more energy than many asteroid impacts. And the power requirements are obviously much smaller due to the much much larger time scale of the impact (as the relative speed of each object would necessitate that a "slow" asteroid would take longer to impact than a near lightspeed ship).
      So yeah, I can believe that the hyperspace ramming ship would do more damage than asteroid impacts. The problem with the hyperspace ramming scene isn't the resulting damage. The energies and power involved are gigantic. The problem is that it works at all because of what it says about the rest of the universe. No way someone doesn't just make a near lightspeed kinetic torpedo. And how could you miss the Deathstar? You can't miss the Deathstar, it's basically a moon. Was it too big for it to be taken out due to its own gravity field? Then what about the Executor class star destroyers? Those things are similar size to the First Order ship. No one even tried to assassinate Vader while he was on board by doing a hyperspace kamikaze run? Come on.

      @@richardbrooksshnee The physics of hyperspace travel are secondary. What's more important is how stupidly contrived this is. Multiple times during that movie, the heroes are placed in no-win scenarios, then the villains act like complete morons for no justifiable reason, just so they can be defeated:
      - During the rbel escape from planet whatever, Hux keeps his three destroyers as far away from the rebel fleet as possible, then sends his absurdly massive ship way too close with no escort, the ship destroys the already-empty base on the surface instead of shooting at the rebel fleet and when the rebels attack, Hux keeps his still-intact destroyers away from his poorly defended SSD, watching it get destroyed by these stupidly frail, slow and massive bombers, all of them getting destroyed almost as soon as they arrive, except one that reaches its target.
      - Then we get Po's desperate plans to either stage a mutiny and take over the fleet, or infiltrate Snoke's ludicrously massive ship and sabotage it, all because Admiral purple hair and Leia had to act like morons and not tell their plan for escape to the one guy they knew was to anxious to just sit back and do nothing, but also too loyal to betray them and warn the First Order.
      - THEN we get this stupid moment when, after everything fails, Admiral purple hair does her sacrifice, and it has to work because at that point in the story the heroes have no other options.
      - AND THEN, because apparently all that, plus a fuckton of other stuff I'm leaving out (¿¿¿who's stupid enough to leave their fate on some con man they were told should not be trusted because he's only interested in money and has no allegiances???), we get YET ANOTHER repeat of all previous scenes, with the First Order bringing yet another super weapon, this time a super laser that has to be towed like a giant rock, just so Finn can repeat Admiral purple hair's sacrifice, EXCEPT NO, SURPRISE! EXPECTATIONS SUBVERTED! Finn's romantic interest sacrifices herself to stop him and deliver some stupid last words as she dies and we see the First Order blast the rebel stronghold with their super laser, killing everyone inside and capturing & executing Finn, who was right there, just a few feet apart from the First Order's troops.
      - EXCEPT NO, FUCK YOU, EXPECTATIONS SUBVERTED AGAIN, MOTHERFUCKER! Turns out some crystal cave foxes or whatever lead the last remaining rebels out of their besieged fortress through some back door and everyone who was shot down trying to take the super laser, including Finn, who was left without a ship, somehow escapes.
      I don't give a fuck if Rei is The Soecial, the granddaughter of Palpatine or some force-sentient hobo, all that's secondary. What kills me is how stupid the story itself is, how every 20 minutes we get impossible challenges resolved in absurdly contrived ways that always require someone or someones to act like absolute morons.
      Seriously, ask yourself this: If they could just take out that massive super-mega star destroyer by ramming it with one of their ships, then why didn't they program the ships they were discarding to ram it? We see multiple rebel ships being destroyed during that pursuit.

    • @Colp2
      @Colp2 4 місяці тому +1

      The dumbest thing is that they didn't even *need* to introduce hyperspace skipping to fix anything, since It's only because of TROS itself that the tracker is a narrative problem.
      TLJ only shows the Supremacy as capable of using it, and out-of-movie materials tell us that you need a *huge* databank suspended in a localized hyperspace field (to speed up the calculations) for it to work.
      TROS then introduced TIE-fighters that are able to use the tracker, for some unexplained reason, and hyperspace skipping to explain why the tracker no longer is an issue... and then neither the tracker nor the skipping had *any* relevance to the rest of the story.
      --------------------------------------------------
      Same with the Holdo manuever; the TLJ novelization *did* give us an explanation for why only The Raddus could be used to do this; saying it had experimental shields which allowed it to basically turn into a giant blaster bolt as it was vaporized against the Supremacy.
      It's not a good explanation, and it kinda contradicts the fact that Hux and others clearly knew what was going to happen, but at least it is one. Whatever. Small retcon.
      Then TROS comes with the "oh, it was a one-in-a-million shot!" bullshit, which makes even *less* sense... and then it *fucking happens again* at the end of TROS.

      @@gurrigetaube6995 I actually have no idea what you are talking about if you think hyperspace ramming had ever previously occurred.
      According to a wiki on ramming, there once was an incident when an imperial fleet came out of hyperspace and accidentally rammed into the Executor (Star Wars: Race for Survival), but that was all just accidental ramming in realspace, not hyperspace (just like that frigate that got destroyed by the Devastator coming out of hyperspace in Rogue One).
      The Holdo Maneuver should never have worked, made for shock and awe that makes zero logical sense. As Finn said in Episode IX, that was a "One in a million shot."
      You are confusing things because if hyperspace ramming was 'normally' possible, it would be a good and used tactic.

      There was a Hyperspace ram in a old Star Wars comic where the empire prepared for an attack on Yavin because the Executor had just been constructed. Admiral Griff was in control of an imperial fleet that had been blockading the planet for a long time. I'm not really sure what happened but I think Griff wanted to be the one to destroy the Alliance and attacked before Vader arrived with the Executor and chased the Alliance, the Executor had arrived before they had expected it to and they rammed right into it with what I think was 3 Star Destroyers.
      (This is just what I remember and I've also made assumptions based on them, so I could be wrong about some things.)

      @@andyjacobs7010 If you're a rebellion with limited resources, sacrificing one of your 5 ships to blow up 1 ship in a massive fleet of ships without even targeting the command deck is a terrible strategy. Holdo was just a terrible tactician. Because of her poor strategy, the *entire Resistance* was reduced to cramming into the Millennium Falcon. (though to be clear, Po's no tactical genius either, as he lost them all of their horrible Star Fortress bombers they had in place of Y-Wings.
      They knew Snoke's ship was tracking them through hyperspace, and not the rest of the FO fleet. The better strategy would have been to split up the fleet and regroup later. Instead the entire fleet ran away in the same direction.
      It would have been much more thematically poignant if the FO was able to track Leia specifically through her connection to Kylo Ren rather than some special tracking technology, culminating in Leia sacrificing or at least surrendering herself so the Resistance could escape. It would have fit well into the film's theme of "letting the past die so the future can live".

      This is one of the points that makes this scene so beautifully schizophrenic. Not only does it break the entire star wars universe (a droid in a X wing would have taken care of the death star), but it also contradicts the movie where 100 bombers were needed to do what one could have done according to this scene. That it contradicts itself in a narrative sense too is just grand and really drives home that this movie was a 'first draft' written by a committee that was more concerned with getting in their quota of toxic female archetypes than of cultivating the story or the universe.
